Hi John, thanks for the instructional video. Q1: do you shoot architecture and if so do you use the grid function Q2: what setups do you use for outdoor portraiture, any different from studio? Cheers.
Hi Rob. I don't shoot Architecture. For outdoor portraits I like to use the auto EVF brightness, which wasn't an option when I made this video. The reason why is if you use manual and switch from one environment to the other and forget to change it, you'll have troubling using it to judge exposure.
Great video and nice to see another 4:3 portrait shooter! Its the best aspect ratio for portraits IMO. Regarding your question about the EFCS, they are talking about f/1.2 lenses. My RP only has an EFCS and if Im shooting f/1.2 I have to watch my shutter speed outdoors on a sunny day. Once you hit 1/2000s, you will get ugly artifacts in you photo, like someone took an erase tool to parts of the background. Of course you can use a ND filter, but I rarely shoot at f/1.2 though. Im usually around f/2.8 and rarely go wider than f/2.2 You would be fine using EFCS with an f/2.8 lens or In studio.
Thanks! I changed to overlaying 8x10 lines from the blue menus. Is the EFCS issue the shutter speed or the f-stop? I am really not sure what this shutter mode really gets you only than i think 1/250 f a second sync (if I remember correctly).
@@JohnGress you probably know this by now but there is a way to always see the electronic level in the view finder and/or the screen. I just got this R5 but can't remember how I set it for that. if I can figure it out I'll post it here
Thank you... I am going to be doing a curtain/photo booth in our reunion. I will have probably 60 or so shots. How do I keep track of each individual so I can send them their photo? I will be emailing their photo to them. I'm planing to write the number of the shot down to their name on a spreadsheet. Is there a setting that I use to make the tracking easier? Can get the camera to name each file/shot with easy numbers? 1,2, 3, 4. 5. etc...? That way I can write on the spreadsheet that Bob was 1, Sue was 2, Tina was 3, Greg was 4, etc.
Hey John, great video. Could you possibly do a tethered shooting test? As a commercial photographer myself, I find it's often difficult/rare to find reviews that touch on wired tethering performance. It's especially important to get an idea of how the tethered connection holds over time as the camera heats up.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I just went from an 80D to the R6! I love it! I have a few questions. 1)Can you tell me what picture style you suggest using? I am shooting indoor natural light portraits and hoping to get some lights soon. 2) What is your setting for High ISO speed NR? 3) Can you explain exposure simulation? I did a product shoot of some clothing at a studio I rented and we had problems with the camera focusing on the dress. We used studio lights and it was fairly light in there. It took the studio manager about a half hour to figure it out and I don't know what he did to make it work. He said it was the autofocus in live view. I don't know if that was the case or if it was the exposure simulation, which I really don't understand what that is. Thank you
Thanks Cheryl, I always shoot in RAW for my final images so many of the settings don't affect my images. 1) standard, but this only affects jpegs, 2) default, it also only affects jpegs. 3. Exposure simulation shows you a preview of the exposure of your image when shooting available light. It shouldn't be used when shooting with flash as most of the time it will just show you a black or dark frame. I hope this helps!
John Gress It being a photography camera vs a 4K/8K utilization is the main reason for the purchase. However, I’m hoping that with a firmware update that pesky overheating issue (if actually a real thing), will be fixed. Regardless, I’m very excited to about the dynamic range, the 45mp, and IBIS! Just hope my laptop can take the MB!
Ha! The 4KHQ matches the C200 raw footage really well. I don’t think I’ll need much 8k. But I probably said that about the C200 raw 4K. I’m. Way excited about having the AF and MPs!
Thanks! It's not likely because I don't shoot sports anymore. But when I did, case 4 was the way to go. However this video may help: th-cam.com/video/lrZY0ei2unc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for your video .. I have a question; I'm trying to find out what RAW sizes there are (Large, Medium, Small) for the R5. I can't find out anywhere if this can be changed. Which RAW formats are there ?! I have also the same question for fps, which fps settings are available (The R5 is not yet delivered in the Netherlands)
RAW images are only full size in the regular RAW and C-RAW formats. Single, The Drives modes are Continuous High+ (Max 12fps), Continuous High 8-6fps, Continuous Low 3fps, Self timer (2s+remote, 10s+remote). English manual p451. The electronic verses mechanical shutter mode, battery level, shutter speed and more affect the frame rate in each mode.
