  • Description: Part 1 2002 Caravan Clock Spring Change
    For part 2 see: • 2001 to 2005 Caravan C...
    Hi You Tubers; this video is how I fixed my 2002 Grand Caravan Intermittent/mostly constant dash Airbag Light. Most of the time it was on but occasionally it would go out when I was turning the steering wheel. This is a sure sign that either the clock spring was bad or the wiring in the steering wheel was bad.
    This procedure works on the following vehicles:
    2001 to 2005 Dodge Caravans and the Chrysler Town & Country’s
    or the 2001 to 2003 Plymouth Voyager minivans, per Dorman’s part listing.
    As always when working on vehicles: SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!
    I say this because I cannot control the tools or methods that you may use to accomplish your tasks, so if you do this procedure you do it at your own risk to yourself or those who may come into contact with your vehicle after you perform any maintenance.
    This has worked well for me in the past, I’m not a professional mechanic I do this out of necessity to keep my vehicles running safely and within a budget I feel comfortable with.
    The
    Tools I used are:
    1. 10mm Combination Wrench to remove the Negative Battery Terminal Cable.
    2. 14mm Combination Wrench to turn the Wheel Puller stud.
    3. Harmonic or Steering Wheel Puller Set.
    4. ½” Drive 21mm Deep Socket to pull the Steering Wheel Nut, or a 14mm if 2005 and later.
    5. ½” Drive Ratchet.
    6. 6” #2 Phillips Screw Driver to pull the Steering Column Covers.
    7. 2 inches of 1/2” wide masking tape to hold the Steering Column Cover screws on the screw driver tip when I went to put them back in.
    8. ¼” Drive 10mm Socket, 3” extension and Ratchet to remove the Airbag.
    Part used:
    - Dorman Clock Spring P/N: 525-101
    It can be found on eBay or amazon for about $35.00 as of this posting.
    The procedure with take about an hour to an hour and a half if you’ve never done it before.
    Thanks for watching. Please give it a thumbs up if it helped or you learned something. If you want to help my channel please subscribe.
    Best Wishes n Blessing folks, Keith.

    Did it. Thank you also for those with cruise control, there's another connector at the top and you have to reach in with a screwdriver in between the cover and the hub of the wheel and press down and it will pop out without destroying the connector

      Thanks Robert your welcome. Glad all worked out fine for you. If you still have problems sometimes the sensor pigtail wires on the wheels goes bad. They're pretty cheap to replace and it's really straight forward. If you still have problems then you'll probably have to take it to a professional mechanic or do a lot of research. Anyways thanks the for nice comment.

    Thanks so much for this video. You walked me through every step, and the problem is fixed!! you're the man!! One thing though, the center bolt on my 2005 Gd Caravan was only a 14mm, not 21 mm. Cheers!

    Keith: We had to change the clock spring in our 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Touring Van last Tuesday. We watched a different video first, and to be honest, the guy was clueless. We then found your video--thankfully.
    So, we wanted to write to you and sincerely thank you. We watched your video the night before, and then again on Tuesday morning. Monday evening we went to Home Depot to get 3 small items related to that job. It took us less than 45 minutes Tuesday morning from start to cleaned up and back inside.
    Thank you Keith--You Rock!
    Wish your items needed lists were all on the same page...😜

      Thanks DirtySouth, Glad to help. That's the best comment yet for this video, I'll make it my top comment. Sorry about the Things needed being on two pages. I usually gather all the things needed and start putting them on video right before I do the job. Sometimes during the job I end up using another tool that I forget to include, so have to add it later, more as an after thought. I've started doing things a little different on some of my later videos. I do the job and then film or write the things needed. Thanks again for the really nice comment and thanks for watching and I was glad to help. PS Really nice "Acoustic Hour, loved it".

