Its pure perfection and beyond .... 2 male vocals (lead and backing) done to surreal perferction, totally out there background music production and reverb ..... its hard to say which is better, this one or Africa, this group has two of the greatest songs I've ever heard ..... Michael McDonald sang probably the greatest most beautiful male backing vocal I've ever heard ... his surreal backing together with the lead vocal makes the chorus gives me absolute goosebumps ....
There have been numerous TOTO lead vocalists Bobby Kimball sang on Hold The Line. David Paich (piano) sang on Africa. Bobby and Steve Lukather (guitar) sang on Rosanna.
Joseph Williams cannot be forgotten. He may not have been an original member but his contributions have been huge with songs like Pamela and Til The End. Fergie Frederikson and Jean Michel Byron, I was not a fan of and neither were the members of Toto to be honest.
Toto is underappreciated!! I love their songs "99", "Lea", and "I Won't Hold You Back" - please also consider Bread (If, Guitar Man, Make It With You), Dan Fogelberg (Longer, Same Old Lang Syne, Leader Of The Band), Donald Fagen (I.G.Y., New Frontier), and Alan Parsons Project (Time, Sirius/Eye In The Sky). Keep smiling!! ✨🤩✨
Oh my goodness! I watch this video every week because I’m obsessed with TOTO. I love that Michael McDonald sings back up on this. Such a beautiful song 💙💙
Toto's "I Won't Hold You Back" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to. The beginning is so haunting and the song brings tears to my eyes. I really hope the next song you guys play by them is this one. You will like it.
Yes, you've now heard four Toto songs…and four different lead vocalists. "Hold the Line" was lead singer Bobby Kimball. "Rosanna" is guitarist Steve Lukather, with Kimball coming in later in the song. "Africa" is keyboardist David Paitch (the band's chief songwriter) alternating verses with Kimball. And by 1986 and this song, Kimball had been busted on drug charges (he beat the rap) and fired for missing rehearsals. The new singer is Joseph Williams, son of the famous composer. (His dad's the guy who did the "Star Wars" theme.) Eventually, in 1998, Kimball returns, but that's a different band by then.
Some of their songs yet to discover are "99", "I Won't Hold You Back", "Georgy Porgy", "Make Believe", "Good For You" and "Pamela". Anything by Toto is Totally worth the listen.😄
So happy you're going down the Toto rabbit hole! "I Won't Hold You Back" is one of my faves, as is "Pamela". And though it's not one of the best known song, you will go NUTS for "Animal", if only because of the amazing bass and horns!
You guys are on a roll tonight - doing TWO of my favourite ballads. Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins have two of the most distinctive voices of the 80's. Just LOVE this song :)
Really Really would like to recommend Toto's "I will remember You" Steve Lukather wrote this not for a girl, but for Jeff Porcaro, the former drummer of Toto, who had died. Another, Non-Banger", Just beautiful.
The lead singer of this song, Steve Lukather, is actually more famous for being an amazing studio guitarist. From Michael Jackson's "Beat It" to Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" to Lionel Richie's "Running With The Night", he is "the man" if you want some serious guitar action. Steve's is also a Grammy-winning songwriter....he won a Grammy for co-writing "Give Me The Night", a huge hit for George Benson.
Now this is my ara and I was born in 1970. You could go back say a band and they not only hits but could draw tears from you with their music. We had poetry in so much! Thank you and keep up the good work.
From the standpoint of musicianship Toto was my favorite concert. Try listening to "Georgy Porgy" (with Cheryl Lynn on guest vocals), and from the post Bobby Kimball era try "Pamela".
Toto was the band of "studio" musicians who played on Cheryl Lynn's album. In fact they (each individually, and as a group) were the most sought after studio/session musicians in the late 70's through the 80's. They played on hundreds of commercial albums.
Toto recorded a song with Cheryl Lynn ("To Be Real"), called "Georgy Porgy," which hit for a while on the radio, in about 1978. It's real rhythmic and has a funky pop bossa nova beat to it!
The original lead (Bobby Kimball) was gone. Steve Lukather sang lead on this (and many others) but the new lead (Joseph Williams) sang backup and was on the tambourine on this one.
To this day, this song brought out the most therapeutic cry I've ever had. Just an ugly, blubbering cry that I think, saved me from harm. Knowing someone else experience what I did, got me through a tough time. I've always loved music for this reason.
I clicked so fast…I’m probably the biggest Toto fan. There isn’t a bad song. Afraid of Love is mine and my husband’s song from when we were dating from 40 years ago ☺️. (Oh and your comment on how they sound different, they have changed lead singers throughout their career so depending on when the recording came out it will have a different feel). My all time favorite Toto song is I Will Remember from their Tambu album.