Hello John, coming from a landscape photography perspective how would you set this up for that? Also, my fave lens is F2.8 24-70mm. Do you know if they have made a new lightweight one for the R5? And if not, do they intend to do so? I thank you for your time on this matter...
I used my friend's RF 24-105 for a shoot the other day and the combination seemed very light. I think the only substantive difference wold be that you'll be using one of the regular focus points and enjoying the megapixels,
Excellent video! Question: when you are shooting in the studio stopped down (say f/8 or more), do find that the Eye-AF is still as accurate as it is at a wider aperture? (I've heard mixed reports about this, and I know with my Nikon Zs, the wider apertures definitely produce more accurate autofocus.)
Prehaps wider aperture lenses provide better results as focus is probably occurring with the lens wide open and then the camera stops down for the exposure.
John, this was very helpful. I still have one issue. When I shoot in manual mode in my studio with limited ambient light, with studio lights (ISO 100, 1/125, F 11) my viewfinder goes so dark I can not see my subject. Any thoughts what I am doing wrong? Thanking you in advance for any direction you can give me.
Hi John. i am in a kind of odd situation. used the R5 in Studio. Installed Lightroom (9.4 /CRA 12.4). I do get very pure color rendering .. not sure where originated. Parallel recorded JPG's look defintely better. Reinstalled LR CC etc..no big diff. Can you recommend Camera Profiles others, then momentarely offered by adobe.. ( i must admit - its the first time having troubles with LR CC and a new camera and therefore not much clue what is going on and what it takes.)
Hi Arthur, If Adobe included Camera Matching color profiles in their release yesterday, I would have recorded a video right away. Unfortunately, they didn't, so were stuck for now with this less than optimal Adobe colors. I have been looking for a 3rd party solution, but I haven't found one yet. LMK if you find one.
@@JohnGress many thanxs.. so at least i do not feel to stupid.. i will investigate (i have to.. i am stuck with a (payed) project).. the customer has patiences (and time) about it and supports the idea of using the R5.. but i am anxious to go on.
Hey John! Great video, thank you. For some reason, my screen or viewfinder do not react to when I change aperture, shutter, or ISO. Is there a way to change that? When I actually take the picture, it is exposed accordingly, but I can't preview the exposure on the screen.
John, about 5 years ago I could tether my trusty 5Dmk2 to my laptop and shoot via Eos Utility - straight into Lightroom. It was a terrific marriage, every corporate headshot was (I was doing around 4-5 a day) came out cropped and in the colour space, sharpened, toned and enhanced simply. The clients were only too happy to pay immediately upon seeing themselves in a better light than what they were used to with other inferior photographers. Now that I’m retired, (not by choice), I am shooting various projects in my shed and I cannot connect to Lightroom with the R5. Most frustrating. My macbook is only three years old and fully updated, any thoughts please? Cheers!
When you shoot with a mirrorless camera in the studio, you won't see anything in the viewfinder because it is not a DLSR. That means you have to change this in the menu to see anything in the viewfinder. I miss this topic in your video or I missed it. Maybe you can explain this.
In retrospect I could have explained it better. First you have to use the mechanical or the first curtain electronic shutter - th-cam.com/video/pPPq06dkeqU/w-d-xo.html, second you have to disable exposure simulation - th-cam.com/video/pPPq06dkeqU/w-d-xo.html
If you set it to sRGB it is my understanding that you are limiting the color space since Adobe RGB is a wider Gamut. Is setting it to sRGB essentially a good preview mode with all of the color Gamut in tact in the RAW or does it actually limit the gamut of the Raw? Not sure I'm explaining that well. I'd always rather start with the full gamut then dumb down if needed.
I just got my R5 and set af-on and star buttons to switch from one point AF to Eye AF. The problem that I have is that now I have to press Star and Shutter button at the same time when taking portraits. I would like to have continous tracking enabled when I press that star button so I do not need to keep it pressed. Any suggestions ? I searched in custom buttons menu and could not find the option to assign any button to change Continuous AF.
I pressed asterisk and the shutter button together for years and you get used to it. But you could try turning on continuous AF with this configuration. The downside is the camera will hut for focus constantly support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART178277
