    “I judge them by what they’ve done for my town nothing else” is the definition of sport washing… unreal to see it so openly displayed 😮

      He will probably be out of Manchester when the bill comes due, and there is always a bill.

      And they just let it lie at that. Weak questioning, no accountability, not the pod’s best showing by half

      I think he's saying, if central govt/Westminster aren't going to give us money I'll take it from elsewhere. He would probably say he hasn't got the luxury of saying no because there aren't any other offers and he's got people without roofs over their head or food on the table, not least because Manchester is somewhere people want to live and they're having to handle the London migration and its impact on availability and price. 🤷

    Fuuuuck, I adore this podcast. Politics isn't just sour ministers and dour commentators, it's good friends griping on the sofa then having a laugh. Keep up the good work you beautiful people.

    The Bank of England raising interest rates isn't really targeted at individual consumers, I would imagine. Perhaps it's different in the UK, but here in the US the Fed raising interest rates mostly slows down business expansion and large investments in securities, putting a drag on the economy overall by making the large piles of money a little slower. Do you know what's causing your high inflation? Over here it was about 50% corporate profiteering with some contributions from the pent up covid demand and supply chain issues.

    • @jsrodman
      @jsrodman ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The profiteering is lots of places. In the UK, a big chunk of the profiteering is in things that should be publically run like power and heat, but have been given out to pirates. And yes, that is inflationary, and the UK govt should stop it but choose not to because of cronyism.

    The more I see of him, the more I would kill to have Andy Burnham being on the ticket for the next PM for Labour instead of Starmer, I'd vote for Burnham because I think he'd genuinely do a damn good job. I'd vote for Starmer for no other reason than to get the Tories out.

    • @Kaltagstar96
      @Kaltagstar96 ปีที่แล้ว

      @thomasandrewclifford Like, I don't even like Starmer and it sucks because there's no real political parties that I'd feel fine voting for, it's never good when the only reason you're voting for someone is so that they can kick the current party out.

    I take Andy Burnham's point, and agree, that asking him if he would return to Westminster sort of implies that it is the BEST or ONLY place to do real politics.
    However, many of us also wonder or hope that he might return there because *we don't live in Manchester* and we envy having a decent politician influencing what goes on in our lives!
    OTOH, I do think returning would have a chilling effect on how he conducts the day to day of his political work and there probably ought to be a real discussion about why that is.

    Can any manchester locals (manchesterites?) tell us a bit or two about whether bringing the busses under public control is likely to bear out in any sort of changes?
    I ask as a foreigner who cares a lot about public transit and feels like reliable frequent service has a huge impact on outcomes for lower incomes and quality of life. Not enough for sure, but a sorely needed trend.

    On Windrush, can I recommend some reading? Akala's Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire was excellent. I need to re-read it actually, memory needs a refresh, wondering how much it influenced a lot of how I see things these days.
    I love seeing Coco and Nish Nish's passion and Coco's bubbliness is infectious. About time a watchable show about UK politics is produced. I swear they make TV either too insider or too boring for most to bother turning in. PMQs? Andrew Marr? Pass.

    As much as we appreciate the importance of changing the country from the ground up you can’t say that we need proportional representation and prop up a Labour leader that shuts down all consideration of electoral reform. Everyone’s always talking about electability but Starmer is not electable, he’s the embodiment of second choice and we need somebody that people other than university Labour society presidents will be willing to get behind

    So disappointed in Burnham. He champions his city well but his complete unwillingness to discuss the ethics of where the money comes from was quite sad to watch. Also, it is well documented that Manchester's housing affordability is becoming very problematic, but he acted like it was all breezy.

    "Can mayors save the UK?"
    assuming he doesn't get chased all over France by a parole officer who apparently has nothing better to do and no other bread thieves to nab, i think his chances are pretty good.
    oh he should also keep an eye on any foremen he has, especially ones with a large percentage of women employees. maybe instate paid family leave in his factories. medical leave and childcare too while we're at it.

    Nice try by Andy, but it's far more likely to be the owners of *luxury* flats who can also afford to go to court to try to get a music venue closed.
    Having moved in when the venue *already existed* though, really ought to be a slam dunk for the case failing.

    You just got done comparing your inflation rate to Italy, and with the same breath you’re implying your national government and Truss is to blame. Uhh. Is she also to blame for inflation here in Canada? The US? Come on!
