Charlie discusses the notion of people complaining about television. He reviews Britannia High, Paul Ross's Big Black Book of Horror. Liza Tarbuck talks about Tales of the Riverbank.
Tim Key is absolutely brilliant, I find his poems and his persona/mannersisms absolutely hilarious, it's a very well thought out act even down to the way he is badly shot, getting things in his way and not quite getting his reflection in mirrors, nothing says it more than how he's introduced, 'Tim Key, resident poet and shambles'
I guess the subtlety of Tim Key's comedy went over a lot people's heads. He's one of my favourite bits of screenwipe by far. Really didn't expect so many people to not get it. The joke isn't just that its bad poetry, its the awkwardness, timing, and quite frankly hilarious images that Tim Key creates.
@QullVideo I used to think that, but then I rewatched the series and suddenly got it. I think it's supposed to be terrible topical poetry. I was at an open mic night recently, and some bloke did a similar act but with no hint of irony, so interpret this as satire of that sort of pretentious twaddle.
I'm not sure I agree. His style to me is a commentary on the 'intellectual' classes who are excellent at pontificating with hyperbole and comment, but beneath that thin veneer of 'knowing' there is nothing but pretense; he goes about bringing that to a new issue every week. I dig it!
@necrosmash Ah man I agree. Totally, agree. I thought at first "am I missing something? When do I laugh?" but to hear others admit it's pointless, doesn't make me feel like I've gone mad. hah.
YOU'RE TELLING ME!!!??? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF - to quote his excellence Charlie B. Yeh, you see, that's more meaningful that Tim Fucking Key, not that that's an achievement... :(
"It's like a spawning point for enemies in a video game, the sort of place you'd be happy to circle with frag grenades for about six hours sending limbs flying through the air, finishing off the survivors with a railgun blast to the temple".....This describes how I feel about most people and things I see on television nowadays. Nice one Charlie.
That would be interesting, but really difficult. Yeah, to much of the western world it looks like either sped up confusion or glacially slow dramatic tension, but there is a lot of cultural relevance to the Japanese behind the way they tell these stories. I feel like he would grasp the foreign nature of it and give it a fair shake, so I'd be interested in seeing that. Too bad the anime bubble is pretty much over, it would be less compelling now.
As for censorship, on the other side, you should be able to criticise things. You can point out something is racist/misogynist/homophobic/offensive to clowns etc. and it doesn't mean you support censoring it. After all, is Charlie Brooker calling for censorship when he mocks these tv shows?
Would anyone else want Charlie to review television from diiferent countries to show their own cultural characteristics? For example I'd love it if he reviewed anime.
tim key needs to learn how to be a comedian. poetry and comedy don't go well together. i'm not sure if it's the way he reads or the fact i've been permeantly scarred for life and have a fear of poetry after studying it in English, but it is not funny. Any attempts to listen to it leave me empty, so now i've given up and I now skip the Tim Key segments, or wright in the comments half way through the video to tell you that i'm skipping the Tim Key segments.
Does they say "He's THE man" or He's A man"? It sounds like the latter, and having a Y chromosome isn't really an achievement worthy of a faux-rock pop fuckery, is it.
"Where's The Paper" has me weeping with laughter every time I watch this.
I like how Brooker's sharp comments fit naturally in talking to the television set :-)
I love how Charlie's crusty, misanthropic persona drops now and then and you see his lovely, soft insides.👌❤️

To be honest, I think having your own show on BBC four where you get to sit and pick holes in things is truly great.
I fucking lost it when the Doom music started.
Im so happy I found this show.

Charlie looks so different now to how he does here, guess this was four years and a marriage ago.
Yeah, it's the combination of ageing, romance and the running he does I think.
"life-threatening dyslexia"
I guess the the top two comments have missed the bit about mocking viewer input
@Bateman666666 ...is that directed at me?

No, that was the joke.

I think that the Tim Key segments are TERRIBLE. Yeah, the poetry's shit. We get that. Shit poetry doesn't automatically equal comedy gold, though.
Now that there are 10 comments, I will quote the funniest sentence of the video expecting a torrent of thumbs ups.
