    I can’t believe no one in the comments said this…..
    But, 16:00, yes, a no hitter in the World Series is extremely significant and rare. This is the second no hitter in World Series history.
    A no hitter is exactly what it sounds like - when your pitching staff allows no hits against the other team. Before this game, there were only 2 no hitters in the postseason EVER - in a sport that’s been played for 150 years. The first was in the 1956 World Series. The second was in the 2010 ALDS - ironically, thrown by legendary Phillies pitcher Roy halladay.
    So, this was the 3rd no hitter in postseason history, and the 2nd ever in the World Series. What you’re watching from the Houston pitching staff is all-time historic stuff. Everyone in the comments is doing you a disservice by not mentioning this. It’s the only thing game 4 of the 2022 World Series will be remembered for.

      It was the 2010 NLDS against the Reds. It was Roy’s first game pitching the postseason and his first year with the Phillies. Score was Reds 0 @ Phillies 1
      I’m not a fan of a pitching duel (kinda boring) but it was a really fast game and Roy only allowed 1 walk! He also had his Perfect game a couple months earlier in Miami!

    AYE! The video I was waiting for.
    This game is the second time in baseball history there was ever a "no-hitter", where the opposing team cannot get a single hit the entire game. To understand how impressive this is: The starting pitcher responsible was a 25 year old out of the Dominican Republic, who was converted into a pitcher at 17 after failing as an outfielder. As far as prospects go, he was worthless; the Astros signed him for 10,000 dollars anyway, and he developed into one of the best pitchers in the game. This is unprecedented. At such a young age, too, being able to be basically a nobody can then go into the WORLD SERIES and no-hit one of the deadliest lineups is surely a moment that will not be forgotten by history.
    Your interest and curiosity for this game, especially as as a Brit, is unbelievable. You've come full circle, actually. Baseball was invented in England and was taken to America, where it would thrive while it was forgotten in England. Anyway, thank you for these videos. They are amazing.

    A no-hitter is very special and very rare. In the ~150 years of baseball, there have only been ~316 no-hitters. Of those, maybe 16 of them were combined no-hitters.. meaning, it wasn't done by just 1 pitcher. In this case, it was Javier, Montero, Abreau and Pressley who all didn't give up any hits to the Phillies. What made it even more rare and special is that this is only the 2nd no-hitter ever thrown in a World Series. What a night!

    Where he was "chased off of the plate," he was out by swinging and missing counting as a strike - in this case the 3rd strike. Side note, while a foul ball is counted as a strike, a foul ball cannot be the 3rd strike. A foul ball after two strikes is still counted as a strike thrown by the pitcher but it is not a strike against the batter batting.
    Back to back K's is back to back strike outs. A strike out is colloquially called a "K" and is a shorthand for anyone keeping a scorecard.
    When a batter is hit by a pitch they get to go to first base. It's the equivalent of a "walk" but a walk itself is the result of an at bat which had four balls (non strikes) thrown and not swung on or hit the batter.
    Batters also use their bats to move the ball around, but it is a lot less exacting than cricket and basically rests on if the batter gets a pitch he can anticipate and see where it's going to cross where he can get a bat on it. Batters practice hitting into the "hole" or spaces between the fielders, down the line, as well as hitting over their reach and into the gaps between outfielders.
    A fly ball is also called a pop fly. It is a high arcing ball, usually giving the outfield ample time to intercept and catch, which might leave the ballpark but usually doesn't.
    A No Hitter is where a pitcher or the pitching staff get 27 outs without the opposing team getting on base with a hit. Not a single Philadelphia Philly was able to swing the bat, hit the ball, and make it to first base without the ball being caught or without being called out at first when the fielded ball was thrown to whoever was covering 1st base.
    A No Hitter is a comparatively rare but not unheard of game result. This was only the 2nd No Hitter in a World Series game in Major League history, though this was a Combined No Hitter because multiple pitchers each in their stints pitching gave up no hits whereas the previous No Hitter in a World Series, all 27 outs were thrown by one pitcher.
    A No Hitter is a pretty big deal because they are so rare. It's usually a combination of dominant pitching and airtight fielding, and the opposing team just having a really bad day at the plate, including X factor bad luck like borderline umpire calls.

