I bought this exact watch earlier this year to commemorate the scariest time in my life; sending triplets to college. I never knew how I was going to take care of them all at the same time, but somehow, it worked out and with no debt for myself or them. After writing my last check for tuition, I went out and rewarded myself with the Sapphire Sandwich. My budget was about one semester of tuition, room & board for one kid. I kind of shorted myself as I didn't see anything else I really wanted for closer to $10k, but whatever. I love the watch and every time I look at it, it reminds that with a bit of hard work, you can accomplish more than you think is possible. On another note, while Teddy did touch on how well the watch wears for many different wrist sizes, he should've also mentioned how this thing is a strap monster. It looks so good on the bracelet, but also on leather, NATO and sailcloth straps. Well done video, Teddy. Thanks for sharing.
Out of all the watches I own, this one is, by far, my favorite, although I’ve barely have worn it. However, I constantly look at it. Such an amazing piece! Can’t stop looking at the exhibition case back.
I’ve been a very avid distance runner and marathoner for 24+ years now, as well as a watch enthusiast. It was always my plan to buy this watch when I finally qualified for the Boston Marathon. For obvious reasons with the name and my love of watches and Omega, but also because of my love of the space program since I was a little kid in the 80’s, and because qualifying for Boston was always sort of shooting for the moon for me, not being a natural athlete. This past month in Chicago, after 24 years and 65 marathons trying, I finally qualified for Boston, and they same day went to the Omega boutique on Michigan Avenue, all dressed up, to buy this watch. It actually came at a horrible time, as I’m currently unemployed, but I wasn’t going to miss the moment. It will take some sacrifices paying for it over the next 18 months’ financing, but I’ll never forget the satisfaction, or the experience. Hopefully years from now when I’m in better circumstances, I’ll look back and be glad that I did push it through. I’ll likely have the watch the rest of my life, and cherish it.
Could not even read all of that, but what's the entry criteria for the Boston marathon? I have run local 10k's that do not want slow folk involved, but the London marathon has zero standards and I assumed Boston was the same? London marathon has automatic entry after 6 consecutive failed ones I thought, but I could be wrong. In the UK we have 48 months interest free credit on a Moonwatch. Waiting all those years after all those price increases to pay for it over 18 months seems madness! Would you have paid list if you had had the money? Did the 18 month finance add to the cost over list?
I'm glad you pushed off buying a watch until you met a goal, but man, financing a watch, especially one that drops 30% of its value as soon as you leave the boutique, is not a wise decision.
I have owned The Hesalite Version with 1861 Movement for last 8 years. One of My Favorite Watch’s I have. Hope one day I can Get myself the New Version with the White dial. ! Thank you Teddy for another Informative Video.
Love that you guys love those two watches but I cannot help feel TH-cam fanboys made you buy them. I used to work in a watch shop and could have got 40% off, yet neither were anywhere near tempting to me. I did get a quartz Speedmaster Professional though (the ESA one that's actually in space right now) which I love.
Seriously just purchase this watch from you guys and received it yesterday all within 24 hours! Great service to say the least. Thanks for my first luxury ( what I consider) time piece. Now to get it sized.
I bought the Sapphire sandwhich this summer and I love it! I personally chose the Sapphire, as I knew I would wear the watch everyday. If I had bought the watch with the knowledge I would only wear it a few times a year, I would have gone Hesalite for the historic accuracy.
I was blessed to have been able to get the hesalite 3861 back in 2022. If anyone is concerned about the scratches on hesalite, the lack of micro adjust, or being able to see the movement, don’t be. The scratches on hesalite are barely noticeable when wearing it throughout the day or when reading the time (you have to catch them in exactly the right light), and are easily buffed out with a little Polywatch. Also, the 2-position micro adjust is perfect for me and my wrist swells and contracts a lot. The point is that if you needed more than 3 points of micro adjust, you’d take out or add another link. The micro adjusts are 1/3rd the size of a link, so it works perfectly. Lastly, I swapped my caseback out for a sapphire version so I have the best of both worlds now! I’ll swap the caseback back and forth every now and again for the inscription too. It’s your watch, you can do whatever you want with it!
Bought the Hesalite version two months ago, been on my wrist every single day since. It was a tough choice but since I want the white dial variant as well, that one can be my Sapphire! Great video as always Teddy!
