      The counter to this might be a balsa wood staff. You strike, anticipating that you will chop through the staff but you don't anticipate that it will offer such extremely light resistance that the force of your strike throws you off balance.

    Drakkengard had an enchanted hammer that also destroyed a person's memories when it hit them. Though it's debatable if that's because of magic or because you were hitting them in the head with a hammer.

    The best enchantment is clearly an enchantment that makes your sword emenate a blinding light on command. Not only does it have great utility outside of battle, but it can blind your opponents in a fight and most importantly it makes you the coolest swordsman to ever live because you're obviously always fighting with sunglasses

    Quick note before the video is finished: The worker you mentioned, the one that ran his hand through molten steel, he didn't get harmed because he was quick alone like when you pass your hand over and open flame. His hand was also wet, causing leidenfrost effect, it's where a layer of steam is created between a source of heat and another medium insulating the said medium from heat. I don't wanna be annoying but I just don't want anyone to run their hand thorugh molten metal quickly thinking it would not hurt them.

    Saber’s sword from the Fate series has high speed compressed air encircling it. The air changes the refraction of light making the sword’s blade invisible. Opponents cannot judge the sword’s range nor can they see it’s shape. The compressed air can also be launched as a fatal projectile. And she can somewhat foresee the course of battle using one of her skills.

    *Silence* - The blade and whatever it strikes make no noise at all. Perfect for assassinations.
    *Thunder* - The blade makes a booming, thunderous noise whenever it strikes. Intimidating, but mostly just cool.
    *Smoke* - The blade makes a cloud of smoke with every strike. Encourages a tricky fighting style.
    *Torch* - The blade releases a flash of light when striking. Good for exploring in the dark. Not very good for fighting.
    *Blinding* - Only the cutting edge releases a flash of light. Doesn't flash the wielder in the eyes, only his opponent.
    *Superheated* - The blade itself is very hot and cuts through armor.
    *Igniting* - Whatever it strikes catches fire. The blade itself is cool, immune to its own enchantment. Perhaps leaves a residue of very flammable material on whatever it strikes and this residue does not ignite on the sword.
    *Lightning* - Electric shock. Overpowered. Potential nerf: blade has to be struck by lightning to gain its charge. Double nerf: the sword can only call lightning in certain conditions, ie during a natural storm or on a mountaintop (like Gandalf luring the Balrog up the Endless Stair to the mountaintop to deliver the lightning-charged killing blow).
    *Venom* - Poisoned blade, doesn't even have to be magical.
    *Curse* - Similar to venom but with some unholy magic effect, like the Morgul Blade turning Frodo into a wraith.
    *Hex* - Shitty goblin version of Curse, afflicted person is unlucky and has strange things happen to them for awhile.
    *Soul Harvest* - No combat effect, but the sword claims the soul of anything it slays. Perhaps the souls empower the sword itself or perhaps the sword is just a means of collecting them for some other necromantic use.
    *Bloodthirst* - Similar to Soul Harvest but with blood magic. The sword physically absorbs/drinks any blood it touches, growing a deeper shade of red. Blood may empower the sword, or fuel some blood magic, or perhaps may simply feed a demon imprisoned in the blade. Sometimes might need to drink your own blood.
    *Cursed Blade* - If mortal heroes dispatch your shitty skeleton warriors and try to use their armaments, they will find themselves cursed by wielding the blade. Good for arming hordes of undead, golems, or robots.
    *Consecration* - Consecrates the ground beneath the blade when striking or perhaps only when parrying/parried. Good for keeping hordes of undead at bay.
    *Transparency* - Better for a shield. One-way transparency so the wielder can see through it.
    *Invisibility* - A completely invisible blade could be useful, especially if the wielder is familiar with its length and the opponent is not. Defending against it would be difficult. Ideally the hilt is not also invisible, otherwise this enchantment would be something of a nuisance.
    *Musical* - Striking with the blade plays music. Blade dancer type enchantment. Perhaps each different type of strike plays a different note, and experienced blade dancers display their skill by playing a song while also dismantling their opponents. Or perhaps the sword knows what song it wants played, and grows stronger with each correct note.
    *Purge* - Dispels magical effects from whoever it strikes. Super useful in fantasy with a lot of magic / buffs (mm, Carsomyr in Baldur's Gate 2).
    *Void* - Shield enchant, shield surface is a portal to a bottomless void. Would allow you to get very, very close, or even snag your opponent's weapon on the wrong side of the portal inside your shield. Tragically useless as a sword enchant. Probably overpowered as hell for its out-of-combat utility.
    *Pain* - Pretty much for torture without damaging the victim too badly. I could see this enchanted on a Nazgul's dagger or secondary weapon. Would have to have some intimidating red visual effect.
    Well that was fun. I could do this for hours and come up with some ridiculous shit. Hell, Cupid runs around with arrows enchanted with Lust, why can't the player have some bizarre effects? Personally I like Stone to Flesh. No, not Flesh to Stone, Stone to Flesh. You can animate any statue you happen to come across, but most of the time you just turn rocks into a stinking gory mess.