      Keith Noneya Yeah, we almost had to go back to the store for the other large socket, but we happened to have the next size up in US and it worked--both to get it the nut off and to put it back on again! We were so thankful that that worked out...
      Happy you like our Acoustic Lunch Hour (not sure which episode you watched). We have over a hundred I believe? We will someday get them all back up again on DirtySouthTV.com.
      Again, thank you SO much for your absolutely fantastic video tutorial. It saved us over $200.00 in parts and labor. We had under $50.00 including part, tools we didn't already have, and sales tax.

      Mine was intermittent when I turned the steering wheel so it was easy for me to figure out. I would check the forums on how to diagnose that problem. If not you might have to take it to the dealer.
      Sorry I can't help you on this one as I don't have the diagnostic tools or experience on that problem.
      If you figure it out please drop me a comment and let us all know how you solved it. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    That's a great suggestion. I will try it. I suspect when I changed the front right wheel hub I may have put too much dialectic grease on the ABS connector. Thanks!

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That shouldn't cause your problem, however if you don't get it on straight that would cause it to go intermittent or not sense at all. I work in the electronics field and no amount of grease will cause that problem. So just pull the tire off and then unbolt the sensor and check it for damage then put it back on if all is fine. You could also use a camera to check the alignment before you remove it. The pig tails are not that expensive so if it damaged just replace it. Hope that helps. Keith

      Thanks Doug. I appreciate it. Oh and Back at Ya. Nice Guitar. I have a Gibson that mostly sits in the closet. Just don't have the time for it. I have a pretty cool story about it too. Christmas eve well before Katrina I had some neighbors, John and Sheryl, who were close friends with Clarence Gatemouth Brown. His black Cadillac broke down in front of my house, the headlight flopped over and he was going to drive at night with only one light. He was working on it next to my mail box. So I went out to see what was going on and help this old guy fix his car. I had to mount a piece of metal and used some sheet metal screws to temporarily fix it, but it worked. He offered to pay me but I declined, saying just do someone else a favor in need. Not knowing who he was I asked him his name, he told me and I said that's a very unusual name sir. He laughed and said you never heard of me? I said no, should I have? He said you don't follow blues or jazz do you? No I don't, what does that have to do with anything. He laughed and said well I play a little. Oh! Are you any good Mr. Brown? He laughed and said well some say I am, and I just finished a tour in Europe. Well sir if you're that famous may my step dad may know of you. They came out and greeted him and said they were very familiar with his work. Again Mr. Brown offered to pay me. I said well I play a little would you play a few songs for me on my guitar in my living room. He said I'd be happy to sir. His blonde female friend sat on our couch and Mr. Brown played my Gibson guitar for a mini concert right there in my living room. Thinking back I wish I had had him sign it and taken a picture of him with us to prove it. About the only one who could prove it now would be his female friend and if anyone inspected the drivers headlight assembly to see if the patch is still there. So that's my story and i'm sticking to it. Best Wishes and Blessings Keith

      Well, that is quite a story. And I believe you. Gatemouth is iconic in the southern jazz and blues and bluegrass circles. Did you know he is one of the fastest fiddlers on the face of the earth? He is also an extremely accomplished guitar player with a school of finger pickin' all his own. And people have said he is one of the most humble and down to earth musicians one could ever meet. That experience was one I am sure you will never forget. Thank you for sharing it. That was quite a thrill for you I'm sure. What is the model of your Gibson?
      I think I told you your video was actually to help me replace my cruise switch. It went very well. The cruise was working just great. I have a 2009 T&C Limited. Yesterday the track control light, BAS ,ESP light went on in the dash and now the cruise stop working. It happened when I was pulling over on the expressway to let my wife drive. Before we stopped, she said no you drive. So I sped back up onto the highway and that's when it happened. Those lights went on and cruise stopped working. No this morning I just went out to check. Now the cruise light will go on but those other lights are still on. lol Maybe I need a decoder?

