    I really can't say enough good things about this project. This is a great way for an average Joe like me to accurately make these detail tools without having a machine shop in the garage. I'm getting some stock and coupling nut very soon.

    Actually Jim, I got another idea myself last night. Take a hex coupler and slide it down the HSS as far as the handle and engrave the spot and lock it there as you described (but permanently). Then take a second hex coupler and put it on an inch from the top, place the facets of both hex nuts on a flat surface to align them, then lock the second hex.

    Very good tip! Thanks a bunch. Have you any suggestions for how to get the nut lined up when you come to resharpen it.

      Add some permanent marker to the tip of the set screw and it will mark the tool shaft. Then use an ingraver or file to permanently mark the tool shaft. Note that as the tool gets shorter you'll have to repeat this.