A recent visit to Mykonos and finding the white dial there was simply something I couldn't resist... What finish, what beautifully crafted sub-dials and that red font "Speedmaster" reminder each time I look at it... Love all of it! Yeah, purists, white one stacks up just as well as the black dial classic! Yeah it was an investment and an acquisition of sorts... A grail watch, as they say... Happy camper each time I wear it with a ton of compliments on this instant classic, even on my smaller wrist... My son's already eyeing it... I guess it'll make for one helluva hand-me-down... Happy camper! 😉
Yes, I have bought from MAMACOO more than once. I even bought a new Omega Speedmaster which came with the fancy box and packaging. I am thrilled with all my purchases here. I would purchase from MAMACOO again for sure.
Was cool 60 years ago, is cool today, and will be cool 60 years from now. I saved up for the Ed White 321 version in part because I knew it was a forever cool watch, even for my teen after I'm gone.
I purchased my Speedmaster in 2022 and love it I prefer and purchased the Hesalite edition as I wanted it to be more like the original that was worn and traveled to the Moon.I purchased the Hesalite watch with the black nylon strap instead of the bracelet and also purchased the Omega Speedmaster Professional black Velcro strap with the NASA logo and with the words in white stating Speedmaster Moonwatch which has drawn more attention to it, leading to many conversations about its history.
You missed out because I think this may be the best bracelet Omega has ever released. I keep my seamaster on a rubber strap because I hate the bracelet but the speedmaster stays on the bracelet.
Love my 3861 sapphire. I’ve got a 17cm wrist, and the watch sits perfectly. Definitely does not wear like a 42mm, more like 40mm. And the monochrome scheme (black/white) is perfect for all kinds of straps. Right now on an Artem sailcloth, but alle sorts of materials work well with this watch too 😊 I wanted the sapphire, not that I bash my watches around, but it makes me feel a bit more secure, and love the display caseback.
I was looking for my first chronograph in my watch collection earlier this year and after comparing different brands and models I bought the Omega Speedmaster Professional calibre 3861 sapphire. I bought this watch mainly because of its historical background - space exploration represents the pinnacle of human engineering. The dial may not suit my aesthetic taste because I am a dress watch person but the finishing of the movement is, though the finishing is done by machine. The Speedmaster Moonwatch is definitely one of the Top 10 most iconic watches and maybe even Top 5. I wear it every Tuesday for #speedytuesday😄
I bought the Sapphire version kind of on a whim at Changi airport and I'm happy that I did. The first watch my late dad ever gave me was an Omega Constellation and it was stolen and ever since then, I wanted to get another Omega. Happened to be browsing the stores in Changi and I started looking at the Omegas and I asked about the Consteallations that they had, but eventually decided on the Speedmaster, sorry dad, but it's still an Omega!! I did buy it with the leather strap, as I'm not always a fan of a metal band, and I do find it more subtle, which is good sometimes.
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
@Rodolfoguerra12 I've always thought that. Take the crown away and it's less than basic. The omega is just better to me. There are only a few rolex watches that speak to me. And they are the ones that not many people like (air king, root beer, explorer 2)
Changed my beloved Hesalith with 1863 movement, fair enough with one year break in between, to Saphire Sandwich…3861 movement…both georgous watches just love both….new steel bracelet is a big jump forward…but also other strap options work beautifully on this strap queen
Love Omega’s moon story, go for hesalite. If you don’t care too much about moon story or don’t have a watch with a nice movement already, I recommend getting a sapphire case back so you dont miss out on the beautiful 3861 manual movt. The subtle polish on bracelet on sapphire model is not flashy but adds some visual presence, best of both worlds. Hard choice for watch enthusiast, but it is actually easier for first time buyer to get the most out of it over long term
You can still care about the moon story and get the sapphire. Imagine saying, if you care about the moon story, then get the Velcro strap and not the bracelet. Or if you care...then get the actual watch worn by an astronaut in 1969 instead of the 3861.
I bought this watch to mark my 50th birthday. I think the strap is incredible, it wears like a 40mm watch, very similar in size to my 40mm 14060m submariner. The speedy looks smart, and is an absolute strap monster. I bought mine from the AD with a healthy discount, but also a lovely experience with freebies thrown in. These can be picked up on secondary market even cheaper than my discounted price, but given I never plan to sell, I’m not so worried and would rather have full documentation and warranty. It’s a great watch, although I admit the white version looks smart too. That is probably the worst thing….96 variants of speedmaster can be overwhelming.
I went with the hesalite as I think it does look better. It's delicate so I don't daily it like I would a sapphire one, so I keep mine for occasions. Either one is fantastic and timeless.