    About the ice enchantment - keep in mind that even if the enemy is in thick heavy armour, freezing it will make it much more brittle and also the shrinking could lead in cracks aka hitting the armour with the sword would be just like hitting a porcelain vase with a kitchen knife (better not try it). Actually when you think about it - this might be the best enchantment, since it is able to easily destroy any metal weapon or armor on impact, and all you need is to think up of a way to keep your own blade from freezing.

    • @edwardnigma9756
      @edwardnigma9756 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Easily countered by a having a nonconductive hilt. And if the person is wearing armour, they are unlikely to be electrocuted because of all the padding material they wear under it.
      It might kill someone by disrupting their heart if it drew blood and formed a closed circuit that included the heart (See the Darwin's Award "Resistance is futile"). Swords being designed the way they are, that seems unlikely to me. Maybe a flanged mace would be better, although it would probably have the same effect as a taser.
      Then again I'm assuming a small electrical current, if it was powerful enough to overcome all the resistance of the armour, padding, and human flesh, it would probably have the same effect as a lightning strike, but be wary of keeping it on for too long or you might melt your blade! Also, try not to let your guard be broken or you'll electricute yourself!

    I know I'm late to the video, but I think a transmutation enchantment that transmutes anything it strikes into gold would be OP. Not only is gold much softer than steel, but it's also almost 3 times heavier. Plus you could melt down and sell your fallen foes to pay your troops. Win-win!
    You parry a strike, and suddenly your sword is almost 3 times as heavy and bends/dulls as easily as aluminum. Next strike lands on your wooden round shield, and it increases over 23 times(!) its normal weight. If it's strapped to your arm, you're hitting the ground with it. It might even dislocate your shoulder and tear a few muscles.Thicker cloth garments hit with this sword/hammer would send the wearer crashing to the ground as they are slowly crushed to death by their own armor. Even thin steel plate would become incredibly hard to move in. This is how I imagine the Burden enchantment in Oblivion should have worked.

    • @Arexion5293
      @Arexion5293 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Otherwise that's a good idea, but momentum, vectors, gravity, mass, acceleration. All of these things will be heavily affected by time-stasis if the idea is that it does indeed cease the object's flow of time. In other words, the moment you cast the time-stasis, your sword will fly through the goddamn planet (depending on angle) straight into space at the combined speed of the planet's rotation and movement. After all, it is frozen in time, thus nothing can move it, not even a black hole.
      Meaning the person casting the time-stasis on the blade needs to be able to manipulate this unmovable, unbreakable object as well, making time manipulation a mandatory ability. And if you have time manipulation to begin with, you have no need for a weapon of any kind.
      So the time-stasis cannot be absolute, as otherwise your sword will cease caring about gravity and will just be stuck at those very specific coordinates in space.

It would also be frustrating to block as it would have a slightly circular motion. For the wielded this wouldn’t matter as they know the timing and what to expect with it.

Could be interesting to play around with this *by having lightning weapons come with sets of armor that while not ideal protection and somewhat restrictive in moment, provide it's wearer with impeccable insulation from their own electrical attacks.* Maybe even have a *"crafting tree"* that deals with *making the insulated armor not better (in a vertical sense) than other wears nor even give it conductive properties (after all it's super insulated!) but instead it just makes the armor not SO cumbersome and less akward to move in.* The idea is eventually getting the insulated armor to "about the same" stats and performance as other mid tier armors (how ever that's designed), *an acceptable trade off as the warrior can wield (with little restriction on movenents at this point) the AWSOME POWER of freakin lightning, (a walking tesla coil of...DEATH)* basically cooking most unarmored foes alive. *Wiping out hordes of unarmored enemies with a few discharges of electricity,* arcs of lightning roasting them if they have not properly grounded themselves. *As for armored opponents, even fully "plated" only at best offer a small amount of protection not to mention the fast heat built up!* The currents of electricity would travel along the metal plates *(always travels path of least resistance) and not the wearer inside so long as each piece was properly connected to eachother. (possibly with metal wiring?)* That's wear the weapon itself comes into play designed to cut (serrated edges?) or knock loose the connecting parts of the plate armor, not easy since your opponent isn't just going to stand there and let you hit them...but doable.

