Aw, he didn’t say hello. I hoped to hear about his crazy shenanigans. Did he buy any parts for his Toyota Century already? I guess I have to watch the podcast for that stuff.
I'm from the southern US and I was floored by how affordable the groceries were and the movie theater! Also that cow noise at the checkout would have had me completely incapacitated with laughter! Like I don't think I would have been able to get through it lol I was just thinking yesterday that I hoped you would post a vlog soon. IDK why but I could very happily just watch you make dinner and pet your cats. Thank you for all of your hard work!
I think we all know, if we've watched a decent amount of Japan content, that the expensive thing in Japan is not food but rent specifically the increased cost due to key money, needing up to 6 months rent when signing combined of course with how hard it is to rent as a foreigner. Lovely video as always of course.
Your skincare recommendations made miraculous different to my cystic prone skin. Honestly never looking back, thank you for introducing me to them a few years ago! Life changer!
I'd say comparing average income to cost of things, the prices are mostly the same. They seem cheap to us on the US dollar for sure but when I think about what the poor average Japanese salary is, the prices don't seem so cheap after all. Great for us tourists! I'll be there next week, can't wait! As always, thanks for the video. Love it!
In Canada now going to the movies for 2 people the tickets alone are 20$ each and if you want like a popcorn and a drink it's an additional 25$ per person, it's absolutely ridiculous xD
@@rowan5499 Apparently many theaters are crowded since Moana 2 opened. This is interesting because it's not like Barbie. Unfortunately the flip side of this is movies don't stay in theaters for long so that's contributing to people not going, plus how it's expensive.
I went to the movies a few days ago and it was actually not as bad as I thought compared to Japan. A medium popcorn and large drink was $18 after taxes so not too far off
@@Tony_8 It really pays to join theater memberships. I don't frequent enough for AMC's A-list, but AMC's Stubbs Premier has saved me hundreds of dollars since 2018.
Here in Finland anyone can go to almost any forest and pick as much matsutake (and other mushrooms) they want! It's in the law, "Freedom to Roam". There are so much berries and mushrooms that most of them aren't picked anyway. Matsutake isn't my favorite, though. The best are Gyromitra esculenta ("ear mushroom") (poisonous before boiled), horn of plenty, winter chanterelle, golden chanterelle, porcini, and some species of russula and lactarius.
Restaurants and eating out is so expensive in Denmark I can't even fathom doing it twice a day in daily life... We do it a few times a year, pretty much special occasions only
Thank you for sharing Sharla! 🩷🩷🩷I started watching Sharla in Japan while I lived in America then I married a handsome Canadian and moved to Calgary! I actually lived on the island for 6 months too! 😅
I cant believe how many years ive been watching ur channel. Thanks for sharing the gear that you use. Your footage is always amazing. Keep up the good work :)
These are absolutely awesome to watch, love the vibes. Especially fun when I'm in Tokyo, so I'm gonna check out that sushi choushimaru! Thanks Sharla 🎉 please do more!
I've been drinking a very similar breakfast smoothie for over a decade now, but I add espresso & use frozen bananas (to offset the amount of ice / watering down flavor)
In Australia, you couldn't even buy a drink at a cinema for your ticket price. But the price of locally grown mushrooms what the hell. Missed you on TH-cam. I'm happy to see another day in the life video ❤❤
Fellow Aussie here and yeah, the cost of food and entertainment in Japan is so affordable in comparison. I do nothing that costs money here and rarely eat out, like a lot of Australians.
18:58 I was fully convinced the tree was going to fall at this point 😂 Tuna is a little rascal. It seems reasonably comparable to UK Manchester prices. We are having a cost of living crisis in UK though lol
The low price of food and drinks, and especially the movie treats were very surprising! I'm in Canada, and a large popcorn, large drink, little bag of candy and a free digital movie rental thing applied to my points account is just over $20. I loved that supermarket where all the produced was really cheap. It would be much easier to eat healthy there. Enjoyed the video, and am considering ordering a Sakuraco box for my BFF whose birthday is in March and maybe it would be sakura themed by then...I should get one for me, too.
Ive always heard about the quality of basic things like food, water and hair/skincare products in Japan that overall improve health and body SO much! I suffer from eczema and cystic acne so I really liked how you touched upon stuff like that in the vlog! PS. Always love your vids! Hello from your old home Canada!
I miss Japan, would love to go back there again in the future. Here in Vancouver, things are so expensive. I didn't even go to movies anymore, but used to go a lot back in the late 90s.
Every year I see your skin care drop and I've not grabbed one. This year the cold is already messing with my skin. I think this is a sign lol. Also, the banger playing at the grocery store.
