Excellent video!! Loved the details you went into. Really helped me learn more than I already knew about Disk Utility. May I also suggest making a second video about solving "Media Kit Reports not enough space...". There are so many people (like myself) who googled that and then reformatted the drive using Terminal (a drive that came in NTFS) into Mac OS Extended. It's way more stressful and scary for most to use Terminal. And your simple View > Show All Devices (and then clicking the "parent") is SUCH AN EASY fix. Anyway, hope that helps. I checked the keyword volume and it should be a good video that'll not only help thousands of people, but should drive some views to your channel too. Keep up the great work :)

If I only knew that before I transferred everything on my 10 TB HDD, now I’ll have to buy another HDD just to make it encrypted. I have a question though i need to have it as an ExFat format so I could also use it in my windows laptop. How could I make that encrypted since it does not appear as an option there? great video, one question: if i have my time machine backup on and encrypted external hard drive does that works well? or would you recommend to have the Time Machine copy encrypted itself? i was thinking to have it on the encrypted external hard drive because my main photo library its on the external hard drive so its not getting back-up on time machine but i want it secure.
wonderful - hung during mounting. Data loss isn't the problem - it's the fact that this process initiates a an erase of mounting so if you do get hung, you are caught in limbo unable to mount again for the same reason it got hung in the first place. One possibility is this just means the entire device had a problem and this identified it.

Here is a good one. I was able to password protect the drive on my Macbook pro. When I take that same disk and put it on my ipad pro the ipad opens the drive without a password. How can this be so ????
I tried to use time machine to do a backup of my Mac onto an external hard drive(brand new, 2TB, no data saved on it yet) and clicked the button asking me if I wanted my data encrypted and now it’s stuck on “encryption in progress”. It has been like that for 6 hours. What do I do? Can I pause the encryption? Can I turn off my computer and start again?
This is gonna be a stupid question. So I have an encrypted portable hard drive that has all of my work on it. Problem is my mac wasn't showing it on the desktop as being mounted for some reason. So I tried to mount it but so far nothings happening and I have all of my work stored on this thing for uni? Have you got any tips on what I could do?

Found the answer:
After clicking Erase, when the new window pops up, it is important to change the scheme to “GUID Partition Map” first. The default scheme was “Master Boot Record” on my computer. Under that scheme, “APFS (encrypted)” was not available. The encrypted format is only available under the scheme “GUID Partition Map”.

When you hit erase the drop down panel has - Name, Format and Scheme - under Scheme you need to select GUID Partition Map. That should work!?
Found the answer:

Then use APFS. Unless you really need to be using it on older versions of MAC OS.

Very confusing with too may options. I don't want to format or erase the contents of my drive, all I want to do is add a password to a folder. I need to lend my drive to someone and I have private files I need to secure. It seems it can't be done.

I had the same problem. Be sure to choose "View all devices" even though you think your USB is available for option.

Im currently running the latest mac mojave but there are few options and none of them with encrypted format? Can anyone please help? Maybe be because external hard drive itself? Mine wd passport. I tried most safe format 7x and it took me 24hours x 3 days nonstop 😄 crazy long and hard gets hot too
It's because you are choosing the volume and not the device (they have the same name). Go to Visualisation, and choose "Show all the devices", and then on the left panel chose the "top" one of the probably two of the same name

Cathy Ramirez then the encryption wont be as safe as it should. Mac and pc would never ever let you or anyone else do that. Prob hackers would allow u and make it available. Common sense...

DustyCowdog make sure you choose the scheme (guid partition map) for first and all the options in format will appear. I had the same issue.
