I have to say one thing, limerick is the only Irish city that has that air of calm when you walk it ,there's no threat feeling like you get in other places, misty calm evenings by St.marys cathedral are wonderful, everyone seems happy , it's a wonderful place and I'm from Galway

Lived there a few years myself. JFK,on his visit there in 1963 said Limerick was famous for two things.....Fast horses and good lookin women. Dont know about the borses, but the women are good lookin ( and fast!)

I'd really like to go there and to some key places like Ardagh and Herbertstown for the 1867 fenian risings and the place where my family comes from. Love from Chicago. ☘
A lot of the families from there came tot he same place together. Clancy, McNamara, Hickey, Slattery, et al.

Let's not forget the McElligott family who lived in the Old Abbey Area and were known as the town wall fishermen along with the fizzies Fitzgeralds and the Keoughs etc. People seem to look over and ignore them. My great great grandfather Martin "Laniff" McElligott showed Jackie Clancy how to make a boat from scratch and Jackie mentions that moment in his book my life in the river. A great book if you can get it. Mine was gifted to me by Jackies daughter. I hope to visit Limerick again soon.

Away back in the 1970's I worked as an apprentice electrician on the construction of one of the Reynolds Brothers 'Ballrooms's. It was called the "Jetland " and was constructed near a football ground. I daresay that it is no longer a Ballroom, but I wonder if the structure still stands?

There is now a shopping centre where the Jetland once stood

After watching the movie about Frank McCourt's depressing childhood I kind of lost interest in visiting Limerick.

My Uncle went to school with Frank McCourt ,he was the richest kid in the class! He isn,t liked in Limerick the book he wrote is virtually 80% fiction.

@@michaeldogdbxbbbfwnes4148 ...I seem to recall his own mother gave a press interview in which she denounced his book as a pack of lies. In any case, he was very popular in the USA. His book tours were well-attended and given heavy media coverage. He was an interesting character and could really pour on the charm when he was selling his books. But then, Americans have always had a fondness for Irish literary celebrities.

Dont believe what u see in that movie....that deprivation is highly exaggerated. I lived there in the seventies...Limerick is a vibrant modern city