Can you do one for Sport photography? (In my case is Aviation). I don't know why but when I took some pictures the camera stop to take pictures I guess it was the buffer, not sure how to overcome that.. Thank!
It could be that you are shooting photos faster than the camera can write them to the card. The speed of the card could matter. So writing to a CFexpress or a 60v SD card could be the solution.
Hi John. I noticed that on AF - 1 the AF operation is set to MF. When I select it, I have 2 options witch are ON SHOT AF or SERVO. What is the difference between ONE SHOT AF and MF?
Did you find a way to automatically connect to EOS Utility on PC? Always use instant jpg transfer for a preview on a big screen this way. 5DM4 just auto-connected after turning on or battery switch. R5 needs a manual connect, seems very annoying. Also no more power saving screen-off if it has an active connection to EOS Utility.
I had to turn on the anti-flicker while shooting NYFW a couple of months ago. It was the weirdest thing. BUT this camera is freaking amazing. I shot 1200 images for one designer on High Continuous as a test and 95% of them were in focus.
@@JohnGress no, actually I was using the mechanical shutter. I tried the electronic shutter and hated it. The lighting we had there was very weird. My camera wasn't the only one seeing banding when shooting over 1/60 sec. The shows official photographer was having issues with her 5D mk IV.
@@JohnGress Also, something you may want to take a look at for cropping and framing your shots. Instead of using the Cropping/Aspect Ratio function, take a look at the Custom Functions Menu 4, the first item has Add cropping Information, and in there you can add in 4:5 which matches the 8x10 format you like, it will add lines on the display where a 4:5 would fit. It won't mask the display like the Cropping/Aspect Ratio setting, but it does work for the ratio you'd like. I spent the past 1 1/2 digging through the menus trying to see what else I needed to add to my custom menus.
Thanks! I will check it out too! I also hear there is another function that causes the play black or menus to never be in the EVF. Right now its messing with my head pressing play and * every-time to look at the menus on the back of the camera.
@@JohnGress are you talking about the menu screen where you can change all the settings with all the different pages being on the back screen only, but it’s showing up in the VF?
To expand on this. Expo Sim will show you a black screen if that is what your camera settings will result in not simply because you are using flash. In studio when shooting with flash, most of the time the camera is set to block out all ambient light (natural/room light). So the expo Sim will show this blackness. Turning this off will allow you to see your subject and frame your shots.
Unless you consider the camera and grip to be one unit called the camera. Nevertheless, can the batteries in the grip be recharged without removing them from the grip with usb-c cable?
I'm an amateur and tried using my R5 at my camera club with studio flash and the reading from the flash meter said f11 at ISO 100 and set the camera shutter speed to 1/250 sec sync speed. (The same method I used on my 5D mk 3). However, using these settings on the R5 meant that the image was so dark, that I couldn't see anything, as the electronic viewfinder doesn't take into account that the flash is going to give the correct exposure. Am I doing something wrong with the settings? How can I get round this?
You need to turn off exposure simulation. I have my depth of field preview button set up so that exposure simulation comes on when I press the button. Also with the mechanical shutter, the Sync Speed is 1/200
when shooting in manual mode in the studio, my viewfinder goes dark when I half press the button to focus and shoot. How do I switch that off so I can see the subject? it only does it in manual mode, not in A or T
Well, you probably don't know, but you can't convert from sRGB to Adobe RGB, because sRGB doesn't have much color information. Therefore, it is better to take photos in RGB color profile and then export files for webrowsers in sRGB color profile.
If you have continuous AF enabled it will be doing this all the time even if you do not have the shutter half pressed. Buy more batteries or disable this feature.
again me ;-) because i value your channel very high. I was trying of having a fast change from singe shot to H+ without taking my eyes of the EVF. __The only way i found was to assing 3 almost similar settings to C2, C2, C3 and have the Camera on 'auto aktualisieren‘ , so i can change ISO very fast and the C-Setting will adapt an setting the changing so tit steps thru the modes.. in case you have an easier way.. let me know pls.

