Judicial Duel were all about even odds, so givng the opponents unusual or even weird weapons would help to ensure that no one had an advantage from being used to it.
I can definitely imagine the armorer who was visited by the "good idea fairy" trying to hawk a blingy flick spear. Or the journeyman presenting the piece to his guild: "yeah it's probably not practical, but look how COOL and well made it is".
The Journeyman's old master dragging himself back into the guildhall after a tavern-crawl "Add a Greek Fire Siphon to it." before collapsing into a puddle of vomit.
Legendary collab , i wished for a video like this since i saw your old videos with the crossbow that todd made. Thanks to that video i learned about Todds Workshop, i thank you for that!
Really nice to see you working with Matt and Tod....also weird weapons for the win. Hope you had a good time and if possible.....more collabs in the future?
Dequitem had an interesting conclusion after fighting with hussite flail for several hours in full plate armor. It's easier for non-trained guy to score a hit because it moves unpredictably. But it's harder to control the weapon precisely for the same reason.
I saw the other video and all I can see in your eyes is "Give me the sword"! Loved the collaboration. All three of you have different skill sets and it was amazing.
YES!!! I'm glad you got to do this and I hope there's more to come of it. I'd love to see you sparring with Matt and testing some of Tod's stuff. Discussing more unusual historical weapons is always fun too. Hope you had a great trip!
It really is a great skill that he can just see something in a museum, that doesn't exist outside of that setting, and make it himself so people can do more than just look and write about it.
My dream Collab! I've been following you for years now hoping something with Matt Easton might happen! Haven't even watch it yet and I'm gonna comment and hit the like button.
that flick partisan spear follows the rule of cool. Imagine being the one nobleman in Renaissance Italy that arms his bodyguards with these. Everyone else is limited to short weapons inside a carriage, but then you come out with 4 bodyguards behind you. They all flick out their weapons and like some 16th century transformers, they suddenly are all armed with spears. They dont have to be durable. They just need to work once when needed, but nobody is going to mess with you and your army of transformer spears when everyone else is carrying shorter weapons.
I always love when we can see a TH-camr do a video with the 'Guys-on-Top'. Just standing around talking on the same level & being able to understand each other just fine. These guys are the ones running the HEMA training studios & working with the Museums, so to see them making a video with TH-camr like yourself that doesn't have access to all the resources they have, is in it's own way them acknowledging your own experience as well.
The Messers were more likely to circumvent guild laws. Sword guild and knife guild were separated during that time, and the classification of both were mainly in construction. I suppose that's also Sword law in some way xD
At first glance i thought that it was Matt Parker from Standupmaths on the thumbnail and then i realised that there are 2 different bald Matts on TH-cam.
It can be hard to tell on his channel when he's alone in frame, because Matt Easton is long and lean, but when he is next to others you can see that he is quite a bug guy.
Awesome! I’ve watched Matt’s video and now yours, and it suggests you guys got up to one more video worth of mischief at Tod’s place?? Can’t wait to see what you guys shoot, fire, launch, or smash! 😊😂
Awesome to see all three of you together. I think a lot of these weapons fall into the “experimental category.” Someone came up with an idea, the idea disseminates throughout the communities and eventually you have enough people copying the idea to test it, and they never catch on.
There's essentially an Italian Boarding Sword that has a blade that's the opposite of the Sword Breaker. Other strange weapons are Indian Zulfiqar, Liao Dao, Congo Axe-Knife, Ngombe Ngulu, Spanish 19th Century Light Cavalry Hook Saber (hand string cutter), Tarch Shield, Targone Shield, Haladie Dagger, Reverse Tanto Knife, and German WW1 Engineers Sawback Bayonet.
The chain flail feels like one of those times where you just happen to have, against all the odds, a prototype idea, even when there's a few of them. People testing a way to make a more effective weapon that just didn't work. The sword hammer definitely has the feel of a sporting weapon as was mentioned. Weird sporting items seem a craze of the renaissance era. I can imagine the hook being a mounting point for displaying on a stand in a tent, like those in the field of the cloth of gold.