    That weight enhancement is one of several that pops in my head when I saw the title, though I picture it slightly different. The weight is always as light as feather for you, but it weighs a castle for your foe, instead of constantly changing the weight on impact.
    Another one is shape changing enhancement. While it is useful to have one sword that can change it's shape into any kind of sword according to your needs, imagine you thrusting your sword toward your opponent's neck, but made it so that you miss. And when he let his guard down, knowing your thrust miss it's mark, you alter the shape of your sword as if the blade branches to the side and made a cut. Other scenario is you could alter the length of your sword when your enemy have memorized the range of your sword. That counts as shape changing too right?
    As of elemental enhancements (fire, water, etc) most people would want to make some sort of slashing attack that "launch" whatever elements thier sword have along with the slash.
    And another element I thought of is light, no, it's not for turning your sword into lightsaber, but it could function as your source of illumination when fighting in the dark, or when your enemy is blocking your attack (where your sword is closer to their face) you could direct the light to your opponent's face, blind them momentarily, and go for the kill.
    Lastly, I think this is the enhancement that could "negate" defense, intangibility enhancement. You can use your sword normally to defend yourself, but when you attack, your sword goes intangible, right through their defense, whether its another sword, any weapon, shield, or any armor, and becomes tangible once it touches your opponent's flesh.
    This is quite nice topic, shame I didn't discover your channel sooner.

      A shapeshifting blade should be restrained to a determined number of shapes to not be way to ridiculous.

    There is one of the more obvious enchantments that you overlooked, but it's less sword-fight related and more just a nice perk- a self maintaining piece of equipment.
    Think of how damn useful something like that would be. It doesn't even need to be a super fast repair job in the case of damaging the item in question for balance, but as a convenience measure it'd be insane. Busted some rings on your maille vest? No worry, it'll be good as new by morning, and it won't have rust patches in the armpit area. Sword has a knick in it? Don't grind it out, just wait a little while. Now if it's outright broken in half or completely sundered beyond repair, then it might take a lot longer to fix itself, or it might not even work at all.

    Another is Kira Izuru, whose blade causes anything it hits to double in weight, and again with every hit, until the enemy is left inmobile.
    Lastly there is Saber from Fate Stay/Night. Her sword hides within a layer of turbulent air that keeps the blade virtually invisible, leaving her opponents guessing at her range and angle.

      To Max Power: Well is more like the sword is surrounded by a haze or a mirage-like effect, so it becomes difficult to follow it with the naked eyes.
      Getting caught up in details, she uses this spell because her legendary sword is easy to recognize and that gives away her advantage. But I feel the concept of a blurry blade or made up of transparent-as-glass material can be a pain to fight against by itself.

    About the Mass-changing Sword:
    The argument that the kinetic energy increases with mass only holds if the velocity is constant.
    If instead the impulse of the blade is constant it would actually decrease. As such, if your blade has constant impulse and the mass drops to almost nothing on impact, it would turn into a hyperrelativistic weapon with incredible kinetic energy.

