Tech chasing is character dependent, but generally you looking to cover 3 out of the 4 tech options, including mis-techs. This make it easier to gather information on what the opponent likes doing, and can put a choke on what they “should” do. You can do hard reads after you do your option coverage a few times if you have a grasp of what the opponent wants to do. Some option coverages you can do (keep in mind this is character dependent) is Down Smash (Bowser’s and Lucina’s are excellent at this), and most Dash Attacks (Ike’s and Wolf’s are some notable ones). Here’s a video on how to Tech Trap. th-cam.com/video/MTUtF103Lz8/w-d-xo.html
Can you name any of your specific problems with teching? For instance when you see an opponent miss a tech, are you already dashing towards them or do you go "oh shit" at the last minute? Do you actively dash towards them and then miss your punish? If nothing else, learn to punish missed techs first then worry about the tech options since generally those are harder to punish. Personally I would at least learn to punish missed techs with a jab lock before worrying about anything else since you can get a smash attack and a stock out of it.
PapaFetch I don’t know how much frame advantage you have for roll away and in or if it’s different for each character. I also need to explore my characters’ options for each option.
@@mzisaperson7925 What you want to do is read their options and then adapt based on what they do the most, if they get up attack once, they're probably gonna do the same again. A few things are common, for example, people almost always roll away from ledge because they might be DIing a move or wanna get back to center stage. Once you read, learn your punish options. Here's a simple flowchart. This doesn't work flawlessly and definitely is more effective with some character than others, but its a good foundation... Miss Tech: -Roll Away: Dash Attack or Pivot Cancel F Tilt -Roll In: Either Wait in Place and Punish when they roll to you or do a short hop and punish with aerial. If they roll in a lot and you read it, charge a smash attack as it can get you a great punish. Get Up Attack: GG Boy. Jokes aside, run up to them, then just shield and punish, it's hella laggy. -Neutral: Snuff out with a dash attack or tilt. Tech: -Roll Away: Dash Attack -Roll In: Pivot Grab or Stand Still Tilt -Tech In Place: Dash Attack or Landing Aerial
Banana boy, I hope you're doing well. I still go back to your videos to review fundamentals, and suggest them to kids I coach. Just wanted to say thank you.
You know it’s funny I just got done watching I hope with your videos yesterday on how to get better LOL love you man keep the video up man your videos are doing definitely worth my time
i got good at smash because of you bananaboy i got all my friends onto your videos. they didnt respect my game and now i can beat people way better than them with my little mac. thank you for every video
In a ton of these videos, you've always mentioned mindsets, but I don't recall you making a video on your mindset for smash. I think it'd be a really cool idea! I know that it's different on everyone, but this is something that many people struggle with, and it definitely serves as a huge roadblock in the path to improve greatly, which is a major theme for these videos. It'd be amazing if there were a video on the best mindset to approach things with. In fact, your mindset determines whether you can do these things that you demonstrate in your videos. Personally, this is my own greatest roadblock, so it'd be amazing if you could cover this.
12:57: when you talk about Bowser's fair to side b frame trap, it usually happens after up throw. Leon does this all the time (or used to, it seems he goes for Nair nowadays?) The conversion is up-throw to double jump fair and if they airdodge it, then drift in with side b and catch them while your both still in the air. I noticed your example clip was not this frame trap, so I thought it might be useful to mention is case anyone sees this. Another TH-camr that does the up throw trap is Phy, be he usually fast falls and shields after fair connects instead of planning for a miss. Anyone let me know if I'm wrong.
B reversals are something I need a little help in ngl. When I play Chrom I sometimes miss the b reverse and send myself the other way not clipping on the ledge
You should make a video about edge guarding! I see myself just throwing edge guards which could win me the game but I end up getting scared or whatever reason
I like to punish with Ganon Up-smash when I'm out of range of my opponent's aerials and punish in the small window of their landing lag. I do *NOT* recommend this as the most viable option but only when you are just out of reach of whatever vertical move you have. This window does vary depending on the option and your opponent could mix-up their landing before touching the ground, but I find this has some potential but not as a reactionary option.
Hey banana boy, I just wanna say that I've been watching your videos for a long time ever since you made those 30 tips but I am not getting better at the game and I got this game when it released. The reason for this was because I have ADHD and also have some mild autism so I hope that you can make a video about how to get better at the game with some disabilities
I have a video suggestion, go in depth about mixing up your playstyle mid game to throw off your oppenant i know you have done this but i just need a bit more help with it
I’m not sure if this question would be considered in this video, but I’ve been getting this question a lot from my friends. Usually I’ll tell them what to do but they’re just still confused about this question. How do you deal with a stalling down air like bowser, or Ridley?
I listened to the classical music in this video and I have been transported to the 1500’s. I have no food and people think I’m a witch. Please send help. All jokes asside tho I really dig it!
As a dork spamus main, after I whiff an up-b out of shield JUST GO TO WHERE I AM GOING TO LAND AND DOWN SMASH. The amount of times I mix people up and they miss a f-smash is honestly sad
Inside the mind of a Lucas main trying to cover a landing:
“Who are we fighting?”
“Jigglypuff.”
“...”
“...”
“Up-Smash?”
“Amazing.”
Outstanding Move
lol when that happens I literally just air-dodge
As a Lucas main, we also consider PK freeze
@Dank Legosi "Now... back to being ambiguously evil."
Considering i kept getting matched against the same lucas over and over yesterday when i was playing puff
GOD I FELT this comment
Sounds like somebody's been listening to classical music
Yes, you and me, watching this video
Can you PLEASE do a tech chasing video. I need help with this it’s the only smash fundamental thing I’m really bad at instead of only kinda bad.

Thanks a million Banana Boy! You made me a Yoshi main and never has a character clicked with me. It all makes sense and he’s my best character.

Marth: Lands a tipper.
Yooooo, Non Piu Andrai was a solid choice
It’s true that it is easier to catch landing on flat stages but I feel like you have more juggling potential on plats though imo.
I have been having trouble with getting grabbed a lot and I was wondering when should I spot dodge
spot dodge isn’t your only option to avoid grab. Against grabbers, I like to stay in the air more than usual so I don’t get grabbed
This is truly a well done video.
I have a video suggestion, go in depth about mixing up your playstyle mid game to throw off your oppenant i know you have done this but i just need a bit more help with it