Thank you for another lovely video! Hope to see another before Christmas, but if not - Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you, Chris, and the kitties! :)
I'm from Canada too and live in a big city! I've visited Japan (Tokyo) once and am excited to go back one day. The restaurant prices in your video and when I travelled are very similar to restaurants here. My favourite restaurants range from $14-18 CAD per person (which google is telling me is $9.90-12.70 USD). Restaurants that are more expensive are $20-30 CAD, and of course there are more expensive places than that. But most places I've been to are very similar in price to the sushi restaurant you went to in the video! For example, the last time my partner and I went to a restaurant, the total came out to about $36 CAD, and with a tip came out to around $43 CAD ($30.30 USD), for two people.
Sharla! I got the fig foam cleanser, rice toner pads, maple serum and moisturizer from the last box you did and I love them! I'm hooked! My skin hasn't been this clear in ages!!
My two cents 😅: Isolated protein like powders increase your insulin levels - make you crave sugars. Instead of a banana, combining it with a vegetable will have a more favourable effect on your blood.
Coming from a country with lots of farm land and cheap produce, it shocked me a bit to see the price of 3 bananas in Japan is the same I pay for 1.5~ kilos of them in my local farmers market in Chile! But fruit and veggies aside, prices for movie tickets, popcorn+drinks and the Italian restaurant meal are quite similar to those I see here. It's always interesting to see the similarities and differences in prices from a local's perspective instead of a tourist, so thanks for this video!

Just what I needed to motivate me in my stressful work day! I have missed Sharla!
The flakey Bourbon Lumonde candy Kitkats! We got those at Okashi-no-Machioka a couple months ago and had them side by side with the Bourbon Lumonde candy. They did so well with getting the flavor in the Kitkats.
I miss these types of videos. Keep them coming please. As for prices, compared to where I am in Georgia, USA, everything is cheaper. Also, living in a walkable city with actual public transport is a dream. I'm envious, but in a good way.
Thank you so much Sharla for the skin care deals. I love these products so much. We are similar and age have been using them for a whole year. I was just about to run out so perfect birthday timing. I am doing a tip to Japan in Dec, very much looking forward to it. Have a great Christmas and New Year. xx
I’m so surprised by some of the prices! Food is more affordable than I thought. Here in the UK it’s got crazy expensive in the last 3 years. I’d love to see cost of average rent and bills etc compared to an average persons wage. This was a really interesting video 😊.
Literally think of you every time I'm at LIFE and get the awful pew-pew-pew video game sound registers instead of the cute animal sounds! 😂 Also that cheesecake Calpis is weirdly good. The flavor is spot on.
One thing I love about the movie theatres in Japan is that I have NEVER have to worry about anyone making a noise during the movie. In Canada, I always have to worry that this might be the time when someone is going to ruin the movie experience.
I love these vlogs - they are soooo relaxing and fun! I drink a very similar smoothie to you everyday, and I know what you mean when you say you crave it! Are spinach leaves affordable/common at your local supermarket? I add spinach to my smoothie for extra iron and fibre. It darkens the colour but you genuinely can't taste it. I highly recommend adding it in if you haven't tried it before!
Oh yeah, compared to Canada, which I'm currently living in now, Japan seems do much for affordable. It's kind of crazy! Also, Chris' Italian man is perfect. I nearly died.
This was quite lovely :) I get excited seeing pokemon stuff, I just got back into card collecting, going to give my nephew his first card packs and binder and see how it goes as he's just discovering it. Man, I'll never get tired of pokemon
I remember going to Japan in 2008 and I was warned that Japan is expensive, so I was a bit concerned, but when I got there everything was cheaper than in Norway. Seems like things are still cheaper than in Norway. I reckon though, that housing is more expensive in Japan, in the big cities, than in Norway. Don't get me wrong, housing is expensive in Norway as well, but we do only have about 5.5 million people in about the same area as Japan, so we're less pressed in that regard. I often find myself wishing that I hadn't encountered health issues so that I could have continued studying Japanese back then, though I am making an attempt again now and would really like to visit Japan again in the future.
Yeah I find Japan especially food a lot cheaper than here in Australia (and particularly my home city Perth). Transport too - took a few taxis when in Fukuoka and was very reasonable. And ooo skincare box! I still use a lot of stuff from your first boxes my fav thing is the moisturizer cream always running out 😅
I'm always amazed at how affordable the food there is. Living in coastal California, that sushi and the pasta at the end would be two or three times as expensive. Looks like amazing pasta there.
It was fun to compare, the prizes are quite similar in Spain. Looks like theatre popcorn and drinks are so expensive everywhere (I always sneak some candy XD)
The area at the beginning of the video reminds me of the stairs in the last scene of the movie "Your Name" lol I love how in your videos like this, you have so many parts that seem just dedicated to cats even if they're not there like buying food/things for them or buying things that are cat-themed. There's so many delicious looking-chocolates there! I've tasted a Black Thunder choco before but I don't know which one it was (an aunt sent it to us from Japan). All of the food you guys tried out this time look really good, too! The trees covered with lights there are so pretty. Christmas is getting closer, I guess.
