Classic Game Room HD - PLAYSTATION DUALSHOCK 1 Controller review

- Classic Game Room HD reviews the original DUALSHOCK Controller for Sony Playstation 1. The Dualshock 1 controller is grey and classy, like a sea lion with analog controls. This welcome addition to the PS1 family in 1998 brought dual analog sticks and an awesome rumble feature to video games like Gran Turismo 1! Far superior to the original PS1 controller (which was a good controller in its own way), the PSone Dualshock controller was hefty and featured larger L2 and R2 buttons as well as the analog sticks. Further refined with the PS2 Dualshock 2 controller, the Dualshock line now continues with the PS3 Dualshock 3. So check it out, are you looking for a budget controller for PS2 games? Is the PS1 Dualshock 1 controller all that you can find? It works with Playstation 2 except it does not have analog button buttons, just analog sticks. The SCPH-1200 is reviewed here on Classic Game Room, the Playstation Dual Shock 1 Dualshock 1 controller for PS1 and PS2.
Thanks, this review really helped me chose which controller to get for sound recording. I decided on the PSOne for the higher frequency as I was going for a more tingy sound.
the reason the ps3 rumble is lighter is to save battery power since its wireless
I prefer ps3 controller over ps2 and ps1 because it's wireless and cables on ps2/ps1 just rip apart after use
*PS3 is crap!*

When people think of innovation in video games, they tend to gravitate towards Nintendo even though there are companies that have made just as significant innovations if not more significant. The Playstation and Dualshock 1 controllers are perfect examples of significant non-Nintendo innovation (revolution as well). Dual analog controllers as well as four shoulder buttons are THE standard for home consoles.
That's true, but Nintendo has innovated a lot more. Again, that is true. While the Snes set the standard for controllers, the Dualshock improved upon it
thomas garrett Debatable.
@@thomasgarrett8113 No they didn't. Dual analogues literally introduced true 3d gaming
You just have to love these controllers. They are perfect. They are right weight, very comfortable for longer periods of time and they never friggin brake! My first Dualshock for PSOne (the white one) survived a lot of falls on floor and bangs, and it still fully works!Sony knows high quality.
or at least they knew, ds4 d pad feels horrible, all same contact for all buttons, I wish they'd left rubber contacts for d pad

I still have 4 racing games for PlayStation 1 & I have gran Turismo & Gran Turismo 2 & Nascar thunder 2002 & Crash team racing with PlayStation DualShock controller for PlayStation 1
I remember breaking one of these over Gran Turismo, parents never bought me another controller after that.
i have the gran turismo 2.4.6
@@HandIeThese iplayed all of them but 4. I now have gt sport
@@playlists1168 dang my comment from 4 years ago!? oh yeah now i have played 1234 and 6
The ending of your reviews always crack me up every time XD Like, you always find a way to add some more humor to the video rather than just giving it a cold ending like most reviewers do; and that's what also adds onto the solid quality of these videos.
The first time I saw a PS1 controller, I was blown away! such a weird shape and 4 shoulder buttons, FOUR!
This video takes me back to my childhood lol
The design of the analogue ps1 controller still lives on to this day. And I hope they never change it!
Wow I remember watching this when it first came out as a kid. Life just came full circle.
mine is SCPH-110 (dualshock 1)
and MAN! best review i ever seen! i didn know that ps2 X button is sensitive to pressure... you know harder you push faster you move (gran turismo)...
and my dualshock 1 is little bit lighter, and it has the analog buttons, (L3, R3)
Lol, thanks, you fixed my ignorance with this video, after watching, I rushed up to my 'museum' and found that I have an origional, a dualshock 1 and 2 and I was not even aware :o)
I love your controller and console reviews. they are so great.
The SIXAXIS is a tilt sensor, that's what a tilt sensor does, it's the same technology behind the Wii's Nunchuck.
You could argue that Sony rushed the Sixaxis just to not look lame compared to the Wiimote, but they fixed it later by adding rumble. And they are coming out with a new motion controller as well.
