Hi Adrian My dad passed away in Feb this year. He repaired watches all of his life. I went straight out and bought the black SM sapphire sandwich on the bracelet. I’ve owned both the black sapphire & hesalite. Without a shadow of a doubt, I prefer the warmth and the way the light plays with the domed hesalite. I also prefer the fully brushed bracelet, but would happily borrow the applied logo from the sapphire model. The manual wind 3861 movement, unobscured by a rotor is mesmerising and that leaves me in two minds as to whether my ideal version would borrow this feature too. The solid case back feels somehow authentic and honest, but it hides the beauty within. In the end, the one I kept and enjoy is the hesalite, so I guess that answers that, for me anyway.

I picked up the white speedy last month. Pictures and videos do not do the dial justice. It’s something that has to be seen in person, under the sunlight, to fully appreciate. The open case back adds a nice touch as well. Seeing all the movements in action is fun to watch. I’m a fan of the sapphire sandwich and polished inner links for a subtle, two-tone appearance. The tapered bracelet is another great update that makes the fitment even more comfortable on the wrist. 10/10
The white is eye-catching. So many watches have slightly off-white dials, and you don't notice until you compare them to the white Speedy. This white is absolutely crisp!
Black, hesalite. I’ll admit to always being a little confused when people complain about how many Speedmaster variants there are. There is only one Speedmaster. It’s got a black dial and a hesalite crystal. Everything else is a special edition in some way. And I say that as someone who loves the new white dial one. But I own a 1861 and there’s simply no substitute for the original.
I daily my 3861 Sapphire Sandwich. There was a moment where I was pretty jealous when the white dial came out. It does look amazing. That being said, long term, I don't think I would select it over the black dial. Black dial, and I don't regret the Sapphire over the Hesalite.
Dare I say they’re different enough to enjoy both!? Black with the warmth and character of the hesalite and solid caseback. And the fresh white dial with modern sapphire front and rear, showcasing the beautiful movement. I would easily like both in my collection!
I'm old school so when I got mine back in 2015, it was caliber 1861 with hesalite all the way. No regrets, I love the vintage look. Of course, the new white dial wasn't available then. That said, this new white dial Speedy is a beauty.
I agree that the black has a charm that the white doesn’t capture. I went into my boutique to look at the white dial, and ended up walking out with a black sapphire sandwich. Scratch resistant glass + seeing the movement, I think it’s the ultimate speedy
I picked up a pre-update hesalite for half what the current model goes for, literally a month before they discontinued it. I was also born in the same month and year they took it to the moon so a very special watch for me.
Black 3861 Hesalite, wear it every day. The scratches are easy to polish out but even easier to ignore. I've had this watch for around 18 months now and I still look at it in amazement. Tried the sapphire and Hesalite on in the boutique and there is a difference between how the two materials look; the Hesalite makes the dial feel a bit warmer and the edges of it distort in a really pleasing way. I've also always wanted an Omega watch with the hippocampus on the caseback so there was very little swinging me to the sapphire. The bracelet is amazing and feels a lot like a Rolex jubilee. Co-axial, METAS, magnetic resistance and so on are all brilliant to have on a watch. Plus, it's very very good at timing your cooking.
Black with Sapphire has been my daily for a year nearly. Absolutely in love with it. The white one does have my eye though, although if I go white, I kinda want the snoopy lol.
Black and with Hesalite - no doubt about it! Owned mine for about 10 years, and worn i daily on a black Omega leather (“alligator”) or a black Nato. Just love the clean design.
Sapphire as the movement is so nice and the dial is better with the Omega logo standing out. Black because the lume is better than the white, and the colour contrast is awesome.
Just to make it fun, I’ll go ahead and predict he goes with the hesalite. I know he loves a white dial so if he’s choosing between the two in this video, I think he leans that way. Plus, he has an old omega with hesalite so if one has already scratched that itch, it may be fun to go fully modern on the latest Speedy. Thankfully Omega gave us both options here.
Was never a big fan of the speedmaster but then it started growing on me… then I tried it on and wow - the most comfortable watch I’ve put on. 7 ¼” wrist size
Black dial sapphire for you as it scratches both itches the longing to see the workings of the watch combined with the clarity of the black dial. For me the Hesalite as I love the vintage vibe and authenticity with all that history! 🙂
bought the white on the bracelet but had the rubber strap fitted to it. Its beautiful and I think its sooo subjective re colour. Being a twat i have the black face daytona as a wedding gift 14 years ago. Decent combination
I’ve had my black SS for two years now and the honeymoon period has never waned. Absolutely perfect watch, I love looking at that movement and as you say, it’s a strap-monster, green & grey nato, nylon, tan rally, or even formal black crocodile leather in the style of George Clooney’s in The American. Epic watch.
