- Classic Game Room HD reviews the MODEL SCPH-79001 PLAYSTATION 2, the PS2 slim! This slimmer, thinner, lighter, smaller PS2 has everything that you need to play the bulk of Playstation 2 and PSone video games. Two controller ports, two memory card slots, backwards compatibility with PS1 and awesome value for the money. The SCPH 79001 Playstation 2 is just like its older, bigger sibling, the original PS2, but less than half the size. CGR likes the build quality, quiet running and space saving size of the PS2 Slim model SCPH-79001, even though the design of the PS2 Model SCPH-90000 is slightly refined.
Hard to believe they only stopped making these 3 Years ago
What
No, the scph-90001 came out in the USA and ceased production in 2013
I hope they release the slims again as a anniversary thing would be cool... the sealed new ps2s now are worth big money
I regret not buying one of these new in box several years ago. My original fat ps2 from 2001 is hanging in there but I know it's only a matter of time before it breaks.
Axel Alexzander mine still runs great well proubly because i didn't heavily use it i used my original xbox for the multiplats
Backward compatibility with PS1 games is what made the Playstation 2 such a strong seller. You could go ahead and get one even if you weren't interested in the launch titles and play the PS1 games while waiting for PS2 games you wanted to play later on.
john tracy funny how things change
Not to mention Use it as A DVD player I love my PS2 plays PS2 PS1 and DVDs CDS imo the best PlayStation ever and many can say the sales and 14 year life span speaks for itself.
The Ps1 compatibility and the fact that it was also a dvd and cd player , but I think so many units were sold because they were known to be defective especially in the early fats , and many of the sales were replacements for broken consoles !
@@Victoria3232-j7o In its day it was cheaper than any other dvd player btw... No wonder it sold like a million in its first day
looks like the Ps2 went on a diet. I remember having a ps2 slim. so many good memories!!!
After my PS2 slim broke, I used it as a coaster. And what a damn good coaster that was.
i dunno why but i love the fat model, damn, it is pretty!
***** not rare at all lol, i have one under my bed.
MrAmir not rare indeed, the only problem is the price, where i live it costs around 200 dollars, thats ridiculous..
You can pick up the fat model with like 10 games for 20 bucks on eBay lol
dawood rashid yeah, and to get to brazil, it will get taxed, to like 300 dollars... thats ridiculous..
Wtf that is ridiculous.
This is still a awesome system, plays ps1 and ps2 games and it's still a DVD player. The ps2 was way ahead of its time. I used to play MGS 2 and time splitters with my friend. Me and my family would also rent the lost TV show and watch it on the ps2 in our living room. We ended up owning like 3. Great memories
The PS2 Slim consoles can mount screw-on 8-inch LCD screens and this turns them into a mobile console you can bring to places with power outlets.
Never knew that
I know the gamecube had a screen you could buy for it and I just learned the slim ps1 (psone) lol had one too
Uh yeah Except mobile consoles are defined by not needing power outlets
The PS2 Slim is better. I admit i use to like the original fat PS2 because of the big fan in the back (making it not hot at all) but the PS2 Slim fan works just as good. I know because i played the slim for 4 hours straight & the console did not overheat or get hot that much. Plus it's small not taking up a lot of space. So now i change my mind being that PS2 slim is much better. I still play mines to this day. I have more fun playing the old school games as i do to this new era. Old School>New School.
XAVIER1992 Right gaming has fall downhill
Trane Crowley it surely has. Even the video game industry is not EXCITING/FUN like it used to be back in the 90s/early 2000s. Gaming these days require you to have internet to do just about anything (DLC) which is bizarre. Back then games were already complete/finished and you didn't have to buy extra characters. You unlocked them when you beat the games. Yup the video game industry has gone down hill tremendously & that's why I stay playing my SEGA Genesis, PS2, & Dreamcast.
I have a PS2 (Fat) and bought it in 2002, AND IT STILL FREAKING WORKS 😄
There are more models of PS2 Slim then what he said in the video.
SCPH-7000x
SCPH-7500x
SCPH-7700x
SCPH-7900x
SCPH-9000x
X is just region number, this list is ordered from older to newer so the newer ones are more reliable.
Just bought a brand new slim model. its gnarly
Just got Shadow of Colossus and Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Only have those two games at the moment for the system. Ill look for that one though thanks
I got it like 3 days ago, and my friend gave me some R&C games and some other awesome ones. Hes trying to get rid of them BTW.
Elliott Knighves Is it the 90001 model?
+referral madness agua Rafa
I got a fat PAL PS2 from '02. Still works today. It's actually quite reliable.
It's 2018. I still play PS2
Until 2019 still owning the PS2 slim and playing it
I miss that power switch. Nowadays I have to go and pull the power cable off my ps3 if I want it to actually turn the console off.
