      Ogden, the innkeeper said it similarly. "You can cut the flesh, but you must crush the bone."
      So for zombies, crawlers, and dark ones, a sword or axe, and mace or hammer for the skeletons. Ironically, I found that, due to damage, an axe actually covers both.

    Because skeletons don't have muscle to get in the way their movement is limited only by the strength of their bones and the involved magic (or perhaps even just the magic). So with the right magic you can give a skeleton two swords, have it stick its arms out and then spin its torso around at a very high speed to create a circle of death. Dare you face the...

      Thing is, as Skall points out, wouldn't the fact that they have no extra mass **severely** hinder how much damage they can do? Maybe to an unarmored and unarmed person they're deadly, but i think even someone with almost anything they can get their hands on {things like kitchen utensils and general tools} would be able to at least repel any of the Skeleton's attacks with ease.
      As for people with even light armor, the Skeletons would have a very hard time hitting them, as remember what i said above plus armor that's meant to prevent damage from fully developed men, so chances are their weapons and attacks are probably going to feel like a little kid wacking you with a toy.

    In most magical Worlds Skeletons are the way you described them. The Magic holds the Bones together while a Magic entity controls the vessel. The stronger the Necromancer the stronger the Skeleton will be and the more force is required to detach the Bones from the Body. Also the more Skeletons the Necromancers summons the weaker they are. In some Worlds the summoned Magic Entity that controls the Bones is "trapped" in the Head so by destroying the Head the Entity escapes and the Skeleton falls apart or stops Moving (depending on the Magic Universe you end up inside).

      Hmm, I wonder why other arrangements of bones are not made that would be much better than your standard skeleton like a huge skeleton that basically is a exoskeleton, or skele-blender like the top guy suggested or why not just make a whirlwind of bone fragments to obliterate everyone I never really understood why necromancer in most fantasy universes haven't try'd that.

    • @Wright805
      @Wright805 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ARX 351 Not always. In some stories the deceased person's soul has moved on to the afterlife and the skeleton is basically a puppet animated by a necromancer and/or some kind of malevolent spirit.

      @Wright805 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jadon Stinson The "Fighting Fantasy" gamebooks by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone have exactly that. Sure they have regular skeletons but there's a whole bunch of alternate types. There's the Bone Devil (exactly the "whirlwind of bone fragments" you describe), there are skeletons with bony plates fused to them (exoskeletons again like you describe), floating skulls, skulls with legs fused to them, skeletons with four arms and so on. They're amazing!

    For magic that reanimates skeletons, I always thought it would invoke "the memory of the bones" and make them move in the way the bones did when they belonged to a living organism. This would also mean that the skeleton of a highly skilled swordsman would also be a lot more powerful than a skeleton of a farmer. Anyone got any thoughts about this?

    • @johndododoe1411
      @johndododoe1411 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine the opposite: The bones being controlled by being inside a full ghost of their former body with all skills, memory and soul. Any armor would do the same. So the ghost can fight and talk and do everything else, using the bones and armor as body substitute. Prisoners chains remain attached too.

    How about fighting a Golem?
    I reckon they'd be just about the most difficult fantasy creature to fight, depending on the size and material they're made from. A 3m tall, vaguely humanoid colossus, built for combat, animated by magic, made of a single solid material all the way through. No vital points, no soft tissues to damage, and far sturdier than any living creature.

    A "realistic" fantasy movie/book would be quite hilarious. All the usual tropes, just a little bit different: imagine the standard way to fight skeletons is just to pick them up and throw them around. This would be something well know in a world where you would encounter such creatures regularly.
    Every time I see all this theory crafting by Skall, Shad and their fans, I just wish somebody integrated these thoughts into their work already. ^^
    Edit: Also: Weighted nets (with like lead balls or something) might be really good, as skeletons are usually shown as stupid and they could get tangled up, with their low mass themselves the impact might trip them. Often they are also on the weaker side compared to humans so the weights on the net might actually keep them down for quite some time.