I still have 3 racing games on PlayStation 1 & I have Gran Turismo & Gran Turismo 2 & Crash team racing & I used Original PlayStation DualShock controller for PlayStation 1 & I go fast in racing video games Gran Turismo & Gran Turismo 2 & crash team racing I played
I never knew the buttons on dualshock 2 are "analog" like the triggers we carry today... to go slower than usual too bad gta didn't use that feature because it would've been neat to notice it back in the day.
This is the best dualshock review i saw in mi life.
I love your musical choices
it amazes me how detailed your reviews are =D 5/5 stars
Do the Dualshock 2 analog sticks work on the PS1?
That ending is one of the best things I've ever seen
I really love PS1 Controller with DuelShock was my number 1 favorite video game controller of all-time
The Dualshock wasn't even the first analog controller for the Playstation. Their first attempt was called the Dual Analog, which had a very short production run and release. It sported longer handles and plastic, concave joysticks. I managed to find a couple a while back, but they're pretty rare and hard to find.
This controller changed my life
Oh wow, didn't expect that; thanks for explaining
When I was 3 I used to bite the analog stick rubber (I didn't know why)
+SuperLink 55 So you're the anklebiter who ruined my used controllers.
+jjsullivan5196 no i still have my ps1 my parents bought it in 1996.
I always liked the way the cables tasted......mmmmmm Plastic Rubber Flavour
SuperLink 55
Its awesome
Ryan Saeed Exactly , I also loved that rubber feeling when biting the cable
The DualShock 1 was way better than the original standard PS1 controller because the DualShock 1 had vibration features, and it had an analog button where you could turn the analog light and vibration on and off. The original standard PS1 controllers didn't have analog and they didn't have the vibration feature.
thanks, i was looking for controllers to make music with so now i know which ones to get.
Tilt sensor implies it can sense rotation, not a single direction. Single direction would make it an accelerometer. You can tilt the SIXAXIS and the game will replicate the tilt your controller is in, like in Motorstorm or Warhawk.
Bluetooth is how it connects to the console (just like the Wiimote), but the motion sensing is done by the controller's sensors, not the Bluetooth.
best.joystcks.ever.made.
end of story
That's why all the Playstation controllers I've ever had keep having their thumbsticks break in some way lol. Such quality.
Xbox 360 controller is better, it's the best imo
controller is excellent but cables are not, so many of them just rip tear apart
so much better than the stupid nintendo 64 joysticks
too bad they weren't included with the playstation classic.
i used to have the psone model, but it broke ages ago, but i still og t some of the games and the dualshock 1 controller for my ps2. Good times.
thanks Mark, that was the best nonsensical review I've ever watched.
oh man, these controllers bring back great memories. Good times....
What about the analog controller?
it's so hard to find genuine ps3 controllers nowadays but for ps2/ps1 it's easy all of them are genuine
Good review as always. Not a fan of the Playstation controller myself but there you go.
I'm not either, the original non analog controller that came with the PlayStation on launch day is a great controller.
Yup. They click, like a normal button, but are pressure sensitive too. Not bad for throttle/brakes in Gran Turismo et al.
dual shock 1 was what drew me to ps1. Same for ps2. ps3 had sixaxis which was ok but had low battery life so i got dual shock 3 for mgs 4 on my yloded ps3. The one i got in '08 that doesn't play ps2 still is alive and well. the ds4 will do good for ps4. Sharing stuff on ps4 will be fun.
I really like original analog-less PS1 pad. It feels really awesome!
nice review man really classic .
I have ps2 even though the ps4 is already out and it is now Tuesday 22nd September 2015 but it is still good as it was the highest selling Sony console
I agree with your comments re: the PS2 controller.
I love it.
@broli3110 The 360 pad and the Wiimote are also wireless, support rechargable batteries, and the Wiimote has full blown motion controller, unlike the 360 pad. The DS3 has a tilt sensor, that's it.
Awesome vid man!
There is a controller you left out, the analogue controller without dual shock. It was larger than the dual shock controller and had indents in the thumbsticks that were not rubberised. It was released before Dual Shock. I got one with my first playstation and I think its the best one to get if the others are too small for you and you are getting hand cramps.