      If you go to AutoZone or some other parts chain they will read the codes for free. Also you can put the car in park and turn the ignition key on and off three times, WITHOUT starting the car and it will flash most codes on the dash for you in the mileage indicator. When you do it use a video camera or phone to record it so you can review them later. You can find the codes on line or in a Hanes/Chiltons Maintenance manual that you can buy at any parts store or on line. They run around 25-30 bucks new and around 15-18 used. However most of the time if it's an option on the vehicle the codes won't show up for optioned items. The other item that can cause it is the Clock Spring as all the steering wheel control wires go through it. The clock spring is the most common cause for your problem. If you used the tape method on the screws sometimes the tape can get in the way, use a flat head screwdriver in the hole to scrape the tape off or use some long needle nose pliers or forceps to twist and pull it off. Best Wishes n Blessings Keith.

    A lifetime recall for my 1996 Voyager and perhaps all Gen 3 minivans (1996-2000). Check on the web, since might be a free fix at the closest dealer.
    I was in-there to fix a clunking sound when turning which I thought was a bad bearing or perhaps the steering lock (stopped working), so thought I would be going in deep, but didn't even have to even pull off the steering wheel, just removed the airbag/horn. Turned out that weight (you term "bracket") had broken free of the 3 rubber supports, probably from a recent accident. Just took it out. My guess it is for anti-vibration and not essential.

    Was wondering if you could share where you purchased the clock spring and airbag; Ebay or Auto parts store? I'm a little concerned that the parts I buy on Ebay might be faulty or pulled from another car..? Was wondering what you think? Thanks!

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bossa, the part was purchased New off eBay. The seller has to list the condition as New, Used or Seller Refurbished. So just look what condition the part is in before you purchase it. The airbag was already on the van I just re-used it. Check with a wrecking yard or a parts store for a replacement Airbag if you need one. I listed the price in the description "SHOW MORE" just below the video. Hope that helps, Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    The turn signal automatically turning off on my Caravan is also related to this clock spring, so I am told. Is that right? Or is there another part under it that controls that? At 11:12, right before you put the new one on, you make reference to the white piece on the back of the new part lining up properly. Is that what interacts with the turn signal to disengage it after you make a turn? Great video, very easy to follow.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's turning off all by itself but working it's probably the turn signal switch not the clock spring. You can get them off eBay. Here's one for my 2002 Grand Caravan. www.ebay.com/i/272733721285?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=272733721285&targetid=541454147972&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9025108&poi=&campaignid=6470552628&mkgroupid=81274342767&rlsatarget=aud-622524042478:pla-541454147972&abcId=1139336&merchantid=114606094&gclid=CjwKCAjwk93rBRBLEiwAcMapUSkbxNXerQ5YqZxmG0M7E4raikRXZlIPmqowU9T0pYXph56pyljMcxoCAAsQAvD_BwE Just do a search you'll find it. Replaced Clockspring but airbag light remains on. Are you aware of any other common problem that would cause the light to be on?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an Airbag specialist, but there are a few things that can cause it.
      1. The front wheels weren't straight when the clock spring was installed, and it internally broke when the wheel was turned.
      2. The wiring harness in the steering column is bad.
      3. The Airbag Computer is defective.
      4. The Airbag is defective.
      There is an airbag recall on most Dodge vehicles. Check to see if you're vehicle is on the list. If it is you may get it fixed for free. Hope that helps steer you in the right direction. Don't forget to check the forums too i'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened. Sorry I couldn't help more. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

    Is there any other method for removing the steering wheel or do you need to purchase the steering wheeler puller?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to my knowledge. I suppose if you put some bolts it the tow holes and them used a cheap puller to grab the bolt heads you might get lucky. However the puller is pretty cheap to buy and you could always sell it to get some of your money back. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith noneya

    Is the clock spring the reason my horn has stopped working ?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  ปีที่แล้ว

      The clock spring is the switch in the system and any part of the system that goes bad can cause your horn not to work. The 1st step is to check the fuses, most fuse box are marked on the cover as to which fuse controls what. With that being said the most likely cause of a horn not working is the fuse or the Clock Spring. You can get a Haynes manual for your vehicle year and check the fuses and wires. Be careful when playing around the Air Bag though they can be dangerous if they go off. So fallow any instructions in the manual if you decide to test it with a meter or replace it. Should you choose to test it without disconnecting it know what you're doing and as a precaution I would disconnect the battery and always stand to the side of the AirBag when testing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

      I used an extension 2" mirror, turned the steering wheel like you said and used a short wide craftsman screwdriver to twist the tabs off. It went very well. Thank you for the video, it saved me a lot of money. I needed to changed the cruise switch on my 2009....piece of cake thanks to you. 34 dollars at O'Rielly's. Is this the same method on a Sebring?

