    If designed more for mountain climbing, I'd see this as a real tool!
    --Back hook for rope related tasks
    --Thicken the blade itself to be able to dig into rocks
    --Keep the point for stabbing into crevices
    Hell! Add a retraction mechanic to flip it 180* backwards and you have a free hand!

    Fatal flaw, your fingers/knuckles are exposed, id consider a bar that goes over the knuckles and connects the handle to the weapon in a quarter circle, it would be a great addition to the design.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +128

      I actually had a knuckle guard in the original design but it was already difficult enough to make, and I didn't want to complicate it even further.

    • @jonathanlovelace521
      @jonathanlovelace521 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but doesn't seem like too fatal of a flaw. The blade itself will normally be between the opponent's weapon and the hand, and it's presumably a weapon you'd use alongside a shield.

    I dig this weapon, as a concept, and see possibilities in it, for adapting it into new fantasy weapons. But while in the shower, something struck me, for redesigning it, though I'm willing to bet it'd clash with Canadian weapon laws.
    First, give it a proper guard, like that of a pata, or maybe a square guard, and have the tang run into the grip, like a punch dagger. Next, for the scythe, replace it with an axe blade, but a concave, or bearded one, so it can still reasonably hook weapons. In fact, you could probably shorten the spike, and make the axe blade extend forward, to a point. Additionally, the axe blade would make for a lot of space to put in lots of decorations, and junk.
    And you know what you might have?
    A functioning, usable, more plausible keyblade.

      Sort of like a katar mixed with a bardiche. I'm a firm believer that all weapons could use some more bardiche in them.

      Aren't all melee weapons an extension of the arm?

    • @darthplagueis13
      @darthplagueis13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think what he meant was a straight extension of your forearm. Most weapons are held somewhat rectangular to your forearm instead of being in line with your forearm. The elimination of the wrist joint means that you strike directly from your ellbow which means you get a bit more striking power but you lose a lot of mobility which makes the weapon better at dishing out damage but an awful option for fencing.

    • @Betrix5060
      @Betrix5060 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All weapons should be a natural extention of your body, but the added hinge from one's wrist is an essential component in efficacious use. Without it you lose a lot of leverage and, possibly even more importantly, fine motor control. As novelties I can get behind some them but in terms of utility I'll take conventional arms any day of the week.

    That thing is actually so cool. I'm really picturing it as a very effective thing, since it makes it really easy not to get hit (with 4 places where to hook or trap the opponent's blade) and can capitalize on any kind of opportunity to inflict damage. A lot of people have brought up that knuckle guard detail but in terms of shape and efficiency it's just a really great design!

      For some reason this thing makes me think of a light infantry specialized to kill heavy infantry. So a buckler in the left hand with this in the right. Hook with scythe, pull shield away, block any counter with buckler then hit with the spike. It makes a weird sense to me with a mechanical pattern of pull, deflect and thrust or cut for the kill

    • @Evilgood1
      @Evilgood1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      GraeYstaG It’s a result of the differential hardening process. Iaido came about as a use for the curvature. If you want to talk about katana aesthetics, you really want to talk about their hilts. There’s one part under the wrapping that’s just detrimentally placed

      Why not take the main part of the antler, trim off the tines and branches, and put it through a hole in the shaft?

    • @antonymash9586
      @antonymash9586 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The two issues I see with that is trying to drive the tine thrugh the wood without spliting it too badly without any drilling equiment avalible to you. The other is that the way you would use it would act to drive the antler out of the wood and not into it.
      The only good solution I have is to embed the antler into the branch whilst its still alive. Alow the tree to grow around it and then cut it. In much the same way as the famus WW1 bicycal embeded in a tree.

    I taught Ruykyu-ru kobujitsu and the tong-fa was one of my favourite weapons. Your fantasy design is a great hand extension of a sort of pole arm "carbine".
    My personal tong-fa were fasioned by my brother after he saw me demonstrated the classic ipon kumite with a pair of the police version. What he came up with was fashioned from the center section of two Louisville slugger white ash baseball bats cut about an inch thick with handles made from one inch thick LEXAN rod capped with wooden knobs (mordus and tennon joint).
    The part of the tong-fa that impressed him most was not what could be done with it as a punch augmented thrust, but rather its potential as a spinning centrifugal force weapon...and his prototype is a superb example of that.
    Re-visit your design but instead of making it an elaborate punch augmentation make the nasty part more like the blade of a propeller to fit as a fend off/pare bar on your forearm and make it to spin and return there by balance and length...never mind attaching it to your arm...you are missing more than half the potential of the tong-fa.

