I use the module technique to change colors every month. I use the same neutral pants, tops, and 3rd layers pretty much year round but swap the color pieces every 30 days. For example, February focuses on pink, red, and burgundy; March will be kelly green, mustard, and navy. I'm never bored because I know the color scheme only lasts 30 days before I switch it up. (I do repeat colors in different combinations for different months to keep the total number of pieces I own lower.)
Fernanda, I think "modules" is how I dress! I have a "teacher me" collection (mostly pants, no sleeveless, backless, sheer, or low-cut tops, no t-shirt or jeans, a handful of blazers and cardigans, 5 pairs of carefully selected shoes with heels no higher than 2 inches, everything machine washable, discrete jewelry but nothing precious). I'm ruthless with this "module" in order to make sure that all the tops match all the bottoms and all the shoes go with the outfits and season because I need to get dressed quickly in the morning. For the same reason, I keep my "teaching" capsule in a dedicated section of my closet. Then I have the "real me" collection (dresses, pencil skirts, sexier tops, high heels, cashmere sweaters, leather jackets, silk blouses and camisoles, many neutral and monochromatic outfits punctuated by vintage or handmade accessories). Next I have "formal me" (gowns, floor-length chiffon skirts, satin and silk pieces, faux fur, lace, lots of black, navy, and jewel tones, the good jewelry pieces, the 1930s and 1940s vintage minaudieres). Many pieces in the "formal me" and "real me" collections can and do crossover. And finally, there's a group of clothing that I don't consider a collection (the jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, shorts, athleisure) because I spend very little time in those. Ah! And I know I mentioned this before, I keep a lingerie collection: all my everyday pieces are nude, black, or nude-and-black, so they all match, and I wear the same style of bra (nude, no show, supportive, easy to move in) to work every day so I never need to get change my outfit because I don't have the right underwear to go with it.
I can't believe it took me so long to make this video for you, but here it is! I hope you enjoy it, and that it opens up new possibilities for building your wardrobe!
Really thank you for this video. Finally I can "use" all my clothes thanks to you and recommendation of Open Wardrobe where I can save "work" and "casual" outfits
It's modules for me! One for spending time with my small children, lots of it outside, and another for the office. When I tried fulfilling both functions with the same capsule it was paralysing. Never dared to wear any of my office appropriate items when with my kids in case they got dirty or damaged.
My advice to someone who needs to build a career wardrobe from scratch is to: 1. Choose a medium to dark neutral/basic color and a light neutral/basic color that you love and that look good together. Buy a top and bottom, or a suit-very useful, in each color = 4 pieces. (By basic colors I mean pseudo-neutrals like navy or khaki green, they aren’t neutral, but so versatile that they work like neutrals, the more “standard”, and the closer to a pure hue, the color the better; gray-blues or green-blues will be harder to find than navy, for example). 2. Choose a print top that has both neutrals in it = 1 piece. 3. Choose a solid-color too that looks great with both neutrals = 1 piece. 4. Choose a blazer in one of your neutrals, to start = 1 piece (a second one in your other neutral/basic would be the next priority to add). This seven-item starter wardrobe, plus a pair of shoes, gives plenty of options for a workplace wardrobe where every outfit can be rotated through twice per month. A scarf with most of your initial colors in it can give extra variety.
Sounds like a good idea! My work clothes cross over to my going out clothes and vice versa, so they are all together in my closet now. But it is nice to mentally (and maybe physically) organize them in separate modules to reduce decision fatigue, since some of my going out items should not be worn at work (like my jean shorts). Thanks for the tips.
I use this a lot because I have both girly/princessy taste and on the other hand I like a little bit of edge. An outfit needs to have both for me to feel like myself!
That would definitely be a good approach! Using the formula for the clothing that you will wear the majority of your time and modules for other activities. I suppose that is kind of what I do! 😂😂
I suppose I could also see making 1or 2 modules around a favorite accent color and making a 54321 capsule of all neutrals to combine together so there’s no problem of matching. You could probably do that with the color pink it seems to be the most common accent color in your wardrobe. TH-camr Christine ressel did the math with her wardrobe modules in her capsule wardrobe playlist.
I'm still slowly working through my closet/space/moods to make a real capsule wardrobe, but I love the idea of making modules! I think part of my capsule wardrobe issue has been related to having very disparate events and being subjected to constantly changing weather, so I can never shake the stress of being prepared. But just in watching this, I can see some pieces coming together for a work or school module, and I'm kind of excited to start putting them together.
