Glad you survived. It's always crazy when you're sitting in your home thinking 'yeah, if I had to move it would be super easy, just throw everything in a couple of boxes, it'll be fine.' Then you actually start boxing and every cupboard has a portal at the back that leads through to that junk yard in Labyrinth, and your bookshelf turns into the National Library, and you have three more cats than you thought you owned... moving is always awful. But hopefully the new place is totally worth it.
This comment's made me laugh you know XD. Because it's really so true "Oh just a couple boxes, bit of luggage and I'll be fine", then the sweater you haven't seen since before TH-cam was a thing decides now is the perfect time to be found
The last time I moved I only had one box left and it was a tall box and I put my library in it. I felt so bad for the movers. I have now lived in my home 20+ yrs and it would be a lot more work
Can you imagine, thinking you have a respectable job at a housing agency, but then getting assigned the task to screen the potential tenants social media for hamsters and tattoos o_o
Emmaaaaaa it doesn't matter how often you upload to youtube honestly, I'm just glad you do it whenever because you're SO GOOD AT IT. The editing, your humor and storytelling are so top tier!! The recreating of the office with the rap was so excellent lmao... so surreal. Needing waaaay more boxes than you think and taking apart furniture in unhinged ways due to exhausted brains is so very accurate for the moving experience lol. I'm glad the movers kindly agreed to move your giant plant over as is and you wrapped it up so well for moving... it would have been so sad to have to chop it down so much as the company initially suggested. Thanks as always for your hard work, and for documenting the details and craziness of the move! ✨
I'm so impressed with you making all of those phonecalls in Japanese by yourself. I can manage some calls, but sometimes the vocab gets beyond me and I have to ask them to repeat themselves many times while I look up the word they said 😅
Sorry Emma I had to laugh at how you took down that shelf 😅 Man I've been there. So tired/stressed that brain ain't braining. Glad you're more settled now! (My jaw dropped at the van hire costs omg)
I moved house just over a year ago in the UK and it cost me just under a £1000 which is quite close to 166000 Yen. All the padding they put up as well for protection I didn't get any of that included either.
Me and my friends always laugh about how they don’t know how to choose music that matches the vibe like we’ll be chilling at a cafe and then WAP starts playing 😂
So on your little plant, that looked like what we call a Mud Daubber(spelt phonetically cause i dont know which way its spelled). Basically its a type of wasp thats less aggresive and they build their nests out of mud that they find and plop it together like a little mud home. Usually by the tie you see it its been used for their eggs and they have moved on, thats why you'd see shells and some occasional molting inside when you break them off.
The fact that a tenant installs AC for their place and they aren't extremely grateful and absolutely wanting to keep them for the next tenant is WILD to me!!! How strange! Glad you're back - hope you have a happy holiday.
Same. as an hvac technician, the usual costs of that boggles my mind. But also not to leave it as an attractive thing for your property. The only thing i can think of is if it is installed i guess that would make the owner responsible for service done on it.
Honestly I would be completely removing MY ac units because there was no mention of the landlord offering any consideration for improving their property??? "Yeah I'll keep one for free thanks but you can still pay to remove the other one" hahahah really??
Omg Emma, please do like 4 sponsorships, that is so much money. Video was super informative. 👍 It was interesting to hear how polite the moving company was, triple checking as they charged you. "Are you sure you're sure?" The rap reenactment was great too. 🔥 I imagined the owners of your current place being of two minds. Owner one: I don't like foreigners! They never do their trash right! The only thing I like about them is this bangin' rap music. The rest of these foreigners are such a pain! Owner two: Yes, but they have money! And if this one is willing to jump through the hoops we give her, it will PROVE that she has money! And we need a renter. If we miss out on this one, we might have to wait a year for someone new. Owner one: Wow, she is actually doing this. Owner two: I kind of feel bad. Lets update the toilet at least.
Sorry the process has been such a pain. Happy to see a new Emma video still! I last visited in Japan in August and the sort of passive-aggressive annoyance with foreigners is always my least favorite part of visiting Japan.
I am shooook that they called your agency to tell them that you can’t bring your hamster 😂 Also tattoos?! I learn something new every day in Japan lol Ps I’m obsessed with your jumper!
All these move-in shenanigans is partly why I thought twice about moving to Japan. I'd love to live there, but renting seems like it's out of the question. It might just be easier to get a house at that point. Grats on surviving the move!
