I was diligent in cutting all the flowers and runners the first year and this spring my strawberries look amazingly healthy. I cant wait. I got a french variety and am soo excited to have my own fresh strawberries. I refuse to eat those nasty tasteless rocks they sell in the stores. It certainly looks like the effort paid off. This year I can start new plants from the runners to keep these going. Good tips here!
I would randomly place 6 water bottle into the ground. So whenever I need to water the plants I'll just pour it in the water bottles that way it'll go straight into the ground instead of letting it flood the top to kill the berries! Get a few empty 2 litres bottles poke holes all around it(random places) with lil pins/sm.nail so it can leak out slowly! And that'll save you time watering. Just check on it every once in a while to fill it! Btw awesome garden bud congrats!
Debbie Excell you can do but I would still lay some straw over the mulch where your strawberries will rest, the mulch is damp and can cause the fruit to rot. You can substitute the straw for anything that will protect your fruit from the floor but still provide some air circulation.
In Taiwan, The runners start to boom in May when temperature getting hotter. Flowering booms in September when getting cooler. i. e., the runner grows fast in summer due to the temperature rises. So, simply apply shed to cool down, thus, slow down runners growing.
Very nice and explains a lot of why to make sure you get nothing at ALL the first year of strawberry sprouting and growth for LARGE and DEEP strong plants.
I have strawberries overtaking my garden. There are more runners than the London marathon. I've been having to weed out strawberry plants from my spinach next door. Impressively strawberry plants have crossed the path of paving to start growing on the lawn. I get at least 3 good crops of fruit every year.
I just git my first batch of strawberry plants. I did not know how to plant the so i had to re-plant. Now bc of u I know what to do with them the first year. Thank s.
Very helpful information. I'm having 25 plants right now, 7 months already but they give very few flowers and some little green strawberry. I will cut off the runners to focus on the roots growing stronger. I hope they'll give me more sweet strawberries next year.
I bought strawberry plants in April and I saw a video to cut the flowers of and the runners for 6 weeks it's been 6 weeks but my strawberry plants do not look good they look so small so I think that cutting the flowers and the runners for a year makes sence to grow strong roots thank you for your advice and I will wait for next year for my strawberry plants to grow.
Base of u cut just below the bloom the stem will be left and will waste the plant a bit of energy and that stem can cause diease if it starts to rot better to most of that stem
in the Philippines we grow strawberry in our backyard planted in recycled bottled water, it grows and yield fruits. this way can easily transfer to a protected area during typhoon and flood. I think the idea is also applicable in some other places like in non tropic one.
commercially the growers prep in august, plant in september, take all leaves after first frost then mulch heavily till spring when the plants burst forth with huge berries
Ricardo Haßelbeck it does sound like a runner to me! Look up on the internet strawberry runner and see if it looks the same. I would suggest taking that runner off and letting the plant grow some more, as I took my runner off and it grew loads and is now sending out another runner!! If it’s a long stem coming out of the plant then it should be a runner. After the plant looks really big and full, keep the runner on and let it reproduce by pinning it into the soil where the leaves form. Take off all flowers too in the first year, to let it put all its energy into reproducing and growing bigger, and then let it flower and fruit in the second year. It seems like a waste, but you’ll end up with really nice fruit and loads more plants!!!
Ricardo Haßelbeck Hahahah no worries I love to help! It’s so exciting I love it so much and I’m glad you enjoy it too😆 have an even better day! Thank you
I put grass clipping around my strawberry plants, as it helps keep the soil we after watering & keeps the strawberries off the dirt and prevents them from molding. Can also use straw or hay of available. My first year of strawberries & we are enjoying eating them.
does water on pepper plants also create mold, on the ends appearing like end rot? the plants were doing wonderful until my mother started watering. she doesn't water near the roots but showers the entire plant every time
This was very helpful, thank you! I just planted bare roots this year and am trying to do my best to take good care of them from the get-go. We’ve gotten a lot of Berries so far this first season, but I didn’t realize I needed to Clip the runners. SO, now I’ve got my work cut out for me lol 🍓

It's best to disconnect the runners once they have formed their own roots and plant them in their own space. This allows your original plant to put all of its energy into bearing fruit.
Hey, @4:10 when he said that he stuck them in pots....would he do that while it is still attached to the main stock or did he cut them off and put it in the pot?

+Diet Pie Diaries have done that in my own yard - one side to a new garden sight. Then planted, I put hay over them until spring an d then took the straw off and fertilized w compost.

Very informative, thanks. So if you are growing them in a a pot, you do not want more then one single plant every 10-12 inches then, right? Is it ok to divide them up in summer time? Thanks
The varieties of strawberries I grow produce ample strawberries in the first year. That includes Florida Brilliance and Medallion. I pinch off the runners and just the first five or six flowers but then I lead them to produce. Waiting a whole year seems too long as the root systems are not that huge.

