Remington 597 Modification Part 2 :: 30 Round Magazine

- Alright guys here is the first step to upgrading my Remington 597. In this video I'm taking a clear magazine and painting it black while leaving a few spots clear. I do this so it makes my Remington just a little more custom than the average 597. Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any questions.

the fact that a factory magazine is hit or miss with reliability is enough to make me stick with a ruger 10/22 and marlin 795. their mags r awesome. I do like how u made those little windows for the 20 and 30 round places. very smart my friend.

I've never had a problem with feeding with any magazine I've put in my 597. Works impeccable.

Dude, I bought the same mags. I masked off the back spine and the area that is inserted into the 597. So far so good. I loaded the 2 30 round mags (to max 25 rounds) and both mags split down the fucken middle! I used superglue, clamps and a file and sandpaper to get them back to specks. It is what it is.

very nice work man. I would love to have a few mags like that. I just got my 597 today and haven't even shot it yet.
Its a great gun no problems. 30 round mag works l have the black one. I never put in 30 rounds only 25 just to keep tension on the spring.
i got one that dint work properly... heres wat was happening.... the mag was realy tight fting into the mag well and all i did to fix that was sand down the mag and allso when you load the full 30 rounds in it... it some times hangs up... all i did to fix that was spray a bunch of rem oil in iside of it( so much it was leaking out the bottom) and load 32 rounds in it (as much as i could get in it) and left it in for a few days and went and shot it out now it works fine loved the video series!!!!
Dude that was an awesome job on the paint job and stencils. If I didn't live in California, I'd do that too... However I'm stuck with the 10 rounders.
@joshlone1982 Thanks man, I hope that Krylon lasts as long as it did for you. I took my time scuffing the entire magazine and did a few even coats, I think the two with the clear coat will last a while. That's a great idea to paint the feedramp... It would even look cool if I painted it a color to match the final camo of the gun, that way it would really look tricked out. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

@ZDrox1 Go for it. If you have the capability to cut stickers then it's an easy way to customize a magazine. I used whatever software came with my vinyl cutter when I bought it 10 years ago.
@alsoonce Yes you can install a sling on this rifle. I should be putting my rifle back together soon and will be installing a sling... stay tuned.
@MrGunAddiction Sick is right, I couldn't be more please with the way they turned out, they are awesome. I just hope the paint lasts, if it doesn't I might have to spring for some Duracoat.

i have that magazine for my 597. its a piece of junk. super tight fitting and always jams
@stabnshoot Yeah they turned out a lot better than I thought they would. I appreciate the compliment, makes all the hard work worth it. Maybe I should use Duracoat, that way it would be a really durable paint job.
@mattjo00 Thanks dude. It definitely took some time but the end product is awesome. Now I just need to get the camouflage job done... it's taking forever. I think I'm just going to put it on the back burner for a while.

Cool video, like your ingenuity. I had never thought of buying clear mags and then painting them. How do those magazines run in the 597? Are they reliable?

I have had zero issues. I think it's just a matter of luck if you get 30 round magazines that work or not. I got lucky and all of mine work great. I'm sure there are some crappy ones out there though.
@sand0609 I did! I see that there is no limit on magazine size in Canada if you have a rim fire rifle.

The cricket vinyl printer is pretty cheap so you can make some custom pieces

Good job! I lke the camoflage stock better but maybe just stick with black now that you have your magazines painted black.

@semiautoriflelover You know I haven't shot it lately but when I did, years ago, I never had an issue. It's probably one of those things where you either have one with zero malfunctions or have one that fails repeatedly. I guess I got lucky, although I haven't shot it in a while so when I do take it out it could have problems... I just don't know for sure.

@fisher2852 I think a better question is why wouldn't I modify such an awesome gun. Why not customize the gun to fit me better and function better. With the forward rail I have the choice of bipod, forward grip, sling attachment point, etc. I don't consider the magazine mod a big deal either way, it's not like I'm changing the rifle here. It's a small .22 caliber rifle, why not make it more enjoyable to shoot. Sorry if my customization bothers you, I think it personalizes it. Take care.
@DaytonaRoadster Thanks man. Anyone could do this with some tape, an Exacto Knife, and some patience. Just take your time and taping and painting anything you want and it will turn out great.
Where did you purchase the 30rd magazine I can only find a 22rd pro mag
@fordfan855 All three of my magazines hold 30 rounds just fine. I don't even think I've had an issue with them fitting to tight... They must've fixed the problem.
extended mags for .22 are legal in Canada, for center fire not. Only exception is 10 round pistol and the 10 round pistol mags for the AR 15 pistol, otherwise we are restricted to 5 rounds for semi autos. Bolt guns different matter can have 10 rounds. Have you had any issues with the 30 round mags not feeding properly for the last few rounds? Nice looking kit.

