Great job Jared. Very helpful. For those of you that are thinking about taking a critique from Jared do it. It is well worth the money and I learned a ton in 45 minutes alone with him
Thanks for this! Had mine for a little while now, but double checked my settings against yours and made some useful changes. I would really appreciate if when you went over these menus you discuss the things you don't change in a little more detail, so we at least know what it is that gets left as is, or not enabled. I know the videos are already very long and take hella much time to make so I understand completely why you do it this way though. Maybe make a separate video going over those settings once and why they shouldn't be used, or when it is better to do something else. Than you could refer to that and leave it out in subsequent releases. Thanks so much for spending the time on this! It's so helpful for so many people!
Release Shutter Without Lens is required when using a non-Canon lens that is not detected by the camera (like a vintage m42 lens, or other lens with an adapter). I also saw that and thought that sounded really stupid... Then I could not get it to take a picture with my Pentacon 135mm until I enabled Release Shutter Without Lens.
Very good video. One comment. The setting "Release shutter w/o lens" is useful if you are using an old lens that is not recognized by the camera. In this case the camera won' take a photo if this setting is off.
NGL I watched this video twice. Once before I got the camera thinking I'd remember what you said. And now a second time now that I have the camera. Thanks for the help Jared. Your videos have been very informative and helped me choose the r5ii as my new camera (I upgraded from the rebel t7i. I needed a photo and video camera.)
there is a very easy way to take off the hotshoe cover on the R5ii. You'll notice there is an arrow pointing toward your body. Put your fingernail in the gap behind the arrow and then push the button toward you in the same direction as the arrow. so you're not pushing downward on the button.
OMG you just made my day I have been waiting for you to make this video so thank full for you to share your knowledge with us I love your videos and podcasts always walk a way a little bit smarter so thank you 😊 😊
I was following along to see what you set differently. I noticed in your display discussion around 1:39:39 you have both cards as RAW, where mine only has RAW next to the Express card. I assume you changed something not in the video to have it do RAW on the SD card? I couldn't figure out how you did that. Curious which button you use for switching to Single vs Continuous options, and is it a toggle or only in effect while you press the button? I've used by AF On for Meter Start/AF, * for AF eye detection, and the one to the right of that for AF point selection.
01:03:07 is where he talks about setting the camera up so it shoots raw to both cards. He didnt switch it there but did after to Record to Multiple so thats why it appears that way later on in the video so Rec to Multiple is the setting you want, not Standard
Cheers mate. I just got mine last night and this morning I’m otw to the airport with camera happily packed and I have no idea how to use it. Been using Sony for the last 7 years. I guess I found the perfect video to download for the flight
Always a great User's Guide! Unfortunately for purposes of THIS video, I'm selling my Canon R5 mk.ii and buying a new (original) R5 to replace it. (The R5ii is a great camera, but I actually prefer the original R5 for the photo work that I do. Your mileage will probably vary.)
You mentioned you didn't know why you would set it to release shutter without a lens attached. I found when doing reverse macro with an old manual focus lens that it didn't recognise there was a lens attached, and I had to set it to release without a lens to get it to shoot. I'm guessing it will be the same if mounted to a microscope by a T2 mount, or just with an old manual lens attached via an adaptor?
I was following along and just picked up mine Friday. I noticed under Image Stabilizer mode (menu) I have a 3rd setting for focal length. I am thinking that is just because when I was looking at the menu there was no lens attached at the time?
Jared, Can you show how the "Blur/Out-of-Focus image detection" works? This could be pretty handy when making panning photo's during a race event. Could literely safe me lots of time importing and culling images.
Thank you Jared!!! A question: I recently got an R5 Mark II, and I noticed that in complete silence the machine makes a very slight noise. My old R5 did that too, but it was much less, does the one you have do that too? …is that normal?
Quick question: I notice that you do not have the dreaded "enable touch screen" icon showing up on your info display. I can turn it off in edit screen along with other things, like battery life, mode etc but I JUST want that particular icon not to show up on screen. EVER. Same thing with turning on or off buttons, I can't turn them on individually. I want the touch screen icon off ALL of my info pages because I want to turn buttons on for everything else on a separate info screen
Thanks so much for posting this! I was hoping that you would have configured this camera using back button focus , and using C1-C2-C3 possibly with C1 and C2 for stills and C3 for video.
Regarding IS in camera and body, Jared states you can use both. I am using the RF 24=105l F4 lens and I can't get in camera IS to work, (it is greyed out), even if I turn the lens IS off. Have I missed something in the video and if I did not any suggestions?
If you have IS on in the lens then IBIS is automatically turned on in the body. You cant turn one off and keep other one on. Its all or nothing with canon RF unless you have a non-IS, 3rd party or manual lens
@@stepheneckert4006 Understood. In the video, Jared has the IS screen on, but mine is greyed out. If It is on by default, then I should be able to turn both the lens and camera IS off, but I can't.
@@theguydaveso he has a lens on that doesnt have a dedicated IS switch (50 1.8) so you control it through the body which is why his isnt grayed out. The pro “L” lenses like the 24-105 have a dedicated IS switch that controls and overrides the menu IBIS option which is why its grayed out. Canon makes it very confusing unfortunately
In addition to being in AUTO, the other thing that makes menus appear different is having the knob on the left side set to MOVIE rather than PHOTO. The items change based on that mode as well.
Hi I bought a Canon R5 mark 2 camera today. I turned on the camera, put on a manual lens, put in the card and I can't take any photos or videos with the camera, I click to take the photo/video but it doesn't. Can you help me, or tell me what I'm doing wrong?
interesting , my camera seems to be stuck on manual focus .at first it work on the blue focus but i used a ef 70-200mm F 2.8 L lens and changed the lens to manual but i don't have the lens on the camera now and it is still stuck on manual. i had a haunch and i have just attached by 400mm 5.6l ef lens and then went in the menu and it gave me the proper menus , was a real eye opener that the green boxes don't focus because i was trying out the two lens and noticed the green boxes and also that the eye tracking didn't seem to work D'OH! much appreciated vid
Anyone have any idea when LR will add the R5m2 profile? Got my camera in Aug and still seeing a lot of noise when editing CRAW/RAW images. Last LR update was a few weeks ago.
mine came yesterday, I'm using ef lenses with the meike adapter VND drop in, going through the video following setting each of the menu screens, i have a greyed out 'focus mode' at the bottom of the 'AF operation/area' menu on the second (pink) list of sub menus??? I see jared can change his in this video, does anyone know why mine is greyed out and not selectable? when i click set for the reason why i get the message saying "Use the lens switch to set IS" - is this only an option on the dedicated RF lenses - FYI i have the EF 85mm F1.2L mk II on with the meike adapter atm.....thank you for any help with this, loving the camera so far
#igothisfar Thanks Jared! This was really helpful and I have improved my workflow. Hundreds of hours were saved! I decided to remap the "RATE" button to "protect/voice memo" so I can protect the shots I like while deleting all the photos I don't want from shooting 30fps in 1 fell swoop.
haha, I have to say the hot shoe cover is misleading, if you ignore the little button, directly push the lens side of the cover just like what you did (except without press the button), it will just like a clip-in-n-off ;)
I’m surprised he doesn’t know why cars have a separate AF mode. For those wondering, without it, the AF would find the eye of the driver and the car would be out of focus.
NOBODY MENTIONES THAT R5 Mark II DOESN'T HAVE FRAME SCAN ADJUST (like in Lumix cameras e.g.), NO IBIS HIGH RES SHOTS (like the previous R5 cameras and Lumix, Sony cameras), NO SSD EXTERNAL RECORDING OPTIONS (like Lumix and other brands), IT HAS 1 EV WORST DYNAMIC RANGE THAN R5 (iss predecessor) AND WAY WORST SHADOW AND CHROME NOISE! BASED ON THE LATEST TEST AF DIDN'T IMPROVED, AT LEAST NOT IN THE CURRENT FIRMWARE.