I was actually thinking about how I haven’t seen a video of yours in a while the other day ! Good to see you uploading again. And yes moving suuuuuuuucks !
I recall from psychology moving is one of the top 5 most stressful experiences life can throw at you. It looks intense having to do this so regularly. I've only done it once and it was a halfway house anyway.
So happy to have you back on TH-cam! 😇 The process of moving in Japan sounds awful and crazy expensive... but I am happy that you are happy with the new appartement and area! Cant wait for the tour! And how much did I miss the adorable and funny style of your videos! 😂 Happy holidays!
I am an established home owner in the US with a mortgage and 0 intentions of moving, but you bet your behind I sat here and watched this whole video intently. Moving sucks everywhere but it’s so much harder than it needs to be in Japan! What kind of hateful person even thinks about REMOVING an AC?! With those Tokyo summers?! Absolutely not.
I’m honestly so incredibly impressed you managed to pull all this off. I’m only 13:25 minutes into the video and I’m like “FFFFFFF THAT.” I’d be so overwhelmed and just full on quit and move back home. Well done.
For comparison. When I was moving in Vienna a few years back: -Agency fee 2xRent+Tax -Deposit 3xRext -1,5 Rent upfront (moving in middle of month) Luckily almost no stuff (clutter) at that time so no need to pay separate movers... As for global comparison I think Toyko salaries may not be that far off....
Well.. but the agency was optional and everything else just paid the rent or was retrievable. Not to mention that in japan the process restarts after 2 years meaning you either pay extra so they let you stay or you move again. In austria they luckily appreciate long term renters.
Like, I know you wouldn't, given the power stuff at play, but the temptation to send them the wikipedia article for hamsters, with the lifespan section highlighted.
Welcome back you have been missed.. more than you can imagine so no more "I'm in a funk OK" altho I did love those old vids in your kitchen just cooking and a chattin
I am glad you are feeling better, were abled to go home and found a wonderful new apartment. Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday's Love and Well Wishes in the New Year from Michigan!
We JUST finished a crazy move right after our first visit to Japan and butting into the holiday season... I can't imagine filming any it with all the chaos going on around you. Thank you for the video! I hope you can take it easy and just enjoy the new place now. :)
Moving house is such a trip... It always starts out by packing boxes neatly in an organized way. By the end, it turns into a free for all, chucking the odds and ends that are left into whatever box. lol. I hate moving. 😁 Thank you for the video! Your storytelling is so cute!
I was just binge watching Chris's content and got to him talking about your section of the abroad in Japan trip. Which reminded me about your channel and Tokyo creative which was how I Chris's channel to begin with! So glad you are well and you are back. Sorry you had to go through such a stressful process but hope everything is good and smooth sailing from now on. Hope to see more of your content again, take care Emma. Wishing you all the best and hoping youtube can help recuperate some of the moving fees.
I'm so glad the new apartment worked out after such a stressful journey. Congratulations! The air con issue alone was insane, let alone everything else.
As an American, i see the fees and rent prices and STILL think. Wow that's cheap lol don't know if that says how broken and expensive my countries housing situation is or what 😅
Congratulations on the new apartment!! It is so worth all the hassle to live somewhere you love. Those moving fees are terrible but the monthly rent is very reasonable. Though that is with the current exchange rate which is obviously not great for the yen right now. Excited for the proper apartment tour :)
The lady on the moving company call spoke so much clearer and slower than most Japanese phone calls I've had to take! Japanese on the phone is still my absolute kryptonite.
@ 😂😂😂 have no worries about me. I’m just glad you woke up from your YT slumber 😝 Have been watching your journey since small aprtm. I rewatch that vid regularly to remind myself of the simpler times. Makes me happy. I’m surely not the only one!
Just yesterday i watched some of your old videos and i was hoping for you to return soon. And here you are! Really happy to see you again Emma :) And glad it was all worth it moving! I guess i would just have gone back to Germany instead of going through this ordeal^^
I’ve been with you through several moves now and you always make the process interesting. Moving is certainly never boring! Happy for you in your new apartment. 😊 Merry Christmas to you and yours 🎄
You look very pretty and healthy, and the move (and surgery) have been successful. Talking about jumping through hoops, although moving is a hassle in the US, Japan is taking it to a new level.
