Dr. Allin-Khan is a phenomenal representative. I was already crying from the taped interviews, but her perspective from hospital (especially having to choose which family member to send in to say goodbye) was heart breaking. Hancock should be forced to apologize for being so dismissive. Tone policing someone who was bringing to light the abject horror and suffering of her patients and of her constituents... it's insulting. Dr. Khan is a far better and more polite person than I to smile in response to such a patronizing asshat.
Love to hear Nish go off on the Tories, he’s absolutely right on every count when he says Boris was inevitable in the conservatives party & every single one of them is complicit in his rise when they stood behind his lies. The NHS is more underfunded than ever - just for that BoJo deserves to be thrown out, for lying brazenly to the British public.
I feel this so strongly too...BJ has been horrendous for the UK...but I still personally think more blame is at the feet of David Cameron for all the crap he did to bring BJ in
As an american listening, Im thrilled that we are not the only ones having crazies in our conservative parties.....but extremely sad at the same time lol tone?! People were dying and families are not able to say goodbye and his first comment is about tone?!?!?! Her tone was completely appropriate for what she witnessed
The argument about tone is one of the most frustrating ones out there. At a certain point you cannot respect a party that repeatedly chooses to do nothing/make the problem worse. Unfortunately, in America, both parties are equally bad when it comes to most economic issues
We Americans have two conservative parties, but one of them is extreme and populated almost entirely by crackpots and fascists. The Tories and the Republicans have so much in common, it's frightening.
The emotional whiplash from this episode broke me. From hilarious to sad, shocked, hilarious again to devastated and somehow hilarious again at the end.
Rosena Allin-khan would have my vote in a heartbeat on the basis of this content, exactly the kind of person I want representing me and my nation. As for the PPE contracts, partygate, and the other covid related scandals… the people responsible and those that benefited need to be sent to a gulag.
Fantastic episode Nish and Coco! Dr Allin-Khan was wonderful. Such powerful stories. Huge respect to her - would happily vote for her any day of the week!
Coco! If you're ever in the States we'll get you scanned and printed in a jiffy. I would pay for a figure on my desk with a button to press where I could hear you say "Capitalism was built to be racist!"
Dr Allin-Khan is the kind of person all politicians should be, intelligent, compassionate, empathetic and willing to do what's right to help others without a second thought for herself. I cannot imagine Matt Hancock or BoJo or any Tory mp saying it was a no-brainer to work in a hospital in a pandemic with no PPE! I'm fortunate to have not lost any family members to covid, but I followed all rules and guidance to keep myself and others safe. Partygate made me so angry and i can't imagine how it must have felt for those who couldn't be with their loved ones as they died. I'm in tears listening to the testimonies from the inquiry and Dr Allin-Khan.

I find how mortgages work in the U.K. to be very confusing. Here in the U.S., you can sign up for a fixed rate mortgage for 30 years. You can also have an adjustable/variable rate mortgage for 30 years, too. You can also refinance your mortgage. U.K. mortgages seem more like a lease for an apartment/flat here with a set rent for the length of the lease. I listened to James O'Brien talking about this on his LBC show. The callers were just so difficult to listen to as they talked about their mortgages doubling. I agree that the self entitled jerks who are or aren't going to get into the House of Lords is just a lame distraction! Oh and yes please take away Boris' yearly money for having been prime minister. While they're at it, perhaps a law that says if you don't make it past 90 days, and or you completely screw up the economy, etc., you also aren't entitled to that money either. It could be put to much better use elsewhere!
In the UK, mortgages usually have fixed rates for 1 to 10 years. The most common fix is 5 years. After that it goes onto the bank's standard variable rate. After a fixed period expires, the person can remortgage (essentially pay off their current mortgage balance and take out another mortgage from the same or different mortgage provider) Of course you've been paying it off for x amout of years so you would be getting a smaller mortgage. In terms of rentals. You may have heard of leasehold properties. So let's say you buy an apartment in a block. Often that is sold leasehold which means you "buy" the property but it's actually a lease for X amount of years. Usually between 100 and 250. Somebody owns the building and they're technically your landlord. Companies would buy up these ownerships and charge ground rent. Essentially free money. It was made illegal for new homes but many people still have to pay this. Also when the lease gets near expiry you need to pay money to renew it. Yep....it's the worst.
You can get ten year fixes, they are just not that common, for years the best was 2 or 3 then they went to 5, but its part of the trade off, banking is free in the uk, there is no monthly fee just for having an account and if your good with money credit cards are in effect free, as every single one offers 0% balance transfers for 1 to 2 years, even for existing customers. But we dont really get interest on savings, if you want interest you have to invest in shares really, or lock your money away for 3 years or more. People will have like 6 cards and just shift debt between them and never pay more than the 1% transfer fee, meaning that the only interest you can pay on short term loan is £60 I once purchased a new car with 5k balance transfer, and then after 2 years transferred it on to another 2 year deal and then another 2 years deal, so it prob cost me £100 in "interest" as the card i used at the time, just had £30 fee.