      Adam Di'Cristofaro you probably wouldn't want to catch anyblades on a guard such as that due to the angle your arm bends at preventing you from deflecting it well enough. Probably best to parry using the part that straps to your outer arm

    This looks great! Regardless of its praticality, you can really see that you just woke up someday and thought "how much mechanical advantage can I get within a single weapon?". That's an engineer's dream weapon right there - maximum efficiency at delivering mechanical energy.
    I kind of wish that you also made an synthetic, somewhat sparring-ready version (I don't think it's possible to make a version of this safe for full-contact, full speed sparring due to its very nature as a high-energy weapon) and tried it out. I bet it could work surpringly well, specially with a shield.

    Really cool design. The one change I'd make is to do something different with the back hook. The shape of it means the only direction of binding the enemy's weapon is towards your torso. You can't really rotate your arm to bind it away from you. I'd maybe angle it forward rather than back, or possibly even "outward" so that it seems to be angle out and to the right of you as you're facing the weapon. This would make the 3 edges come out forming the corner of a cube shape, and allow you to bind across your body and then essentially backhand the enemy with a short pick.

  • @jonenglish6617
    @jonenglish6617 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like your design. twisting flat bar to make the scythe blade was a good idea that minimizes the amount of material needed. I have two suggestions: #1 attach the straps with "ears" that you can bend up towards your arm. This would prevent a blade sliding down during a parry from slicing the straps off, and would make the straps more effective due to the angle change. #2 make a dummy practice version and spar with it at Blood and Iron. You might decide that you want to change something or you might decide that it is perfect the way it is. Cheers.

    It's really nice to see you being able to test custom fantasy designs, be they good or not. As for this one, definitely feels weird to me, the shape, and especially the tonfa style handle and the straps, since a tonfa is made to rotate in your hand to account for various situations. Very first thing I thought when watching the video here was "if the ennemy can grab the weapon, that's a broken arm or wrist". When hooked though, I can see the handle giving you a strenght advantage.
    In combat, I would probably use this along with a parrying dagger in the off hand, so if you hook the ennemi weapon or even body, you can pull him into even closer range or prevent him from going away, and then go with the dagger to finish him. The parrying dagger would also be nice to cover your off side a bit, for you, parrying on the left side might be harder than on the right side. It would be nice to test those things against blades and axes.

    I remember being completely underwhelmed by your last "fantasy sword" (the messer-saber-something hybrid with the tiny off-center decoration), which was about as fantastic as a butter knife.
    This is a quite original design, good work. It has a few practical issues, like not being able to spin like a tonfa or even change the angle of the blade, and being strapped to your arm. More importantly, it would look far better with a blade instead of a spike, which could be connected with a more flowing outline (and other aesthetical improvements).
    The point is, this is the first of your designs where I'd have no trouble giving a (slightly improved) version a special place in a fantasy setting. Congratulations.
    P. S. For an improved version, aside from aesthetic improvements, maybe try experimenting with a half-circle that locks on your elbow in all directions but one, similar to the handles you would find on modern crutches. Maybe you can fit it in a way that the muscles in the forearm shift to hold or slip through the grip depending on the angle of your wrist.

    The only thing I would change on it (aside from what was mentioned in the video) would be to add more of a contour to the brace portion so it's more comfortable to wear. This would also add more deflective properties to the overall design.

  • @Void9Zephyr4
    @Void9Zephyr4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your secondary hook should be a sword breaker lattice, and the hook should be before the straps (as they can clearly be cut which could disarm you in one go); perhaps a spike on the elbow. Besides the basic function of those parts, the entire length could be more ergonomic, to increase the work efficiency of all attacks/parries. Anything past that would be like re-attachable/retractable ends to the forearm base to make it as useful/sexy as possible. It's a good start for a scythed halberd fist weapon (which would be more pokey than axey). Interesting idea!

  • @adamdavis8892
    @adamdavis8892 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Skall, what you dreamed up there is really close to the ancient Chinese weapon known as the Ji, which was the next step up from the Ge, also known as the "dagger axe". They had halberd length versions of course, but it wasn't unusual for short hafted versions to be used of both the Ge and Ji. The Ji initially came about by adding a socketed spear head to the haft of the Ge, with later versions being made with the spear point already part of the blade of the Ji. Looks pretty effective in your testing too, neat concept with the side handle aside from the limitations that you pointed out.