I'm happy you got to move where you wanted Emma! I remember your other video about the stairs and the cicada noise, length of travel outside the city, yikes! It was too much, great decision for you!! Happy holidays and enjoy your new barrio aka neighborhood, and apartment! 😊
How I saved money my recent move: - renting privately from an acquaintance (from and to) - stealing boxes from the grocery store (bought a small pack in the end because it was annoying) - borrowing a friend's mini truck (50km distance. Took a few trips) - new house had a washing machine and fridge so I gave away my previous ones Cost: my time and effort 😅
Yay congrats on the move Emma! The aircon removal is crazy, I guess it's in case you move in to broken smelly aircon, but I thought Japanese people generally take good care of things? Looking forward to your next video!
that person that messaged you to tell you how privileged you are just comes off as very jealous imo. It sounds like one of those people that just goes around bringing people down every time they try to share their success or events that are going on in their lives. "Oh I went to Mc Donald's the other day and ... " "Children in Africa are starving, you should be grateful for having food!" "But I w..." "Some people don't even have 10 dollars a week for groceries!" Insufferable. I am glad you are settled down now, and I hope you don't get any more kidney stones. Those suck
phew, u have been super busy., i can imagine the stress & disappointment you must have felt.Missed ur face! Congrats on the move..Hope you've settled in well. And i wish you a wonderful Christmas Emma ☺
Yesss Emma lets goooo! Moving is tough but you are TOUGHER! New place main character arc begins! Ps: the music at the end sounded so stardew valley like lol
Moving right now just from Shinjuku ku to Shibuya ku and this shit is breaking me. Just finding the apartment was like removing a tooth thanks to all the “helpful” agents here 😢😢 And I still haven’t started on shifting my utilities etc. BIG SAD I booked a small moving company from kurashi no market btw! Was a lot cheaper than what the big and medium sized moving companies quoted me
List before moving away reminds me of checking list when flying captain checks before plane is taking off! It also reminds me of list what is it like when you move away from your summer cabin.. but the list is smaller. But of course, when some of these things are communicated in Japanese, it is task of its own. There was a lot of knowledge and experience gathered to this one video. Moving is never easy.
That is expensive, somehow moving in my state in the US 15 miles down the road was more expensive though lol😅 if the calculator is right your moving truck quoted was $1300 and my move 2 years ago was $1600. Similar situation of apartment sizes. Crazy how moving can add up, but was moving in with my boyfriend and we did not want to lug stuff down from my 2nd floor (3 flights of stairs) apartment ourselves.
Although we lived on a US airbase when we were in Japan, our move out company when we moved back to the states was a Japanese company. It was so amazing watching them build a special box to protect my grandma's sewing table we'd brought with us. And seeing the difference in how the American moving company packed things vs. the Japanese company. Now, we did have at least one box that seemed to go missing. There are some board games we've never found again. HOWEVER. I do not think that was the Japanese moving company's fault necessarily. Things happen. We did also have a short time in the states before we moved AGAIN and so I'm not 100% sure when the box went missing as there were boxes that never got unpacked. So it could have been Japan - New Mexico or New Mexico - Utah **shrug**. Point is - watching them create a special box to move the sewing table which could NOT have it's legs removed to protect them - aces.
Firstly Hello it's been a while but I'm so pleased for you Emma it's a lovely apartment to make yours in time. I also am planning a move soon and i pray it's going to be considerably easier, oh wow that's an insane amount of money, what is it with people nowadays. But I digress I love what you've done with the wooden base on your Christmas Tree, I'm afraid I'm going to have to steal that idea for mine lol. Have yourself a joyous fun Christmas Emma.
Glad to see that you are okay. I was wondering why you were MIA. You would think that Japan would have more foreigner friendly protection laws with it's shrinking population.