My take is....go with white dial if you own a lot of black dive watches like many dive watch fans do. I tend to prefer mineral crystals because they look less austere to me with vintage vibe as mentioned and I am careful with my watches not only relative to dial but the watch case itself. Nice comparison video Adrian thanks. PS. even before I was ever into watches I remember the first time I saw a Speedmaster. My brother-in-law was into watches and he had one which reflected his good taste. I thought it was the perfect looking watch. Special watches are rare in natural for obvious reason. Once in a great while a designer gets it just right. A confluence of countless factors. Like an E-type Jag or '63 split window Corvette or Ferrari Testarossa or GTO. Omega nailed the aesthetic and proportionality of this watch and going to space just makes it that more special.
OK, Adrian. I think you will end up with the black Hesalite version, as you will very much enjoy the vintage aspect of that combination. I think my recommendation for you would be the black sapphire sandwich, so that you can see and enjoy the movement inside. Whichever version you get, we know you will enjoy it!
The Speedmaster is very unique because its story is mostly not BS and very significant. It’s the only watch I would even consider a Hesalite crystal and bypass a display back…but I did just that. For me …with particular watch…it was very important to have as close to the original incarnation as possible. You should get both…but the black Hesalite first 😉
I just picked one up today, and it’s stunning!!! I wear a lot of black clothing, and the white just POPS!!! I notice people always taking a glance at my wrist during conversation because it’s impossible not to notice it.
I got the white seamaster last year and now I'm after the white Speedy, as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get it. There's just something about a white dial. But for me, it's sapphire all day long.
I got the Black Dial [Hesalite] 7 weeks ago on the Black Strap. From a UK Boutique for a nudge under £5.8k cash. And your right it is so so comfortable it wears smaller than a 42mm. I'm used to 40mm Rolex's. Only quirk I have noticed is that the hour sub hand does not align [you can see it at 2:36 sec frame]. I take tablets for OCD and this mis-align doesn't seem to bother me. It actually makes it feel unique to my watch. When you get your AB you'll love it and it's a strap monster 😀🙌👌
Went white and love it - was going to buy black this year but only hesitation was I have 2x black dial already. When they brought the white out it was easy decision. Lacquer dial with touch of red stunning. If black would have gone crystal - the view of the movement is just mesmerising
This is also going to be my next watch. I own more Rolex watches but have a few omegas. I have got over how much the price gas gone up in recent years. I decided that I will not purchase a second hand speedy. I am undecided on the white or black. There is not even a white speedy on display at my AD. But I think i will end up buying the black sapphire model, that is my gut feeling. I always go back to why is this watch not 100metres water resistant ? After all it has a sapphire glass and an open back, so its already been changed from the original model. Anyway plan to get it for Christmas need a few more coppers. 💰
I have the black saphire sandwich and it definitely gets a lot of wrist time. I catch myself taking it off and just staring at that movement all of the time! To me, no question giving up the hesalite in exchange for unfettered access to that beautiful manual wind movement is a no brainer! White dial is cool, but black is the real Speedmaster. Best of luck, and thanks for another great video.
Just got a call from the AD for an Explorer II which I'd been waiting for a while. When I eventually put it in my wrist, it just didn't speak to me - ended up turning it down! I know it's not the same category of watch, but I think the white dial Speedmaster is much nicer to look and a much more watch for the money... and it's £1k less.
Proves all the naysayers wrong that Omega loses value. Any professional speedmaster will sell for above acquisition cost 5 yrs onwards. Depends on condition of course...
My speedy is a 3861, black dial, sapphire. Black dial is the icon, but I love the white dial as well. Its my fall back if I can't get the silver snoopy. That's the plan at least.
Team Black w/ Hesalite crystal. The original concept, the one that made the model legendary, the one NASA certified for EVAs. Also love how transparent the hesalite crystal makes the dial look. Like there’s nothing between you and the dial. Of course you get that milky effect once you view it from the sides and to some that may be a dealbreaker.
I love the way the speedmaster wears but never fell in love with the black dial, the white dial however is gorgeous and I'm considering it as my next watch
I bought a watch from MaMaCoo lightly used for my last milestone birthday. Don't wear it as much as it deserves, but not afraid to, either. It's stunning . Good taste, Sir.