I got mine this year, and for me, it was an easy choice for me to go with the hesalite version. I have been a HUGE space fan since I was a kid, and this was an absolute no-brainer for my first real luxury watch. The history this watch has seen is mind-boggling; I have this huge sense of pride from wearing the version closest to ones the astronauts used. The hesalite version to me looks slightly better than the sapphire (there is minimal milky ring on the hesalite and I love the vintage look to the crystal at various angles), and I love that it says "flight qualified by NASA" on the back. And all the fuss about the lack of scratch resistance is overblown - I have gotten 1 minuscule scratch so far that was easily and quickly remedied with polywatch. It looks fantastic with literally anything I'm wearing and the accuracy is just incredible (mine was tested at just +1 second a day). A long-awaited purchase that I cherish everyday and hope to pass on to my son one day!
I'm interested to see if they start integrating the new FOIS crystal into the sapphire sandwich models moving forward. While the FOIS isn't my cup of tea, that crystal is stunning.
It’s stunning but it’s very reflective. I own a Seamaster 300 heritage with that type of crystal and it’s super reflective. I also have the sapphire sandwich and it really does a better job with reflections, however it has a little milky ring. Cheers.
The height difference is definitely noticeable. These wear very differently. Sapphire version sits more flush. Separately the sapphire glass is flatter and gives the watch a more modern look.
The only reason anyone should buy a non-limited or low volume Omega for retail price at a boutique is if they want to build a collection and buy limited or low volume models down the line (Ed White, Snoopy, and others in the future), as those resell for higher than retail, so the gap on your purchase history will slightly offset the premium you'd pay for resale. But indeed if you just want a Moonwatch or any regular production Omega model, don't buy from a boutique. Buy from an AD who can offer you a serious discount (at least 15%), or buy from any trusted dealer online and you'll save 25%.
I tried this on my 6.25 in wrist and was surprised that (to my eye) it fitted well. The links in the bracelet are also really small, so the one degree of micro-adjust shouldn't be an issue in getting a good fit.
We all need a Speedy..and a Sub/gmt haha.. great video, love all the information. I think the black Sandwich is the best, but if they made it automatic would even be better!
Two features that I find personally endearing about the Speedmaster are first, that like all chronometers it's annoying to use if your left-handed, and second it has a tachymeter scale that seems totally useless for space travel. Teddy's comment that the tachymeter played a "crucial role" in timing an engine burn caught me by surprise because you don't use the tachymeter to tell time. As a tachymeter scale displays 3600 divided by the stopwatch time in seconds, at 14 seconds the hand points at 257 on the tachymeter - right at the dot marking 250. Probably less error prone for the astronaut but maybe not "crucial".
Comparing the professional and the new First Omega in Space has demonstrated to me that the perfect Speedy is the 321. It has the best case, classic dial and handset, and the open caseback. FOIS is so close, but the Pro and FOIS need to have a baby.
There's no wrong answer in which Speedy to get, though I do hope at some point in the near future they come out with a domed sapphire crystal to mimic the hesi. Other brands/watches do this and the effect is similar without most of the drawbacks of hesilite. That said, I have a '22 hesi and wear it all the time. It scuffs relatively easily, and buffs perfectly smooth and clear just as easily.
I got the Hesalite because I imagined if NASA wanted to go to the Moon tomorrow, they will commission the Hesalite version as it is shatter-resistant. That makes it the true modern "Moonwatch".
The three reasons I chose the hesalite vs the sapphire. Having tried them both on there is a really obvious visual difference between how the face of the watch looks; the hesalite is warmer and at angles the distortion at the edge of the hesalite is way more appealing to me. I'm really into the solid caseback, and have always wanted an Omega with the hippocampus on the case, no idea why, but its something I like more than being able to see the movement. Finally I prefer the brushed metal center links on the bracelet. I wish my hesalite model had the applied logo but frankly the logo spends most of the time obscured by the chrono hand. Also, if you have a hesalite version and do want to see the movement, Spiralwinder will sell you a sapphire caseback that is very easy to fit yourself. I'd be interested to see if, in the future, Omega update the Speedmaster Professional with the new sapphire crystal from the latest FOIS Speedmaster which is much closer in shape to the hesalite. One last thing - I wear my Speedmaster Professional for while I swim 3 times a week - 50m of water resistance is plenty.
@@albundy3929 If you can get hold of a genuine Omega sapphire caseback from somewhere, then fitting it is super easy - just unscrew the solid one and screw on the the genuine one. Otherwise, Spiralwinder is a website you can look up, and they sell a sapphire casebacks that look identical to the genuine ones found on the sapphire sandwich 3861.