During my university time I had to move every 6 months (german dual study system aka 6 months of study and 6 months of practical work experience in reverse). I usually just rented a big van, stuffed everything inside and drove to the other city. It was usually very stressfull and took the entire day (wouldn´t want to pay for an additional day to have the car ;) ). Can´t imagine the amount of work and stress involved to check everything off of your list. I do naively plan on moving to japan for some time eventually but no matter how often I hear it the process over there is just very unusual in my opinion. - The straight up and wide spread denial / discrimination against anyone non japanese would probably be illegal in germany... though I guess it just means that you get a faster answer in japan. -The key money and the way they just take the deposit is also nuts. I guess if you know about it you can just factor it into the price but yeah... it still sucks. - The amount of stuff you need to buy and probably throw away at the end is kinda crazy too as well as the recycling costs involved. I usually try to accumulate as little as possible so far but when you live somewhere you do end up wanting x, y, z and having to move about every 2 years makes that quite the inconvenience I suppose. - I truly wonder if japanese people go trough this too every 1-2 years and why everyone just accepts it and wants to keep it that way? I mean they are so hard to change but accept being forced to move this often? Seems odd... or do they just end up buying a house?
Glad you survived. It's always crazy when you're sitting in your home thinking 'yeah, if I had to move it would be super easy, just throw everything in a couple of boxes, it'll be fine.' "Oh just a couple boxes, bit of luggage and I'll be fine", then the sweater you haven't seen since before TH-cam was a thing decides now is the perfect time to be found
OMG this happened to me and I had to pull an all-nighter and finished just as the moving truck was arriving. I'll never move again.
The last time I moved I only had one box left and it was a tall box and I put my library in it. I felt so bad for the movers. I have now lived in my home 20+ yrs and it would be a lot more work
I wouldn’t mind the additional cats though.
Literally every time I’ve moved I’ve thought ‘we don’t have a lot of stuff’ then a full van later we’re like 🫨
Can you imagine, thinking you have a respectable job at a housing agency, but then getting assigned the task to screen the potential tenants social media for hamsters and tattoos o_o

Good to see you Back Emma, keep going!
That was one amazing video!!! Thank you for taking us on your journey xxx
Thank you for watching!! :)

Thanks for premiering this video Emma im glad you found this place and looking forward on what you do in the future! ❤❤
Thanks Highwind! The premier was fun!

更新楽しみにしてます!
見てくれてありがとうございます!
Glad to see your update. Sorry about the kidney stone. I'm looking forward to your more involved schedule. Enjoy your new digs.
YES IVE BEEN WATCHING UR APARTMENT VIDEOS SINCE THE BEGINNING ❤❤❤❤ NEW ERA
So happy for you Emma!
I’m honestly so incredibly impressed you managed to pull all this off. I’m only 13:25 minutes into the video and I’m like “FFFFFFF THAT.” I’d be so overwhelmed and just full on quit and move back home. Well done.
For comparison. When I was moving in Vienna a few years back:
-Agency fee 2xRent+Tax
-Deposit 3xRext
-1,5 Rent upfront (moving in middle of month)
Luckily almost no stuff (clutter) at that time so no need to pay separate movers...
Still the move in cost was cca 4000-4500€....
Not the mention there are also common minimum rent duration 12 months plus termination notice usually 3 month in advance...Quite annoying (and not cheap) to switch flats...
Isn't Austria one of those German speaking countries where people take kitchens with them when moving, or maybe only when selling....
Obviously not the most important part of the video but that is a BEAUTIFUL Birds of Paradise you've got there
So happy for you that you got the apartment. You're a very strong person, proud of you. Patiently waiting on yr nxt vids. Happy Holidays 🎉
The hip hop contract signing bit KILLED me! 😂
The new lighthouse looks great! especially the rendering of the streaming room, can barely tell it's CGI ^_^
It's crazy to see how complicated and stressful moving apartments can be
I am glad you are feeling better, were abled to go home and found a wonderful new apartment.
Thank you for the video! Your storytelling is so cute!
Love the rockabilly curl hairstyle, very Amelda May. Happy to see you back.
Congrats, Emma!!!
That background check process is wild. Did you sweep for surveillance devices? I'd be worried about hidden cameras after all that.
Close to a million yen relative to what can't be more than 200k monthly seems really really wild. Woah. Otsukare!
(edit) Man have I missed that outro
Congrats on the new place!!!
Congratulations and so glad it's over for you. It sounds so harrowing and I'm hoping you love the new place!
I once had to move out and get into my new place within one week. Luckily I was on a steady and stable diet of mushrooms and hot chocolate.
Moving is THE WORSTTTTT. I hope you enjoy your new home!!
Great to see you! Glad you are enjoying your new place. Looking forward to more content. tfs Oh and Happy Holidays!🎄
Thank you for watching! Happy holidays!!! :)
I'm so glad the new apartment worked out after such a stressful journey. Congratulations! The air con issue alone was insane, let alone everything else.