I ordered in august and still waiting 😞
but not the gods on Mt Olympus... thats the other ones :P
I can’t wait for Friday to come and put my hands on mine.

Correct. It will only ask that question if it doesn't have a lens attached or is an old vintage lens adapted or something
I should have started off with saying "THANK YOU" to both of you for taking the time to make this video for everyone.

Woohoo! Been waiting for this one
Extremely valuable information! Thanks Jared!
Do you have a similar set-up video for the R6ii? If so where do I find that?
Here you go: th-cam.com/video/4EUZd8HfgWw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=h9moI0S8ZYRhjFsF
Thanks so much for posting this! I was hoping that you would have configured this camera using back button focus , and using C1-C2-C3 possibly with C1 and C2 for stills and C3 for video.
You have 3 custom functions for stills and 3 for video. If you press the record button in still mode it will start a video using custom function 3.
@ ?
Thanks Jared! This was awesome! Sligo!
Thanks a lot for doing this for us Jared!

Is it possible to map image review or play button to the rate button? 😮😮😮
Mine shows up tomorrow. Will have to watch this a second time.

Made me nervous thinking you were going to knock off the lense on the stool!😄
Please make a review of new canon rf 70-200 2.8 is usm z
I'm testing it out now
Release shutter without lens is useful for manual lenses that do not communicate with the camera.
Anyone have any idea when LR will add the R5m2 profile? Got my camera in Aug and still seeing a lot of noise when editing CRAW/RAW images. Last LR update was a few weeks ago.
Wow thanks for doing this. I think I’m screwing some things up. I upgraded from a DSL
Shutter close on shutdown should be independent of any other setting, hopefully they fix that on a firmware update

The comment on batteries cannot be understated. 3rd party batteries have always failed me. Only took ONCE to learn that lesson.
Amen
Very useful
Great job

I know you recommend many times a company who help you to make a website, her problems is to look the same in any device, please let me know the name,
thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about the R1?
Its not released yet
He has one he posted on his social media and he’s been using it out in the wild people can see it
those pre-prod units have been out a while. the "final" R1 has not yet shipped - though its not far off
@ he has a production model. He even said it in his podcast
Great video as always. Curious about how you personally set your back button and your * button for alternative focus modes.
