This was a Hail Mary attempt for me. All the usual tricks failed, I was about ready to sand down and start over. So glad I saw this first! It worked! At first I thought it hadn’t, but maybe ten minutes after the water dried the paint was no longer tacky. This was the exact top coat I used too.
My dad taught me this trick years ago painting a cube van. He actually ran the garden hose over it several times in the evening after to harden it and make sure we didn't damage it assembling the trim the next day. Thanks for the reminder because I had completely forgotten.
I was looking for ways to help my tacky paint situation and came across two solutions. Water and powder. I opted with the water method first, since it'll produce less mess. This did help, but not fully. So for me, it worked partially and will try this method again in future projects where the paint ends up tacky. Thanks for the tip! Now I know how to solve this issue if it comes up again.
That’s sooo smart. That’s the same process with water base paint it dries by the water evaporating within the paint. So you put water on and it’s doing the same process
I used the exact Enamel brand he showed in the video on some metal exterior light fixtures. They were still tacky 2 days later. I tried this water hack and IT ACTUALLY WORKED! I’m not sure it would work on non enamel paints, but it definitely works on ENAMEL. Thank you!!!
Hello, just a suggestion but this worked for me - if you live somewhere that has dry heat or drier winters than spray painting some surfaces like metal will remain tacky. As you will have noticed he said ‘humidity’ at the end of video. You can do 2 things - 1, if you have a steamer that spurts out steam then quickly go over your item with the steamer (dont Saturate it and also don’t get so close like you would with cleaning w/ steam - you just want the steam to cover your piece. OR 2, if your steamer is a POS like mine then just drag whatever you need to have hot humidity in it into your bathroom while you have a shower (note make sure to close your windows and turn exhaust fan off, remove as soon as you finish shower so it’s not soaking wet or pooling water) Hope this helps!
OK, weirdly, this really works! It’s so counterintuitive. I had some shelves drying in my plant room with the humidifier off. In the south-facing sunny window on a warm day. And then more days. Still sticky! Turned humidifier on and sticky was gone in a few hours. Thanks so much! I’m going to check out some of your other videos.
Wow! I don't know how this works but it works almost immediately!! I was super nervous after spray painting my kitchen chairs (Rust-Oleum satin black protective enamel) and them being tacky after 5 hours thinking I'd have to undo everything or be stuck with a mess. This is literally saving my @$$!!
I use rust oleum to pain model rockets and absolutely pleased with rust oleum 2x. But I got a free can from work that is called rust oleum universal and it looks like it might be a little old. But I used it and it feels tacky after a couple days. I might try this with a damp cloth if it ain’t right in the next few days.
hey dennis, been a week, spraying with water several times a day, inside, since 109 degrees outside. had used the rust-oleum 2x clear satin spray. still tacky. do you have another suggestion or do i just keep on, keeping on. tks. much. linda
How much water? Do you soak in water? Do you light spray? Do you mist spray? Do you do it within an hour? Do you wait 24 hours? How do you know if the spray paint will take water it won't take off the paint?
Thank you. You just literally saved my giant Christmas bulb I sprayed yesterday! Still not dry! Going to spray water on it and see how that goes next 😅
@@crystalformangerI'm trying both right now. 70°f room, fan, sprayed water. If interested reply back and I'll post an update to your comment tomorrow! Update 2hours later and hardened to safely touch! I'm leaving it with the fan on it overnight just to be safe bc it's a chair and I don't want to sit on it prematurely.
prepped a old metal bank with a brass wire brush. Cleaned bank with 91% alcohol, let dry and painted with rust-oleum American accents 2x ultra cover paint + primer in satin canyon black. Been 3 days now. Still not completely dry, even after water trick. Not going to buy anymore of this paint.
For those of you with Halloween masks that won't dry use any kind of powder and be generous coating all sides. It'll get absorbed. Idk what this "water" bs is.

This guy is spot on! I did exactly what he said and the results were perfect. Thank you for the tip!!!!

Definitely going to try this!
I have a project drying in the basement and it's been giving me a headache. Thanks for the tip man!!

