  • I really enjoyed watching the highlights of the first game in the 2022 World Series so watched game 2 straight away, will watch more as soon as possible. I'm still getting confused by it all and was surprised by the fumbled catch, does wearing a baseball glove actually make it harder ?????

2:00 lol he’s adding a substance called pine tar to the handle of his bat. It’s a small stick that you rub on that leaves a sticky residue that improves grip, so the bat doesn’t go flying out of your hands when you swing. You can see him toss it to the side when he’s done with it. It’s more of a preference than anything but is used a lot in the league.

10:40 If you look closely, you can see that there's a yellow line running across the wall. If the ball is hit _over_ that line, it's a home run; otherwise, it's in play.

6:35 Baseballs are a lot easier to throw hard and are a lot more susceptible to aerodynamic forces, which means they "move" in the air a lot more, making it difficult to predict where they will land. Pitchers can change their grip on the ball to make it drop in the dirt, or "sweep" right off the plate, tricking the batter into swinging. Alternatively, a ball hit 160 km/h into the air by a batter is going to scream, and could fly either left or right depending on the spin imparted on it.

2:16 he is applying pibe tar to the middle of his bat. Some players use a grip on the wood and some don’t and prefer pibe tar. It is super sticky but cannot go above a certain part of the bat. A lot of batters use it for grip. Can only be used by batters to help grip the bat

  • @EricAKATheBelgianGuy
    @EricAKATheBelgianGuy 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

2:02 - "What was he doing to his bat there?"
I'm assuming he's rubbing it with pine tar, to make it easier to grip. Sometimes, the torque of a player's body can be very strong, and nobody wants the bat flying out of the player's hands. Sandpaper used to be common, because it was said to make the bat smoother, but I'm not sure if it's still used anymore.
Batters are allowed to put pine tar on the bat, but only up to a certain length. Home plate is 18 inches wide (45.7 centimeters), and so you're only allowed to use pine tar up to those 18 inches. Any more than that and the bat is removed from the game, and the batter is usually called out for illegal use of equipment.

3:16 In order to be safe a runner has to be touching the base. If they over shoot it they can be tagged out by the defense touching them with the ball in their glove. Doesn't matter for home plate, because once you touch it you've scored.
Importantly, there is also an exception for 1st base. If you are trying to reach 1st base as the person who just hit the ball, you are allowed to run through it and still be considered safe as long as you don't turn and start running to 2nd. This is because if you just hit the ball you are at a massive disadvantage getting to 1st because you have to completely change your stance from a hitting stance to a running one. If you notice, when players are already on base they often take a "lead" moving a little bit towards the next base so that they can be ready to run there really fast. As the batter you don't have that advantage. If the batter had to worry about slowing down enough to stop exactly on the 1st base it would be even harder to get a single.
Summary: You have to be touching the bag to be safe. If you touch home, you've scored so it doesn't matter. There is an exception where you can run through 1st base as long as you don't start moving towards 2nd.

9:30 In order to prevent the coaches from slowing down the game too much by visiting the pitcher to talk to them, each team is allowed 5 mound visits throughout the game. (The "mound" is the slightly raised part of the field the pitcher stands on.) There are lot of weird exceptions and things with mound visits, but that's the general idea.

you could say that using a glove to catch a ball is harder than using your hands. The reason they use gloves is to be able to catch faster throws thanks to the extra padding. Because the glove isn't apart of your body it is harder to catch with than your hands. And if the person throwing to you makes a bad throw it makes it 100x harder to catch it. Also they might drop easy catches because of the nerves, as they are playing on the biggest stage in the world. Love the vids keep it up

The impression that catching a ball with a glove is easier is wrong, it is a necessity. The exit velocity on batted balls are up to 120mph and balls thrown by infielders to other infielders are in the 85mph-95mph. And of course pitchers throw up to 102+mph. The batted balls and thrown balls (by fielders or pitchers) are never straight, they are moving and spinning. So you have velocity and movement every time a ball is in play.

6:00 you've got to keep in mind that in order for him to force an out at first base his foot has to be touching the base when he catches the ball. and the ball was thrown from over 100' away so it's moving very fast to be thrown there on a flat trajectory. watching an actual baseball game would make the rules and idea behind them far more apparent. the announcers tend to be pretty good at explaining things when it isn't just little 5-10 second snips.

some help with the hitting lingo:
PA: plate appearances; the amount of times a player gets to bat
AB: At Bats; slightly different than PAs , does not count walks, and a few other things.
AVG: Batting average; the percentage out of 1.000 that a batter gets a hit. For instance, if my average is .262, i get a hit 262 times out of 1,000 At Bats. The best players hit around a .300 average
Hits count how many times a player hits the ball and reaches AT LEAST first base (we call that a single).
Extra base hits are when a player gets past first base. (we call those doubles, triples, and home runs).
RBI: Runs Batted In; the amount of times another player scored after you hit the ball. If a player hits a home run with two runners on base, that would be three RBIs because with one swing he scored three runs.

