A criminally-underrated band. They're so preposterously talented people never truly appreciated them. But fellow musicians, from head-bangers to classical aficionados, always did.

Yep, that Half-Time Shuffle (Hi-Hat & Snare) with the Afro-Cuban 3-2 Son Clave ("Bo Diddley beat" as Jeff calls it) on the bass drum is one of the most legendary drum grooves of all-time!!! I have Jeff's instructional DVD where he describes the groove and talks about other drummers (John Bonham's "Fool in the Rain" and Bernard Purdie on Steely Dan's "Home At Last"...I think) that inspired his development of groove!!!

I know you know about the band Three Dog Night....well something sad has happened.....Yesterday...the world lost a brilliant talent in the producer, engineer and musician Richie Podolor. Richie was an amazing musical guide for Three Dog Night from its very first record at MCA and he continued producing for us right on through to our new album, that is just about to be released. Despite his low-key demeanor, Richie was a powerhouse; beginning in the 1960’s he worked as a producer, engineer, musician, composer and arranger for countless artists including the Monkees, the Turtles, the Electric Prunes, the Grateful Dead, Donovan, the Dillards, Chris Hillman, and Black Oak Arkansas, as well as Steppenwolf for whom Richie engineered their huge hits “Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride”. Scores of artists, songwriters, producers and engineers have been impacted by Richie’s ideas and techniques. He was a great musician and a dear friend. Richie Podolor will be missed even as his talent still rests in the music and musicians that he touched......please react to the audio version "Woman" by Three Dog Night from their "It Ain't Easy" album.

The first vocalist is guitarist Steve Lukather (in the sunglasses). The second vocalist is Bobby Kimball. Lukather outro guitar solo shreds. If you want to listen to another one where Lukather does the lead vocal, I think one of their best is "I'll Be Over You", which in my opinion also features one of the best line lyrically ever written. Plus it features a BIG NAME singer making a guest appearance on backing vocals.

Jeff's shuffle is a combination of three drumming styles he incorporated into the Rosanna shuffle: The main shuffle beat is from Bernard Purdie. Jeff is a fan of the Bernard Purdie shuffle he used on Steely Dan's Home At Last. The second part of the shuffle is from John Bonham's Fool In The Rain, and the final part is the bass drum beat from Bo Diddley. Those three combined created the Rosanna shuffle Jeff plays.

Back then they were the who's who of studio musicians having played literally on hundreds of tracks. The drummer, late Jeff Porcaro told a story in an interview. The producer for the session wanted him to play in certain style, then demonstrating it using an album track. Jeff Porcaro had stated that it was himself playing. It has been said that the idea to form Toto was conceived during the sessions for Boz Scaggs' album "Silk Degrees" where Porcaro, David Paich and David Hungate played, Paich also doing the arrangements for the album.

Since Dee hasn't seen Westside story, she is thinking of the Outsiders which takes place in 1960s where the Greasers and Socs were rumbling. But the video is inspired by the 1961 movie West Side Story. With the Sharks and the Jets dancing their rumble scenes.
The character Ponyboy played by C. Thomas Howell was in the Outsiders. Patrick Swayze was the oldest brother Darry. Ralph Macchio was Johnny in the movie. When Chod reacted to Ralph Macchio and said he didn't realize Ralph had been acting since he was young (or something like that) I was shocked, because Chod mentioned Cobra Kai. Yes, I'm not letting it go. 😁
The actors at that time in the movie were popular. Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe are the ones that young folks like you might know from today. I was excited when that movie came out, because the book by S.E. Hinton was one of my favorites. And also, the movie had my Tiger Beat crush. 😍 The theme song "Stay Gold" is a great song by Stevie Wonder.

Written by David Paich. He is on keyboards. He wrote this about Rosanna Arquette. She was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro.
The next year, late Robert Arquette, youngest brother of Rosanna, played the boy in the music video She's a Beauty for The Tubes. Steve Lukather played lead guitar.
As for the lead vocals in Rosanna, Steve Lukather sings the verses. Bobby Kimble sings the pre-chorus.
Music video. Cynthia Rhodes is the actress and dancer. This was before she married Richard Marx.
Notes. Late Eddie Money was the main writer for Shakin. He also sang. Rosanna in that song has nothing to do with the song Rosanna. The actress in the Eddie Money song is Apollonia Kotero.
Same year Steve Lukather, late Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro played in the self-titled late Donna Sommer album and Thriller album for late Michael Jackson. Jeff played for Michael McDonald. Steve Lukather also played with Chicago. These members of Toto were working like a dog! 🐕L🤣L

You are both partially right. West SIDE Story is the main influence for the video. The Outsiders was based in the same time period that shared common elements. But the dance sequence is the part that separates the two. Michael Jackson's BEAT IT video shares DNA with the same theme of this video and West SIDE Story.
Dee, take the time and watch the original movie from 1961. I think you will see where your ideas collide.
Meanwhile, Chod and Dee, how about some soul on the channel. I'm talking about the O'Jays and the single, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. The studio cut will give you the best sound.
As for the music video, that is why MTV was so popular way back in the 2oth century. Enjoy

The version that you watched was a live concert in the 90s. Both Jeff Picard (Drummer) and Bobby Kimball (Lead Singer)-Had passed away. This video had all of the original band members.
One of my favorite songs of all time!

The drummer Jeff Porcaro had unfortunately passed away too young! Bobby Kimball is alive and well and has performed again with them in their many incarnations!

It probably was based on both. West Side Story was made in the early 60's actually it was about 2 gang rivals and a girl from one gang fell in love with the boy from the other gang and it was forbidden, and it was a musical. It was very popular

Chod, you talked about drumming along to this song yourself, as you did during Yoyoka''s RATM cover. You said there are tricky elements to both songs, so now that you've gotten to know Yoyoka's playing a little, check out her cover of Rosanna - she was just 10 years old...

Just saw Toto last week. Not all original but Steve Lukather knows how to put a band together and keep that music tight. This video was based off of West Side Story. Michael Jackson who was very good friends of Toto had asked if he could use that theme to make the Beat It video. Also several of members played a big part on the Thriller album. Such a great band.

Chod...Dee's right...the face off of the gangs is very reminiscent of Pony Boy face off in the outsiders...and yes...the dancing was similar to west side story...😉

Great reaction!! Both of you are half right. This is a take on West Side Story and The Outsiders. The "greasers" and " socies"( pronounced sòshes) were the rivals. West Side Story was about the conflict between two people of different races/ heritage falling in love and the friction caused by both sides.

There's a FUNKY song by Toto that nobody reacts to, but I think you could appreciate it as a drummer. From their Hydra album... maybe their funkiest song ever, with a super-cool offtime beat... the song "Mama".
You should check it out!!! Oh, and make SURE you play the original one rather than any of the live versions (they're not amazing like the first).