I haven't heard this song in such a long time, and it brought back a time in my life that was so good but then it didn't work out like we hoped it would. But this song mad me cry because of the lost memories.
Love how Michael Mcdonald is just hanging out, adding in a little back-up help here and there. Toto trades off lead vocals between three guys. The talent runneth over.
As mentioned by others, the lead singer on this song is guitarist (yeah, all those solos) Steve "Luke" Lukather. He sang lead in many of their ballads (99, I Won't Hold You Back) while inserting some tremendously tasteful solos even in those ballads. The solo in I Won't Hold You Back is awesome. Toto always had multiple lead singers, including 3 on their first album alone, and their biggest hits all have different lead singers.
The guy with the puffy red hair is Joseph Williams, their primary lead singer during this time (and present day.) You need to hear him sing next… highly recommend “Pamela” or “Stop Loving You.”
This isn't just Toto the song also includes guest musician Michael McDonald the gentleman with the full mustache and beard that also had a hit What a fool believes with the Doobie Brothers and Own my own with Patti Labelle. He also had a solo hit in 1982 I keep forgettin (Every time your near).
Great slower Toto song and as others have said, that unmistakable sound of the guest appearance by Michael McDonald on the background vocal... so good.
Guy with the beard is Michael McDonald, he was a founding member of, the Doobie Brothers Band...he was highly sought after for his background vocals in this time period. He also has so solo stuff, as you say has that "Buttery voice"...he's not a member of Toto.
The reason you noticed a different sound in the voice is because it's a different singer from Africa and Hold the Line. Did you see and hear Micheal McDonald in the background?
"I'll Be Over You" peaked @ #11 in 1986. It was Toto's 12th single (of 14 total) to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Toto hit the Top 10 4 times including one #1 single ("Africa" / 1982). Recommendation: "Georgy Porgy" (featuring Cheryl Lynn on the chorus) from 1979. Sexy, slow groove beat for those "sleaze" (in SF we called it "morning music" /NYC called it "sleaze") dance floor sessions when outside the sun was rising in the early morning but the dancers still wanted to move-- albeit slowly. There is an extended 12-inch single very worth listening to.
This is one of my favorite songs of Toto! The song is a fantastic Break Up Song to listen to. Or even a memory of someone that you loved. Just the vocals alone in this song is just so emotional.
My favorite Toto song!!! God I loved this song in 1986/87. So many memories of being a teen back then. This song just takes you away to a much simpler time. The harmonies. The vocals. Michael Montgomery vocals. Just amazing
Yes, Toto! I like their songs. Almost every day I am reminded of this band because when I'm on my way to work a car with license plate T-O-T-O passes by. Cool! He/she must be a fan. 😊
Thanks for reacting to my request! 😃 Guest singer: Michael McDonald. Steve Lukather and late Jeff Porcaro played in I Keep Forgettin' 40 years ago 🎂 Written by Randy Goodrum and Steve Lukather. They were next door neighbors in Metro Los Angeles. Goodrum moved to Nashville. Steve Lukather is the lead singer here. He sang the chorus in Rosanna. He is the lead guitarist in all Toto songs. Previous hit songs written or co-written by Randy Goodrum. You Needed Me (Anne Murray), A Lesson in Leaving (late Dottie West), Who's Holding Donna Now? (DeBarge), Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart (co-written by Steve Perry). Suggested songs: 1 Toto performs I Won't Hold You Back. 2 Debarge performs Who's Holding Donna Now?
The one guy in this song is Michael McDonald who was the lead singer for the Doobie Brothers and then he went solo on the 80s I believe. Not sure if he joined TOTO or was just making a guest appearance for this song.
My favorite ToTo song!! Is this a break up song or a song of everlasting love 💕💕💕.. I think it's both. Have you guys reacted to Ambrosia's "you're the only woman" I love you guys. I noticed Jay wears a lot of Bengals gear- are you originally from Cincy?
PrababLy the best musicians of the 80s...they wrote for Michael jackson and did a lot behind the scenes. They glide when they plat. Very very ahead of times
The Lead vocals are by the incredible guitarist, Steve Lukather. The vocals on Hold the Line were by Bobby Kimball, who due to drug problems floated in &out of the group. The Porcaro Brothers Steve, Mike & Jeff are playing keyboards, bass &drums. David Paich, son of famous Jazz arranger & composer Marty Paich, is also playing keyboards.