    By the way, a "K" is short-hand for strikeout. A "backwards" K is a strikeout-looking, where they simply watch strike-three as the ball hits the strikezone. Any time you swing, it's a strike, so if you swing with two strikes and miss, you strike out.

    A Curveball is thrown by spinning the baseball as it is released from the hand. If you want to know exactly how, there are plenty of tutorials. Generally, the more the ball spins, the more it curves.
    An example of a good curveball is at 7:17. At first, the ball appears to be headed for the strike zone, so the batter swings. But the ball curves away from the batter (and downward!) out of his reach.

    16:00 there are two major individual single game accomplishments for a pitcher. a no-hitter and a perfect game.
    a no hitter means that the pitcher(s) did not allow a hit the entire game, but they did allow a runner to reach base (ie. walks, hit batter, or fielding error).
    a perfect game means that the pitcher got got out all 27 batters he faced. no hits, walks, or errors, allowed. this has only been done about 25 times or so in over 100 years of baseball.
    no hitters are relatively common i would say theres at least one almost every season. perfect games are obviously way more rare.

      No hitters are “relatively” common in the regular season - although still quite rare statistically - but they’re extremely rare in the postseason. This is the third time it’s ever happened in 150 years.

  • @Josh-ut4wv
    @Josh-ut4wv ปีที่แล้ว

    No hitters a very uncommon as most season you might get a few which makes sense for a 162 game regular season for each teams. But basically what that is one team doesn't get a single hit for the game now there are way to get runs by getting walk and sac flys as they dont count as hits and it a great achievement. There have only been 3 post season No hitters with 2 being in the world series. There are also several rare types of no hitters. The loss no hitter and the perfect game. So yes you can lose but still have a no hitter and that has only happened a few times. The perfect game is basically a no hitter but no errors, wild pitches, or walks which are insanely rare the last one was about 10 years ago.

    8:03 As the ball flies through the air, it spins, and this "spin" can actually cause the ball to move in the direction it is spinning. This is called the magnus effect. For a curveball, instead of making the ball spin "up" (backspin) as with the fastball, the pitcher changes his grip so that the ball flies out of his hand spinning downward, causing it to literally dive into the ground due to the aerodynamic forces.

    • @Cleophas-tl7ic
      @Cleophas-tl7ic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I wondered how the pitcher could make it curve, that makes a lot of sense, I guess a good batter will try to see how the pitcher is gripping the ball when it's pitched although that must be hard at the speed the ball is pitched.

    I’ve heard a while back that the average lifespan of a Major League Baseball is 7 pitches. Also, scuffing a baseball is illegal. In baseball so many things factor in pitch type, the laces are used as leverage to generate spin, arm angle and velocity can affect how well a ball moves. Then there’s guys that throw a knuckleball, which basically doesn’t spin at all and the air makes the ball kinda flutter in all directions.

      And how to throw a curveball is pretty difficult to explain via text but I'll try my best. On the baseball, if you imagine it spinning on an axis on its side kinda like the planet Uranus and then place your finger at the "equator" as it spins, you'll notice your finger cross the seams a certain number of times before you you return back to the starting point.
      Sounds like a lot but it's important.
      Anyways, you'll notice on the baseball that there's a bit of a horseshoe shape in the seams. What you want to do is take your first two fingers and place them inside the horseshoe on the side furthest away from you. Getting a good feel of the seams along your middle finger. As you throw, you'll snap the ball over your fingers, imparting a forward spin on the ball. Because you're presenting all 4 seams to the relative wind, you get an exaggerated effect. Since the top half of the ball is rotating into the wind and the bottom half is rotating with the wind, the top half is creating more drag and will make the ball drop very sharply provided that you gave it enough spin.
      This is the basic principle behind all kinds of pitches. There are all manner of ways to get a call to break in the direction you want to. The curveball explanation I gave is the most standard. The main point is getting the proper spin axis and you can get it to break anywhere you want it to.

    In the US, the term bandwagon fan is typically used for a fan that likes or supports a team when they win and could care less about them when they lose.
    A good example of this would be the Houston from 2011 to 2013, the team averaged 100 loses in a season and a number of Texans began to support the Texas Rangers, a state rival of the Astros, because at the time, they had been in two back to back World Series.