The Chrronogaphs’ Crhonograph and IMHO one of the 5 most iconic and historically significant, mechanical watches ever made; up there with the Submariner, Royal Oak, Santos and Calatrava. ----------------- Note: CASIO F-91 is up there in terms of iconic and historically significant status wrist watches but it’s not mechanical hence why I did not mentioned it.
I know it’s on the new “First Omega in Space” but what about that new sapphire dome crystal? Do you think they’ll include it on a redesign of the classic moonwatch?
Coolest watch thing a guy ever said to me was that he was going to buy a Moonwatch and then go on that 747 weightlessness experience thing. My kind of sad 😎😈
While vacationing in Europe last year I made a point to visit a watch boutique in Switzerland. Among several luxury brands, this is the watch I wore out of the store. This watch is not only special in it's own right, but even more so with the memories I have in Switzerland and abroad every time I put it on. Teddy, I appreciate your wealth of knowledge, expertise and honest, unbiased information and reviews. I look forward to when I have the opportunity to visit your store in person.
@@Rodolfoguerra12 I really like the original black dial Speedy, but at the same token I don’t have a white dial watch in my collection and that’s one of the reasons that’s making me consider getting the white version.
METAS does NOT outdo the COSC. 0/+5 seconds means the watch will never stay close to zero, only advances. The second must run slow too to cancel out the days it runs fast.
I wouldn't call any watch with just 50m WR universal. This is universal watch just for it's aesthetics which I like. But to those who seek for only one do it all watch Speedy shouldn't be recommended.
One of today's most cherished watches, I believe this is the one currently worn by President Joseph Biden. Something of a departure from the traditional Rolex Day Date "Presidential"

Wearing my Omega silver snoopy today, Teddy the man!
Congrats on your buy! It’s a family heirloom in the making. So glad you are wearing it, and building memories along the way.
Cheers.
It's coming for sure!
@@Rodolfoguerra12 great perspective
3861 hesalite or sapphire are great classics already!🎉
The height difference is definitely noticeable. These wear very differently. Sapphire version sits more flush. Separately the sapphire glass is flatter and gives the watch a more modern look.
Thanks for this great review!
best "value" in watches and maybe the best looking. plus it's the definition of a timeless design.
Own both the Black Sapphire 3861 and the White. Both perfect.👏🇦🇺
Nice pair, Silver Snoopy & Tudor Panda are my top two.
The SMP 300 bracelet has 6 points of adjustment, spanning a total of 9mm.
It would be nice if Omega would add a bit of tapper.
I love this watch but you would have to be crazy to pay full retail price right? New on ebay for significant discount.
My one and only daily driver for life.
We all need a Speedy..and a Sub/gmt haha.. great video, love all the information. I think the black Sandwich is the best, but if they made it automatic would even be better!
automatic would make it thicker. maybe one day omega will create an auto movement that can make it thinner.
Im really curious what would omega change for the next moonwatch
Watching this knowing my FOIS is coming in tomorrow is 💋
I wonder if Omega will "upgrade" the saphire as seen on the 2024 FOIS. Omega upgrade the on the fly bracelet adjustment so I'm guessing, yes.
Comparing the professional and the new First Omega in Space has demonstrated to me that the perfect Speedy is the 321. It has the best case, classic dial and handset, and the open caseback. FOIS is so close, but the Pro and FOIS need to have a baby.
321 Ed White is incredble
Finally getting my FOIS after two months when i ordered it
Teddy do a review of the FOIS
There's no wrong answer in which Speedy to get, though I do hope at some point in the near future they come out with a domed sapphire crystal to mimic the hesi. Other brands/watches do this and the effect is similar without most of the drawbacks of hesilite. That said, I have a '22 hesi and wear it all the time. It scuffs relatively easily, and buffs perfectly smooth and clear just as easily.
does the 2024 FOIS saphire mimic the hesalite?
that was incredible. what a beautiful watch and what great work you did on it!MAMACOO
i can't decide. will get both
I got the Hesalite because I imagined if NASA wanted to go to the Moon tomorrow, they will commission the Hesalite version as it is shatter-resistant. That makes it the true modern "Moonwatch".
I compared my cousins SpeedMaster to my SeaMaster & his Speedy looked a lot smaller even though they’re the same size.
Teddy, do you have plans to do a review of the new FOIS? Would love to see that as it's one of the most interesting models released this year.
