    Very well done! The shots where you turned the wood by hand were great for showing the proper angles.

    Well done Jim and please compliment your grand daughter on the excellent job she did with the camera ! Turning is one area where the basics can not be ignored. I worked with wood as a builder and fixer during my career and in retirement I'm learning to have fun with it again.

    Excellent little video, extremely practical, and very well illustrated.

    I tell my students to consider a piece of work put into a pillar drill. Where then to put the toolrest and present the tool. They usually get what you are teaching quickley. Good video.

    Thanks! You have no idea how many videos I watched that failed to adequately explain the method of determining the ideal rest height for more than just one specific type of tool or cut. This one covers a range of situations, some of which have bugged me for a while.

    Excellent! Thank you. This is exactly what I was needing to clarify tool height.

    Very informative Jim, you made some great tips. It's rare to see videos filmed with a camera operator, it adds to the quality of the video. Thanks for sharing..

      Thank you David. My granddaughter is a great help with the whole technology thing. I'm an old dinosaur when it comes to this technology and being in front of a camera.

    Very good video. Most folks do say get the rest as close as possible, but they leave the part about making sure the bevel is not on (or as you say "too near") the rest. ABC makes a lot of sense, but I wouldn't go so far as saying "always". As you know, there are times when the first part of the tool entering the wood is a point (or end of a tool, such as a spindle or bowl gouge). Everyone is familiar with "skating" when doing so, but there's only AC without the B in that case.

    Nice work and all due respect. When I talk safety in my studio and classes, it means to start: bare wrists and arms to the elbow. In other words, no rings, watches, bracelets, or long sleeves....nothing that can accidentally get caught in a rotating machine. Best regards.

    Jim, I would point out the centerline you used was parallel to the floor. This is great in a shop with the lathe centerline at the recommended height. We all love to visit other woodturners and see their shop setups. Turning on another lathe can be challenge when the lathe height is set differently. The solution is to understand that the centerline must rotate up for a taller turner or rotate down for a shorter turner.
    *** The key is the angle of the tool cutting edge to the wood, *** That should always be the angles you demonstrated. The height of the turner, the tool rest, the size of the work, and the distance from the work, and the angle the tool is ground to all have an effect on the angle of the tool cutting edge to the wood,
    John

    Very well presented. Logical, technically accurate and informative. I have one critique; this video is strong on safety but you are wearing a loose metal watch band (on the chuck side) and a ring on your finger. I have seen some pretty nasty cuts by rings that got caught (in one case he nearly lost the finger). You might want to remove these - at least for the videos.

      Gary you are correct! I usually make it a habit to remove them before doing anything with machines period, I just forgot to remove them for the video.

    Great video and very informative.. Some of best camera work I've seen. Your granddaughter is to be commended. BUT... do you really turn while wearing a ring and wristwatch. That's a giant safety no-no.

      @rockspringswoodturner4502  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually no. In getting ready for the video I forgot to take them off. Always remove such before turning!