      Did some quick looking around, and the dry skeleton of a 200-pound man should weigh in around 7 to 12 pounds. That's not hard to lift and throw one-handed. You could easily grab the skeleton by the spine-- making it impossible for it to retaliate-- and smash it against every convenient wall until it's pulverized. The sassy black girl from Scary Movie was right all along!

    I like the way skeletons are portrayed in Planescape: Torment: the skeletons are literally just reanimated, and the fragility of the skeletal structure and the natural decay of the bones is dealt with separately; skeletons have iron bolts to reinforce joints and serve as connection points for artificial muscles and ligaments (usually leather straps). Their armor is also grafted to their body, and they can have several enchantments woven onto their body and armor that deal with things like decay, damage, senses (skeletons have no eyes, ears or noses), or other magic users trying to undo or alter the magic placed on the bones, for example.

    I like to imagine reanimation magic for skeletons as a spectral muscle system, as in something that gives them the ability to move and the strength to actually wield and swing a weapon, certain variations in systems like in D&D can make the skeletons tougher as well depending on the power so it is a nice way to imagine it as the magic force becoming more solid, in that sense the force field isnt too out of the question as long as we keep in mind it wouldnt be an invincible one or in fact a rather weak one, as far as weak points well of course anything that breaks the bones so no wonder blunt weapons would work best, some instances have a magic focus such as a particular type of gem on the eye sockets in which cases you might need to break whichever part the magic focus is on or they might continue moving regardless, yes I have put a lot of thought into this so I wanted to add a bit, who knows, it could be useful advice... some day... maybe...

    • @cobraglatiator
      @cobraglatiator 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      personally i've created a few different types of skeletons i hope to have implemented, there's ones that use magic runes to act as joints/tendons/ligaments, ones that have a central rune that controls the whole thing that has to be disrupted, haunted ones that you just have to kill again(as if they were alive.) and ones that you either have to smash into dust/bits, and/or find the mage who's risen them,and end him/his magical influence.
      P.S. if you don't mind commenting on this, which do you find a more interesting/cooler idea for dragons: they can change shape between two forms, a beast like, dragon form(just look like a dragon.) and a more humanoid form, but they can't jsut be whoever they want, they have a face, that's their face. or there's two types of dragons(this one, i feel, really only makes sense if i provide the lore/context,so if you need/want that, let me know.) ones that are only dragon like, they're just as intelligent, but bigger, meaner, monster-y-er, and ones that're all humanoid. ? if you care to answer that, thanks!
      ~Cobra.

    • @RansHappyGamingFamily
      @RansHappyGamingFamily 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I tend to go with both, actual dragons being powerful magical creatures capable of changing into a specific humanoid form (although depending on the situation/magic they might be able to choose other forms too), as well as there being dragonborns, half-dragons and other draconic beings that have dragon traits without being an actual dragon or having the monstrous form

    • @cobraglatiator
      @cobraglatiator 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, the original idea, was the first one, y'see, the dragons long time ago had a thousand year long war against their gods, when they came back they were pretty terrifying and fought each other a lot,so many races banded together to drive them off, they went into hiding, and originally:they learned polymorph,learned how to have their children know it upon birth, and then at the point of any of the campaigns i hoped to take part in,they'd be able to switch between a dragon form and a more human looking form. they were in hiding and assumed to be extinct,btw. but now i kinda wonder, what if the dragons couldn't switch, but there were dragons that look human(maybe a bit elf-ish) but are most definitely dragons, and dragons who look like dragons?

    "fall has arrived"? it's still goddamn 32°C here!
    'nyways, a sort of open claw-like hammer would really be a great thing if we're considering skeletons that you can dismantle, dead bone is hard and brittle so the concentrated impact by hitting them with a spike/claw can shatter the bone in mid-air or, if it doesn't happen, you would still fling away a couple of structural bones.

