Will Moy from fact checkers, Full Fact, talks about getting politicians to correct inaccurate statements. And with a general election on the horizon next year, Will calls for an end to “bullshit manifestos”, and reveals how AI could help in the battle against the lies.
Nish and Coco welcome the new Renters Reform Bill, which has finally been published thanks to the efforts of campaigners like Anny Cullum of the tenants union Acorn. But does it go far enough? The Bill doesn't really address rocketing rents, so they’re asking if rent control is the next battleground.
Plus, the National Conservatism Conference gets Nish’s blood boiling, although he does have a rare good word for Jacob Rees-Mogg. We also introduce you to Marvel’s newest superhero: Ombudsman, and find out why Coco thinks the Tories have made her dumb.

Fellow American here. I've heard "Talk shit, get hit" since at least 2011. "Fuck around and find out" is both more recent, and doesn't really mean the same thing.

@@mikeamarilio By that logic, culture would never evolve. The combination of stronger language and a much more subtle threat clearly makes the broader "Fuck around and find out" the superior saying, IMO. Then again, I'm not american.
The judge gave us 14 days to move out after a no-fault eviction. I've been living in budget hotels with my elderly mother now for 5 weeks. Our savings are just flying out the window. I'm glad others won't experience this. We were made "homeless" so someone could have 2 homes. I hope that judge is happy with himself. And the judge ruled that we had to pay the court fees too.

Coco, you're not the only person feeling exhausted by our modern era who retreats into "lowbrow" movies and/or TV, it doesn't mean you're getting dumber, it means you're a kind person who cares about the state of the world! We all need different things from our entertainments at different times in our lives, and right now a lot of us need some simple comfort food, which is just what Fast X is.
UK voices are so interesting. There’s so much vocal diversity in such a small landmass
I'm an American living in the Netherlands and I'm shocked by how many rights renters have. In the US, the landlords can do anything they like. Conversely, the Netherlands changed the rental law in 2016 to allow short-term leases (meaning the landlord can end the lease at the end of two years without the possibility of renewal). Which is still a LOT better than anything in the US. Before then, all leases were "permanent" (meaning the tenants decide when the lease ends, and the landlords can't make you leave). Just this week, the NL government voted to end this new law because too many landlords were raising rents ridiculously at the end of the two year contracts. As a Yank, it completely baffles me that the government cares that I used to have to move every two years and my rent would go up. Now I'm in a permanent lease, I pay less than I did last year, and I can stay here forever if I want. This is the way you do it, UK and US. Stop making your renters fodder for the money-grubbing class!
Some US cities hav3 had reasonable renter policiee for 40 plus years ,buut nowhere in the US is there a comprehensive focus on housing policy like there is in the Netherlands.

If that real time fact checking bit can be used widely, I’d love to see a debate format where the mic’s just cut out or the sound gets replaced by the circus theme every time a politician lies. I feel like it would encourage the politicians to be honest, and if we can come up with a funny enough sound replacement, maybe we could encourage more ordinary people to tune in.
4:27 Brazilian here, we don't have a "talk shot get hit" but we have something similar. We have "Fala o que quer, ouve o que não quer" which means "If you say whatever you want, you'll hear whay you don't want to hear" which is a nice way to tell someone to shut it.
On the other hand, we also have "dedo no cu e gritaria" which literally means "a finger up the asshole and lots of screaming" and it is used to described a chaotic situation. Maybe useful to UK politics! Love the show

Excellent show, really glad to have a UK version of Pod Save. I've signed the Full Fact petition, and am considering becoming a regular donor to them. Fact checking politicians (and organisations) is crucial work, and will only become moreso as Ai generated material crowds out real news.

Landlords in Toronto definitely do the loophole thing saying they are selling to get people out or even worse they claim a family member needs it, the family member never moves in and the current tenant has to leave.
I assume a legal suit could be brought, but it's never worth it.
With rents being really high one would think that it would be an incentive to build allot of new rental apartments and undercut all the other landlords and still make a killing.

We got a Section 21 on the morning my Mum died. Not the best day of my life, I must say. This is a good win, but a lot more needs to be done. Hate to say it, but a radical overhaul is needed. For all you Centerists and liberals out there that didn't vote Labour in 2017 and '19: You got what you wanted. We need rent controls, and much more high quality, high density social housing, and a ban on owning more than two houses. Check out how it's done elsewhere in the world, particularly Sweden and Austria.

I would make it an actual crime to knowingly lie when in public office. With jail time, however if they unintentionally mislead and immediately correct the record publically then no crime has been committed. Unintentional but not corrected a large fine in the tens of thousands. And set up a permanent (cross party and with members of the public) committee to handle the cases. I always assumed we stole it from the Swedee, but from the Dutch is probably more likely.
It doesn't quite fit the cultural values of the uk or us as well, sonwe don't have as many, and often theyre sort of a weird appendix to processes instead of well integrated and important.

Maybe stop spreading weird Eurovision conspiracy theories? The likelihood of ABBA wanting anything to do with Eurovision next year is about zero. Eurovision hasn't ever been part of their core identity it was just a step up to the international stage which they really needed because (surprise!) they weren't actually that popular in Sweden.
Like, are people truly, honestly shocked that the national juries didn't vote for a contestant who can't sing (he is apparently a rapper, but sing he cannot) and was styled like off brand Måneskin with an even more off brand Rammstein-pop song? Yes, it was fun and exciting but generally during Eurovision the winners, including those with elaborate, strange or funny performances, are genuinely good singers with good (didn't say great) songs. That does not describe Käärijä.

It's never about stopping politicians from lying. It's about getting people involved in politics that aren't sociopathic narcissists.
It's a bit of a Catch 22 because the ego that spawns the motivation is also the narcissism that has them do it for the purpose of power for power's sake, rather than the advancement of a society. At least this seems to be the case with those that are the representatives. The pencil-pushing, career government agents are the real heroes, but they often don't have the power they need to really make a significant difference. If anything, they, too, are always fighting those narcissists as best they can with their limited resources.
