this is the only movie ive seen where the hero and the villian not only never meet but never even talk to each other
That makes the film more special
That wasn't Zorg shooting at Leeloo?
I bet there are plenty that we just don't really think about. Sauron and Frodo come to mind... though you could argue in the film version they interact.
zorg isn't the villain he's the dragon
I hear this a lot but infact zorg/shadow ball are the villains and leelu is the hero... so they do interact
The costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. I love Gary Oldman in this movie. So unhinged.
Oddly enough Gary oldman did not like this role, I still think it was a great role for him
He created over 1000 costumes for the film.
@@Dan-Cline Well he sure pulled it off nonetheless.
A character with subtle danger just below the surface. Different to his character in True Romance. haha
I say "Aziz Light" every time I turn on a light. It's a thing. 😅
I prefer "Illuminate!"
😂
Hahaha I can totally see that
@@bryanb3352 THey call him the DEMOLITION MAN
@@bryanb3352 Demolition Man reference ;)
"GIMME THE CASH!" is peak cinema.
Great reaction.
That's a nice hat.☺️
Such a funny scene in a film packed with them.😁
@@davidmaddox9119 I like the 90% filter cigarettes
@@Ray.Norrish It's going that way for sure.🚬Great ideas throughout this movie.☝️💡
Anyone else notice that the letter firing Korben had a Zorg logo on it? He wasn't pink-slipped because of his licence problems, but because Jeanbaptiste Emanuel Zorg said "Fire one million."
Korben was working for Zorg's companies. So when the two "almost meet" on the cruise spaceship and Korben takes Zorg's ship, it's a commentary on how there's a divide between the bourgeoisie and the common man.
Good thing he didn't fire Corben Dallas' mother! That would really be the end of the world! 😂
Zorg even says do it from one the smaller companies, like the cabs
Good point, but with no license he probably would have been fired anyway.
I took my kid brother to see this in the theater. My mom had asked me previously, "Hey, this movie isn't inappropriate, right?". I told I was sure it was fine, it's just a fun PG13 scifi movie. Little did I know that Milla Jovovich was gonna be popping of her top multiple times. I told my brother after the movie that there was no need to go mentioning that bit to mom. And he never did! Fast forward like 25 years and I get a phone call from my mom. She had just watched the movie and was calling me to lecture me about having taken my 13 year old brother to it. My defense was that of course I had no idea. But it was almost as funny of a situation as the plot to this movie! 😂😂😂
@@Daniel_Rood "I immediately covered our eyes" would be my defense 😅
It's really just the one time that you see anything... and as someone who was a 12 year old boy when this came out, i can safely say my innocence had already been compromised well before that scene solidified me as a Milla fan.
but imo
@@dannykent6190 Oh yeah, Milla J was always going to make or break this film. She's simultaneously gorgeous and ridiculously cute, but also completely believable as a kick-ass warrior and immensely powerful being.
Nobody recognizes the Luke Perry cameo anymore. Yet another sign I'm getting old.
Every time I hear him say, “ so, I’ve got some time.” I choke back tears. RIP.
That's not really fair because he was a regular on the early seasons on "Riverdale" as Pop Andrews before his passing, and that show's pretty young. I guess you know him from the original "Beverly Hills 90210".
He stole that scene. His character feels like a real character, with a past and a unique point of view. I want to see more of that guy. Perry mostly gets remembered as a heartthrob, but he was a hell of an actor.
@@Madbandit77 Also the Buffy movie!
The 30 yr old "teen" from 90210 show.
What makes this movie great is that its entirely self-aware and over-the-top, and that's the point. The plot embraces its own absurdity, and leans into its own campy humor. Willis, Tucker, Jovovich, Oldman, Holm, and Lister as the President were well-cast in their roles.
This is one of my favorites. Anytime it's on TV, I just let it play. My favorite line is: "Uhh, negative. I am a meat popsicle."
Director Luc Besson developed the Universal Language that Leeloo speaks. He started developing the story as a teenager, including the language. Milla Jovovich had to learn the language, and she could converse with Besson in that language (which probably led to their marriage later, but they divorced after a few years). The language has a dictionary of around 400 words.
The Diva, Pavalaguna, was played by Besson's then-girlfriend, Maiwen Bescoe, but it was a big secret who played the role for years. No one knew until they released a special edition DVD with an extensive set of BTS features, including a documentary on the making of the movie. She did not sing the song, though. The entire thing was recorded by an Albanian soprano named Inva Mula. It was recorded in pieces. The first part was the aria "Il Dolce Suono," often called the "mad scene" from the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor by Donizetti. "The Dive Dance" was written by film composer Eric Serra and was recorded in pieces and then put together to sound complete. It was written to be unsingable. A few operatic sopranos have managed to do it in one go and post the results on TH-cam.
Chris Tucker was not the first choice for the role of Ruby Rhod. The late music legend Prince was first choice and wanted to play the part but had prior touring commitments that could not be changed so that he could take the role. This is why Ruby has such flamboyant costumes, designed by uber-designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.