I turn off the vibration on older consoles because i game for usually 12 hour sessions because no life and because all the rumbiling made my hands go numb all the time thats why i like the newer controllers rumble better because my hands won't keep falling asleep but damn older rumble was powerful.
Aserwolf you might want to look for the Dual Analog (SCPH-1180) as not only does it not rumble, it has concave analog sticks, which feel nicer than the mushroomy Dualshock analog sticks and it has a flightstick mode in which it mimics the PlayStation Analog Joystick, which came before, and therefore can be used for games like Descent, Cyberia, MechWarrior 2 and Wing Commander IV
i got one today amazingly still works only cost 5 bucks
Before the DS1 there was the Dual Analogue controller with no rumble. Most people forgot about its existence it's a nicer size controller.
My Dualshock3 broke last week and my Dualshock2 only lasted two years. However, my Dualshock1 is nine years old and still works perfectly.
as for comfort i do agree, 360 feels like a glove and dont hurt your hands after hours of playing, but hey dual shock is a great controller, one of my all time favs.
I had a 3rd party controller for ps1 and that really did shake the house down....
Best controller of all time. That the design is being used to this day speaks volumes.
I really enjoyed this review. It was informative and very entertaining at the same time. :)
These old intros were great
Great review mark, i am loving these hardware reviews so much :)
1999. Eight years old, a PS1, a DualShock, a Memory Card, and Gran Turismo.
Those were the days....
Great as always..Love it
I still have PlayStation 1 controller & my was Gray DualShock of PlayStation 1 controller with analog joysticks & I still Play lot of PlayStation 1 games I played with PlayStation DualShock controller for PlayStation 1 like gran Turismo & Shooter star fighter & NCAA gamebreaker 2000 & NASCAR thunder 2002 & Star Wars episode 1 phantom the menace & Street fighter alpha 2 & Mega man X6 & Mega man X5 & Mega man X4 & Spyro the dragon & Crash team racing & crash bandicoot & mortal kombat 4 & Castlevania symphony of Night & Gran Turismo 2
i damn like that music in 0:09 :D
my dualshock 2 has messed up r2 and l2 buttons but i still love it and use it over my other newer one lol
its like breaking in a pair of shoes its more comfortable when it gets some age
15 years after I first got my PS2 (today in 2021) I just found out the DualShock 2 had analog buttons?? I mean I guess I never noticed bc the only purpose I can think of is for racing games, but by then I was using the right analog stick for acceleration and braking
@cwis01 it basically means a joystick. the first PS controller didn't have a joystick, it only had a 4 directional "D-pad". when the first analog controller was introduced I was very happy, because intensive playing with the D-pad hurts your thumb a lot.
Before the dual shock came along, I actually bought an accessory which sticks to the D-pad and acts like a joystick. I don't remember what it's name was, but it was very cool for that time.
Maybe you could answer a question I've been curious about for a while now? What's the little, square indent in the plastic above where the wire goes into the controller for? A lot of controllers seem to have it like the NES, SNES, PSX, PS2 etc. Is it just a result of the manufacturing process or is there another reason for it?
i still have mine...epic controller
@EddieLolz3r Only thing they added after 3 generations are Analog sticks (original PS1, to Dualshock 1) and then wireless functions and mini-usb plug on the Dualshock 3.
I remember getting my first PSone (The PS1 slim) for X-Mas in 2000, it was the best thing I had ever seen at the time.
And I love that I could still use the PS1 controller on a PS3 just with an adapter.
SONY really did make an incredible controller! ^.^
Your first ps1?
Did you end up getting more?
mark your videos crack me up everytime lol
my dual shock 1 controller works with the arcade version of tekken 5 in my local arcade via the hook ups ive dropped it so many times but it still works awesome it is missing the bottom half of the analogs but they work fine i still have fond memories of playing metal gear solid with it psyco mantis.....
