      Right clicking and encrypting won't delete everything, it might just take a long time to encrypt everything. Make sure you have a backup of everything though (which if it's that important you should anyway) as computers can fail and you don't want to loose everything.

    I split (partition) my external SSD drive - 1/2 TimeMachine and 1/2 personal use.
    Can I erase and encrypt just my personal half as explained above or it should get interrupted by the partition?

    • @TerryLivesey
      @TerryLivesey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching 😊 You can erase a partition and select to have it encrypted and this will only effect this partition. I quite often do this on my drives and keep a small 'transfer' partition which is FAT32 which can then be used on any system for transferring files.

      No, you need to enter the password in the box and tick that option for it to be recorded in the keychain. You could always load 'Keychain access' app and search through it incase you did say it at some point and for some reason it's not registering now.

    Nice video. Question--is it overkill to encrypt a partition with APFS encrypted and then back up an encrypted Time Machine to that same partition?

    • @TerryLivesey
      @TerryLivesey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I would say yes! Create an APFS partition which isn't encrypted or at least have it so your tim machine isn't encrypted. As all you are doing is double encrypting everything which takes time. That is unless you have the secrets to the universe which you never want anyone to find 🤔

    • @TerryLivesey
      @TerryLivesey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as it's in the correct file system already then you can just right click and encrypt. If the encrypt isn't there then it's probably in fat32 or something else and that is not compatible.

      Hey Thomas, not true. I have the latest M1 Mac Pro and have access to all the driver formats. It might be that you are trying to ‘erase’ the container which will only give you the option of APFS as it’s already in an APFS format. Encryption still works on non SSD drives as well. If you format the drive with APFS and encrypt it, it can be opened in files on IOS14 or iPadOS14. If it’s encrypted using HFS then no. You have to set the drive up from a mac in the first place though.

    Hey Terry, thank you for the video. I followed your second method for a 2T WD hard drive and successfully inputted my password, set up the encryption etc. But now the hard-drive (APFS Encrypted) won't mount and its greyed out in disk utility. It's been like this overnight. Is this normal ie it's still encrypting or do you know if something's gone wrong?

    • @TerryLivesey
      @TerryLivesey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When it's encrypting you can still access the drive. It initially de-mounts the drive when it goes to format it. You can manually click the mount button in the disk utility, otherwise eject and re-attach. The system cannot do anything (apart from initialise the disk) with the drive (encrypt etc) whilst it is de-mounted. I've had that happen before on a format and unplugging the drive and reconnecting works. Hope thats help and let me know how you got on. 👍🏻

    Do you know how to encrypt an external WD hard drive that is formatted and partitioned to use with Mac and Windows by chance? I've read about veracrypt but it seems a little complex and I have to download software on every device I wish to open my drive on. Is there a way to encrypt it like you did in the video while being able to still use it on both systems?

    • @TerryLivesey
      @TerryLivesey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That way is purely Mac. You are best off using the WD encryption software which works with most of their drives as this does it on a hardware level and is mac and win compatible. If you have one of the drives that doesn't do that then you are going to need third party software which is installed on all computers as you said or go and buy a WD that supports password security.

      Although APFS was designed for SSD I have used it on external hard drives for the reason of the flexible partition creation and automatic resizing which is great. If you intend on using the HD on older OS's then it's not compatible and if you just need one single partition then I would use the old system. Hope that helps.

    Just yesterday, I formatted my sandisk ssd Apfs and rather than creating a partition I created volumes which was incredibly handy, not having to specifically decide an allowance of storage offer each partitio.
    I have installed many gb of data on there for music plugins which I I don't want to risk losing at I've used the download license code. If I encrypt the device, creating a password of my choice, by simply right clicking and selecting encrpyt as you did, will this effect/wipe the drive ? Or will it retain all the information and simply just apply a password? I'm hoping the for the later!
    Thanks!

    • @TerryLivesey

      Great question - choosing it from the menu and choosing encrypt will just encrypt the current volume. The only way to wipe the volume (in one go) is to format it from disc manager (or similar third party app). You will also find that if a destructive operation is going to occur Apple will tell you and warn you. Now that being said, I never alter anything on a volume without having a backup as things can happen even if they are not meant to - if I'm going to cry if I loose my data, then I back up 😜

I know from encrypting the drive a couple of years ago, that it takes a long time. But it seems the decrypting seems stuck at 90%. @@TerryLivesey I found it. There is a drop-down in the Disk Utility where you can select Show all, and there I could go in and select the highest option and delete the ssd again, so the MacBook can select it to install the OS. It’s been a few years since I messed around with Macs, and this option was not shown in all yt videos, but found it accidentally in one and decided to try it.

      Hmmm I will have to check that later in the week as the latest os is still reading all my encrypted disks and they haven't changed the file system on the new version so it shouldn't have changed. I'll get back to you 👍

      Just tried on Monterey 12.0.1 and all works as before. Make sure you have it set to 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and GUID Partition Map. Then you can right click on it and encrypt. Hope that helps.
