  • Paint will not stick to a glossy finish, watch this video to learn how to paint glossy furniture without sanding off existing finish. The clearcoat step is not needed. I just put to protect due to high use. There is a risk of yellowing.

      Queen Anne, Chippendale, and other formal furniture come to life when painted white.
      Your vid just popped-up and it's the best I've seen for non-prep painting.
      I use Zinsser 123 and BIN aerosol cans for priming. Not much primer per can (due to viscosity) but excellent coverage. Zinsser BIN primer is oil base BUT you can use H2O base paint after 48 hours.
      Great, informative vid. What's your latest furniture project?

    Thank you very much. I have been searching for a while trying to find the right way to do a similar chair and got the runaround videos. This one has no long-winded stories or expensive supplies by sponsered companies. Just facts and proof. Love it. Now I can complete my project. Doing over my room to look like a castle and bought antique, detailed chairs, then got stuck on the right way to make them not look yellow/brown old. Keep up the good work. Peace to Dads Garage. Haha.

    This is EXACTLY what I needed. I have 3 barstools and a shelving unit that are an out-dated 90’s light oak with that glossy finish. They don’t match anything in the house but the pieces are solid wood and I’d hate to get rid of them. I consulted with a contractor who did some work for me and he said I’d have to strip them and sand them before I can paint them 😳 That’s much more work than I want to put in and that’s when I came across this video. It’s going to save these barstools from a life of being tucked away in a storage unit. Thank you for the clear, concise information and the detailed instructions. You my friend are awesome.

    You could also use very fine steel wool in place of sand paper in between each coat of primer and that would give it a lot smoother finish.

  • @BS-dq1kz
    @BS-dq1kz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thank you! Great explanation. This is how I’ve been doing but just wanted to make sure it was going to last.
    To be honest, I can’t decide if I like the Zinsser 123 primer because it is super thin and is streaky and I don’t think it covers darker areas well enough. I personally feel like the Kilz2 Latex primer is best for coverage and it goes on much more smoothly. But that’s just my own experience.
    Too, I love love love Polycrylic BUT it absolutely positively can leave a yucky yellow residue on white painted furniture. It doesn’t do it every single time but most of the time in my own experience. And I use thin coats and even tried sanding between. It changes the final crisp white color to a more dingy white. I’ve even had it turn some white paint so yellow that it looked like the piece of furniture had been in a smokers home 10 years.
    So, I choose Polycrylic for every single top coat and every project IF I don’t paint it white. The poly is gorgeous over stain though! Wowzer!
    I hope I’m not being too negative. I agree with your suggestions and appreciate them. I’m just saying from my experience with the Zinser123 primer and the Polycrylic, I’ve had some inconsistent results. So, I use them but I prefer a different primer typically. That’s all.

    • @RollingThruLife
      @RollingThruLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes it is thin and streaky, that why i ha to do 2 coat and a little sand, and yes the poly is not needed an can cause yellowing

      @@marywilson7364 since he/she didn't respond, the most likely answer is the counterpart to polycrylic...an oil-based polyurethane. Polycrylic is water-based so much easier cleanup. I didn't know till now that it may yellow...bummer, my project is white. :(

    Omg, I had watched this video several months ago and made just a few notes about it, listing just the products you used. I thought I would be able to remember everything at the point that I was ready to do my project. I just pulled my notes out and for the life of me I could not remember anything else about where they came from. I have spent the last 2- 3 hours searching the internet with the product names in hopes that I could figure it out. I thought I might have a screenshot somewhere so I looked on three different devices. It was so frustrating! Eventually I found my way back here and as soon as the video started, I knew I was in the right place. At any rate, thank you for posting it. I have a fireplace with a lot of ornate detail and the idea of sanding everything and cutting in with paint/a brush was overwhelming until I had seen your video. I will be getting started on this project soon. Nice work and thanks again.

      Have you started your project yet? How did it go?

    • @l.p.9568
      @l.p.9568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tatianaortiz9858 It ended up being a disaster but I blame myself. I totally thought I had Zinsser primer but it was Kilz and I only realized it after I had thoroughly primed my fireplace. Kilz doesn't claim to be a "no sanding necessary" primer but Zinsser does. Everything rests on that so my foundation was bad and caused subsequent issues with the regular paint practically falling off in spots. I debated whether or not to take it back down to the original finish but in most areas, it seemed okay. I am mentally prepared that someday I'll have to deal with it.
      Also, another issue is that I had to spray paint on a horizontal surface (the top of the fireplace) and no matter how carefully I applied it, the spray left "shadows". I did about 3-4 coats hoping it would even out but it never totally did.
      And...I spray painted inside bc the fireplace was too big to take outside. I put up plastic sheeting like a Dexter kill room but it still ended up getting on the floor and furniture on the other side of the room.
      And unrelated to anything in the original post but maybe good to know too, I also had to brush paint a black area which butted up to the white spray painted area. Although I used blue painter's tape, it bled through badly. And to add insult to injury, when I pulled the tape off the white area, the white paint peeled off due to issue #1.
      Some of us serve as an example and others serve as a warning! :S

    OMG, I thought I was the only one to use Zinsser for painting furniture. I like to brush on the Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer Sealer Stain-Killer. Sometimes when you try to paint over furniture stained from the 1940's & 1950's, the stain seeps through every product except for my Zinsser. And the best part is it is water-based and drys in one hour. Of course I light sand before the second coat.

      The very light spot sanding that I did just to ensure smooth which took zero effort and 1 minute is NOTHING compared to having to SAND OFF ENTIRE ORIGINAL FINISH! Thanks

    Thank you so much for your video and tips! I have been repainting with spray paint all my patio furniture and decided to paint a rusty metal more modern side table. I unfortunately went with Rustolium in a can (not spray paint). Now I know what you mean about not using a brush on furniture. Spary paint is the way to go! I have one more coat to paint and then I want to paint a design over the gloss. I have a question for you, can I use acrylic gloss paint, on the oil based Rustolium?

    Great video, exactly what I was looking for, thank you! How do you achieve a smooth finish with the spray paint? In my experience you get drips or ares where the paint is 'running'

    • @RollingThruLife
      @RollingThruLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, if your getting runs/drips with spray paint your putting too much in one spot, basically your too close with the can and/ or moving to slow. You want to be like a good 6" away and do multiple passes back and forth till good coverage

    • @RollingThruLife
      @RollingThruLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The primer lets the paint bond, without it the paint wont stick to a glossy finish. I m pretty sure white is the only color primer comes in.

    @gabriellemishou8653 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With the table top could you use paint the same way as you did the chairs? or would it come off?

    • @RollingThruLife
      @RollingThruLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the primer will adhere to any surface, then you can paint.