My duel shock controller stopped vibrating after a while so I went out and bought a new one, then when I got home I thought to myself "why did I buy that? A DS2 is the same price and it will work better with my PS2 once I get one" so I went back to the store, swapped it, and used the DS2 controller from then on. But then as I had nothing to loose I managed to fix my old controller with a soldering iron! I also did the same with My original Playstation once when it stopped working!
there is also the white PSOne controller that went with the PSOne slim.
happy belated 5th anniversary to this video....
Happy belated 6th anniversary to this video. :D
coolguy6233 happy belated 7th anniversary to this video
"They remind me of Tie Fighters"
I used to play with them when I was a kid. Best. Star Wars. Fantasies. Ever. xD
There's even another variation of the DualShock controller. The DualShock controller version that came with the smaller PSOne (and says PSOne on the controller) says Model# SCPH-110 (at least the one I have does) and has an even smaller more rounded plug.
Also, not mentioned in this review is mention of the Sony 'Dual Analog' controller, which had no rumble, concave thumbsticks and slightly longer handles as well as a flightstick mode.
*Mark .... great review dude and you are so funny too! Yes Dual 1 is better and more powerful*
Dualshock 1 is my favorite PlayStation controller.
I have a Pelican ps2 controller and the handles are bigger and the D-pad is not 4 different buttons it's just one big one. and it works and feels great
Playstation - almost 20 years and alive and kicking.
Because SIXAXIS sounds so much better than just a 'tilt' function. Remember that while Nintendo had 5 years to design a motion controller, Sony had 6 months to add the functionality. You can't do much in six months.
That's why the Arc is just coming out.
So nostalgic
i like how Sony and Microsoft continued to keep their controllers consistent with the previous version. That way you don't have to adjust to a new controller, like what Nintendo does.
And here is a quote from the review:
"SIXAXIS™
Your natural movements become part of the action. And the controller becomes a natural extension of your body. The SIXAXIS™ motion-sensing system allows users to maneuver the controller itself. With this system, sensors read when a player angles, tilts, thrusts, or pulls the controller, all in real-time and with high precision. And it's available in both the SIXAXIS™ wireless controller and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller."
Maybe you can give a review of the PlayStation Analog Joystick a try?
My rumble on my dualshock 2 stopped working, that's the one I bought the one that came with the PS2 still works
@Kickagnome Mine's from early 2002 and is still going strong, although we did have a bit of a scare once, when it got a bit finicky about playing certain things.
The average lifespan of consoles will keep going down as the years go by, but for now even original PS2s have a good chance of still working, which is splendid news.
Really, this is one of the first times I've seen one with analog sticks. I haven't ever seen one in real life.
The Dualshock 2 is my favorite
I still have the ps1 controllers with no analog sticks at all.
I remember letting my Mum play SSX once, with that controller and she always dropped it and yelped when it rumbled. :D
Dope i like the comparison gj ..
@Jagcat83
Every Playstation controller except the PS3 ones [those use USB instead of the Playstation connector] will work on a PS1.
Earlier PS models will require Analog to be turned off to work in the system menu, as well as earlier PS games [FF7 comes to mind].
Before the duel shock there was a non rumble version also
@terra1181
the original playstation controllers didn't, but in 1998 (four years after Playstation was originally released), they released the dualshock. I remember having one for my PS1.
I never had any problems with breaking, except the one I used for countless hours has a slight tilt to the left on the main analog stick. The I had a battery pack work on me for 4 years before it died so I don't know what you're talking about there.
Great review man! Lol funny! XD
i dint know this, thx!
do the Dualshock controllers released with the smaller "PSOne" have analog buttons?
i have one lying around and a PS2slim with one Dualshock 2 controller and i was just wondering.
My PS and PS2 were played with so much the controllers were worn bare, there was no texture on the sticks or any of the buttons. That's what you get with friends who're hungry for Final Fantasy Tactics and Timesplitters.
the ps1 came with 1 original controller, and the shop where i bought my ps1 is kind enough to give me an additional at no cost. But it turns out to be a very crappy 3rd party one. but my friend was a tech and he built an arcade stick for me with the board from the crappy controller, with actual arcade buttons and stick. great review
i find some games can make a DS3 vibrate like crazy while some are weak