The most common fixed terms in the UK are 2 years and 5 years. After which you go back on the variable rate. Much like a phone contract coming to an end, or the introductory offer you get on any kind of service, once that term ends you are better off shopping around to find something cheaper. That can be a benefit of only fixing for 2 years if times are good. To benefit from being able to move to another bank that offers a better rate. In bad times your fixed term ends and the rate now is massive compared to what it was 2 or 5 (or 10 but that's less common) years ago, and now you have to suck up that price hike all at once
The common person has little appetite for parliamentary games. All we require is that the elected MPs actually do what we’ve all voted them in to do, if they don’t then they should go, simple. The cabinet in the UK have to be elected representatives (MPs). So the opposition party name a cabinet as well (shadow health secretary, shadow secretary of defence etc) to outline their own policies and question the governments policies.
I'm a French listener of your podcast, and this ep is as important to watch as it is hard to listen. I still feel so much anger about all this, how it was so poorly and badly managed, how our lives mattered (and still matter) so little to all those politicians. I want to see them pay for what they did.
I agree with listener Kristen (apologies if spelt wrong) in her assessment of the shadow AG shamefully not taking feedback well. Im a white New Zealander, so had to learn when you both pointed out the optics of the ad. The S-AG could heve done the same thing! The clenched jaw and sphincter defensive response didnt demonstrate any more humility or openness to opinions other than her own than a Tory. IMHO.
The sweet spot is probably somewhere in between the second and third recipes. Add in some of the techniques and ingredients that appeal to you from the third, and skip the ones that seem like too much.
First, I'm very glad to see Nish in my TH-cam feed again - I REALLY miss "Mock the Week." Hello, Coco - I don't know you, but I don't want to ignore you. Second, as an American who has lived the last seven years watching the antics of the tangerine fuehrer, let me warn you not to count too much on the "demise" and investigation of BoJo. Men like him and his orange U.S. counterpart are skilled at slithering out from under any trouble that may threaten them. Enjoy the schadenfreude while you can, but don't expect any lasting satisfaction from current events. If it happens, wonderful, but if it doesn't, don't be too disappointed.
The only saving grace is that it's slightly harder to become PM than President in so far as you have to be a Member of Parliament. In some senses, Boris will be like Trump - a constant wailing from the sidelines, generating headlines that make us tear our hair out - Johnson is, if anything, more of a media creation than Trump was. But the reality is that he was only ever able to become PM by convincing Tory MPs that he'd win them elections and that mojo is long gone. As has often been said, those who know Johnson best trust him least. Another key difference is that Johnson's fanatical supporters in the Tory party are a smaller group than Trump's support within the GOP, and the supporters he has got are without exception lightweight irrelevances (as opposed to senior Republicans who support Trump who should - but somehow aren't - seen that way).
Nish is a great guy. I'm not his biggest fan with his stand up (he's not bad, sometimes funny, but never my go-to when I need to smile) - but as a guy, unscripted and unrestrained, he's hilarious and wholesome (and sometimes brutal in his honesty).
As for the idea Boris decision wouldn't stand up in a court of law. The prosecution would simply call everyone he lied to and that's before they even get to his lying to parliament
Why Labour have that cut out cardboard Asda store manager streeting as the shadow Health Secretary and not this absolutely brilliant woman is something that makes no sense whatsoever.
this story should help restore faith in parliamemt. Johnson was ousted as pm by his party, ousted by the priviledge committee from westminster and rebuffed by the lords committee. if only every institution was as responsive.
Maybe if you have to write a book on Shakespeare... do it in your own time? Not in office hours, when you're being paid to do the day job? Just a thought.
The thing I would like to see from the investigation into the COVID response from government, is a focus on finding out why the government didn't lock down the borders, ban all passenger flights, personal flights, private flights, ban all transmission of persons through all ports, to the point where ONLY cargo, goods went in or out through a port, as the FIRST order of business. This would have DRASTICALLY reduced the chances of transmission of the disease into the country from outside, making it much easier to manage the relatively small number of infected people who were already in the country by the time WHO made its initial announcement. Of course, there are MANY other factors that need addressing, but this, I believe, is prime. Though I don't agree with the reasons the Tories give for being pro Brexit, they ARE the party that delivered it, and their key argument had to do with borders and immigration. Seems to me that they were happy to make a lot of noise about borders over a non-issue like illegal immigration, but unprepared to use border control for its intended purpose, when the rubber met the road, presumably for financial reasons. If it is discovered that the border lock I mentioned never happened in fullness (and it didn't, just in case anyone had forgotten. At no point were our borders one hundred percent locked off) because the Tories thought it would be too costly to businesses, I'd be both totally unsurprised, but also very tempted to involve myself in corrective civil disobedience, shaped like happy slapping the nearest Tory MP with a kerbstone.