The overall production design for the film was done by two heroes of Luc Besson's. French comic book artists Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, whose work in the science fiction realm had inspired much of the original story as Besson created it as a teen. In particular, Jean-Claude Mézières comic Valerian and Laureline inspired The Fifth Element. Based on that comic, Besson would later make the film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) with Dale DeHaan, Cara Delevigne, and Rihanna. It's not the best, but it is fun with some fantastic visuals.
I love that line too.
And “you are fired!”
a saturday afternoon matinee double feature with this and "Galaxy Quest"
Demolition Man is another good sci-fi/comedy that fits well with them.
When recreated Leeloo they just created how she already looked. She was inside the sarcophagus at the beginning.
I remember seeing this with a friend randomly when I was sleeping over at his house, we where bored and went to the theatre not knowing what to expect and to this day is my favorite scifi/action/comedy ever
Definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.
Sending Prayers for Bruce Willis and his family. 🙏
He is such an amazing actor. 💯
Absolutely Amazing Reaction Guys 🙌👏🤝😎
Nice to see Chandra finally received her Multi-pass.
"Mool-ti pass!"
One of my favourite little details in this movie is that Zorg going to Phloston saved everyone in THREE different ways.
A) If he hadn't set his own bomb, the bomb detector wouldn't have gone off with enough time for everyone to get out. (The other bomb was only a 5 second countdown)
B) If he hadn't come back, they wouldn't have had a ship to escape on.
C) Disarming HIS bomb gave them the extra few seconds to escape from the second bomb (Which almost got them).
Luc Besson wrote the storyline for this movie when he was a teenager (so even younger than Matt Damon, who started writing "Good Will Hunting" at university). He really did invent that language, him and Milla were actually speaking it also off-camera. Most of the extras in this movie were real supermodels.
I love these cuts between the scenes and consider it one of the top-10 best movies ever made.
No, it's 11th best.
Mila and the director made up her language together. She said they spent hours talking this gibberish to each other. 😁
Rip Luke Perry. You crushed it on 90210 man.
It did far better globally than in the US but I absolutely love "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" which is by the same director and based on the comics that heavily inspired The Fifth Element and even Star Wars.
Upvoting that suggestion, it is a really fun sci-fi film as well, you should definitely watch it if you haven't already.
I think she was misunderstanding. They weren’t setting out to create the perfect being. They were just re-creating that being. It just happened to be the Fifth Element
Every man on Earth wanted tor 'rescue' Milla Jovovich when this movie came out.
This was a crazy non Hollywood movie. It holds up over time with great characters, story and actors really giving their all. It’s corny a f, but it is a great movie to just put in the player and enjoy
Milla Jovovich actually dyed her hair orange for the role. While filming her hair started to become damage and fade. Because of that they switched to an orange wig. While most don’t notice on first watch. You can really see the differences if you keep an eye out for it.
Amazing that you watched Total Recall two days ago and now The Fifth Element! These two are my favourite fun-sci-fi-action movies. Such a good time!
The Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge weren't built up; the sea level has dropped by hundreds of feet.
💜✋ There were hundreds of costumes in this film, all designed by the famous fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.
And you are both right, these costumes are beautiful! This entire fantastic film is now basically iconic! Amazing day ... ✋💜
Hands down, one of the greatest sci-fi action films, ever!
That rug is Sully from Monsters Inc. He really ties the room together.
It really did tie the room together
😂
Ok Dude... 😅
This movie perfectly illustrates why Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors. He's not only an exceptional actor, but an incredible chameleon on the level of Meryl Streep, and like her he's not afraid to take on many different types of roles including silly ones and have fun.
Absolutely agree. Don't remember which of Mr Oldman's many movies it was, but a friend of mine - after having seen it several times - said "I *just* found out that was Gary Oldman!" 😄
Recent: Slow Horses on Apple TV.
Yeah, he's a different character in every movie he does.
The special effects hold up pretty well mainly because they weren't doing too much heavy lifting back then. You're mostly focusing on the characters and their antics (and outfits!). I love this film.
4:27 Small inaccuracy here. The Mauser C96 was first produced in 1896, but the full auto version used here was not developed until the 1930s.
Chris tucker as Ruby Rodd goes down as one of the greatest in film, the energy he brings is off the scale 😂❤
They should have ditched him after the opera though. He stops contributing to the story and just necomes annoying.
@@rodentnolastname6612agreed, but I’ve always suspected they knew that and did it on purpose.
7:45 the guy attempting to Rob Bruce Willis did a lot of improv in that part and he had everyone laughing and you could tell Bruce Willis was really struggling 🤣 Love the reviews!
And yes they did invent a language for the movie the blue lady was a real opera singer, this was added info on the disc as a interview & documentary. This was a great sifi with a great reaction.
@@duanetelesha The “blue lady” wasn’t a real opera singer. The Diva was portrayed in the film by Maïwenn Le Besco. The singing was dubbed in from a recording of Inva Mula who actually _is_ an opera singer.