You can hold the playstation button in the middle of the controller. There you can choose to shut it off.
Got the silver model but the black one really looks great ...
Same
Me too
At one
The silver model looks great as well, I prefer it slightly over black.
@@amodsinyan.2151 And me.
I just got a slim! Its definitely a lot more convenient then the original model!
@Rider450 nope but it's more reliable.
Past:
Bring friend over house and turn on the PlayStation 2. Put in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and play for the whole night.
Present:
Go home alone, turn on PlayStation 3 and Insert an average Call of Duty game.
Play for 1-2 hours, get bored and go to sleep.
Nostalgia
Ps2 slim: are u my da-
Ps2 fat: NO IM NOT YOUR DAD!
Watching his videos makes me regret sending my old video gaming stuff to people.
Where can I get this new in the UK?
Now on ebay!
iv had my ps2 slim for 7 years and it's still working
2018 anyone???!!!??
I have still the old original FAT playstation 2, has been running for 10 years and keeps on going
3:07 why did you keep the memory card inside the slim? It adds to the weight
I got the SCPH-90004 model, the latest of the slim ps2 consoles, it's just great. Even the design is a bit different, and it even has an internal power supply allowing you to use the same power cable as the fat ps2 :) I bought mine in 2012, brand new, and chipped (hardmodded), allowing me to just download and burn ps2 games and play them without any problem. It still works perfectly to this day. I just love it.
I sold my older ps2 in 2008, but I'm never selling this one!
there is nothing wrong with the fatty ps2 just clean the lens carefully 2 times a year and its just as good as the day u bought it
I absolutely agree. I'm still using mine to this day - and it works no problemo.
i have had mine for about 18 years and it works like new!!! i totally agree!
The problem is that it's harder because you kinda have to take apart the ps2 alittle
Doesn't matter I'm pretty much a technician xD
hidde kooistra or flip the ps2 upside down
my original ps2 still works like a dream ☺
Ps2 + HDMI = Better than Ps4.
Hell no
Ps2 is more fun than the ps4, that's for damn sure.
Alexander Edwards true
ChristianGamer 64 ps2 is still my favorite PlayStation no other PlayStation will top the ps2
how do you get HDMI out of the ps2?
Ahh, 8 years since these came out... and now we can look back in retrospect and realise the slimline ones were disc-destroying monsters that left huge, circular gouges in the DVDs and weren't that much more reliable than the original. Heck, I tried putting a disc in once which literally snapped in the centre because of the stupid peg you're supposed to clip a disc into.
This question goes to everyone, which model PS2 do you like more, the Fat model or Slim model "if you answer you need a specific reason"
I love the fat model, I have had 2 slims and from my memories if you dropped it once it makes a ticking noise and sometimes doesn't read the disc, also i like bigger consoles because it makes it feel more durable
I went through 4 slims 1 the laser only read ps2 games and nothing else, 2 the power button broke, 3 the lazer tries to read the game but doesn't, 4 works fine.
FAT one, stronger, HD support no heat problems
I like the fat better just cause it's the original and I like the disc tray feAture and at the time when Id have to hide me weed and stuff the expansion bay is a great hiding spot
No problem
Bought my Playstation 2 slim on Christmas 2004. Still works fine. Have an Xbox 360 Elite and even tough I don't play much, it died this week with the ring of death... and I only had it for 6 years. Seems like the newer and more advanced are the consoles, the more problems they have.
I had my PS3 for 8 years now, bought it used, it still works like a champ.
One Question:
How the heck is it possible to have an internal power supply that small in the Japanese PS2?!
Nano machines son
Because...
(Spoiler Alert)
LOGIC.
It's because it was a newer model than the 78000-ish model Mark reviewed in this video, so obviously they could shrink down the parts enough to internally fit the battery.
SilverGenerations Studios Err japanese engineering
The japanese won't buy stuff if it's not tiny enough for their tight apartments.
Due to this demand for compact design, everything in japan is smaller.
The PS2 slim was my first console ever, got it for Christmas in 2004. Man was it an awesome console. So many good memories :')
it`s so big lol
Thank you mr Russia.
On my 3rd Xbox 360 here, still have my 1rst PSTwo still works like a charm
Mine still reads discs, it's just hit or miss with it. Sometimes it reads it right away, sometimes ya gotta turn it on and off until it works
Same here :(
Avinash Singh They basically become the n64, just gotta fuck with it till it works.
***** Mine is really old, it's the fat ps2 and i've had it probably since 2001 or so, so the laser being weird makes a lot of sense.
Mine was like that for a few years, now it's dead for good
The later phats are the most reliable btw.
i have in last 10 years had 3 PS2 yes 3 of them, the first was a PS2Slim, that was great we could take it with us and so on.