Yeah, Emma's back to brighten my days 😊. I have missed you and I love your new apartment 🥰

I saw you posted and immediately went *CLICK*
Congrats on the new place!!
Glad to see you back..kind of forgot about your blogs for a couple years. Always remember your “tiny hands” videos.
WOW! That is a lot of work! I'm glad it worked out for you!
I’ve missed your videos they always make my day. Glad to see that you’r doing well Emma. You didn’t speak too much about your hospital visit.
If you enjoy emma, watch her on twitch. She mostly streams twice a week
The lady on the moving company call spoke so much clearer and slower than most Japanese phone calls I've had to take! Japanese on the phone is still my absolute kryptonite.
Been daily checking your feed. It’s here! 🏙️
omg its been 3 months are you ok ;-; sorry to make you wait!
@ 😂😂😂 have no worries about me. I’m just glad you woke up from your YT slumber 😝
Have been watching your journey since small aprtm. I rewatch that vid regularly to remind myself of the simpler times. Makes me happy. I’m surely not the only one!
@@TokidokiTravellerjust finished watching. Really excited for what’s coming next! 🎄🛷❄️
Here I thought my experiences moving within NYC was a pain in the ass. よく頑張ったね!おめでとう!
Looks lovely, congrats 🎉🎉
Just yesterday i watched some of your old videos and i was hoping for you to return soon. And here you are! Really happy to see you again Emma :) And glad it was all worth it moving! I guess i would just have gone back to Germany instead of going through this ordeal^^
It’s so nice to see you again, Emma! Can’t wait to see the new videos. And congratulations on surviving another move in Japan! ❤

I'm happy you got to move where you wanted Emma! I remember your other video about the stairs and the cicada noise, length of travel outside the city, yikes! It was too much, great decision for you!! Happy holidays and enjoy your new barrio aka neighborhood, and apartment! 😊
Congrats on the move! I empathise with the rants, moving is a lot.
Welcome back!
How I saved money my recent move:
- renting privately from an acquaintance (from and to)
- stealing boxes from the grocery store (bought a small pack in the end because it was annoying)
- borrowing a friend's mini truck (50km distance. Took a few trips)
- new house had a washing machine and fridge so I gave away my previous ones
Cost: my time and effort 😅
The bit with your hamster is wild.
Sometimes I have the feeling it's cheaper and easier to buy a house in japan then renting an apartment 😆
That rap recreation 😆😆😆
Yay congrats on the move Emma! The aircon removal is crazy, I guess it's in case you move in to broken smelly aircon, but I thought Japanese people generally take good care of things? Looking forward to your next video!
Unrelated to the video, but my niece walked in and said, "I like her! She has beautiful hair."
that person that messaged you to tell you how privileged you are just comes off as very jealous imo. The whole mail thing is the same in France strangely enough. Mail is email. Drives me nuts.
25:21 Why didn't they use blue foam for the doorframe as well! (That foam trick is brilliant btw, never thought of it!)
Hun, pause your resignation letter, Emma has uploaded a new video!!
Moving right now just from Shinjuku ku to Shibuya ku and this shit is breaking me. Just finding the apartment was like removing a tooth thanks to all the “helpful” agents here 😢😢 And I still haven’t started on shifting my utilities etc. BIG SAD
I booked a small moving company from kurashi no market btw! Was a lot cheaper than what the big and medium sized moving companies quoted me
Hey long time viewer here. Hope you are doing okay. Remember to prioritise yourself over your work :)
All the best 😊😊💕💕
My lord I'm as shocked as you was when you heard those prices jeeeez!! But thank you for letting us know how all this hassle works.
12:30 and I thought UK letting agents were bad for fees!
So happy you are back because was wondering if finally moved.
More “live” updates happen on twitch ☺️
Fancy seeing you here!
YO YOU PREVAILED NICE JOB
I could see where 1500 is steep for a short move. Cost me 16000 to move 13 hrs away. Now the back end moving fees sound like a nightmare
Hi Emma! I think you're really cool! Love watching your videos.
I love your taste in art. Have you ever looked up Charles Culver. His art work is amazing
Emma youre just too funny and adorable! ❤
17:24 maybe they installed it because they knew you love bidets 😂😄
