  • How To Plant Strawberry Runners! Strawberry mother plants send out runners as a reproductive strategy. These runners are akin to a tomato sucker and are a vegetative offshoot of the main plant that's trying to become a plant on its own. This is great and a fantastic way to expand your Strawberry patch for free! Propagating Strawberries from runners is the single easiest way to multiply a Strawberry population.
    In this video I show you how I plant my Strawberry runners for maximum growth and success so that we can get new fruiting Strawberry mother plants within a single growing growing season! The only thing that beats free Strawberry plants is free Strawberry plants that start producing right away!

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms I've got a question about this. If they don't produce well after 5 years, what's the best thing to do?
      Are the runners from a 5 year old plant that's in decline, not going to produce much fruit the same way the parent plant does? Or is that 5 year decline sort of reset after the runner is rooted and an individual plant in its own right?
      Cheers, I didn't know that you need to be aware of the age of your strawberry plants 😮👍

This year, I bought a plant, and two weeks ago, planted the runners using YOUR method. 4 runners planted. The mother plant is still doing great and starting to produce strawberries, and the 4 runners planted are also doing great and growing as healthy young strawberry plants. Many thanks for this video and its information.

    I am in zone 8 and I grow everbearing strawberries in mounded rows in raised beds, the mounded rows are about 12 inches apart. when the runners start growing I put the runners in 4" pots filled with homemade potting mix and secure the runner with a fence staple until it forms roots, when roots have formed I collect the potted runners and put them in trays and prior to first frost date move the trays into my greenhouse and I usually have some berries in late February or early March. In spring I plant the berry plants back in my berry patch to replace older plants and sell what I don't need. as of today 8-25-21 I have about 180 runners in pots ready to go in the greenhouse for winter. I also grow new plants in pots from seed, very easy to do. I have not tried the water rooting method but will try that soon.

    Love your videos and how you easily explain the steps!! Question.. when propagating strawberry runners and putting them in water to grow roots, how long do they stay in the water? Do I change the water during this process? Thanks for your help!😁

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Stacey, they produce the roots in about a week. Its quick. No need for a water change because nothing is rotting to make the water go funky. You don't need the water step...I like to do it because often I don't have the time to pot up on the same day I take the runners! :-)

    Once the runner has established its roots in the 4 inch pot, can they be over wintered in the same pot or do they need to be potted on into something bigger?

      Oh, I do have a question though. Do you just keep those runners in pots until next year? I live in the subtropics. This year I just planted the runners straight into the ground and kept them there, but I’d rather use the space if I can just keep them in pots

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      @@cheryl_jones It depends on the time of year that I take them. Early enough for them to grow all summer, for sure they can go in the ground. If I collect them late summer, then they go into pots and come indoors or into the greenhouse for the following year. :-)

    Well hello Mr. Farms! I had already watched a few strawberry vids when yours popped up. I see your stuff as Strawberry 102. Answered my questions! Except one. What's the ballpark from potting to ready to plant?
    I live in the sunny south. About 40 years ago when I first got started with my garden I planted strawberries. It was a disaster. Ha. Never tried it again. I have learned a few things since. So, I figgered.... Got 20 sunny south plants coming in soon to go into a 60 foot row. The matter of propagation was on my mind. Since I'll be growing with a kraft paper cover (to start) with a goodly straw topper....punch the paper and stuff the runner in the dirt and let nature take its course or.... So next I postulated potting....and your video came up and answered every question ('ceptin for the one) that I had. This is mos def the way I'll go now. I'll jes help the little boogers along some. I don't mind. Upvote big time. Subscribed as well! I thankee!

    We do over 1000 runners a year in pots... sorta. We used those1inch seed starter "pods". We get them free and cut them up. We just hang them from the plant affixed to the runner.
