I root runners into bio-degradable peat pots for thirty days. Then sever them from the mother plant and plant them where I want them. With this method there’s no root disturbance and the pot decomposes away over winter.

Thanks for the response Kris Oluich. I started 3 Allstar strawberry plants in a wicking 5 gallon bucket. They produced runners and all rooted in the soil underneath. There starting to bloom. I was going to dig them up and transplant in 5 gallon wicking buckets but sure what to do.

I root my runners in cups of compost then clip them off after they get rooted solid. And then transplant. From 6 plants I got about 100 daughter plants! Sold some, planted some, gave some away, threw the weak ones in the compost bin and I still have a lot left over.

Last year I cut the bottom off solo cups to make a little collar for my strawberry plants so they’re not drooping down for the slugs to eat and they took off like crazy. I have a huge Rubbermaid tote full of runners I need to get in the ground elsewhere now. It was super easy to see which were the original plants too because they had red solo cup collars lol.

Lots of methods for sure. I catch the runners thru the season in pots with soil, cut off from the mother plant when roots are good, and then plant the potted runner a bit later in a better spot in the patch. Good survival if properly watered. My patch started out 3 years ago and it produced until the frost this year. Best fruit ever.

If short on plants/runners, or to simply increase success rate, allow the runner to root before clipping it. One can place a small pot of soil under each runner and allow the runner to root in the pot before clipping it off the mother plant.

The Method I choose is, "Don't mess with them". I let the runners go. I just toss them back into the bed if they grow out of it, but other than that don't mess with them. What I've noticed The "umbilical" between the mother and runner will eventually die and you have 2 plants.

I have a rotation system with 3 beds (Junebearing). I trim off all the runners in bed 1 until after harvest time, then allow enough runners to root into pots to plant a 2nd bed. The next year I trim all of the runners in the 1st bed all season, and repeat the rooting process in the 2nd bed. creating a 3rd bed. In the 3rd year I trim all runners, and after harvest remove the plants from the first bed and renew the bed for a different crop next year. (I really should put in a cover crop at this point. Gotta try that). This works well if you want a lot of berries and you have room. Thank you for all the work you've put into these videos over the years.

They produce runners 2x pr season in my experience. I cut away all runners intensively from spring until they are done producing fruit. Then give firtalizer and allow them to produce runners until the end of August. I take all runners, make sure there is appropriate ground cover around the plants and leave them be. I keep pruning away runners from this point on until they gear down for winter ❤
My plants produce a very large amount of berries pr plant ~ keep in mind that runners will take 1 full year to be mature enough to produce proper fruit. During that year, they should not be allowed to flower or produce runners. They need to focus on growing their roots and a bigger crown 🙂
Edit: I also firtalize in spring.

How much rain do you get a year? I couldn't fathom growing strawberries in the ground where I live. I've never seen one that liked water. I had to make a greenhouse and hang mine in peat/perlite mix

I started strawberries this year.; they are beautiful. Picked the blooms as I have been instructed. Now I have runners and are propagating them. I will not pick their flowers. So what am I missing here? I want to eat some strawberries!

Is there a way to tell how old a plant is? I bought a plant at Home Depot in pot. Is it more likely it’s a runner that grown?

I planted new baby strawberries and they seem to be droopy? I plucked the flowers off to give more energy and produce more leaves . Will they start to Bush if I keep trimming off the flowers ??

looks like you planted the crown below soil level, it should be above?

Agreed. Looks like they were planted way too deep

ALWAYS plant strawberries with crowns LEVEL/SLIGHTLY ABOVE soil planting level.
Use a paper clip to root runner plants into coffee cups (Costa type cups) and clip off when the LAST runner plant roots (straighten clip out, then bound into a “u”S happens in the middle....
Get rid of parent plants in 3rd year and just replace with rooted runners, as main plant deteriorates after this timescale.

So I was right to after so long with seasons changing to go ahead and cut most of the runners now forming their own plants. Any advice when some leaves start to dry out on the original plant what that's caused by.

Its mid July 2019 in Salinas California the Salad Bowl Capital of the World... we grow tons of strawberries near this area. My strawberries at home are producing runners well before winter I placed small potting beds near the runners and allow them to establish roots then trim them cords off... In this area zone 9b winters are mild the problem Im having is its July and the mother plants are producing smaller strawberries right now because the runners are growing but thats ok for me... Next year ill have more plants And hopefully the strawberries arent that small

I often take unrooted runners and put them in water until they form roots. I give away hundreds of baby plants every year from a patch of about 25 main plants. I bounce between all of the methods he went over, just depends how I'm feeling that year 🤷🏻‍♀️

Can I just clip the rooted runner and leave it in place? I want to cover some soil around the original plant. It's Octobere here, zone 6b. Is it ok to do it now?

Hi thanks for your video. I've got some crazy runners with dead leaves. It's actually the middle of winter now almost spring. should I still follow the above method if there's flowers and the start of fruit showing? Should I also be cropping the dead leaves?

Only got me more confused. Why would you not just continues to take off runners when they start to root & increase the number of pots growing, as I have just started to do. Bought some bare roots last Spring, so I am just replanting runners this first season, doubled my initial number of containers, so....will I get berries on all these plants next year?

What's the best way to get started in growing strawberries? From a plant? Seed? I want to get started but don't know where to start. I'm in Kansas btw, which is zone 6b from what I've found online. I would most likely be growing them in containers. Also, are there any varieties that would do better in my zone over others? I could bring them inside during cold weather as I have plenty of space indoors.

Hello, thank you for the video, I was hoping if you could give me some advice please or see if Im doing the right thing. I purchased a small strawberry plant from the store and it already had 2 runners on it. I was watering the plant twice a week, but I had the plant indoors. I soon realised that the runners became dry and dead like. So I cut them. I repotted the plant in new soil and gave it more space to grow and put the plant directly outside. Im in Louisiana and this time of the year it starts to get abit more hot. The leaves on the plant have been getting bigger and ive been watering whenever the soil dries up. Is there anything I can do to make sure the plant survives long term and produces fruit?

I’m in zone 9 central Florida and wondering if I can removed the runners and replant them anytime in the mild weather just not in the Summer when they are dormant. Would this be correct?

Curious I am wondering where new crowns are harvested from are those just part of the runners process? Because I bought crowns and there working great but curious on if I can harvest my own crowns instead of buying them ?

I was wondering about when is the last time they need to be watered or how long can they go without being watered over the winter if I am covering them for the winter from the frost. I am in Western Slope of CO.