Then my mom got a new boyfriend i 2007, and he had the first ps2, he bought it in 2002/3, and it is that ps2 i use now.
Then our PS2 slim start not to read disc, so we when out and bought a used one, and it was a first model ps2, and it worked, all the games we could not take on the Slim we could now use them Again. and that PS2 has my Brother, he also has a PS1, and PS3.
And i Have a PS!, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS4, Gamecube, Wii, and an Xbox.
My ps2 is 6 years old and it still works like a boss
Big PS2 with a laser replacement is better than a slim.
Its hard to believed PS2 is still in production.
Still prefer the fat model because you can always use the HDD and just forget about the optical discs.
I found my disc tray version today after 8 years collecting dust. Opened it, cleaned the disc reading laser. Put it back together and im playing it like it is new!
You love top loaders, don't you Mark?
The PS2/XBox/GCN generation was the last generation to be built to last
Does anyone remember accidentally yanking the controller and pull the the ps off of like your dresser or stand and almost crying
Justin Clatterbuck me.
I never used the stand. I just set it on what you guys would call "The Side" of the unit, as my PS2 systems were bought used and did not come with said stand.
many times. somehow my fat ps2 still works.
Nah. and then later I got two Logitech Cordless Action controllers, officially licensed. Rumble, more comfortable, AND 50 hours of battery life on two AAs. Good times.
They also worked on PS1 but you would have to switch controllers every time you wanted to save, because the controller plug-in blocked the memory card port on the PS1. The only way around this was games like Spyro that supported the second card slot.
what the ps2 has given to the gaming community can be difficult to replicate or even overcome... My Playstation 2 will always be loved and will be part of my Past and FUTURE,... still running till know.. and still playing with it..
PS2 > Xbox > GameCube > Dreamcast
Xbox > Ps2 > Gamecube > Dreamcast
At least for me.
***** It's called an opinion, Mr. Smart-Ass.
PSOne>GameCube>PS4>Wii U
@Aaron Thenimas
#triggered
Dreamcast library is awful compared to the other consoles that gen. Easily the worst. Of course that is because it got discontinued early, but that doesn't make it any less worse.
ive had my ps2 slim for 8 years and it works like a new one
I prefer the original. Ive a 250 gb hard drive with tons of games. They load faster as well
Does its library of games is also bigger than the Vectrex?
Pretty tough question there.
This console is great!!!😬
i had the bulky ps2 for 13 years and it's still reading disks like the day i got it
Honestly I have seen more slims break than the fat ones.I have had a fat one for over 12 years and its still going strong.
Really..?
Depends what slim though too not all are the same, i have this model and it's been working for 12 years also and still going strong with constant play throughout all the years
I have PS2 SCPH 75004 and it still works great. PS2 ftw :3
79001... 9001...
ITS OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!
Imaan Mommandi WHAT, NINE THOUSAND!? There’s no way that can be right!
My PS1 mini is still working 13years till now, but unfortunately my PS2 original was died at 5years and now, my PS3 slim is 4years... Playstation kickass!
R.I.P PS2 original model SCPH-30001
ps2 slims are breakable lol and they get hot easily that's the downside
+justin mckenzie and the fat models eyes break down easily.
+DestroyerOfBurgersGaming (Games4thapeople) but how much do you play it?
+DestroyerOfBurgersGaming (Games4thapeople) exactly! That's probably the reason why it's still alive.
Only the 9000s do because of the internal power supply, go 7k series, preferably 7300 and newer because it plays 480i
@@Hijynx87 What eyes?
Picked up one of these this morning at the pawn shop, and I'm trying to clean it up and peel off the old stickers now. It looks like this is at least the 4th time this one was sold, and nobody ever bothered to take off the stickers before. Dirt and scratches, yeesh! Still runs perfectly. I guess it's like Grandma always said, "If you make 150 million of something, you get pretty darn good at it."
Ive had my original model PS2 for 10 years and ive never had a problem.
i wish today would be like... 1999.... the PS2 was released... ah... nostalgia...
my fat ps2 still alive since 2001 still working fine after these years
Dude, I got my PS2 Slim Silver for Christmas whenever I was 5 and it still works fine, And one of my friend's PS3 died in a year
I had my ps 2 slim 3 years but it stopped reading discs so i had retire it best console in my life time so much fun with it
R.I.P PS2
I recently got a slim ps2, mainly because I had the xbox and missed out on some titles. So I went back and got it with some great games. So my game collection has also grown. It's a great console, glad to have it.
the 7000x models look so beautiful
I have had the old playstation 2 for 6 years now and i haven't had any problems with it at all yet
Yeah it does, I have a ceramic white PS2 model 79001 and a Black one model 75001 (it has more metal shielding).