  • @adamkoslin9302

The glove doesn't make it harder - the Phillies had a bunch of players who were known for hitting the ball really hard, but playing poor defense (i.e., not being very good with catching or throwing the ball in the field). They gambled they would be able to just out-hit other teams, and it mostly worked!
And as for what counts as a "strike" - the best way to think of it is that the batter is supposed to get three good chances to hit the ball. These chances can be either on pitches the batsman likes (i.e., pitches the batsman chooses to swing at) or on pitches that are objectively good to hit (i.e., in the "strike zone" - over home plate and between the batsman's armpits and knees) whether or not the batsman swung. If the batsman can't put the ball in play after having three good chances (i.e., strikes), then he's out. On the other hand, if the pitcher throws four pitches outside the "strike zone" that the batsman doesn't swing at (i.e. "balls"), then the batsman is awarded first base. So that's an at-bat for the batsman - 4 balls, 3 strikes, or the ball gets put in play.
Also, a "foul ball" is a ball that's hit outside of the lines going from home plate to first and third base. Batted balls are only playable (and runners can only advance) if they're in the arc between first and third. Gives the fielders a better shot than 360 playing field in cricket. If a batter hits a foul ball, it's counted as a strike (except that a batter can't strike out on a foul ball - awkward exception, I know).

  • @syx3s
    @syx3s ปีที่แล้ว

from home plate there are two lines that make up the baseline and the foul line. home plate to first base, and third base to home plate. those lines carry on to the outfield walls. if the ball is on the outside of those lines it's foul and not in play unless a player is able to catch it, in which case the batter is out. when the ball flies over the outfield wall near the foul poles (a vertical pole where the foul line hits the wall) it can be hard to tell if it was a homerun or a foul ball, which counts as a strike and is out of play.

Cheese, cheddar, or any type of cheese is a nickname for a fastball. The stinkier the cheese the nastier the fastball. The boundary is the yellow line on the outfield wall. It’s often on top of the wall, but sometimes not. So the ball could bounce back into the field, but if it struck above the yellow line it is a home run.

  • @XizorSizhran
    @XizorSizhran ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sorry for the long post...
    OBP - on base percentage
OPS - OBP plus slugging - percentage of the time a player gets on base successfully added to the amount of bases per at-bat a player achieves. Anything over 1.000 is considered elite.
AVG - how many times a player gets on base with a ball not caught or "should have been an out" by a fielder.
ERA - Earned run average, amount of runs allowed for every 9 innings pitched, 3.00 is considered good.
K/9 - number of strikeouts for every 9 innings pitched
Altuve was likely rubbing his bat up with pine tar in the bottom of the first, allowing the bat to be gripped more tightly, giving him a way to hold on.
IP - innings pitched by the pitcher
K/BB - strikeouts per walk - a K occurs when a batter takes or swings at 3 pitches inside of the zone allowed, a walk occurs when 4 pitches are taken outside of said zone. 2/1 is a good ratio, this pitcher is very good at that metric.
WHIP - walks+hits per amount of innings pitched, 1.000 or better is good.
A batter must maintain their footing on the plate to be considered "safe," otherwise the defender may tag them "out."
XBH - extra base hits - amount of times a player has made it to more than one base with one swing of the bat.
The ball must exit the playing field on the fly (i.e. a 6 in cricket) to be a home run. The playing field changes based on the stadium in baseball, but is generally above the yellow line or in the crowd.
A player must have the ball in the glove before the player touches the base in order to record an out.
A catcher's position depends heavily on the pitcher. A ground ball pitcher like Valdez is going to throw the ball low more often than not, so the catcher is going to set his body lower in order to "block" the incoming pitch, preventing it from getting by resulting in a runner advancing his position on the base path.
A pitch is a strike if it crosses between a batter's "numbers" on his jersey and his knees. If a batter swings at a ball, regardless of its position, and does not make contact, that is a strike. Three strikes results in an out. Umpires are human, so they make mistakes on position.
"Looking for the curve" - batter was looking for a curveball, resulting in his swing being late for the "cheese" - a fastball.
Double play - when a defensive team records 2 outs with one ball. Typically, as in this case, a 6-4-3 double play, meaning that the shortstop (player set up between 2nd and 3rd bases) threw a ball that was caught by the 2nd baseman and was then thrown to the player at first base. Each player is assigned a number based on their position within the defense. Pitcher is 1, Catcher is 2, first baseman is 3, second baseman is 4, third baseman is 5, shortstop is 6, left fielder is 7, center fielder is 8, right fielder is 9.
Pitch type is the kind of pitch that was thrown last.
MPH - miles per hour that the last pitch was thrown at
Mound visits - number of times a manager or coach can go talk to the pitcher without removing him from the game.
50/50 total is a lottery system used by many teams to raise money. Winner in the crowd gets 50% of the pot, team gets the rest.
The yellow line is the home run line. Anything above it is considered a home run, but where that line sits is determined by Major League Baseball.
A foul ball is one that exits the legal grounds of play without contacting a legal player or item. In baseball, any ball that exits the field of play without bouncing before it crosses the line between the home plate (where the batter stands) and 1st or 3rd base is considered foul, and is a strike up to the point that a batter accrues 2 strikes. At that point, a foul ball is not counted for a batter or pitcher.
They do call whose ball it's supposed to be, and there is a hierarchy as to who is supposed to have the priority, however when there are close to 45,000 people in the stadium it does get slightly hard to hear someone calling for a catch.
End of the game - Wheeler took the loss, pitched 5 innings and allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (earned) allowed 3 walks, and had 3 strikeouts. Valdez took the win, pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 earned run, walked 3 and struck out 9. Bregman was the best player, getting 1 hit in 4 at-bats with 1 home run and 2 runs batted in.
    Hope this helps!