This song is a masterpiece. Those guys were some of the most sought-after session musicians in the business before they even formed TOTO, and then the brothers Porcaro and friends got in a band.
Two underrated Toto songs "99" and "Georgy Porgy" the two of you should get around to those. P.S. That's Michael McDonald on background vocals and you get a few glimps of him in the video.
I can't hear 99 without thinking of Barbara Feldon who played Agent 99 from the hit TV show Get Smart. She was gorgeous and now she is about 99 almost. And probably still beautiful ❤️ Check out Get Smart on TH-cam.
Toto is what you get when you gather a bunch of studio session musicians and have them put together an album. And any musician with extensive session experience is worth their weight in gold.
I was fortunate enough to have met TOTO in 1979 back stage at a 3 day event at the L.A. Coliseum. They are one of most talented bands of all time. Each member is a master at their craft of producing great music. Steve’s guitar playing is among the best ever.
Michael McDonald doing backup. Can’t go wrong. He also sang with the Doobie Brothers and a great solo career. Check him out. A voice you can’t forget.
Thanks for adding that info about Michael Mcdonald. His voice is unmistakeable.
I was just going to point that out.
Yeah. They need more Michael McDonald in their lives!
They reacted to "On my own" Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle.
That man was all over the place in the 80s. It was great.
Michael McDonald's voice is just freaking angelic!
I think a hidden gem by Toto is "99". Check it out. And the guitar solo on "Rosanna" is insane!
YES... 99 was one of those songs that I loved, and did not figure out for so long it was Toto... its almost constantly pops into my head
Great song
Stranger in Town is another hidden gem
@@Sportsref13 one of their best songs!!!
Toto had a bunch of great songs about women.. Rosanna, 99, Melanie, Pamela, Elenore, and even Africa 🥰
Listen to "I Won't Hold You Back" by Toto. Such a beautiful song!
As amazing as this song is, they have an even better ballad: "I Won't Hold You Back"!!!!!!!
I agree as well, my FAVORITE Toto song! Thank you for mentioning it!
Yes! Such a great song
I just came to the comments to suggest that song!
Love that song!
Rick Beato recently called it Toto's overall best song. High praise.
This song is CRAZY underrated. I'm glad you guys came across it.
So is that entire album.
As is the follow up single, "Without Your Love"
One of the most beautiful songs of all time
There have been numerous TOTO lead vocalists
Bobby Kimball sang on Hold The Line.
Steve Lukather is singing lead on this one and many others...Gorgy Porgy...lots of em
99
@@hotmessexpress00 Yeah, and one of my personal favourites "Stop loving you". It hit hard here in Sweden.
@@hotmessexpress00 Definitely. If you look at the current Toto lineup, Joseph and Steve Lukather are the only members left from the 70s and 80s.
Yess Lea is a beautiful song!
Dan Fogleberg, "Go Down Easy", is my favorite of his
Steely Dan and Toto; my top groups ever😃
Agreed, all great artists! Really need to do Leader of The Band.. That is iconic :O
And....Toto is NOT in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame which is unbelievable to me.
This just screams ‘80’s. I love it!
Just Like Hold the line Screams 70s Released in 1978 ,,
"I Won't Hold You Back" is another great ballad by "Toto".
Oh my goodness! I watch this video every week because I’m obsessed with TOTO. I love that Michael McDonald sings back up on this. Such a beautiful song 💙💙
Steve Lukather's guitar solo is sooo beautiful. The tone, the notes, the timing...
Michael McDonald on the back up vocals, icing on the cake. This is one of my all-time favorites. Great choice!
Toto's "I Won't Hold You Back" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to. The beginning is so haunting and the song brings tears to my eyes. I really hope the next song you guys play by them is this one. You will like it.
Hold the Line Is by far my fav Toto song From 1978
Rick Beato recently did an analysis of this song - it is really, really complex musically... which makes it sound effortlessly gorgeous!
Es preciosa, aún mejor que ésta.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "I Won't Hold You Back" !!
Amber caught it. In my opinion, one of the simplest lines written, and still one of the best..."as soon as forever is through, I'll be over you".
(His dad's the guy who did the "Star Wars" theme.)
Eventually, in 1998, Kimball returns, but that's a different band by then.
A very musical family as four of John Williams grandkids are musicians. I like some stuff from two of them, The Belle Brigade.
I like TOTO when it had Paich, Kimball, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Steve Lukather......
This song is sung by Lukather though. So, not a new singer.
@@sampono1962 this lineup never happened on record.
Bringing back all my high school feelings right here....