The tragic thing for the UK, is if you look at the nations who lost the fewest people to covid, it was often island nations who initiated significant travel restrictions early on and required testing and quarantining for people traveling in and out of the country.
@@cbpd89 precisely. We had all the natural advantages in this situation, and rather than use those advantages to the benefit of the nation and its people, the government squandered those advantages wholesale.
Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Shadow Minister for Mental Health and MP for Tooting proves that politicians are not "all the same". Can anyone name a conservative who is as empathetic and has done as much good? No? Though not.
Why can't we have a Allin-Khan in every ministerial position? I.e. somebody who actually has experience (and absolutely fantastic experience with proper prestige and pedigree in their field) in that given domain. Say a farmer as agriculture secretary, an experienced and proven economist in charge of the treasury and so on... Every other walk of life you have to actually have experience and competence in the responsibilities of the job you're applying to. You'd think to be running the government branch in charge of that part of society, you'd have to be at the absolute top of that field. Anyways, let's talk about how desperate refugees fleeing conflict, famine and persecution who want to get a job so they can contribute to our society and provide more consumers for our businesses are a dangerous threat to our nation and should consume all our attention instead I guess...
Would love to know there thoughts now Boris resigned! And gets to walk away unpunished and gets to keep his huge pension he does not deserve... after WE unlawfully had to pay for his defence and he gets a 3 million pound house to retire into! *What are the thoughts now!?*
Matt Hancock isn't/wasn't so much out of touch as he just didn't care - why would we expect that cabinet of millionaires (billionaires?) to have any interest in the electorate beyond how they can fuel further wealth accumulation at the top?
Im so excited for the prospect of Boris and Trump teaming up for this morning on ITV....one of them has to be the woman presenter, so which one gets to wear Holly's outfits?;p
It's like, yehyeh Johnson is a liar, thr sky is blue.... Hope we now focus on the dodgy contracts, lack of PPE for front line workers, and justice for Covid bereved families. Tax payers' money should be recouped from the likes of Moane and anyone found guilty of wilfully mishandling process should be fined, stripped of their jobs and made to do community service.
You let Johnson off the hook slightly by saying the suspension *would* have led to a by election. The whole point is that it MIGHT have done, but he had several opportunities to try to stave that off and he fled (resigned) rather than try any of them, like the coward he is. First, the House of Commons had to vote (still does, on Monday) on whether to accept the Committee's recommendation and Johnson would have been allowed to put his case to try to persuade them not to. Even then, a by election would only take place if his constituency raised a petition to hold one, again allowing him space to try to persuade people and FINALLY he could of course try to win the seat back. He has done none of that. He can dish it out, but he can't take it, so he's run off to write for the Daily Heil instead. No one should ever listen to this lying liar ever again. He should not get a resignation "honours" list (or it should be revoked), he shouldn't get the former PM stipend and he should be told not to turn up at future events that former PMs usually attend (eg the Cenotaph) like a bad smell. Enough.
I agree with Coco on the Emily Thornberry thing. Emily is very clearly a perceptive woman who understood what you were saying, but she couldn't admit even the tiniest bit of fault with Labour or their ad campaign. Something like "You know, we really didn't intend for it to be taken that way, but I see where you're coming from. Perhaps we could have rephrased that a bit. I hope it's clear, though, what we were at least attempting to do, and perhaps you could help us change the wording to avoid the dog whistling." But when people get defensive they stop thinking clearly. What the two of you could do in the future, though, is not both jump in at the same time. There's no good response to accusations of racism because there's no way to prove your pluralistic bona fides. "But I'm not racist!" doesn't do it. "But I have many brown friends!" is worse. If two brown people are both suggesting that perhaps the group you're repping has been uncomfortably racially insensitive, it can be hard to quickly formulate a reasonable response. So I have some sympathy for Mrs. Thornberry, but she didn't handle that segment very well.
Three years of a covid enquiry? Why not break it down to its constituent parts, with a judge in charge of each. Run them simultaneously. Each judge then does a report. A lot quicker and for same money if not cheaper
Re: 25:00. Answers: There was an infectious disease that was killing people at a rate of 4.4% at that time. The risk to public safety was too great to allow for traditions (particularly physical contact IAW changing their outfit (what a body wears is not actually important)) in burial rites; I'm sorry it upset you but, get over it... do your honors/memorials in other ways, set up a new tradition. I still feel so much anger about all this, how it was so poorly and badly managed, how our lives mattered (and still matter) so little to all those politicians. I want to see them pay for what they did.