      Poison is trash as an enchantment. Even video games portray this accurately.
      Poison sucks for the same reason that in real life self defense, poison, birdshot, minor wounds, knives, and choking suck: It's slow. Slow enough to work for murder and assassination, but too slow to work for keeping you alive. To protect your life, you need to stop the threat/attacker NOW. If you cut him with poison, and he dies in 10 minutes (which would be CRAZY powerful and fast acting poison), that still doesn't help you if you died 8 minutes before he succumbed to the poison.
      The same thing applies to using birdshot for self defense. Birdshot doesn't penetrate deep enough to reach vital organs, so all it does it produce bleeding. If the bad guy has a handgun, his handgun bullet will kill you long before he bleeds out, if he bleeds out at all. Thus, the birdshot didn't stop him from killing you.
      Same with knives for self defense. Knife fights are stupid and a fight for fools who want to die. For the most part, if both parties in the knife fight have been stabbed multiple times, they will both die. Stabbing the guy 20 times does not help you survive if you've already been stabbed multiple times and will die anyway. Given the time it takes for a person to bleed out, they can still totally kill you. As such, your efforts didn't help you survive.
      Poison only works for fictional magical poisons that work immediately and instantly kill the target. That's akin to an insta-death enchantment that Skal discussed at the beginning and discarded as too OP.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LinkHyrule03 to be fair, i don't think most people use a knife expecting it to save their lives, i think most people use a knife because they're hoping for the scenario of "i have a knife, you don't, walk away or this gets ugly".

      To directly cause damage, most poisons wouldn't be very useful, but some real creatures have extremely painful and fast-acting venom, which could help in a fight. Doesn't need to directly damage the enemy if it makes them have less control of their weapon (the inventor of the Schmidt sting pain index - admittedly an entomologist, not a warrior - had so much pain from a bullet ant bite that he couldn't stop his hand from shaking, though the bite didn't do him any permanent harm).

    • @LinkHyrule03
      @LinkHyrule03 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poison is slow acting.
      The fastest of snake bites takes 10 minutes.
      The fastest of spider bites is still at least 15 minutes.
      That's way too long in a fight.
      Even man-made toxins take time to affect the target, much less the time to just circulate through the system, which is about 2 minutes. Even if you could directly inject the poison into their brain (the organ that is most quickly affected by toxins and poisons), it would still take several seconds to take effect.
      Poison is just too slow to take effect.

      I have an even better idea. Fuse a knife to a rifle, maybe with a specifically designed mechanism to keep it below the barrel.
      I would call this spell "Bayonet"

    I am surprised that you did not mention an automatic pommel launcher or the mother of all sword enchantments- turning it into a katakana

      Katana* not Katakana* that's an alphabet

    • @RylanEdlin
      @RylanEdlin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Common misconception. Katakana is a writing system used to represent a syllabary, not an alphabet.

    • @AttilaTheKhunt
      @AttilaTheKhunt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not a misconception, it's still a sort of alphabet along with Hiragana. It's easier for people to understand that way. I studied Japanology, even though "technically" it's not an alphabet, it's still easier for other people to understand if you describe it that way.

      Well he said no overpowered enchantments, so everything pommel or Katana related is out XD.

    when you mentioned the water jet. I thought of a sword that could just shoot a high powered water jet out of the tip. imagine a range of like a few meters. its basically a super long thrust.

    There's always the enchantment of Caladbolg. When you cut with that sword, it creates giant rainbow discs that can shear the top off a mountain. Or Fragarach, which leaps out of its sheath and lops off your attacker's head before he can draw his own blade.
    Gae Bolg is a spear that, when it's thrown in a particular way, sends thousands of tiny spines throughout the target's body. It's basically instant death. Yeah, Irish weapons tend to have pretty cool powers.

    Kira's enchantment (from Bleach) is also very cool and likely effective: everything the blade touches doubles its weight. If you manage to touch your opponent's blade few times, he won't be able to use it anymore.

    hey skall the other day I was reading a monster hunter reddit post about why the hunters seem to be left handed when it comes to weapons with shields. And apparently the canon explanation is to prioritize your life since blocking with you dominant hand is better. But what is the practicality of that in real life? Is there a fighting style where you use your shield as the main weapon (say it as a spike at the end of it) and the sword as more of defensive one?

    • @llKirosll
      @llKirosll 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      not any specialist in here but I believe, as you train with weapon and shield, you will train to be effective. Use the shield on the 'main' hand isn't efective if you haven't trained that way for your entire life.
      I would train my off hand to be the protective one and the main hand to use the weapon. As they say: the best defense is a good offense that kills your target quickly

      many cultures use shields as secondary weapons. if you are gonna carry something might as well get maximum use out of it. but as a main weapon? none really come to mind.

      The Actual Reason for the Right Handed shield was for animation purposes , Since the S&S in MH allows you to use Items when the Weapon is Draw, the character would "Stab" himself/herself when Drinking that Potion, so the solution was to make it a "Left Handed" weapon.