I have my own row of strawberries from planted runners and I tried that sadly, it doesn't work because it needs the energy of the Mother Plant. They must root at least a few inches to be transplanted somewhere else to not get severe transplant shock. Hope that helped 😊
Not so true . Most plants you cut a piece straight off and plant directly into the soil but not with strawberries they need the energy, nutrients and hormones from the mother plant to set roots. once it has set roots then you can cut it away from the mother plant. I think you will be lucky if the runners roots if you just cut them off the mother plant with no roots and lay them on the ground or in pots
I just got plants and planted them at 2 weeks later.... Cold lasted too long. Now I have a lot of little white strawberries and some the leaves are turning brown n some of edges

I got 3 plants I grew from seeds this is still their first year and they already begun to flower. Do I cut the runners and flowers or can I position the runners to grow around their parents since I want more plants. Also I live in Florida so I don't know if that's a factor or anything.
I'm not sure about strawberries but often fruit grown from seed tastes very different from the original fruit. You might want to keep flowers this year to make sure your plants actually bare tasty berries. And sure, grow runners if you want.
I'm just letting my mother plant produce whatever it wants to produce. Strawberries, runners. But ok, I do get the message, will take better care of the new plants 😜
Have you ever just left them in the first year and not pinched the flowers to see the difference in yeild in the second year between the pinched plants and non pinched plants.
Where i live is sunny all year round and we dont have seasons like winter and fall and stuff so will my strawberry plants develop a god root system even if i dont cut the runners ?
Idk if you know but I'll ask anyways. Me and a friend have been gardening for going on three years now and are strawberries are wild we always just leave them alone and have tiny tiny strawberries. Do you think it's too late to be able to establish a good root system or do u think they have one already I just wasn't cutting runners. Thank you for the video I enjoyed it and learned something new to apply to my growing passion of gardening
Usually if you have tiny strawberries in my experience is that you can ALWAYS cut off runners. They already have a good root system Ciria but, they are are away a lot of energy from the plants. Resulting in small strawberries. Hope that helped!
Sourcing strawberry seeds or plants is next to impossible in Jamaica. I was lucky enough to buy a fairly healthy plant recently. As a result I can hardly wait for runners to come up.
I guess this is suitable for cold areas where you have short growing season. Where I live, the 1st year strawberry plants are strong enough to produce best fruits. After the fruiting season the plants are focused on sending out runners for producing new plants. The 2nd year plants are too bushy, not airy for the leaves, and do not bloom and fruit well.
I don't understand the part about not watering them anymore. I get that mold forms but how does the plant survive and thrive with no water? How long do you make them thristy?
I was diligent in cutting all the flowers and runners the first year and this spring my strawberries look amazingly healthy. I cant wait. Khub sundor pilant tips valo laglo
A good tip when growing strawberries, is to put straw down when the strawberries start forming to stop them touching the soil
Should mulch be applied during the hot summer days in the tropics?
Debbie Excell you can do but I would still lay some straw over the mulch where your strawberries will rest, the mulch is damp and can cause the fruit to rot. You can substitute the straw for anything that will protect your fruit from the floor but still provide some air circulation.
Thank you, makes sense!!
I didn't have straw so I used my brown leaves from tree, u think th as I fine?

so for the winter I just cover them with straw?
Do you continue to clip runners on the 2-3 year plants?
No but if there's a bunch of runners yes because it will be no energy for the bigger runners and the runners will be weak

I'm just letting my mother plant produce whatever it wants to produce. Strawberries, runners. But ok, I do get the message, will take better care of the new plants 😜
do 6ou think strawberries can grow in the caribbean i wawato start growing it I broufht one plant I saw real expensive
No mulch?
Have you ever just left them in the first year and not pinched the flowers to see the difference in yeild in the second year between the pinched plants and non pinched plants.
I've done this and it really doesn't seem to make much difference to me.
Good on Ya mate... its just what I was told by an old friend with with a green thumb. Keep it green.
Where i live is sunny all year round and we dont have seasons like winter and fall and stuff so will my strawberry plants develop a god root system even if i dont cut the runners ?
What do you do when winter comes around
+thai nguyen Dig them back up and put them in your bedroom so they don't get lonely then plant them in the spring.
+thai nguyen cover them with 6 to 12 inches of straw or pine needles... Or leaves...
You have a wild variety that is naturally small fruit.
Why do not u add a mulch so the fruit will not touch the ground
They die off in the cold months then come back still counts as “second year” and “third year” right ?
That's what i wanna know
Yes
cut them off or root them quick in a plant pot when you have to many, plant them around so people who find them can eat
Sourcing strawberry seeds or plants is next to impossible in Jamaica. I was lucky enough to buy a fairly healthy plant recently. As a result I can hardly wait for runners to come up.
Thank you, great info!
I'm sorry, byt they look so bad. Stay tuned for my channel and I will show you some that are absolutely massive!!!!!!!!
Great video pal cheers
You can use dry straws to safe strawberry
always first Friday of the mo.
Amazing tips, thank you!
Runners can be propagated in water and NEW plants,
I don't understand the part about not watering them anymore. I get that mold forms but how does the plant survive and thrive with no water? How long do you make them thristy?
You just have to harvest the strawberries and then water them ,harvest the red one