I've had a ps2 fat and only lasted 2 years. then I upgraded to the slim in 2007 and It still works
I remember we used to have a case that could fit a ps2 slim and a small tv and in the back we had all of our ps2 games and we would take it on roadtrips and play it in the car ahh the memories...
No, the Slim does have a fan. Some people have no idea what they are talking about and confuse others. It has a flat turbo like fan that lays over the cpu heatsink, and blows it out the back left of the console, right above the power input. I mod these things and take them apart regularly.
Any suggestions on where I can get one for a good price?
EBay there really cheap now
I always thought my slim ps2 was the normal one lol
I was the only person I knew without a tv in my room and with a FAT PS2 :) and I lived just fine
Everyone talks about graphics and frame rates these days yet one of the most entertaining systems ever made is the ps2.
PS2 Slim has an Infra port, so a bit larger accessory list is available to the Slim.
I have both a slim and a fat PS2. My Slim PS2's eject button broke with in a month of getting it. So now i have to put a CPU heatsink on top of the door so i can use it.
My old fat PS2 is still going strong.
I still have my fat ps2. Last I checked it couldn't play ps1 or DVDs. Anymore, but I can still run Star Wars battlefront so I'm happy.
I got lucky and managed to get a silver PS2 Slim with silver controller. It's awesome.
I still have this and it still going strong ^+^
I Love the PS2! I got this model hooked up now but I also have a spare bigger model.
we got a fat ps2 at christmas in 2002, it has fell from a hight of 3 meters, around 7 times, left in a car when it was -25 `c outside and it still going.
ps2 is one of the best consolls ever and i have never giving up on it.
its like "the dark knight" almong games consoles :p
got my own fat ps2 when i started at college. sorry for bad english, swedish :p
My PS2 still works for 10 years.
PS2 is a workhorse, it does everything that it NEEDS to. It plays PS1 and PS2 games as well as DVD! That's everything that most people need. Sure the PS3 has Blueray and online, but PS2 rocks! It's 2011 and they still sell games at Wallmart and Gamestop! LONG LIVE PLAYSTATION 2!
i have gone without a PS2 for 5 years... Missing all the great games able to play on this console. So ive bought this version today!!! woooooooooo!!
iv had my ps2 since launch and now its starting to die ;( RIP PS2 2000-2012. We had a good 12 years
Ps2 Slim lasted less longer than Fat Ps2. Although it IS bigger it lasts longer.
I remember fixing my slim model PS2 because the power button was blocking the use for the game to play. I took out the power button, and I now need to play my PS2 with the DVD remote. ( it has a power button on it )
The slim PS2 was great for being smaller, lighter, and has a much quieter fan. Plus, an 8-inch LCD screen can be clipped on to the Slim Playstation 2. I use a Joytech screen that has worked well. Bring them on vacations to watch DVDs and play PS2 favorite games, like Mr. Mosquito (wished Mr. Mosquito 2 was translated for the US market), SOCOM II, Virtua Fighter 4, Kinetica, Ghost in the Shell, Mercenaries, Onimusha, etc., making it a mobile (but externally-powered) PS2! Brilliant!
Beg to differ the 39001 was the go to console for modders. The slim ps2 was prone to overheating. And harder to mod when modding was a thing.
Got it since 04 with a bunch of games, best console i have with the snes.
I had a slim when I was a kid, and then I bought a used one a few days ago. Greatest purchase ever? I think so!
@finfer7 Actually they're less likely to break than the Fat model's disc-devouring system. Plus they're probably a bit easier to fix if they do snap off.
what, I have my old ps2 for about 10 years and it still works
The original ps2 that I’ve played regularly since the early 2000s is still running strong
@321Kewlkid yup! all you need is a ps1 memory card. most of the assesories are compatable too
I got my PS2 (Fat model) off of Amazon and it works great so I can play some awsome PS2 games.
Three things of note:
1. Get the big model if you want to play any Hard Drive compatible games, such as FFXI Online
2. The original official PS2 Multitaps are physically incompatible with the slim PS2 (I know, I've tried), but I'm sure you can pick up a used third-party model at your local game store for less than $10
3. No i.Link port on the Slim, if I'm not mistaken. Not like it was used for much other than networking for a few specific games, though.
My ps2 slim still works ive had it for 5 yrs
My fat PS2 worked with zero issues from Xmas 2003 until I sold it last year. I regret that I sold it, my biggest sell regret when it comes to video games. Internal HDD with HDLoader.... you can't beat that. I fig I could just use my PS3 for all of my PS1/2/3 games and save space... now I want my old PS2 back to take the wear and tear off of my BC PS3. Oh well, getting a PS2 slim now.