I like the white dial, but the more I see them side by side, the more I go back to the classic black version. You get a Speedmaster (at least in part) because of its historic connection, and the black embodies that look better. The exception for me is the Tokyo Olympics panda dial, but that's another topic altogether.
I do not own a Speedmaster yet but definitely will. It’s the first luxury watch I tried on and said to myself, yeah, I get it now! I don’t agree with how expensive they are new but a lightly used one for $6k or so is such a good price for such a perfect watch. If you gripe about it being a manual movement, if you gripe about the bracelet feeling to “light”, if you gripe about the size, if you gripe about the adjustment in the clasp, the watch isn’t for you or you haven’t experienced one in person. I tried to sub it out with a moonswatch but it just makes me want the real thing even more and that white dial…ahhhggg😩
I’ve always like the Speedy for what it is, but have never been tempted to buy one because I didn’t love the look of the bracelet. Now, I’m so tempted by these. I helped a friend get one for her husband as a wrong gift and it’s so nice. I think owning one of these would definitely provide some competition for wrist time within my collection.
Manually-wound, co-axial escapements: Omega De Ville Tresor; Speedmaster; and watches built by George Daniels and Roger W. Smith. The white dial is cool, and the black dial is iconic. Both are great and you can't go wrong with the movement. I'm not one for waiting, so the black dial for me.
Own a Speedmaster Sapphire Black, but they all 3 have something for them. The hesalite version bracket does not have the the polished centre links in the middle which gives it a more stealthy look which I initially preferred. But that case backs on the sapphire versions are so beautiful.
The white dial is really fresh but the black dial is just so classic, sapphire is great for every day life but you find yourself looking down at your wrist occasionally wishing you had went for the hesalite, but then every morning or evening when winding the watch, you catch a glance at the caseback and movement - you are reminded at just how amazing this tiny device on your wrist is, especially in todays world where most things we buy have a designed lifespan. As a side note: I mind seeing a Hodinkee post saying an exhibition caseback is a secret between you and your wrist, which I thought was poetic! For me, I would and did go for sapphire. Good Luck
This week I got a pretty significant promotion at work, jumping from an entry level position to department head after only about 3 years with the business. It is a small business and I won't exactly be buying a Porsche any time soon, but I WILL be buying an Omega Speedmaster Saphire Sandwich with Black Dial and Black Leather strap the moment I've saved up enough!
The hesalite is based off the original moonwatch. It's also so much nicer to look at than the sapphire. Plus, it won't shatter. It's the perfect everyday watch that you can also wear on the velcro.
Black with hesalite. Wore mine to The Boodles tennis yesterday on a green and white nato (to match the tennis courts) and felt like I’d at least made an effort, and hadn’t just put a watch on for a wealth statement as I knew they’d be plenty of Pateks and APs floating around!
You picked the best two speedmaster professionals to compare. I have a black hesalite version made in the early 2000’s. I see the white version as the modern take on the speedy. The black one is more faithful to the original. I like the idea of having hesalite on the black version. If you want to beat up the watch the hesalite is perfect. The crystal can easily be changed out if it gets too shabby. If you baby your watches and like them to look pristine then I think the white dial version is as good as a modern speedmaster gets
I definitely love the white dial, but the black dial is crazy versatile. While I went for the hesalite and do not regret it, I would go for the sandwich version, I would love to be able to look at that mouvement and even though I am not bothered by the scratches it is nice to not have to worry about them. There is no bad choices there though so go for it mate.
Hey Adrian, great Video! For your Question: Haven‘t seen the white version in real for now, so i can‘t comment on this one, but as an owner of the black version: Hesalite!!!!!!!!!! Not because it‘s more „original“. But if you compare both black options you will see that the sapphire crystal adds a bit of a white milky ring (reflections inside the material due to a different Breaking of the light) at the edge of the crystal while the hesalite has a more blacky look.
When I workout or go for a long run/hike in the woods I bring my sapphire shielded black bay 54 every time. But when it comes to the speedmaster, I cannot imagine having bought anything other than the black dial hesalite 3861. I live a very active lifestyle and the dome holds up fine. I wear it constantly and if it gets a ding you can just polywatch it back to perfection, which is itself an awesome experience. Hesalite is the way for a speedy!
Both versions have the matte black aluminum tachymeter ring. One salesperson told me that this makes the black a more coherent design because the dial is also matte black. The white one has a glossy dial with glossy hands and markers, which looks a lot more dressy in person. The salesperson reckons that it'd be a better match with a ceramic tachymeter ring, one that similar to the Snoopy Speedy but in black, since the ceramic ring is also glossy.