It's not a hack, it's just a tip. Suddenly people latched on to the trend of call everything a hack and it's dumb.

Who knew! Thank you. I used acrylic varnish on some art boxes that just won't stop being sticky. I will try this.
what is the result?
Hey brother, great to see you again. Awesome tip, I never knew this
you too! been out of the loop for a while, trying to get back in it
Thank you so much, sir. I painted my bed the other day, and I was so frustrated as the paint was coming out. This tip is really helpful.
You sir just earned a new follower lol never heard this🤯
I just added some water to some hand painted Ikea cabinets that are still tacky after over a week of drying, so hopefully this tip works for that too
Did it work? I'm having this problem with my stairs except it has only been a day, but it is stairs so I kind of need to use them.
Not really, I ended up just putting a spray clear coat on it and it was dry in like 20 minutes@@kraziecatclady
@@LepsLairthank you for following up! I’m sorry the water trick didn’t work in this situation but am really glad to hear the clear coat did.
Help! Do you just leave the water on or dry it off?
@@maryfitzsimons715right some instructions after applying would be nice? like i want to run a fan to helo but should i??

Dude! You may have just saved the day!
Thank you! Saved my patio furniture!!!
It works!!!
Thank you so much 👍👍👍I almost went crazy
useful tip but maybe show us how you sprayed the water and what you used!
My doors are still tacky after spraying water
What? It's water in a spray bottle. Pretty basic.
Thank you so much. This was so helpfull😭
Great Idea this paint always drives me nuts every time I used...Thanks
So puzzling! Used that spray paint on metal brackets and they’re so tacky! Just sprayed water on them and hope it works
Did it work?
Ive done everything you said. It's still just as tacky as BEFORE
Thanks a lot!
I love this
Wow this solves some problems.
How did you work this out?
Thanks 🙏
So just spray it and let it sit in doors? Or is it better to leave it outside / in heat. Got some sticky paint but it’s pretty humid out.
Thank you!!!.
Man. Thank you.
thanks!!

My paint on Kryson paint is still tacky after four days. Will this work for it as well? Thanks.
Does this trick work on hand painted oil based paint?

Will that work on fabric paint?
tried it on some rattle can clear thats still tacky 3 days later, put water on it and it didnt do anything at all
Thaaaaaaank Yooooouuu!!

You are the fucking king!
That’s crazy !
If spray paint is tacky use a fan on it till it dries. Always use a fan on oil based especially.
Have you tried his trick on oil based spray paint too? Or just the fan?

But you did touch it
Is this acrylic paint?
The can he held up said Enamel, so it’s not acrylic. Enamel is oil based and is notorious for taking a long time to dry.
Doesnt work for polymer
So do you spray water then let it air dry or blow dry?
we need answers!
Honestly... Im shocked that this worked... But it did. My mind is blown.
Same! I sprayed water and left a fan blowing on it in a 70°f room and 4hoira later it has hardened to touch safely! *Phew!!*
What if I painted my rifle with it 😂
Spray some water on it it wont hurt your rifle bro😂, im going through the same issue btw
witchcraft! Or science...either way, success!
Thats a wtf
I'm sorry but no this did not work when spraying water on
Didn't work on the hood of my car just let permanent waterspots
Dayum
Doesn't work
Trying this rn
how was it???
It worked great just wait overnight or it will mess it up
Did you leave the water overnight? I tried it and it worked but when I tried to take it off it was still a little sticky
Just be patient and it will work
@@AndreaGodineslet a fan naturally blow it dry. Don't wipe it off!
Am I being tricked?
Nope! I was reluctant too but I'm shocked how well it worked. 70°f room, fan, water spritzing. Hardening significantly in 2hrs!

I think that’s the difference between tacky spray paint on latex vs on plastics. I’m here for a halloween prop too ❤
I used a couple coats of baby powder and dusted it off over to course off a week and it's finally dried up. Dust it on. Dust it off.
yeah that does NOT work. thanks for absolutely nothing
tl;dr Spray water on it.
