8:56 Fans do get to keep the ball! If it's an important home run, sometimes these balls can be worth a lot of money too. One ball from a record-breaking home run this season recently sold for $1.5 million!

You do get to keep a baseball that goes into the seats, but you achieve a higher state of grace if you give it to a kid sitting near you.

It’s funny that you mention filling out score cards, because that was HUGE for Americans throughout the 20th century. An entire game of baseball can be recorded in a scorecard, down to every at bat. It was very common for working people to have their sons or daughters fill out a scorecard as they listened to or watch a game so they could see the story of the game when they got back. It’s fun to see you did the same, but with Cricket.

12:26 Schwarber's home run here went 443 feet (135m)! You can see numbers printed every so often on the fence that tell you how far away that specific portion is.
Down the foul lines on either side of the field, the current MLB rules state that the fence needs to be at least 325 feet (99m) away, and a minimum of 400 feet (122m) is required for center field. There are some stadiums built that do have fences that are slightly closer than this, but the main idea is to prevent extremely close fences from allowing easy home runs. Before this rule was put in place, one team had a fence in left field that was only 250 feet (76m) away!

Interestingly, I got to see the Philadelphia pitcher, Ranger Suarez, in his first career game (26 July 2018 against Cincinnati).

Balls hit in the air and caught before hitting the ground are outs, whether or not they are in fair territory.
They go through a lot of balls. Any ball hit into the stands can be kept. In addition to that, sometimes a player, after making the third out, will toss the ball into the stands. It’s a treat to go home with a ball from the game. Sometimes if the visiting team hits a home run, the home team fan will throw the ball back on the field to show their displeasure. 😎

Baseball’s version of the World Cup, the World Baseball Classic (WBC), will be played this year starting on March 8th. It will mark the first time the WBC is played since 2017 (COVID caused a multi-year delay). Really seems like the delay was a blessing in disguise though, because this time around, superstar players from MLB have pledged themselves to national teams at a very high rate that has never been seen before. This development has added a huge amount of credibility to the WBC as an institution - and with it, has brought a lot of hype. I can safely say that this is by far the most anticipated WBC since the very first tournament back in 2006. And as electric as you’ve found the World Series atmosphere to be, the WBC can reach a level even beyond that. I can promise that you won’t want to miss it.
P.S, Great Britain has a team, and has (for the first time ever) qualified for the WBC! In a surprising turn of events, they even got a commitment from Jazz Chisholm, a young and very exciting All-Star in MLB who was born in the Bahamas.

In the late 30's there was an international baseball series between Britain and the US that Britain won! Having researched it but maybe there were some Canadians involved?

The first baseball World Series was played in 1903. Since then, it's been played every year except for 1904 and 1994. I bring this up to show how much of a "classic" the World Series really is.
The home run by Alec Bohm in the second inning was the 1,000th home run hit in the World Series all-time.

Unless its is a Milestone homerun (first for a player or some record being broken) It is usually kept by the fans.
If it is a players first pro homerun, they will usually ask for the ball back and give the fan a different but autographed one.

6:12 The batter is constantly trying to guess what pitch the pitcher will throw next as well as the location where he will throw it. The pitcher generally wants to avoid throwing the pitch that he thinks the batter is expecting, although very good pitchers are still difficult to hit even when the batter is able to correctly determine what pitch is coming next. The pitch can also be read based on its spin after the pitcher has thrown it, but it is more difficult to make such a quick adjustment.
McCullers, the pitcher, has a very good curveball and is known for throwing it a lot. However, in this game some have speculated that he was moving his glove differently prior to throwing a curveball, which would have allowed the Phillies batters to be ready for a curveball every time he threw it, and that could potentially explain why they were able to hit so many home runs against him.

7:02 its very interesting that you mention the condition of the ball! Pitchers will typicaly be very perticular about getting a new clean ball if they get hit or scuffed. You cant see it in the highlights but in between pitches you can see them sometimes throw the ball away and ask the umpire for a new one.
I love how in cricket the conidtion of the ball is important because a while ago in baseball pitchers would actualy LIKE the ball to have scuffs on it. Back then pitchers would use the scuffs to their advantage because it can allow them to get more spin on the ball, making it move more in the air! But im not quite sure why pitchers dont do this today... The fact that the ball condition is important in cricket is so interesting to me, and I would love to know why and if its a simillar reason.

i love the fact that as a canadian our cultures just about as similar as you can be to british, but we've got these two games that are similar is some ways but completely different in so many, and how common it is for most of us to have a pretty common knowledge of our own game and no idea how the other works. there are a _LOT_ of rules in baseball. i've been around it my entire life and still situations pop up where i have no idea what the rulebook says.

Batters at the professional level almost all have extremely good eyesight. They learn to pick up a tiny bit of information about the spin of the ball based on what they can see of the red seams of the ball doing as it comes out of the pitcher's hand. But really it's all about a long-term cat-and-mouse game between hitters and pitchers; the pitcher trying to fool the hitter and the hitter trying to guess what the pitcher is going to do. Teams gather huge amounts of information about opposing players' tendencies and strategies to try and help with this.

Condition of the ball is part of baseball, but it goes the other way. Pitchers regularly ask the umpire for new balls so that they can keep throwing balls that feel new. MLB games go through a lot of balls.

12:36 The distance from home plate to the wall is usually about 335 feet (102m) at the foul poles, and 400 feet (122m) to center field. At 12:07, you can see _401_ on the wall. That's the distance of the wall (in feet), and that home run went 443 feet! (135m)

There is a rules of baseball video by Ninh that explains the basics of the game. Also if a ball goes into the stands in foul territory or is grounded foul it is a dead ball and will count as a strike on strikes 1 and 2. Baseball is sport all about numbers and statistics. It’s a game that looks to the past when talking about legends but also
Focuses on the current and emerging stars of the game.

85mph is not fast ball pitching. Those are pitches that move, spin, curve left or right, go up or down before they reach the plate. Fast balls going at 95mph-100mph also move in the air by the time they reach the batter, but not as much usually as curve balls, sliders or any type of breaking ball

The condition of the ball is very much a part of the game. Years ago a dirty ball was appreciated by pitchers as it was harder to see. Then a batter was killed by a dirty fast-ball to the scull. Ever since a ball with dirt on it is rejected. You can't see that in the highlights. Each team employees a ""ball boy" that keeps the umpire behind the plate with balls. Umpire puts new balls into the game as needed. There is also the treatment of balls before the game, and the forbidden doctoring of balls by pitchers. ... and FYI it was later learned that Lance McCullers had a different way of lifting his leg for different pitches. By watching his knee the Phillies knew what he was going to throw.

Some fanbases will try to get a fan to throw a home run ball back onto the field if an away player hits it, but today it’s typically not allowed due to player safety. Doesn’t change the score or anything, just more of an act of disrespecting the opposition

    • @thedominator409

One instance a fan threw the ball back and it hit the player as he was running the bases. It’s been treated more seriously since then and normally isn’t allowed

11:09 A batter cannot run if he hits a foul ball, but if a fielder is able to catch the ball anywhere on the field, even if it is a foul ball, then the batter is out.
In a bit of a complicated twist, runners that are already on base can run after a fielder catches a foul ball in the air, but they cannot run on a foul ball otherwise. In rare circumstances, this can lead to funny situations where a fielder is able to catch a foul ball but chooses not to catch it because a runner already on base would be able to run and potentially score.