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be the same for most Dodge or Chrysler vehicles. I would give it a good once over before trying it. As always it's best to purchase the Haynes, Chilton's or factory service manual to be sure. Also make sure the battery has been disconnected at least 30 minutes prior to starting the procedure. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    I hope you see and comment on this. I have a 2003 DC sport and for some time now my cruise control will just drop out. I'll be on the highway and randomly it will just stop, but the indicator will still be on, but when I set it again a few seconds later it will drop out again then the indicator will be off and I cant set it again until I shut the engine off and start it back up again but the problem will start sooner. I read that the clock spring may be at fault but I'm not sure. I really dont trusts the mechs we have here and I dont want to go in blind and get duped.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep the clock spring can cause it. Also the switches on the steering wheel can get wet and corroded. Getting duped is part of the process at times, unfortunately. You may try one out of a car in the junk yard if you don't want to buy a new one. Also if your familiar with a test meter you can ohm out the wires while you turn the steering wheel. Also I'm not totally sure but the Body Control Module or ECM may have something to do with it if it's not the Clockspring.
      Mine works fine so I haven't worked on the cruise control yet. Get a book for your car if you don't and do some research. Most of back yard mechanics is research and trial and error. Feel free to ask more questions. I answer all questions to the best of my abilities within reason of course. I check my channel several times a day. Hope that gives you some ideas Malik. Hi Kalyan, most of the manufactures do it the same way.
      If you get the service manual it will tell you what vehicles use the same system/equipment. For instance when I picked up a copy of the maintenance manual for my Caravan it covered Town & Country and another van that escapes me right now. So find out what related vehicles are covered for your year and look up an airbag or clock spring video and that should get you the procedure you need. Hope that helps you. Best Wishes & Blessings. What happened, Politics! Before Trump took office the Demoncrats extended the amount of time a person can claim Unemployment, raised Unemployment money people received and at the same time they raised Corporate Taxes, saying "They need to pay their fair share", then raised the cost of workers by raising the minimum wage. Then Covid Pandemic hit right after Trump got into office. Public and professionals in the medical field plus Demoncrats said Trump should close businesses to stop the spread forced him to declare a Pandemic and close businesses. Then after he did this they blamed him for the economy for closing those businesses. So all this crap created a work force that was very expensive, a shortage of goods and a shortage of workers because people who were on unemployment benefits would actually loose money by going to work, so these new policies paid them to stay home. That created a shortage of goods and the cost to produce those goods went up, to compensate businesses had to pay higher wages to get people off the coach. So as you know, IF there's a shortage of what everyone wants the price goes up. Not to mention the price of Diesel went up and that increased the cost of shipping, and the stores in order to keep costs down wouldn't increase the shipping costs the truckers needed to offset the new Democrat Fuel costs. That caused a shortage of truckers which compounded the problem, remember all those shipping container ships off the coast of California waiting for the docks to empty so they could off load? You gotta love Demoncrats in their raising Taxes on Businesses so they could "Pay their Fair share BS". All it does is force businesses to cut production raise the price of everything to compensate, thereby Politicians collect more tax revenue to line their political pockets. The bigger business who are friends with these politicians can put the little guys out of business while increasing their business when the smoke clears. So what happened Politicians manipulating economics to line their pockets with campaign funds, and kick backs from big businesses and inside trading on the Stock Market. Well that's what happened Politician! Buy your parts on eBay, Amazon or go to the wrecking yard and get a used one. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
