Project 333: Is this The Gateway To Minimalism?

  • I tried Project 333 for the first time back in 2015, and it completely changed the way I select and shop for my clothes today! The fashion challenge created by Courtney Carver is what got me started creating minimalist wardrobes, and though I no longer follow the Project 333 rules to a tee, certain elements of it have stuck. I still create a capsule wardrobe every season, and in a way, this is what started me on a path of living with less. In this video I'm honest about Project 333 pros and cons - what works, what doesn't, and what I still do today. If you need Project 333 explained, or you're looking for examples of a Project 333 Capsule Wardrobe, this channel is a good place to start!

    Hello there! My name is Fernanda and I started putting together Capsule Wardrobes for Project 333 back in 2015. Since then, I have completely rearranged my closet and now have a minimalist wardrobe, and I dress from a base of 15-piece capsule wardrobes every season that I put together with a simple capsule wardrobe formula. If you're looking to learn how to out together a capsule wardrobe, how to style few pieces for many different occasions, or how to include color and bold prints into your wardrobe, then I'm here to help!

    Yes to the "mock" capsule! For someone like me, a capsule with elevated casuals and some color would be ideal. Lots of simple, neutral-colored pants and a few colored jeans (no distressed jeans, no leggings or shorts) a couple of skirts (not necessarily as formal as a corporate black pencil skirt), a variety of versatile tops that can be layered (embellished tanks and drape-y tees that stand alone but can also go under a button up shirt, fine knit sweaters, a couple of blouses and jackets) and a perfect sleeveless sheath dress in a neutral color that I can wear by itself, with a cardi, a blazer, a long sleeve shirt underneath, a wide waist-cinching belt, a skinny belt...) Those are the types of clothes that I can dress up or down and use to go to work during the week, and on weekends to have fun in. (If my comment seems oddly specific, it's because I was looking at my closet while I typed!) :-) :-) :-) I usually have more than 33 pieces out because I divide my clothes into "Spring-Summer" and "Autumn-Winter" collections, but I would say I don't go past 50 pieces for each 6 months' span, and that's including things like rain jackets and wool coats.
    I'm enjoying your videos very much!

      This is so great! I need to pin this comment because this is a perfect example of what a shopping list should be when you're creating a capsule. You have all of your activities covered, your dress codes, and even a basic idea of a color palette! You got all the basics down!

      @@vazq_Fernanda Oh, thank you! Inspired by your "numbers" system, I pulled out the following pieces to use the rest of the summer: 7 tops, 6 bottoms, 5 layers (cardigan, denim jacket, 2 linen blazers, utility vest), 4 pairs of shoes, 3 dresses, 2 handbags, and 1 special item (a vintage silk scarf). I'll let you know how it goes!

    My largest challenge is winter. Mittens, scarfs, heavy coats, light coats (for shopping & car rides), long johns, ski pants, snow mobile suits. It all adds up. I am considering doing a capsule wardrobe and just ignoring the outside clothing and base layers. Without those I could do it.

      That's what I did! I don't count outerwear or underwear in winter because they are not optional. I HAVE to wear them.

    It wasn’t until my late 50s that I discovered what I really loved to wear every day, knit dresses and some knit trousers in winter. I still have many separates, but they don’t get the same wear, so I’ve stopped buying them, I have plenty and they’re all pretty timeless. I’ve also banned synthetic fibers, denim and shorts, which I kept buying before, but never wore. Because of decades of material deprivation, I will never be a minimalist, but I’m trying to stop filling that old gap in my life with wardrobe items, I have more than enough. I still have to part with a few final items that I love, but never wore, then I will be able to truly say I love and wear every item in my wardrobe. My goal is less, slower and more thoughtful consumer behavior.

    Here's idea for a capsule you could show us!! A lot of people ride their bikes to work. While you could get to work and change your outfit, putting on a skirt and heels, I find it better to wear high quality sneakers and leggings paired with a camisole and a button down shirt. It doesn't work for all environments but not everyone works in a traditional formal office setting. In that sense, your take on a mature and stylish capsule wardrobe for those of us that use a bicycle as a vehicle would be very cool to see!!

    Having a smaller wardrobe has changed my life and given me so much freedom (time and money wise)! I have to ask... what do you ask for when you get your hair cut?! I love it!

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I found a hair dresser that I love years ago and I just tell her the length I want and then say "Do whatever you want." She has NEVER failed me, but she has known my hair for five years so she knows very well how it falls. I think the key is to let your hair dresser see it dry/fall naturally before they cut it and once you trust them, just get out of the way! They are pros for a reason, I think she knows better than I do!

  • @pattileethomas8950

    I just heard of this and I pretty much have two wardrobes, warm weather and cold weather. I can't imagine 4. I also have some things hanging in my closet I NEVER wear but want to keep. Such as the komono I got in Japan and my last wedding dress. I could box these up with tissue and keep them somewhere else, but that would use up more space than them hanging in the back of the closet. So, I am going to put on my list to begin removing items ffrom my closet that are out of season, and I not longer wear or like. 33 Items might be too small at this point, but it is a great target.