Excellent collaboration!!! Seeing your take on all of these weapons that I've been enamoured by on Todd's channel is really cool. Something of an in person reaction video! Being hands on with the objects really elevates it, too, since you don't need to speculate on how it feels in the hand. (Maybe add "reaction" to the title so people know? Those types seems to be popular) Really cool to see you guys together, honestly, and I hope you had a great time!
@@alwincamitz4747 Caged targa is the shield in this vid made by Tod. Gou-Rang is a Chinese buckler with long hooked arms for parrying. Skall has done a vid on the Gou-Rang.
Sword breaker... something everyone seems to focus on the damage side of the definition for the word break. Damage is part of the definition but not all. If you take a lunch break your work is not damaged. If you are out jogging and someone crosses your path and breaks your stride you don't need to go to the hospital. If you are thinking and someone breaks your concentration you don't get a migraine. Breaking an action is just as valid as breaking apart, and it's the action that is broken with a sword breaker. And I don't think it would be used to control the opponents weapon for any substantial length of time, just long enough to get a counter attack in with the primary weapon and then loosen the grip so they have to fumble with releasing their weapon while you attempt more attacks but could easily release since you control the clamp.
I suppose if you work for someone rich enough to afford a flick spear, they could afford repairs, too. A guard pulling a full-sized spear out his back pocket would spook me if I were a bandit poacher... Not exactly a good idea, but I could see the logic they probably used when making them. I love the greatsword-hilted hammer, haha! It definitely reminds me of other tournie weapons.
What I find weird about it is: Why not make an actual shortsword with better hilt? The idea that it might have been designed to circumvent sword laws makes sense to me.
I suppose its possible that rondel hilt was used because you can really put force into it and pull it back out relatively easily with less risk of losing your weapon - the disc retain the hand making your grip strength a bit less important in inserting and removing your tool from the first target. But I do agree with Skall and the others really it feels more like a deliberate 'technical' compliance idea more than anything else, as there are better hilts for carrying or using it in a more sword like way.
for the spring loaded spear, I don't think the fragility really matters at all, and I don't think it necessarily is a "show off" weapon. It clearly is NOT a battlefield weapon, it isn't going to be hitting armor, or be hit by other spears. It clearly is meant for areas where you don't want a big weapon. Like the inside of a carriage. If you're in a sleigh/carriage/etc in the middle of a cold winter with the doors closed with a guard or two, they can have one of these inside and deploy it if some bandits or whatever bother you.
The sentence of not transferring as much energy on the knockback against a horse is really eye opening in favor of flexible weapons. Considering a mass of muscles running towards your lines and you with with a spear or staff, I imagine it could easily break some wrists. I see those weapons in a new light now. This collab is great :D
I saw that hammer with crossguard thing at the museum when I was in London back in the spring. As soon as I saw you pick that up I was excitedly telling my wife "Hey, I saw that!" I'm pretty sure I took a picture of it, too.
"So basically, most of them have a single shaft and you just fold the head out. It locks into place, the arms throw out and you're there" Yeah, I'm familiar with the action... NO, wait?
That belt clip/hanger on the pollaxe-sword could also be a weird attempt at some kind of blade catcher. Although i don't think it ever caught anything, haha.
Enjoying Skall's POV camera of Tod's weird weapons. Really shows off the quality Tod puts into every piece, even these projects.
Yeah, his craftsmanship is fantastic.
a collab i wasn't even hoping for! thanks! ❤🔥

My thoughts too.
Give both sides a weapon they never used before
People have always been doing challenge runs even before gaming.
Great video, Skall! It's so good to see you, Tod, and Matt teaming up!
The excessively long Rondel dagger is for when you need to perform a stealth-takedown on a VERY fat guy, or two guys standing next to each other :P

That Street Fighter intro though? Chef's kiss!
Oh damn its all of my favorite weapon history youtubers collabing! Heck yeah!
That little buckler is one of my favourite things featured on Tod's channel. If he sold them, I'd buy one.
This is the kind of content I can watch easily. A bit of history, a a couple weapons, 5-8 minutes per item.

The Triangle of blunt and edged Culture. What a pleasant collab.
The beauty off the long shaft flails with shorter chains is it's easier to avoid hitting yourself. Much harder to damage yourself with it.
