Great episode - I had no idea that you're not allowed to state in court what you were arrested for protesting! Please, please talk soon about trans rights in the UK. One of the scariest trends I'm seeing in UK politics at the moment is the dialogue around trans people that is substantively almost indistinguishable from the garbage being enacted in Florida and Montana, but with apparent bipartisan approval in the UK.

I don't necessarily agree. The US show is hosted by former Obama staffers. This is fronted by a not very successful comedian and a journalist. I think a better insight about British politics is gained from the Rest is Politics. This show is quite superficial with not much insight.

This show lacks substance, I absolutely LOVE pod save America and pod save the world, such a fountain of knowledge and great insight/perspective on domestic and international events. These guys might as well be talking about sports, tv, etc. Like there's just nothing happening other than 2 unqualified people just reading headlines and throwing out opinions. "Pod save" should be hosted by people who know more than just how to read, I can read the damn news, I watch to learn more and get an informed perspective. these guys literally just read Wikipedia and news articles. I'm half way through this video and genuinely didn't learn anything I couldn't have gotten from just going to the BBC website.

      Hi
Read your comment, checked out The Rest Is Politics, listened to the episode about the coronation.
All they talked about were pee breaks, uniforms, and how a woman looked holding a sword.
There was a tacit acceptance of the monarchy whereas PSTUK actually questioned why we have a monarchy; and TRIP's coverage of tbe anti protest law was shallow (though Im glad they don't like the law)
      In short:
I tested your opinion and your opinion failed
      PSTUK is better than TRIP

@@Illiteratechimp if you're literally comparing it to piss jokes, then yes I'm sure it's great. If you'd like to compare it to THE REST OF POD SAVE PODCASTS then you'd see where I'm coming from. I guess in general, I'd agree. As a stand-alone podcast with no connection to pod save America, sure it's entertaining. But they were literally introduced on PSA as the new UK version of the Pod Save series. When we look at what makes the pod save series so special, it's because we have insiders hosting a podcast that deep dives the political issues facing our nation and their opinions, break downs, advice, and all commentary comes from their ACTUAL EXPERIENCE in government. When they put on a show, I actually learn from them not just their guests. Pod Save the UK is just not at all what pod save was built to be, and not at all the direction it should head in.
If a podcast about the military was started by veterans with immense knowledge of how the military functions, that's something worth subscribing to. But if that military podcast is hosted by a journalist and comedian...well I won't take it seriously as it'll just be commentary at best and gossip at worse.

On the subject of press coverage of demonstrations. I live in Paris and have been in the middle of demonstrations for a while now. The press shows the police charging, using water cannon and so you are lead to believe that it is to control violence. Not true! The protests doused by water cannon were spontaneous and peaceful. We have motorcycle police with an extra riot policeman (yes, they are only men), on the back beating people from that height advantage with a truncheon. The 'Home Office' equivalent is vigorously behind extreme police action. We need to keep spotlighting this behaviour. When in the UK recently people were asking me if I was scared to be in Paris. The demos go past my windows and I am more afraid of being caught up by violent police.

British American here. Really enjoying your podcast. My family in the UK are mostly anti monarchy. As an anglophile it is hard to look away from the pagentry of a coronation but arresting peaceful protesters is one of the worst looks ever from UK police and policy! I hope this is reversed quickly and thanks for shining light on the situation!! Power hungry policy makers going way beyond the limits of civil disobedience! Also thanks to your guest. My cousin worked for decades protecting the water and rivers in Cornwall so we are definitely defenders of the environment!

Hi Coco, massively off topic but if you need to fix your shoes super glue isn’t great. when it dries, it is super brittle, so when your shoe flexes it will quickly come apart. You need a glue with more flex in it. I always recommend Kövulfix which is a simple contact glue designed with shoes in mind. Overwise: great show, keep it up :)

As an American, I urge you to fight this with everything you have over there. The actions you were scandalized about, our police can just do anytime they like. Being locked up for any length of time, charged or not, deters people with family dependents and insecure employment from protesting. That has a chilling effect. Keep up the public outrage and do not let them get away with this. That video of your guest arguing with a police officer was so scary to me, I was waiting for him to snap and hurt your guest, because that's just what we expect over here.

Didn't suffragettes lock on? Would we have got votes for women if they hadn't?

Not only did they lock on but they also committed arson. They were super disruptive, if it was now the Daily Fail would have been demanding beheadings.

    • @frankshailes3205
      @frankshailes3205 ปีที่แล้ว

Lock on? They did all sorts, including killing people! Suffragettes in Great Britain and Ireland orchestrated a bombing and arson campaign between the years 1912 and 1914. The campaign was instigated by the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), and was a part of their wider campaign for women's suffrage. The campaign, led by key WSPU figures such as Emmeline Pankhurst, targeted infrastructure, government, churches and the general public, and saw the use of improvised explosive devices, arson, letter bombs, assassination attempts and other forms of direct action and violence. At least 5 people were killed in the attacks (including one suffragette), and at least 24 were injured (including two suffragettes).

Power ignores tea party protests. "Say Alice, are you upset about X?" "Why yes I am, is there any sugar?" "I'll check in the kitchen." Wow, that is so effective and no traffic was stopped. Power continues to drive on with their agenda. Reporter asks Power "Did you know that 2 million households did a tea protest (at tea time simultaneously)?" Power looks at the reporter (is that a smirk?) and says "Of course we care. Sorry, have to run to continue our agenda."
Maybe Coco is right. That angry commuters are not going to be sympathetic to the protest when they can't get to work on time. But protests are worthless if the result isn't to get the attention of people who can do something about the protest issue. If they can ignore you, why bother?

Viewers/listeners from outside the UK might not get that, so it might be an idea to explain at some point.

Pod save America/the world was started by people who were high up in presidential administrations, people who have been on the front lines of politics and hosting a show about politics should require atleast a politicical background. Imagine a podcast about the military hosted by a journalist and comedian, why even listen to that? Especially if (in this example) the original podcasts were started by combat veterans. @gskgregor I never said it was a competition, it's clearly a a spin off of the pod save series just like pod save America. The reason why those were so popular and big is because of the inner working knowledge they bring. These guys don't bring anything to the table, they are commentators at best. The reason I listen to pod save is to be informed by the people who have actually been there and know what's bullshit and what isn't and can give INFORMED opinions.
These guys are no one from any government, no knowledge of any inner workings, no previous experience in any administration so they don't offer any informed opinions, or knowledge based facts. It comes off as just silly gossip. It's an absolute waste of a platform

Your running reaction to misuse of your cute little phrase by Americans is charming.
Here in America, or at least in the rural Southern part of it, our equivalent of "Chat Shit, Get Banged" would be "Fuck Around and Find Out."