  • @ninjahombrepalito1721
    @ninjahombrepalito1721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Maybe you could use the sword to cut the magic between the bones, or, even an arming sword like the one you had could probably break some vertebrae. Specially because there's no flesh in the way. Break some fingers so it cannot use a weapon. Now, things like rapiers would definitely be basically useless. Or only good for blocking attacks. Or improvised mace. Also helps that rapiers are not meant to cut.
    .
    Wouldn't an armor with more give better absorb the impact thus having less chance of denting?

    "They probably wouldn't fight with finesse."
    Ironically, a skeleton in DnD would probably be armed with a Finesse _Weapon_ (that is, a weapon with the "Finesse" property), allowing it to use its Dexterity score for to-hit and damage rolls, rather than Strength (the default for melee weapons that don't have Finesse). At least that's how it's done in 5th edition.

      While we're on the subject, it's worth looking at the Skeleton stat block in DnD 5e, to sort of understand the logic the designers put on it.
      They're physically weak - Strength 10 - so they get no modifier to Strength-based rolls (including to avoid being knocked down). Skeletons have no muscles, so that's logical. They have to rely on their 14 Dexterity for their attacks, limiting them to Finesse or ranged weapons. That's borne out in their default weapon selection, which are shortswords and short bows.
      Armor Class is 13, with a parenthesis saying "armor scraps". Part of that AC obviously comes from the +2 Dex modifier, which means "scraps of armor" give an AC of 11 + Dex mod, which is only 1 better than having no armor at all. For reference, Armor Class works at the target number an opponent must meet or exceed on their to-hit roll; otherwise, they do no damage. In DnD 5e, damage is all or nothing.
      Finally, Skeletons have Vulnerability to bludgeoning damage. Because of course they would. Although it's interesting that the designers went with giving skeletons Vulnerability to bludgeoning, while other damage types (besides Poison, to which they are immune; Poison always gets the shaft) do normal damage. As opposed to making skeletons take normal damage from bludgeoning, and be Resistant to piercing and slashing. Then again, skeletons are low CR (Challenge Rating) monsters, so it's reasonable that a starting level party could take them on without too much difficulty.

      That's because 5e did it wrong. Look at old school rpg and the skeletons are strong and armed with shield and sword or shield and axe.

      The skeletons in Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder were goddamn fast and nasty. The worst of all the rank and file troops in that game.

    Hey Skall, ever thought about talking about the different types of pommels and hilt and their functionality?
    For example how the colhona sword was used or about the cocked hat pommel sword, considered precusor of the longsword

    Here's another good one to talk about with October around the bend. How about an animated suit if armor. A suit if armor brought to life via magic, or possessed by a soul. How do you fight that? The whole thing is nothing but armor. Imagine how difficult it must be to fight just the armor with no one inside to kill to stop it from moving.

      same issue with skeletons though...it'd be stupidly light weight. though if it was intelligent I guess it could fill itself with lots of heavy cloth or something to give it extra weight. also the rules of this particular magic has to be taken into consideration. depending on the system you could literally just say "pour some water on it and it'll scare the spirit away" though if you mean it just stays in the suit of armor indefinitely then I guess you'd just tear it apart piece by piece. at which case a poleaxe with a hammer head or the mace/club/bat shown in the video would do the trick.

      Makes sense. Something to do with fire could work as well if the pieces are held together physically with say leather or rope. Unless the suit is magically put together then trying to break off pieces would work fairly well.

      I would go with a pretty heavy haver. You can "amputate" limbs that way easy, or at least crush joins so badly they cant physically articular anymore.

    So the lesson to be learned for every competent necromancer is to recruit some good blacksmith's and commision them to custom fit armor for the skeleton legions.
    It whould also be way easyer to make armor for a skeleton:
    1) A Skeleton does not care for comfort so padding can be minimalized
    2) A Skeleton is 24/7 on duty so you dont need to account for getting out of the armor. Heck it can be screwed/welded/bolted directely to the bones.
    3) You need less material to cover everything.

    Hey Skallagrim if you see this, do you know if Cold Steel is a good brand? I've been thinking of buying a war hammer or mace from Amazon and that what was listed as the manufacturer.