    The Jan-Mar/Apr-June etc 'seasons' don't work well with the weather in the UK, so I'm going to adjust it to fit in better. Those are the months I've done so far, and I was struggling to think how I was going to manage July-Sept, which encompasses extreme heat, and autumn temperatures. I'm just going to change the months to fit in with our seasons. Thanks for the suggestion.

    I've only recently heard about this challenge and I'm intrigued. My husband and I are professional house sitters, so lugging lots of clothes around with us is cumbersome. I recently gave away a boot load of clothes. I still have more clothes that I probably need and admittedly, recently bought some new items online, which have yet to arrive. I have started a new goal that if I buy something new, I have to prepared get rid of something old. This way, I'm not accumulating more items. I'll be interested to see how many items I've actually packed and if I can reduce them further.

    So many great points! I had one fairly successful 333 but only did it for 1 month. I have a lot of pieces I love and, living in western NY, I felt I needed more flexibility for the weather. After that I just couldn't stick with it. Jennifer L. Scott does a 10 item core wardrobe with "extras". It didn't work for me because I see everything in my wardrobe and an extra. I always felt stress and guilt for not being able to work within the likits. Still figuring out my process, but plan to try the 15 item wardrobe in August.

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes a lot of sense! For the record: the 15 piece wardrobe works great as your "core" but even I don't only dress from those 15 pieces only for the whole season (I think I do 20-22). If that's what works for you, great! But I try to not limit myself if I think it's not going to serve me.

    I've watched so many videos on project 333 but I've never tried it (except incidentally I've taken that size wardrobe on a 2 month trip on two different occasions, so in that way I sort of did). The main reason I haven't is because I live in California and the weather is really unpredictable and requires so much layering, I always feel like if I planned for a winter capsule then it would be 80° all July, and if I planned for a summer capsule it would suddenly be 55° in June. Then another reason is I really like eclectic colors and styles so it can be hard to have a cohesive wardrobe, but I've been trying really hard lately to shop intentionally and it's making my closet so much more straightforward 😊😊😊

    I just started the challenge a week ago with a summer capsule.
    I want to challenge myself also to create capsules for the next three seasons, as to see if I can do it for a whole year.

      I think that wardrobes are often the most difficult thing to pair down. If you go to your kitchen, you can easily spot duplicates easily and notice that you don't need two of the same sauce pan, but with wardrobes it's a little more nuanced. Patience is key! Have you seen my video on finding your personal style? That is a great place to start, it's nice to have a bigger picture idea before you start decluttering. I tried project 333 before but only recently have I been able to stick to it. I must agree the number 33 is quite arbitrary and there are certain items I no longer include, the first being my handbag because I only own one and it serves me well. There’s no sense including it because it’s not something I frequently swop in or out. Second are my sunglasses, I have prescription sunglasses so I also only have one pair that I use (except for my old prescription ones which I keep for emergencies such as if I break the arm and need to get it repaired). I’ve been able to create 3 capsule modules with a formula that I use which in total adds up to 33 items. It’s more of a guideline than a rule and some modules have more or less items than the rest

    Your videos are so inspiring. I think I saw your winter capsule video first and have been on the hunt for some snakeskin boots ever since. I did find some snakeskin mules that I'm starting to wear this summer. My work is business casual. I wear jeans or leggings nearly every day, without distressing. I try to dress them up with interesting shoes and a nice top or layered top. I'm in Utah where the summer's are hot and the winters are cold. Spring and Autumn here are perfection. I recently remodeled my closet so that I have double rods and a bookcase for my shoes. I do not have a minimal wardrobe at all, but I do love to learn how to mix all my pieces. I use a basic color pallet with lots of black white gray navy and also lots of t shirt type tops in various colors. Lately I've been focusing on buying more quality pieces such as my first cashmere crew neck sweater and more quality jeans.

      Hi Vicki! Check out the Nordstrom website when it gets closet to fall. They have a TON of animal print booties in a ton of different styles and heel heights. That's where I got mine.
      Finding quality pieces is key - especially if you are dressing casual most of the time (I do too). I find that the quality of your basics sets the tone for the rest of your wardrobe, so I definitely invest in those! Also - your closet sounds like a dream. I have a tiny corner in my boyfriend's closet because he has more clothes than I do and he was living here before I moved in, so I just fit to the sides, haha! 😂

    My dress code for work is business casual. I can get away with black jeans and a nice top or sweaters, but don’t wear suits.

      Likely depends on your boss, and possibly the cut of the jeans. It sounds like a wonderful, classy look though!

    I’d love to see a mock capsule! I’m still working on a capsule for myself - so if you’d like a suggestion based on my own life 🙃: I’m a grad student and also musician and actor; I normally travel a lot; I also usually spend large periods of time at home working, with some days working in public. I need some performance clothing that’s very different from what I’d wear at other times; I also need clothes that look good, but allow for unrestricted movement. Additionally, I have two cuddly kitties (one with long hair that clings to everything) - so I have to be very careful with the fabrics I choose. I’d love to own fewer items and be able to accommodate my lifestyle - but my specifics make this feel pretty challenging.
    Thank you for your videos - I really enjoy them and find them helpful!

