I appreciate your concern for the fish and recognise that I probably would have been better netting the dish in that case (see the other comments) but I think that your reaction is perhaps a bit OTT?
Great video but have to echo some of the other comments here about the handling of the fish. Why beach them on the rocks and risk damaging them when you have a net at your disposal? Surely the better way would be to net the fish in deeper water, release the hook and then set them on their way?
Maybe you make a fair point. With grilse I just try and get them in really quick and often I find in my experience that netting a green fish is tricky so beaching them is usually the simplest and fastest way to get then on their way. Looking back I probably should have netted them in that case because the river bed as you point out was stoney and not that suited for beaching. I was just watching your Alston safari again last night as I was thinking of going up there. Difficult to judge water levels I guess. I took a chance on the 5cm lift at Felton today and found a shiny little grilse. The wind made casting very tricky though.
@@brianpeutherer2666 Well done on the grilse. You want it 0.8 and dropping at Alston. Big beat isn’t it? 3 of us fished there a few years ago. Had an interesting week, almost got swept downstream at that Ford in our truck (after ghillie told us not to cross there..whoops) one of the group had 6 fish in an hour and a half from same spot (below the hut) and we lost the key to our cottage and got eaten alive by the midges while looking for it at 11.00pm!! Good times!!👍
You’ve had a great trip there Robb! I read the comments around beaching v netting and what is ‘best practice’. Like you I try not to over-play fish. I try to keep time out of the water to an absolute minimum and avoid contact with dry hands, stones etc. I believe double hooks actually do less damage than single hooks as the two anchor points reduce the movement of the steel when the angle of force changes during the fight. Single hooks ‘work’ and enlarge the wound. We all love salmon, do our best by them and accept that things don’t always follow a perfect plan.
Hi, I agree we all want to do as little damage as possible but as you know in the moment even the best laid plans of mice and men don't always come to fruition. Every day is a schoolday though so I don't mind the criticism, it's part and parcel of posting publicly.
This is a nice video, many thanks. I would observe though that although you might feel a bit daft with a cam on your head, if you're going to video for an audience it's much better for us because then we can see the fish actions in the water instead of your rod hand. Just my two penn'orth. Tight lines to you Sir.😊🎣 PS If you want to see a fine example of excellent catch & release please try a look at any of the vids in the 'Drew Looknfishy' channel.👍🏻
Thanks but yes I would feel like a sausage with a camera strapped to my head I'm afraid. I try and keep filming as basic as possible as I'm primarily going fishing not filming.