I have an new Ed White 321 on right now, and also a Silver Snoopy in my box, so I have experience with Speedmasters. That being said, I tried on the new white version and was blown away. Really a great daily wear watch. Very modern and attention-grabbing. I will pick up a white version soon. My Silver Snoopy is great to have but I can't read the hands when they get over the subdials. The new white fixes that issue.
Got my black dial about a year ago and wear it just about every day. My only nice watch. Went with sapphire cause I love seeing the movement and prefer the durability for daily wear. Also like the applied logo and polished bracelet links for more variation. Amazing watch! White dial seems like a novelty that would get old and you’ll be wanting that classic black dial.
I’m team black dial sapphire and am wearing my currently. I did upgrade to the new clasp which makes a world of difference. I’m not a fan of hesalite because it scratches easily. I also feel the small changes on the sapphire watches do make the watch much more premium. I do like the applied indices on the white dial and wish my black dial had the same.
I wear team black, sapphire. I do agree that it's the subtlies of the dial that make this watch amazing. When I first experienced the watch in person, I was intrigued but not amazed....then my impression of the watch only grew more and more with each passing minute at just how amazing this watch is , ..... It was evident when I walked out of the boutique with it on my wrist. The rest is history....
As a space fan (a child of the Apollo era). It had to be black hesalite, though I was tempted to get one with movement view. There’s a lot of interest of course in the white dial, it’ll be interesting to see if that settles. Great we have the choice though. I’m lucky that I have the CK2998 Pulsemeter, white face panda dial, which scratches that itch. So, although, the white dial would tick that box, next purchase will be the 36mm Explorer. You’ll enjoy whatever you settle on and can’t go wrong with whatever you choose.
I now have both white and black dial Speedmaster in Sapphire, I prefer the Sapphire for the exact reason you mentioned the clarity. The other reason is the polished and brushed bracelet it just adds to the overall look. I have just ordered the Daytona leather strap for the White dial I think it emphasises the dial IMO. Team both on these. Thanks from Australia 🇦🇺
I can’t afford a Speedmaster. But I have a Bulova Lunar Pilot which has a black dial and a sapphire crystal. I enjoy the clarity of the sapphire crystal where you can see the stepped dial and recesses for the sundials. Not to mention the scratch resistance that sapphire crystal offers. However, as a space fan. I think I would go with Team Black and Hesalite.
I know Omega can make a lot of the same model, but they seem to maintain quality and very impressive specs. While I wouldn’t use the features of this Speedmaster, the white one is a winner with the sapphire crystal front and back and that bracelet.
Black/Sapphire for the see-through case back! It's just such a treat to look at the movement inside and I after having enjoyed it so much, I would feel bad not having it. I already have the Polar Exp 2 so I would go for a Black Speedie if I have to choose again.
I bought the 3861 sapphire 6 months ago and sold it last week for a couple of reasons. 1. The OEM leather strap never worked on my wrist. Either too tight or too loose. And the taper at the buckle was unbalanced. 2. I liked sapphire initially for its clarity but when owning it, it lacks character 3. I barely looked at the open caseback. I will get a hesalite the next time.
Nice 50:50 shot. I’d go black with sapphire. You’ve got the white sea master which looks better in white than the speedmaster. Sapphire gives you the rear view and it’s better that it doesn’t scratch in the first place than easy to fix the scratches From someone who has the hesalite 1861.
I’ll be getting the black sapphire as my next piece. Sapphire over hesalite because it’s slightly more dressy with the polished pieces so can work with more formal attire plus the case back, and robustness of sapphire at the front. Whether black or white that’s a personal decision. I have dark skin so don’t wear white dials , so black it is. The white is awesome though so for you either way, but I’d probably opt for the classic black being the iconic look. Good luck and looking forward to seeing what you chose
Hi there, Not an easy choice. I didn't have a problem when I got mine from a work colleague in the '70s. I've been told it's a 1969 model with a rare straight writing case back. It was just a watch then. Omega hadn't started calling it a moonwatch yet !!
Tough choices, but I think Adrian will opt for the Black Sapphire variant. His fav watch is the Explorer II in white, so doubt he will double up there. Who knows, he might throw us a curveball and splurge a bit on the Sedna Gold on Steel.....I want to see that in person.
I bought the white Speedy Pro when it came out and I've been wearing it everyday since then. The white dial right pops and I get a tiny sense of internal joy when I see the red inside. I say, get the white! I'm debating on buying the Silver Snoopy now but I don't know if they're too similar to each other...