Georgy Porgy is definitely insane

I think they should do an album. Either "Toto" or "Hydra" would be awesome. I listened to each of those end to end so many times.
I Won't Hold You Back is great but haunts me. Too nostalgic.
Agreed, some good calls here, yet Africa is still my favorite!
Pamela is my favorite Toto song.
"I'll Supply The Love" 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Toto is actually a very underrated band. Really talented.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It’s a vibe…perfect cruising/thinking music.❤️
Minha também 👏👏
This was the late 80’s. This song was on point with what was popular in that era. Love it.
You guys are on a roll tonight - doing TWO of my favourite ballads. Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins have two of the most distinctive voices of the 80's. Just LOVE this song :)
One of my Toto faves. Love the subtle tones of Michael McDonald in this track👍
Really Really would like to recommend Toto's "I will remember You" Steve Lukather wrote this not for a girl, but for Jeff Porcaro, the former drummer of Toto, who had died. Another, Non-Banger", Just beautiful.

toto - i won't hold you back
RIP Jeff and Mike... two of the greatest musicians ever. My fav band.
One of my favorite lyrics of alll time is in this song. "As soon as forever is through, I'll be over you." Beautiful.
Great selection!

Just suggested that myself; my favorite Toto song, and then they will HAVE to do Cheryl Lynn “To Be Real” 🪩

Toto recorded a song with Cheryl Lynn ("To Be Real"), called "Georgy Porgy," which hit for a while on the radio, in about 1978. It's real rhythmic and has a funky pop bossa nova beat to it!

My favorite Toto song! 😍
She is SO in tune with the lyrics on this! She feels it.
AGAIN, TOTO, LIKE THE EAGLES, WAS A COLLECTION OF STUDIO MUSICIANS ... EACH AWESOME IN THEIR OWN RIGHT!

YES! Toto with Steve Lukather on vocals. Love this. Thank you.
This one of my favorite Toto songs along with Anna both beautiful ballads I’m a sucker for sappy music and bands like Chicago Toto and journey Deliver
Such a Beatiful Depressing song that is my favorite of all their songs it sometimes brings me to tears remembering the fun days of the 80's.
Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers pitching in on the background vocals!
yep.. Michael McDonald it is....
You can pretty much copy and paste this comment into every song ever made.
My favorite Toto song is a ballad called “I Won’t Hold You Back”. Came out in 1982 (my Sr year).
I see that Thursday was Amber day - 3 ballads bring ALL the feels!!!
I haven't heard this song in such a long time, and it brought back a time in my life that was so good but then it didn't work out like we hoped it would. But this song mad me cry because of the lost memories.
my reaction as well 💜
I could write a book on my love for this song. Damn this was a memory and emotion evoker. Steve, Bobby…whomever does the vocals, it’s always a winner.
Such a heartfelt and heartbreaking song about endless love - this is their best song. Period.
Love how Michael Mcdonald is just hanging out, adding in a little back-up help here and there. Toto trades off lead vocals between three guys. The talent runneth over.
Thanks for reacting to my favourite Toto ballad.

I Won't Hold You Back Now is Toto's finest moment
Not even close.
Every Toto Album has one incredible Luke ballad.
The reason you noticed a different sound in the voice is because it's a different singer from Africa and Hold the Line. Did you see and hear Micheal McDonald in the background?
the AMAZING and overlooked Jeff Porcaro... ( phenomenal song, outstanding production, and Michael McDonald helping out on vocals. )
Did you notice the cameo by Michael McDonald?
F@#$ Yeah!
"I'll Be Over You" peaked @ #11 in 1986. It was Toto's 12th single (of 14 total) to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Toto hit the Top 10 4 times including one #1 single ("Africa" / 1982).

God this song takes me back. I was a senior in High School. Great old song! Great times. Thank you so much for this.
One of my favorite Toto songs. Glad you checked it out. Try “Good For You,” “Afraid of Love,” and “Stop Loving You”
Do next these from them : "Angel don't cry" , "'I'LL supply the love", "Endless", "Holyanna", "Hydra", "All us boys" , "99" & "Stranger in town"
