I'm so glad Charlie introduced me to the wonderful works of Adam Curtis.
This bloke articulates exactly what I have been thinking for a long time! Looove it!
I was thinking 'Blackadder' - then someone said it lol... but it does kick the shit out of any other tv comedy.
I hate those people who are rude to Charlie. I think he's handsome and cool!!
@kisbie Fair enough :) When I say 'old comedies' these are basically what I mean: Monty Python, Not the Nine O' Clock News, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Carry On films, Red Dwarf, Father Ted (not that old but still), Goodness Gracious Me (ditto)...
love u charlie x
Funny aneurism meets rage aneurism
Am I the first to notice Amy Hoggart eloquently praising Blackadder at 12:22?!
"yo momma's my cleaning lady."
@hippyfriend Glad to hear that the 'old comedies' you and your friends like are pretty varied. Personally, if it's of any interest to anyone, I think 'modern' should be defined as the past decade, 'retro' as 10-30 years old, and 'nostalgic' as 30-50 years old. Anything beyond that is genuinely 'old'.
"The bloke from lazytown" omfg haha!!!
That song at 0:21. Heard once now can't get it out of my head. WHAT IS IT CALLED!?!?!
I'm surprised it's taken this long before you got the answer: The J. Geils Band - Centerfold.
Thank you so much!
@Daemonhunter17 Yeah. They covered that charming bit of television history on an episode of "You have Been Watching". It had Robert Webb, Michael McIntyre and another person, whose name escapes me, in it.
Also, "Ooh, yeah, I'd give her one. Before the police arrived."
SWEETWATER RELEASE THE BEAST! FUCK YEAH!
Geeky-looking shy fellow in the middle row seemed to want to get a word in the discussion the whole episode!
Brooker for P.M!
That J Manwell bloke looks like Derek Accorah crossed with an orange.
the kids experiments can also be flawed because of asch's experiment... one kid does it., the rest usually follow in most circumstances
@sweenyadam thing is... isn't there baby going to be born on a full moon, or at 06:06:06 in the morning?
At about 00:30, what is the music?
Aww, I really like Alex Zane. He's actually a pretty intelligent guy from what I've seen of him.
Please show that demographic experiment to every commissioning editor on every channel!
@mariotaz Amen to that.
I remember seeing part of one of the episodes of America's next top model where Tyra banks ended up screaming her head off arguing with one of the contestants that got kicked off the show. Why? BECAUSE SHE WASN'T CRYING WHEN SHE WAS SENT OFF, No joke
Damn it, now I want spaghetti.
@hippyfriend Anyway, my point is that it's hard to pin down youth TV in terms of who naturally watches what these days. And by the way, when you say 'old comedies', I hope you're referring to more than just Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses and The Two Ronnies!
Can anyone name the song at 5:11?
12:20 theese are my kind of people
@mariotaz straight up
@Omnilegence Centrefold by J. Geils Band :)
Charlie Brooker is depressing because he's right. Before, I was a happy, ignorant young shit-eater who couldn't wait for the next episode of programmes like this. Now, I hate the world.
6:53, haha.
OK, I'm a 'bona fide young person' and the sample group is probably the sort of group you would get if you asked some media students at my (pretty mixed) London college to volunteer for a survey. It's not a perfect representation but it's not untrue either, I know lots of people who like old comedies, just not the majority.
People my age (with some exceptions) like:
Hollyoaks
X Factor
Little Britain
The IT Crowd
Skins
BUT most of them will also occasionally watch Horizon, Human Planet etc
Adam Curtis ftw
@451harri Watched first two seasons, and later seasons intermittedly while playing Pokemon
It sucks :P always has, always will!
@hippyfriend To be fair, there isn't so much of an age divide these days, not like there was in previous decades anyway. The succeeding generations from the baby boomers onwards have become less and less rebellious as time has gone on. Most of those shows are watched by vast numbers of middle-aged people too. (Apart from Hollyoaks perhaps, but viewers just grow out of that once they realise that it's shite.)
Well you can shut up now, youth. You can just about blummin' well shut up! Because if you've got anything horrid to say about Fern Cotton Well then you can just about blummin' well say it to me first!
When horse owners like Flossy claim to think Black Books is that great, Charlie should have asked her to name the three main characters. I'm sure these people are aware of what their peers like, but they werent asked to explain why they like them. Flossy. lol.
I am actually a little less cynical after watching this.
Series 3/4 was actually good, it still had all the Sex/Drugs but it actually included a cool story.
Jay series 4 of Skins divided me because it was to short which lead to it being and feeling underdeveloped and rushed. Season 3 tricked me at first because it started like a darker inbetweeners which is no surprise given inbetweeners had arrived like a bullet train by that point, but then gladly through season 3 tossed it to one side in favour of what skins does best.
@451harri I personally hate Hollyoaks, X Factor and Little Britain but most of my friends love them.
Dom's heaps cool.
@libran1977 :)
"Half the audience for Skins is over 35, why d'you think they're watching it?"
"'Cause they're paedophiles?"
LOL!
Wow stewie was right.....they all speak with upward inflections O.o
Shame Charlie didn't say infanticide like a master.
I'm sorry but most of those accents aren't middle class at all.
But more to the point, that "Aqsa" girl annoys the heck out of me, lifting her "Bored" sign up within seconds of anything. What would keep her attention? I genuinely wish Charlie had sprung horrific scenes of graphic, gruesome and merciless carnage on her to see whether the "Bored" placard would go up or not. Though having said that, Hollyoaks seems to have had a similar effect.
those kids were just trying to look smart on TV! they would all gladly watch shit like skins and all the other toss aimed at kids. Charlie is trying too make kids look smart but i'm not buying it! he's right to try and change our perspective on what kids want to watch but the truth is they do want to watch shit like this, not every kid, but the vast majority
@451harri
I dont, I watch somthing and make my own opinion
Dont care much for anyone elses
I don't think the word Bored was right for the test.It's more about quality than attention span.You can make a crappy documentary too.People will hate it because it was made in a way that's annoying/biased/repetitive not because the slightly boring subject matter.
LOL, twat nose xD
@betatalk357 Oh please. That show is not capable of causing a generation to self-destruct. Anyone who can't see how shallow it all is deserves what they get.
Game of thrones has more female role models than Americas next top model and Thrones has incest, weekly beheadings, teenage murderers, dragons burnings and more balls on display than you can wave a stick at, yes it's a acted fantasy drama but when That's more thrilling than next top model then the world is down the moon door
i'm 23 mate and i fucking hate all soaps and all reality shows! i was about 16 when skins came out and it made me feel sick and retarded!
The girl in the middle at the front is far too sure of herself, let somebody else have a go Miss Bording school!
those teens are pseudo-intellectuals.
The photo-shoot with them all pretending to have died violent deaths seemed gratuitous.
I nearly downvoted because I got caught up in the sheer disgust that America's Top Model was creating
The 'death' bit of America's Next Top Model was positively evil. The fact that the presenter was able to tell off a girl who was remembering her dead friend for not concentrating on looking sexy and dead herself is one of the most appalling things I've ever seen. I presume this was massively complained about by feminists at the time.
Those young people are sooooooooo annoying.
I hate bolognese.
I'm 15 and I can only name two decent programs right now: The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. If television networks dare shove fucking TOWIE down my throat I'm leaving the country.
Skins is not well written at all; I dont see it being much different from Whateva "All kids care about is drinking, sex, drugs and swearing! Lets just shove that it and that'll entertain them" ugh..