      I spent 4 years in an acting program and I HEAR YOU when you say that you need clothes that look good but accommodate for movement. I looked and looked for an audition dress for years, and I eventually found a great one. The pet fur is an uphill battle, but I will keep it in mind!

    • @ashleywagner8650

      Fernanda - Approximately Right that’s so cool about your acting program! I’d love to hear more about that (including how you handled clothes/audition dress 😉 were you doing capsules then?) and really appreciate your keeping these things in mind when planning content for us! Really enjoy your videos!

      I didn't dress in capsules back then, partially cause I felt like I needed to have the right outfit for EVERY character and every audition. It was a mess! I'll find a way to tell the story!

      @@Maison_Marion Thank you - that’s a great idea! I do have some more costume-like things that are completely separate from my everyday clothes, but it would probably help to move more pieces into that group so I don’t have to think about them as part of my everyday clothes (especially now/pandemic, when I’m hardly ever wearing them!). I’ve also realized that I don’t have many colder-weather clothes that are practical for movement, working from home, and cat hair - that I actually like. I’m trying not to buy more things for the most part, but knowing where my wardrobe “voids” are does help when I’m having trouble building a capsule!

    I have 350 garments hanging in my closet and nothing to wear. I have to create a wardrobe I can wear. I don’t count coats as they hang in a seperate coat closet. I hate shopping and I am still looking for the perfect fit blue jeans. Thank you as this is very helpful.

    I tried project 333. I made changes to the rules. I swaped clothes if needed (weather, working change) and also did not include shoes and accessories (it can change the whole look, still same clothes). I would love see a year around capsule wardrobe video!

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's similar to what I did the first time too, I didn't count any seasonal winter stuff of purses. I'm curious if you still do it? and noted on the year round capsule!

      @@vazq_FernandaNo, I stoped. Now I use the hanger method and also started a wardrobe diary, where I write down my outfits, shoes and accessories. This help me to realize lot of things. (I wear dresses during summer, where skirts only when its cold. I love the idea off wearing belts, but I rarely wear. Also I wear earings every day, so now I buy earings instead of belts.) After each season I declutter. Also I use Pintrest for finding new outfits (I type in what I have and search). Maybe you can do recreate outfit videos? Love those!:-) Cheers

    So, before I make my comments about Project 333, I wanted to say that I really appreciate your candor and willingness to take and apply feedback/comments.
    I am new to the idea of minimalism and was realizing that I just have too much and that shopping (for me) is often triggered by some sort of emotion that I don't want to fully explore! I was looking at Project 333 as a starting point, but I just resonated with the idea of 33 seeming arbitrary and possibly not what I feel is feasible given my lifestyle and profession and total nostalgia regarding clothing items!
    I will say that I have watched a ton of your videos in the last week and really appreciate the fact of how thoroughly, yet concisely, you explain things! I felt like there was a ton of stuff out there without a rationale and/or flexibility.
    I am a teacher, but I would say that I might have a more professional than casual approach to dressing!

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your comment, Alli. I noticed that I was prone to shopping ehn I felt sad, or particularly when I was unhappy with my life. Somehow it felt that if Iooked the part, then I would get the part. It never happened, and I had to learn to cope differently.
      I will say that if you have clothing that no longer fits or looks good but you cannot part with - that has now become a sentimental item. I don't get rid of them, but I have one box where I keep ALL of my sentimental items: toys, clothes, cards, etc. When the box gets full I go through it, and I inevitably find something that no longer feels that special in comparison to everything else. You don't have to get rid of nostalgic items, in my opinion they just don't deserve the space in your closet.
      And noted on the dress code! Thanks for your comment!

    How and when do you do laundry with a capsule wardrobe

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do laundry every other week! In the beginning it was more often, now I don’t need to so much cause I’ve learned to take better care of my things and purchase better quality fabrics.

  • @jo-annel.wright2975
    @jo-annel.wright2975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I beg to differ. I wear more items in summer due to perspiration not allowing me to wear items two or three times before washing like I do in the cooler months.
    FYI: I dress the same for three seasons and have a small selection plus layers for cold weather. I can only assume I would do the same if I lived in a colder climate. More clothes and layers for three seasons and a small wardrobe for hot weather.

    The only thing I don't like is the jewelry. I think that jewelry shouldn't be included in the count. It doesn't take much room to own a few pieces that really make your wardrobe work. 33 pieces are a good number for clothes, not shoes or purses.

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree with you. The first time I did P333 I didn't count purses or accessories, and that seemed to work very well for me (I made a video about it back in 2015 if you want to see me as a baby 😂), but I didn't have a lot to begin with. I suppose it depends on how much you have.