Hi Rob. I don't shoot Architecture. For outdoor portraits I like to use the auto EVF brightness, which wasn't an option when I made this video. The reason why is if you use manual and switch from one environment to the other and forget to change it, you'll have troubling using it to judge exposure.
Thank you too!
thanks for putting this together, very informative

Thank you so much!
Such a nice video well explained. Loved it
Thank you so much!
Very well done! Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience and for staying on point!

1,2, 3, 4. 5. etc...? That way I can write on the spreadsheet that Bob was 1, Sue was 2, Tina was 3, Greg was 4, etc.

can you tell me a bit of how to set R5 to ext. flash shooting ?
You have to turn off exposure simulation and use something other than the electronic shutter.
@@JohnGress Thanks a lot ;-)
Great video. Can you confirm if the R5 can record RAW stills simultaneously to both cards?
Yes, it can!
Hey John, great video. Could you possibly do a tethered shooting test? As a commercial photographer myself, I find it's often difficult/rare to find reviews that touch on wired tethering performance. It's especially important to get an idea of how the tethered connection holds over time as the camera heats up.
Thanks! I just got the proper Tethertools Cable so I will try that out soon.

What are some of the things you would like me to research?
Thank you! Going to get an R6 and this is helpful for that too.
Ok great! Thank you and congratulations!😁

I have a question;
I'm trying to find out what RAW sizes there are (Large, Medium, Small) for the R5. I can't find out anywhere if this can be changed. Which RAW formats are there ?! I have also the same question for fps, which fps settings are available
(The R5 is not yet delivered in the Netherlands)
Thanks!!
that's a great tutorial. Thanks much. Is there a way to transfer the settings from one camera to another? Copy on card for example? I didn't find it.
Thank you so much! Sadly, I don't think that is possible.

I am glad you found the solution!

Hi John, Love your IG photos and tutorials! Wondering if you're still shooting in Mechanical or have switched to 1st-curtain Electronic?
Thanks! I have continued to use Mechanical. I read on the Canon Europe website that you only get 13bit color and not 14 with first curtain.
Adobe just updated Lightroom/Photoshop now to include Raw files for the R5. WooHoo finally... that should definitely improve workflow exponentially.
yeah, but they didn't include Camera matching color profiles. Whomp whomp. If they did you would be watching that video from me right now =P
@@JohnGress wait not really familiar with that... is that where you choose sRGB or is it selecting the Picture Style Characteristics?
It’s getting the same picture style in Lightroom as your camera.

Hi Arthur, If Adobe included Camera Matching color profiles in their release yesterday, I would have recorded a video right away.

I believe the color space only affects the jpegs. RAW should be all of the RAW data.
I don't know why but when I took some pictures the camera stop to take pictures
I guess it was the buffer, not sure how to overcome that..
Thank!
It could be that you are shooting photos faster than the camera can write them to the card. The speed of the card could matter. So writing to a CFexpress or a 60v SD card could be the solution.
@@JohnGressThanks, I got a V90 card, 90mg.
do you use the same san disk card in both slots?
The camera doesn't take two of the same cards.
Hi John. I noticed that on AF - 1 the AF operation is set to MF. When I select it, I have 2 options witch are ON SHOT AF or SERVO. What is the difference between ONE SHOT AF and MF?
One shot means that is focus until focus is achieved and then it stops. MF means that the lens is set to manual focus.
Some strange settings u use, but that's all personal I guess
Very well explained though, should be very clear for everybody
Thanks!
How did you set it for studio flash so you can still see your subject inside?

Did you find a way to automatically connect to EOS Utility on PC? Always use instant jpg transfer for a preview on a big screen this way. 5DM4 just auto-connected after turning on or battery switch. I had to turn on the anti-flicker while shooting NYFW a couple of months ago. It was the weirdest thing.
BUT this camera is freaking amazing. I shot 1200 images for one designer on High Continuous as a test and 95% of them were in focus.
Were you using an electronic shutter when you needed to use anti-flicker?
I’m confused as to why you would only want exposure simulation on temporarily by button. It’s so handy to me to just know all of the time.
Exposure simulation will show you a black evf / screen while shooting flash.
To expand on this. Expo Sim will show you a black screen if that is what your camera settings will result in not simply because you are using flash. In studio when shooting with flash, most of the time the camera is set to block out all ambient light (natural/room light). So the expo Sim will show this blackness. Turning this off will allow you to see your subject and frame your shots.
what do you think of shooting in C RAW?
I've never tried it and the space savings really isn't a concern for me.
Can you recharge the batteries in camera with the battery grip?
If you’re using a grip, there isn’t a battery in the camera.
Unless you consider the camera and grip to be one unit called the camera. Nevertheless, can the batteries in the grip be recharged without removing them from the grip with usb-c cable?
Sorry, Yes as long as the camera is turned off.
Also with the mechanical shutter, the Sync Speed is 1/200
Wow, so simple! Thanks for the help and quick reply John, much apppreciated@@JohnGress
when shooting in manual mode in the studio, my viewfinder goes dark when I half press the button to focus and shoot. How do I switch that off so I can see the subject? it only does it in manual mode, not in A or T
I think you need to disable exposure simulation which I think is under red camera 7.
@@JohnGress Thanks John, thats exactly where I eventually found it
Well, you probably don't know, but you can't convert from sRGB to Adobe RGB, because sRGB doesn't have much color information. Therefore, it is better to take photos in RGB color profile and then export files for webrowsers in sRGB color profile.
That is true if you're only shooting JPEGs as that setting only effects those files, but as far as I know, RAW files sill maintain all of the data.
If you have continuous AF enabled it will be doing this all the time even if you do not have the shutter half pressed. Buy more batteries or disable this feature.
That’s where eco mode or auto power off come in.
Cropping Aspect ratio - Have you looked at Custom Menu 4:- Add cropping information ? You can set 4:5 in that option
I don't have the camera in front of me, but that sounds like something I do now and figured out after I made this video.