@joshlone1982 Well I hope that Scuff pad does as good as your 600 grit sand paper. If it chips or anything I wont sweat it, simply war wounds for the magazine. You know all I can say is I think I'm doing the Mutlicam on the rifle... I making it a point not to say exactly how I'm doing it. I'm going to simply show the end product (which I think will turn out INSANE) and then explain how I got there. Unfortunately its going to take a little while... Probably around a month. You have to remember that there is a spring and a follower that need room at the bottom of the mag. If you look at a full ar 15 Lancer mag there is about 2 inches of space for the spring and follower. Thats for a double stack mag that has been engineered to nest the spring within itself and the follower. The 597 mag is single stack and does not nest at all.
@enticed2zeitgeist For small deer a .22 WMR (magnum round) may work, however you should use a higher calibre.

@marksjdejong Ahh, the centerfires would be the AR's and other high powered nato rounds right? Do you think you could hunt deer with a Rimfire? Do rimfire come in bigger casings than .22?

@psychoclown420 Unfortunately I probably wont be doing any shooting videos anytime soon. Like I keep telling people I live in an area with no shooting ranges, the closest is a couple hours away. On top of that I don't have any public land that I can go shoot on, I'm surrounded by thousands of miles of farm land... and I'm not one to trespass to shoot. Trust me there isn't much I want more than to shoot, you've seen my collection, they just sit there unused... it SUCKS.

@crazytru02 I'm sorry but I double checked and the markers aren't in the wrong spot. They are exactly where they need to be in the correct order. When you load bullets you are going to hit 20 before you hit thirty... you start with one and stop at 30.
When you show the large window where it says remington, it looks like the clear window is actually recessed into the plastic and the black part around it sticks up.... however when you show the on in the box, it doesn't look like its different heights... is this an illusion or did you modify that too before painting?

30 Round Magazine Solution: I have 10 of them, some fit and some didn't. I noticed the one's that didn't were hitting the front screw on the stock. I drilled a 1/16th hole the size of the screw head in the stock so the screw was flush with the stock, and all 10 clip in very nicely. I also put gun oil on the clips for easier movement. After a while, they tend to grind down to fit nicely. Great video, now I wish I would have purchased the clear ones.

Will those 30 round magazines fit into a 597 VTR? and would you happen to know if 30 round magazines are legal in Canada?
i got 4 mags 2 clear 2 black both black ones both work 100% 1 of the clears ones only will hold 26 any more it wont feed if you put any more in it
@enticed2zeitgeist For rimfire's in canada there is no limit, if you have a 500 round mag all the power to ya, Pistols are restricted to 10, And most centerfire's at 5.
Just like with any polymer mag, no matter the quality, (magpul, tapco, lancer) its a good idea to down load by at least a couple rounds, 5 is better (especially if you store them loaded). Not saying they won't function if you don't, just sayin that they will last longer if you do. Also, again not saying you do but, don't let them hit the ground on emergancy reload drills they will not hold up.
@TheGearTester To be honest they are really testy. You either get one that will run flawlessly or one that will malfunction. Thats the truth on these 30 round magazines.
can you install a sling in this rifle???
@enticed2zeitgeist Unfortunately I don't know the answer to either of those questions. I'm guessing you live in Canada... if so you can always contact your local police department and ask them any questions about legal issues.
Try plasti-dip. Less prone to flaking which will be a nightmare when it comes to feeding.

You should have put your marks at 20(ok) & 27 to 29 because you never want to fully load a magazine.1) it cuts down on malfunctions 2)The magazine's lifespan is increased to 30% by downloading it to 29 & 10% more for each additional round...
@psychoclown420 Wow are you really calling that a problem... it must be hard living in an area where you can shoot anywhere you want, I thought I had it bad. I have to figure out something bad, that way I can get some shooting videos uploaded.

Think you have the 20 and 30 in the wrong location. 30 should be at the bottom. And the location marked 20 should be 10.

the 30 round magazine suck. don't buy it, buy a couple of the 10 round magazines. the 30 round one is made of plastic and the 10 round are made of steel. the 30 round magazines don't fit right and jam a lot
