      Yes. We are highly restrictive of his screen time. He gets to play for 2 hours on weekend days and through the summer, but school night are limited to 1/2 hour. We don't let him on the Internet without direct supervision.

    Great information and support for the DIYer Tom!! You are so right about people with high priced tools, scanners, etc., making the DIYer think they can't repair vehicles if they don't have those high priced tools, YES THEY CAN!
    That air compressor is nicely priced and I have seen your videos using it, and it gets the job done without any problems.
    QUESTION: Is there a way to make the electric air compressors any quieter?
    It is a GREAT idea to have Wesley in your videos, he's not camera shy and had no problem using the screwdriver. But most importantly, you just gave some fathers out there a way to spend quality time with their son, AND teach them some handy skills.

      If you need a quiet electric then don't get a direct drive one, although the oiless ones are even louder than the oiled one. The ones with a separate motor and cylinder(s) driven by a belt are much quieter.

      I wanted something electric for our small van that will be able to run off a power inverter, so I know I will not be able to use the one with the belt, a power inverter would never be able to take that, but the one you have is a nice size that would fit in the van.

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would take a HUGE inverter to run it. Mine will blow 15AMP breakers. I have to run it on a 20AMP. You may want to look for a oiless one they draw a lot lest current.

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would run in on at least a 2000 Watt Inverter. 2000Watts / 12 = 166.6Amps @ 12Volts I would run 6 Gauge wire, but you may get by with 8 Guage if it is small enough. I have some 6 gauge that would work nice for it if you need some, I will send it to ya. I have a cheap place to get heavy wire here and I have about 15-20 feet left over from and old project.

      I do have a 2500 watt inverter in the other van, so you think that will handle a compressor like yours?
      I have a lot of extra 0/4 gauge wire to be able to wire it up, but thank you so much for offering.

    I have same one, I took out the little screw too. Doesn't see to get all the oil out. So I just took out the 4 screws and took entire cover off.
    Was some left in there and was able too clean it up as well

    Tom, the site glass is to be removed to change the oil. Be careful not to over tighten when replacing. No need to wait for the oil to come out of the unknown screw hole.

    Thanks for sharing Tom. I have the same compressor. I bought an extended warranty for it and swapped it out a couple of weeks prior to its expiration.
    My current one has been going strong for about three years now but in that time, I've invested in cordless tools when I could afford to, so it's use is infrequent.
    I also want to upgrade to the 29 Gallon. More capacity and much quieter.

      Thanks for Watching! I would love to get a belt driven one, one day. For right now though it works okay for the amount of work I do with it.

      @jordaneven9096 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, it just depends what you want to do. For some long run applications, like a die grinder, you would notice a difference with a model that puts out more CFM. But this compressor can take on a lot a of high level DIY tasks.

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reason I want the belt driven one is they are quieter. In my little garage that thing gets loud and my ears start ringing if I don't wear the hearing protection.

    • @jordaneven9096

      That's the truth for sure - I use noise cancelling in ear head phones and ear muffs on top lol

    That "meter" is called a sight glass, just so you'll know. I saw an old guy's video with a great idea. He cut the side off a quart oil bottle & used that as a drain pan. The neck made a great handle, & the cap made transferring the used oil to a sealed container a breeze. The main reason those small compressors are so loud is ALUMINUM! You have a Cast iron cylinder, but he head is aluminum, as is the crank case. All-cast iron compressors are denser and heavier, so they make less noise. About the only real way to quiet your garage is to insulate it and find ways to eliminate echoes. No need to put up gypsum board or plywood, just insulate. Put tarp or mesh over it if you use insulation without backing(Batts) or fiberglass. It'll be more temperature stable as well. I'm not so sure that is going to reduce the noise to a level you can tolerate though. I have a Central Pneumatic 10 gallon, btw, so I feel your pain.

      You need to do a VR to see if you can win a Impact Wrench to use on it. No one else has entered yet. You may be the only one and win by default.

    Just a DYIer, but this compressor has one everything I have asked of it, from painting all the furniture for my daughters nursery to cracking the axel nut off my 12 year old nissan sentra.

      Also, man, I try not to get on youtube and rag on people, but I am huge believer in expensive synthetic oils lol

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The synthetics are no doubt better, but I think for the application the cheap stuff will keep this air compressor alive longer than me.

    Have a problem with my compressor. It's the same brand and everything but for some reason my compressor stays running? There's no lines connected and I've changed the oil and drained the water. Know what could cause that?

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely a bad pressure switch. That is the part that has the on off switch on it.

    First time viewer. I see a comment that you upgraded. To what? HF has a manual hose reel, have you seen it? Have you tried spray painting(automotive) ? I got my little guy involved with helping me in the garage and now he has a Masters in Mech. Engineering. Neer hurts to know how things work. Thanks for posting.

      I have a large 80 gallon 240volr belt driven compressor that was given to me. I fixed it up and I use it now.

  • @charlesgraham9954

    u use that cheap when i first got my unit to flush it out real good. hell i even let it drain straight thru. then i put the good royal purple in it. and iv had ths so called cheap Harbor freight air compressor going on 10 years. with no problems. and i use it 5 days a week doing small engines repair. i use a stubby ultra lite impact wrench like a cordless drill

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually sold this air compressor a while because I was given a bigger one. Royal purple is probably better, but I am cheap.

    Question the oil plug when u screw off the upper piece and remove the round flat washer like do u see like some silver shavings down in the bottom of oil plug am wondering if its dere for a purpose

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's just metal shavings from the wear/break in of the unit. The first oil change has a lot of these.

    Hey Tom!
    Mine is shooting oil out of the fill cap.
    Does your fill cap have a hole in it, 3 holes inside on a plastic disk?

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure. I got rid of this compressor because I had a larger one given to me. I would make sure it's not overfilled.

    • @bobfather1978
      @bobfather1978 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is doing the same could I use some plastic ipoxy to seal off the little hole

    • @jim3041
      @jim3041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will do that if it's overfilled with oil (don't ask me how I know that!).

    Hello I was looking to get this to use with a small plasma cutter that says it requires 4.5 cfm @60 to 75psi do you think this would work?

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will do 4.7CFM at 90PSI so it's pushing it, but it would do it. This compressor would be running constantly to keep up with it though, so If you do very much plasma cutting I would look for something bigger and that is not direct drive. If you go with this one get the extended warranty!