Dr Allin-Khan is so inspiring. She's the leader we need but don't deserve. I'd vote for her for PM tomorrow.
As an American i say "your guy did what? Oh, how quaint". Lol.
IMHO.
I just watched the GB News version of events.
Stuffing hell! It's like putting on Bad Apple convenient reality goggles.
Ahh GBeebies.. The impartial home of the Conservative and Ukip party, where free speech is practiced and yours is silenced.
“Left wing Barbie” amazing!
I think karma is having fun, with both Boris, and Donald.
Well. Yeah with Donald BUT one MAGA juror and it’s fucked.
As much as I like to hope, neither are gone. Torys get destroyed next year, guess who will offer to help pick up the pieces.
Karma would be a much more spectacularly gruesome reckoning than they're getting now, truly deserve the worst of the worst those two.
As soon as I saw Che Guevara, that was me gone 😂
Being thrown out is not punishment enough if there are no legal concequences.
Love you nish
If it could help him, Bojo would say the dog ate his homework!
I fully believe Rosena Allin-khan, unfortunately I have no faith in Keir Starmer to carry out such promises.
I have every respect for this MP but I will not vote for Starmer I have voted Labour since I was 18 this party is no longer labour
Oh where are my bread rolls…..duck you Cupid stunt.
As for the idea Boris decision wouldn't stand up in a court of law. The prosecution would simply call everyone he lied to and that's before they even get to his lying to parliament
Is it just me or is there no sound in this video?
Just you, it sounds splendid.
I have sound
Sounds great here
Love you guys. Nish - I will bake bread rolls especially for you :D
Can this lady be our Prime Minister please
Brilliant team, non apologetic Newsnight on steroids without the autocue. Pod save the UK.
Why Labour have that cut out cardboard Asda store manager streeting as the shadow Health Secretary and not this absolutely brilliant woman is something that makes no sense whatsoever.
Next Boris job. Hosting have i got news for you.😂
this story should help restore faith in parliamemt.
Johnson was ousted as pm by his party, ousted by the priviledge committee from westminster and rebuffed by the lords committee.
if only every institution was as responsive.
I can't hear the episode. Is the sound on?
Fixed, thanks
the fact that mps have second jobs is far worse than this in terms of undermining parliament.
I think the ban should inclue his children.
And in this respect Boris Johnson and the UK reacted well to Omicron and the statistics.
No audio
that would be the heat death of the universe.
The committee might end up recommending Johnson is suspended from Big Ben by his wing-back brogues
Haven't won, as a 29 yr old and 30 yr old got in for having done less then any other civil servant
Would love to know there thoughts now Boris resigned! And gets to walk away unpunished and gets to keep his huge pension he does not deserve... after WE unlawfully had to pay for his defence and he gets a 3 million pound house to retire into! *What are the thoughts now!?*
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Matt Hancock isn't/wasn't so much out of touch as he just didn't care - why would we expect that cabinet of millionaires (billionaires?) to have any interest in the electorate beyond how they can fuel further wealth accumulation at the top?
Totally agree about what nish said about George Osborne stfu for life
Hiya!
ITS A GOLF STATE
The state of Nadine Dorries.
Im so excited for the prospect of Boris and Trump teaming up for this morning on ITV....one of them has to be the woman presenter, so which one gets to wear Holly's outfits?;p
Would labour pay the junior Doctors fair pay, so they could stay.
Listening to this has crystallised for me that the UK is beyond saving.
HIYA!!!
Nadine knows her work on the faith agenda carries some weight, but no one wants to acknowledge the faith agenda or its evil beginnings.
I don’t understand isn’t he already gone?
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Boris was an awful PM
Disappointed to see Nish hold back on criticism of George Osbourne....
What happened to Osborne?? I assumed he tightened his belt so much it cut off his air supply
Surely it is possible to find a deserted island where we could house both Trump and B Johnson. Just a suggestion from the USA.
Enough.
Why are you advertising crappy Private Mental Health Care?
I have the same audio issue as others.
Edit: works on my laptop, no audio on moble.
Edit: I guess it works now.

But Diane Abbot was reprimanded and booted for exaclty that.. pi55es me off no end.
@@DJWESG1 I'm not sure it was just that one thing, but I don't follow British politics that closely.
Three years of a covid enquiry? Why not break it down to its constituent parts, with a judge in charge of each. Run them simultaneously. Each judge then does a report. A lot quicker and for same money if not cheaper
Change back PM like Israel
I understand that this woman is of a different culture than my own, I also make fun of other cultures for other useless beliefs and I accept criticism of people questioning my superstitions.
‘killing people at a rate of 4.4%’ 😂
good lord, you’ve been properly menticided 🤦🏽♂️