In baseball is a must to wear glove because first, the exit velocity of the ball off bat in higher than average cricket exit velocity, average exit velocity off bat in baseball is 103 mph (sometimes reach to 115 or even 120+mph), and the ball weight is 5.25 ounces with that velocity is a straight bullet, so yeah, you have to wear a glove of your hands will be fucked. The 3er base or the Shortstop players something throws a bullet of 80 mph (average exit velocity in cricket) to first baseman and that shit hurts, thats why in cricket plays with barehands because the exit velocity of the ball isnt so high like baseball. All that measures that I said is verified for statcast by google.

some help with the pitching lingo:
ERA: Earn Run Average; The amount of "earned runs" (runs that the pitcher is responsible for) that a pitcher gives up per ever 9 innings pitched.
IP: Innings pitched; 0.1 and 0.2 mean that the pitcher recorded either one or two out but did not complete the inning by recording a third out.
WHIP: Walks, Hits, Innings Pitched; a slightly more advanced stat that adds walks and hits and then divides them by innings pitched. it shows how well a pitcher does at keeping runners off base.
k/9- "K" stands for strikeout; The amount of strikeouts a pitcher recorders per 9 innings pitched. The same goes with any other statistic followed by a "/9". For instance "BB/9" means walks per 9 innings because "BB" stands for walks.
Realizing now that you might not know what a walk is...a walk is when a pitcher throws four "balls" (the same as what you described in cricket as "wide") before throwing three strikes or the batter hitting the ball

The glove makes it easier than bare handed, but not fool proof and much easier on some plays, like when the fielder has to reach high or low or far to the right or left with one hand. There are catches made that would not even be possible with bare hands.
The padding plays a role but the real advantage is due to the pocket or webbing. The ball should be caught in in the pocket not in the palm, where it might bounce out.

How a homerun works is that a ball has to be higher than the wall but also must be fair. Fair is to the right of the foul pole (that yellow thing) if it's the left of the field and the left of the foul pole if it's the right of the field. You may have also heard of a ground rule double. That happens if the ball bounces and than goes over the wall. Hope this helps

Technical note: the volume difference between your voice and the game announcers makes this difficult to watch.
Home Run if it goes over the YELLOW LINE CIRCLING THE OUTFIELD WALL/FENCE, which in this case would be into the crowd. Off the wall is just the ball being in play.
A throw to a base where there is a force, such as at first base, if the player at the base fails to catch and have control of the ball, or is not touching the base when he does catch the ball as the runner crosses, the runner is safe.
"Looking for the curve but got the cheese." Batter was expecting a curve ball but the pitcher threw a fastball.
Double play in this case meaning on the play the runner was out at 2nd base because the ball was thrown to the player covering 2nd base before the runner who was at first base got there and the batter running to 1st base was out because the ball was thrown to the player covering first base before the batter was able to touch 1st base.
Bregman's home run was a home run - it bounced off the wall (well) ABOVE the yellow line circling the outfield wall/fence.
Foul ball - ball which is hit which passes OUTSIDE the white lines starting at Home Plate and extend all the way to the right field and left outfield fences. The tall YELLOW polls are the markers for fair and foul for balls which fly that distance out of the field of play - inside the poles - fair, and a home run. To the right of the right field foul pole and to the left of the left field foul poll = foul ball.
Fielders typically call for the fly ball or otherwise might have priority on a fly ball depending on where it's hit. But, 40,000+ fans are also there making a lot of noise and it can be hard sometimes to hear someone yelling that they have a bead on the fly ball.
The Wheeler Philadelphia set of numbers are pitching stats for the game, plus a line on Bregman since he had a home run. It tells who the winning and losing pitchers are, plus a note about Bregman. How many innings the pitchers pitched, how many earned runs they gave up. How many walks the issued, and how may strikeouts they threw. For Bregman (Houston) he got one hit in four at bats. He had a home run. He batted in two runs in the game.