I love the concept of modules. So great! It's been hard with covid for me to slim down clothing and shoes but last month I came up with 4 trash bags to donate! I will try modules for sure!
Brilliant as usual! I realized this is what I did for my first "business casual" job out of sheer desperation and a limited budget. Now I have a more "smart casual" dress code at work, which meshes well with my overall everyday style.
I include dresses in my modules so that cardigans, jackets, coats, shoes, bags, scarves etc go with them as well as tops and bottoms. I find this useful for packing for trips and for planning purchases that will go with a variety of outfits.
I like modules over capsule 🤷🏽♀️ I’m just now starting to find my style again. I wear scrubs 4-6 days a week and somewhere lost my style. I looked at a pic one day and saw I wasn’t cute
Between this and your how to capsule wardrobe video, I have a capsule and 2 321 modules that all pieces interchange and all seasons for me with layers. It’s like 50+ outfits, carry on ready, colorful and all pieces I love!!! Thank you!!
I love this!! This is so good. You know, it actually hadn't occurred to me to do that but I think i'll take a page for your playbook and build a year-round capsule like this, now that my wardrobe is changing. So thank you!
I LOVE this! I can’t wait to work on my Modules, which seems very fitting for my current lifestyle. My modules will be for SAHM, workouts, & Sunday clothes. I’ll likely throw in 1 formal dress. Eeeeek! This is the first time in years that I’ve looked forward to sorting out my clothing (since becoming a Mama). Thank you! I really enjoy your videos! Side note: Being a SAHM wonderful! I just never knew how to shift the wardrobe seamlessly.
I so needed this video Thanks 😊 I have been going through my clothes this month . Love capsule wardrobes I'm a deep autumn trying to find my best colors
I have 2 capsule wardrobe modules - one with skirts and one with pants. The reason is that I dislike to tuck in tops in my pants (I have wide bottom and I don't love to display it), so I wear more flowy blouses, sweaters and shirts with my pants, and I wear skirts with most of the "pant module" pieces and some other more fitted pieces that I wouldn't wear with pants. I also have cardigans and blazers that can be worn with either pant or skirt outfits. For me this is a great shopping strategy that helps save money and time, since I only have to find certain pieces that work with one of the modules and not the WHOLE wardrobe.
I have to do this living in northern Canada. Winter we have lows of -45 Celsius and summer as high as +45 degrees Celsius! I need to rotate my modules for seasons. Swapping out warm boots and pants for shorts and skirts etc 😊 I can keep things like t shirts and cardigans for spring summer & fall
Don’t wear casual clothes to your workplace if the dress code forbids it or if even no one else does. Violating the dress code is legal grounds for dismissal, the employer has the right. Even if no one says anything to you officially, you will likely be passed over for promotion in favor of someone who looks the part, especially if there is client contact involved in the position. Those who dress down too much, or too sexy, will be considered to be not serious about their career, or not fitting in with with the corporate culture. Don’t push the boundaries at the office, save that for your free time. I spent my whole career in the corporate world and have seen many cases of those not invited back from internships, not promoted, or not assigned to clients, etc., because of these issues. The safest thing to do is to dress like your female supervisor, in terms of formality, you can still have your own personal style, just not, necessarily, a casual one. It’s a myth that we can dress however we want at work.
"Rock Chic"! It's a style of dressing - I kinda think of it like a more feminine and stylized version of what a rock band from the 90's would wear (think of like.. what an "edgy" character on a show on the CW would wear). Thought your comment did make me think of what a rock "sheikh" style would look like, and it made me smile. :)
@@vazq_Fernanda haha! Of course! That makes sense. And, yes, I guess a rock sheikh would be an interesting sight. But then, I’m sure a rock chic is pretty interesting too, lol!

Thank you for reviving a very old concept.

@@olagerta8199 How fun!! Have you taken the time to put together many outfits on OW?
@@vazq_Fernanda I'm still doing this in OW :)

this is SUCH a good point that I didn't even think about but it's true! Especially as a mom of little kids this will come in super handy!

Interesting! I love the idea of creating modules for different ‘moods’.
Hi, its so nice to see color capsule for a change😊
I just posted a video of a capsule FULL of color with not a single neutral. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/0LdoqZR6YF8/w-d-xo.html

72 outfits if all tops and bottoms and layers can cross over. - 6 tops x 4 bottoms x 3 (layer 1, layer 2, no layer)