I live in Ireland and I am from Missouri. Moved here almost five years ago and was shocked about price compared to price by in Missouri. I love living in Ireland
My cats love those raised angle bowls! I've got 4 of them in different places in the house. I've been telling all my friends with cats to switch to them.
Compared to where I am in California, everything seems CRAZY cheap! The movies seem pretty comparable, and going out to eat at certain places seemed pricey, BUT that's why I almost never do either of those things! I'm too much of a penny-pincher! Haha! Still, the supermarkets seemed AWESOME! And the sushi (if you didn't eat too much) seemed affordable AF compared to here! Loved it! :D
I thought about you last week. I learned the yorkshire toast and jam tea was discontinued (it was my favorite too) when I went to restock the cupboard. They've replaced it with a caramel biscuit one that reminds me of biscoff. It's somehow more biscuity than the regular biscuit one.
I would advise putting in the final of the video a somatory of everything, so we could have a better notion. We can do that, but it would facilitate having it in the video
It is amazing how, compared to where I’m at in Arizona, USA, the prices are so cheap. I plan to visit soon, and for sure will splurge lol where I live, a gallon of milk is $2.40, bread is $2-$3. Rent is $1700+ for a studio apt, gasoline $3.40 per gallon, a family of four would need a monthly income of $6k+ to be ok.
Comparing it to Manhattan it’s surprising what was more or less expensive than the other. From that perspective, I’d say Tokyo is more affordable overall than I originally thought.
If anyone is interested in moving to Tokyo, the best place is Kawasaki. It's literally the cheapest area of Tokyo to live, and one of the cheapest places in all of Japan. The reason for it being so cheap is due to the area being industrial and near the water, but it still has some decent homes.
Thanks so much for another fun video ❤ it's always nice to see daily things. I was curious if you could explain in your videos sometime how to pick out ripe persimmons? I see you eat them, tried to get one here in us and I couldn't figure out how to pick out a good one. Also the veggies are so huge there! The carrots are finger size here in us lol 😅
My husband and I were there last September 2023 and it was like stepping into the 90s. It was so affordable. I am also from Canada and am being choked by the cost of living here.
Ahhh the hot drinks in the vendis were my thing! I was so sad the first year we lived there when I found out they weren't there all year haha! I would wait every year for them to come back (never soon enough!) Love these videos and missing Japan!

Still, the supermarkets seemed AWESOME! And the sushi (if you didn't eat too much) seemed affordable AF compared to here! Loved it! :D
Yo Sharla! Love your smoothie recipes ❤😆 thank you for sharing!!
Your video make me happy this morning. Thanks ;)
I thought about you last week. I learned the yorkshire toast and jam tea was discontinued (it was my favorite too) when I went to restock the cupboard. They've replaced it with a caramel biscuit one that reminds me of biscoff. It's somehow more biscuity than the regular biscuit one.
Will have to try that when we’re in England 😮
I love seeing the fruits and vegetables that available in Japan.
Awww I wanted to see Tuna in his Tuna box. It’s the interesting flavours that japan has that intrigues me.
A Japanese advent calendar sounds like lots of fun
Really missing vlogmas! I love your vlogs
I found the exact same KitKats a few months ago in Germany at a snack store. Didn’t know there were new to Japan. there’re so good 😊
If anyone is interested in moving to Tokyo, the best place is Kawasaki. It's literally the cheapest area of Tokyo to live, and one of the cheapest places in all of Japan. The reason for it being so cheap is due to the area being industrial and near the water, but it still has some decent homes.
good job in reaching out to more people, the spanish speaking population is vast. i should forward this to my cousins and see what they say.
Thanks so much for the field trip☀️☁️🌸
Just here to say, your and Chris videos are the best
Thank you so much ♥️🙏
Thanks so much for another fun video ❤ it's always nice to see daily things. I was curious if you could explain in your videos sometime how to pick out ripe persimmons? I see you eat them, tried to get one here in us and I couldn't figure out how to pick out a good one. Also the veggies are so huge there! The carrots are finger size here in us lol 😅
You and Chris are adorable together XD
My husband and I were there last September 2023 and it was like stepping into the 90s. It was so affordable. I am also from Canada and am being choked by the cost of living here.
Ahhh the hot drinks in the vendis were my thing! I was so sad the first year we lived there when I found out they weren't there all year haha! I would wait every year for them to come back (never soon enough!) Love these videos and missing Japan!
The fruit and the vegetables looks so good and fresh
