    I'm trying to find out how to keep my wild blackberries pruned and when to prune them. But a couple of channels has stated you should remove the dead floral canes and get them as far away from the plants as possible because that dead vegetation attracts some kind of boring beetles and once you get those you really can't get rid of them.

    I like the idea that you use thorny branch to protect your strawberries! I used chest nutshells ( hairy outer shell, thorny too) to cover mice holes when I was young !it worked well!😄

    We have Brambles that grow wild all over the UK. I just pulled one out the ground with the roots and re-potted it a couple days ago! I think its such a good idea because its a free fruit plant/bush and they will be extremely hardy to your environment. Mine hasn't died yet so we'll wait and see for the results!

    Afaik blackberry canes fruit the second year, so you should only trim the canes in the fall (or after harvest) and only those ones which fruited, the canes that came out this year will fruit next year hence they should only be pruned next year after the harvest.

      You can dead head them so it double the fruiting canes next year!

      Ditto on 2nd year canes. But you should definitely prune1st year canes in late fall or early spring. Thin 4-6 per plant. Very important to tip prune back to 2-4'. This controls the height, but more importantly it forces the cane to slow down upright growth and put out strong, healthy lateral shoots. THAT is where the fruit will grow. Otherwise you will get tall, gangly canes with very little fruit.

    How did you transfer them? You can't buy wild blackberry canes. I pick them wild myself. The redness shows acidity. Then they go black, they are sweet.

    I have hundreds around my property in TN and I've never seen any berries. I think because of the birds. But they're basically sporadic but I used to watch them on our land in VA but they were in the woods instead of out in the open in the yard.

    Main plant and root ball grow the 1st year.
    Primocane sprouts and grows the second year.
    Floricane produces fruit the 3rd year, from that point forward, primocanes become floricanes year after year. Floricanes need to be removed once they have completely produced for the season because they will never produce again…

    • @FisherCatProductions
      @FisherCatProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For maximum health and fruit is is important to trim back primocanes late winter or early spring to 2-4'. This controls height, but most importantly forces the cane to put out healthy, vigorous laterals which is what will produce fruit. Otherwise you get long, leggy canes with short laterals and fewer fruits.

      @@FisherCatProductions I am the only one taking care of some wild blackberry bushes growing on some middle school property. I have arthritis but spend one hour usually cutting dead branches after I take my morning walk. I have been doing this for three years now. I must be doing something right because there are plenty of berries. Nobody waters them so I do not know how they keep producing. I live in WA state.