I have exactly this. It's the best 👌
Tough call, white looks great, black is classic. If you consider your collection tho, you already have a white dial SMP300 and Explorer II
@DPTX Excellent point regarding Adrian's collection.
I would go with the black/sapphire. The perfect modern classic.
Does yours have a lot of scratches?
@@mrbrightside3771 No, not really. I dont "baby" it, but try to avoid damages of course.
Sapphire as the movement is so nice and the dial is better with the Omega logo standing out.
Black because the lume is better than the white, and the colour contrast is awesome.
The white dial with their black perforated leather strap (with white stitching) is a great combination.
Adrien feeds on nostalgia. He's gonna get the black hesalite.
I think he'll go for Black Sapphire
@@ForeverBrooklynNYC That would be a shame haha imo
Deep down everyone gets on the hype train and cares about resale, no way he will take the black, it’s a bad deal
@@Commodore0069 literally no one gives a shit about that. They all lose money as soon as you walk out of the store
Team black/hesalite for 8 years now, my first "better" watch. But I have this feeling that white/sapphire should be a nice combo. :)
Was never a big fan of the speedmaster but then it started growing on me… then I tried it on and wow - the most comfortable watch I’ve put on. 7 ¼” wrist size
Yup! Especially the 3861 stepped dial! It's just wow...+ It's not loud.
Love it!😊
Black dial sapphire for you as it scratches both itches the longing to see the workings of the watch combined with the clarity of the black dial.
White dial is SICK. It's beautiful. The black dial is classic. Can't go wrong!
You should get both…but the black Hesalite first 😉
What an amazing outcome for a beautiful watch. Always a pleasure to see amzwatch work your magic. Thanks for sharing this transformation with us!
The white is stunning.
I just picked one up today, and it’s stunning!!! I wear a lot of black clothing, and the white just POPS!!! I notice people always taking a glance at my wrist during conversation because it’s impossible not to notice it.
Not only will sapphire shatter and possibly break the movement, but you'll also have shards of glass floating around in a space shuttle.
I got the white seamaster last year and now I'm after the white Speedy, as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get it. There's just something about a white dial. But for me, it's sapphire all day long.
I thought this was a totally nonesense video - I have a Hesalite Moonwatch Pro; but that white dial looks SO good.
By far the best video comparing the black and white versions.
Team black sapphire. Most versatile of the three.
My #1 watch 3861 Hesalite all the way. I’ve had a broad arrow sapphire sandwich as well
Never got the buzz about the Speedy and never liked it.... but I had the new white on the wrist and it just pops with its contrast, it's just amazing!
Team white. That lacquer dial is amazing.
I got the black hesalite one, which I really love, seven years ago new for much less than 4k€ 🤣
Also, bear in mind the black speedy looks good since 60 years .. the white might become just a fashion for some short time
Proves all the naysayers wrong that Omega loses value.
Black dial with Sapphire, classic, timeless! Nothing more to be said.
The white dial is crispy, the red text just elevates it
The red details really do look great. Perfect amount of red.
White Speedy is a strap monster. Excellent strap and color choices.
Just got black sapphire last week.
But both great. I'd decide based on dial colors currently in collection.
1960s one for me, with tritium, patina and scratches. They bring childhood memories to life.
Love the white dial. Prefer the look. I don’t mind the little extra thickness for the toughness of the sapphire.
Just bought mine this past Friday, easy decision for me Team Black dial with sapphire.
I bought a watch from MaMaCoo lightly used for my last milestone birthday. Don't wear it as much as it deserves, but not afraid to, either. It's stunning . Good taste, Sir.
He’s back baby 🔥
I like the white dial, but the more I see them side by side, the more I go back to the classic black version. You get a Speedmaster (at least in part) because of its historic connection, and the black embodies that look better. The exception for me is the Tokyo Olympics panda dial, but that's another topic altogether.
Hesalite. That’s how it was intended to be.
I have a Grey side of the Moon Speedmaster and I love it to bits. Awesome watches.
I tried a black dial speedy on, it was life changing
So early Adrian's Explorer 2 hasn't broken yet
I have the black sapphire sandwich. Love it, loved it so much I bought the full moonshine gold with green dial to go along with it.
@VectorSearch That moonshine gold one is such a distinctive color combination!
I’m for sure on team exhibition case back. Probably on team black dial though.
I have never been disappointed since I became a customer of amzwatch. Their watches are of exceptional quality.
2. I liked sapphire initially for its clarity but when owning it, it lacks character