As a baseball fan I like the reaction. So for the ball that went off the wall it is a homerun because there is a certain height that the ball has to go up that wall for it to be a homerun. All all fields are different in size and shape. The foul ball is because it went on the outside the pole. The ball must stay in between each side of the field to be considered in play.

Average is the percentage of at bats that result in a hit (be it a single, double, triple, or a homerun) I.E. a 0.300 avg means he gets a hit 30% of the time (which would be really good)
Also, the types of hits are
    Single: 1 base
    Double: 2 bases
    Triple: 3 bases
Homerun: 4 bases, automatic run scored
WHIP is Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched (IP is also Innings Pitched)
Its and average of how many hits and walks a pitchers allows per inning, and is often a more accurate indication of pitcher skill than ERA (Earned Run Average) which can change drastically from a single bad inning. (ERA is the average of earned runs (runs generated by hits excluding errors and walks))
If you have anymore questions just ask.

The catcher will change their stance throughout the game for different pitches and situations. The type of crouch you are referring to, while it gives the catcher better defensive mobility, it can block the umpire's view of the strikezone and affect the correctness of calls. So more catchers are opting for the one knee down stance you see here, usually when the risk for runners advancing bases on possible wild pitches is minimal.

What you cannot then do is make any motion that could be seen as moving toward 2nd base or you can be tagged out if the 1st baseman has the ball at that point. If you were to see a batter overrun 1st , but beat the throw, usually they will turn away from 2nd base to remove any misinterpretation of a move to 2nd. Also, the error on the throw to 1st was about the throw, not the glove. You don't do two-handed barehand scoops because you'd have to wait for the ball to get closer before catching it. With a glove, you can stretch out and make the catch sooner, giving yourself a better chance of getting the runner out. Also, throws from the left side of the field to the right can be from about 137 to 148 kph, occasionally even faster. Even if you line up the throw and put your hand in the right place to catch it, you'd be likely to either hurt yourself and drop it, or just have it bounce out before you got your hands closed.

The reason that the home run counted even though the ball bounced back into the field is because it went past the wall and the yellow line on top, but just didn't stay there. If it passes that yellow line at all, it's a home run.

6:12 well the baseball(as far as I know) travels much faster than a cricket ball, and it’s really hard to tell where to put your glove to catch it.

It would be interesting to find out, seems the pitching & bowling speeds are roughly similar although from what little I've seen of Baseball it would appear that there's more variation in speed in cricket but that's more because of the variety of different bowling types. I suspect though that the speed off the bat is probably faster in baseball, and how on earth the batters hit the ball at the speed it's pitched at with a baseball bat amazes me!

@@Cleophas-tl7ic On pitching speeds: a major league fastball travels at about 90-100 mph; the average is around 92 or 93, fastest recorded is 106. A curveball is typically between 75 and 80 mph. Major league pitchers will deliver both types of pitch with the same or almost the same motion, which is why the batter may be "expecting the curve but getting the cheese." There's also a pitch called the knuckleball that goes at only 60-70 mph but has completely unpredictable tumbling movement in flight because it's thrown with almost no spin. It's rarely seen these days.
Meanwhile, major league caliber fielders throw the ball almost as hard as pitchers. A top third baseman is able to make the throw across to first base at around 95 mph; the middle infielders (shortstop and second base) around 90, although they only throw that hard if necessary to make the out. This is a partial explanation for why players other than the catcher wear gloves; they're catching balls at nearly the same speed as the catcher or a cricket wicket-keeper.

@@Cleophas-tl7icOn plays where the ball is in the air whole time, pro ball players almost always make the catch, provided they can get to it easily. Most of the trouble comes when the ball bounces just in front of them (referred to as a short hop, which is what the first baseman had to deal with when he dropped the throw) because it’s hard to tell exactly where it will go and you’re trying to catch it immediately after it changes direction.

I have been a baseball fan since 2005 and don't understand what WHIP represents, like how is that stat usefull, or some of the sabermetric stats such as OPS+

      I’ll help with WHIP:
Walks plus Hits per Innings Pitch.
It’s designed to tell you how many baserunners a pitcher allows. For instance, a high WHIP and a low ERA probably can’t be sustained, though it’s theoretically possible. I think it leaves out hit batters, but it shouldn’t. Then, I guess, it would be WHHBIP