Well said!!!!!!!!! I agree with you 1000% on everything you just said!
the saphire caseback cant be added to the hesalite version afterwards?
@@albundy3929 If you can get hold of a genuine Omega sapphire caseback from somewhere, then fitting it is super easy - just unscrew the solid one and screw on the the genuine one. Otherwise, Spiralwinder is a website you can look up, and they sell a sapphire casebacks that look identical to the genuine ones found on the sapphire sandwich 3861.
The speedy is my grail watch. I'd like the sapphire crystal with the closed case back.
I love my speedy sandwich….i just wish it had a bit more in the way of water resistance
I’m planning to purchase the Moon watch, but unsure whether black or white dial.
Is it just me or is the white dial Speedmaster nicer than the black? I think I like that one more.
The milky ring is only reason why I don’t go with sapphire
I have the white version. Beautiful watch.
Love my Speedy!
Waiting for the updated Speedy FOiS review
Teddy are you able to source a 321?
Teddy, you forgot to mention what a total strap monster the Speedy is! 😂😊
Bought my sapphire sandwich last year. Absolutely love it. Better option vs the hesalite in my opinion for daily wear. Classic piece.
As iconic as this is, I have NEVER seen one in the wild. Whereas I see Seamasters all over the place. This has always seemed odd to me.
Links in the description are not working
it's an incredibly beautiful, iconic, classic watch....it's just too damn small.
A personal choice, but I don't like manual wind watches for a daily wear watch. Is there an automatic movement version of this watch?
Yes, there is the reduced at 38mm and also a larger ceramic version at 43mm.
The Chrronogaphs’ Crhonograph and IMHO one of the 5 most iconic and historically significant, mechanical watches ever made; up there with the Submariner, Royal Oak, Santos and Calatrava.
-----------------
Note: CASIO F-91 is up there in terms of iconic and historically significant status wrist watches but it’s not mechanical hence why I did not mentioned it.
The 911 of watches 😊
Own a White dial version, absolutely love it. Gorgeous looking, fits so well, well balanced. It is going to stay forever in the collection.
I know it’s on the new “First Omega in Space” but what about that new sapphire dome crystal? Do you think they’ll include it on a redesign of the classic moonwatch?
Hopefully not, it reflects a lot.
I want to see the first Omega is space from you ✌️
Coolest watch thing a guy ever said to me was that he was going to buy a Moonwatch and then go on that 747 weightlessness experience thing.
My kind of sad 😎😈
Just got mine yesterday for my degree🎉 it's absolutely stunning and I love it so much
While vacationing in Europe last year I made a point to visit a watch boutique in Switzerland.
So many going crazy for the new FOIS. This Speedmaster Pro trumps it by a mile imho.
Agreed
Would we be able to order the 321 from you?
Links don’t work
Hesalite with with a sapphire case back.
How?
I’m torn between this and the new white dial version 🤔
White dial looks a bit larger on wrist. If you think black ver is small on your wrist, give the white one a try
If it’s your first speedy I’d go with the black, that is the icon.
@@Rodolfoguerra12 I really like the original black dial Speedy, but at the same token I don’t have a white dial watch in my collection and that’s one of the reasons that’s making me consider getting the white version.
@@iBJanky I suggest you go try them both on wrist. The right one will speak to you.
Has there ever been an automatic version of this model?
Not this exact model but the 38mm Speedmaster is automatic (324.30.38.50.01.001)
@@cloudness Super. Thank you!
I think Biden has an 1861 speedmaster
@@RedVegito he has several watches in his collection, but GQ has a photo of him as President wearing the Moonwatch.
I don’t think Biden has set the watch in the last 4 years.
I don’t think Joe Biden even knows what watch is on his wrist.
Biden has an 1861 or 1863 model going by its bracelet.
They have the FOIS and this thing could be marked as TDOSM. The Definition Of Strap Monster
Best place to buy high quality time pieces. Great service, great catalog. I'm a real person. I bought a Marathon. Definitely give them a look, especially around the holidays!
I would pay max 699USD period
a classic but i can't shake the feeling that £7500 is too much
I have three versions of the Speedy all bought with around 30% discounts. Don't pay retail for this watch.
Where??
@@billspina I bought the Big Box Speedy with hesalite on bracelet from a seller in Southampton UK, the first iteration of the FOIS from a seller in Monaco, and the latest iteration Sapphire Sandwich from a seller in Essex UK. I searched online for the best prices. Good luck,

I have to say that MAMACOO 's watches are amazing!