This movie when it came out was completely under the radar but its so Good! The set design, costumes, characters, the whole world building is next level
They did develop a language for the movie. The actress and the director often spoke it to each other for practice
"You can't just slap a priest." Well, he just did.
"Big bada-boom!" Amazing cast (Milla is perfect as Leeloo), amazing script and directing, amazing design of environments, costumes and creatures, just an amazing movie.
You should really watch the 2017 spiritual sequel "Valerian and the City of s Thousand Planets" also by Luc Besson. It's similar in style, just as wacky and the special effects are amazing. I rewatched it the other day in 3D on my VR headset and it still holds up great 👍
YES they did develop a language for Leeloo which was invented by director Luc Besson and consisted of around 400 words specifically created for the film; Milla Jovovich actually learned the language and used to speak it with Luc who I think she married.
If you notice on the Mondoshawans costume there is a small camera between the six purple glowing parts on the top and that is because the people wearing the suits have a screen inside linked to it so they can see where they are going.
Bruin James was a great character actor who did many memorable roles in the late 70’s to his passing .
One of my favorite sci-fi movies. It's just so over the top yet is engaging. Gary Goldman is such a terrific actor, his variety of characters portrayed is so vast. Here he is as Zorg, he was Dracula, then Winston Churchill....brilliant. The character lineup is not what anyone would come up with in the traditional sense lol. All the side stories intertwined perfectly & with the characters as well. You asked for other sci-fi films with special effects, here's my #1 suggestion; "Metropolis". Don't let the fact it's a silent film from 1927 scare you away. It's absolutely fantastic & the effects are mesmerizing. Additionally, it poses a great thought-provoking storyline as well. Hope you consider it. Enjoying your channel, you have some very good commentary.
The first half of the opera singing is an actual aria from Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor, the second half is an original composition by Eric Serra, Besson's main film music composer.
Much of the design is by one of my favorite artists, Jean Giraud (aka Moebius).
Nice. One of a handful of movies I must watch at least once a year. Besson is a stylistic genius. And Gary Oldman, as always, steals the show. Such great fun.
Hello Chandra & Jordan!😊 You guys should check out another futuristic film that blends violence with comedy. It is "Demolition Man" (1993) with Sylvester Stallone. The film uses many practical effects. This film is also one of my favorite futuristic films. The ensemble cast here is awesome and the practical effects and makeup is great. Super reactions to this very well made film, Guys!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey Mike!! Thanks ❤ That movie has been recommended a lot actually... we'll definitely be throwing it on a poll soon :)
I've seen this movie hundreds of times. In my top 5 all-time, for sure. It's a perfect movie. Great reaction, glad you loved it!
Chandra's enthusiasm is adorable! Always a fun watch-along with you both. Thanks 🙂
Never get tired of this movie!
I loved how they made an electronic 'bug' out of a cockroach bug - LOL! Still one of my faves, and worthy of a copy for the private collection. The flying Chinese Junk peddling fast foods is a callback to Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER (1982), as well as the flying cars and grunge of future L.A.
20:15 That's the Brooklyn Bridge - sea level is considerably lower in this era and the city has built downwards to the new shoreline. The high up buildings where Corben lives were at ground level in our time. When you said that the Statue of Liberty was built "up and up and up" at 27:02 it actually hasn't moved. ^_~
Why does Chandra say "sci FI" like Christopher Walken, with the accent on the "fi"? 😂 She did it twice at the start! Totally awesome.
The shot with Leeloo from above at the end was the same as the one with the stewardess and Ruby and also the shot from the sarcophagus at the beginning. So the stewardess scene is actually a hint on what it takes to "activate" the 5th element.
I saw it in theaters. One of the very few OG movies I remember seeing in the cinema when I was a child. Examples: Apollo 13, Jurassic Park, Star Wars 1997 remasters, and this.
Glad you two did this! One of my favorite movies to just put on when I'm sick or just feeling blah and get happy and excited! Great reaction!
I can't believe you guys have never heard of Armageddon with Bruce Willis tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis or even sixth sense with Bruce Willis... Those much better than the fifth Element
🤣 23:08 Mr Maplenuts is one of the first people to make that connection, “They can rebuild a whole person from a handful of cells…” Brilliant!
Such a great film, it has a level of creativity you don't see very often in movies out of Hollywood.
"I'd like to take a few pictures...for the archives."
I too have a folder named "The Archives" on my computer. ;)
Immortal (Ad Vitam) was a sci-fi film that you guys would enjoy. Essentially take everything from fifth element and just invert it. Warm red tones and a fast pace replaced by melancholic blues and a slow brooding story, fun and energetic music is replaced by soothing ambient, while both have interesting designs and an inhuman protagonist in a future earth whose mysteries are tied to ancient egypt.
I love the range of Ian Holms. He played Father Vito Cornelius here and also played Ash, the science officer in Alien.
And Bilbo...
Outfits designs are by Jean Paul Gautier by the way
3:20 Adam Savage just showed one of these costumes on his channel Tested. It's really cool to see outside of the movie. He also showed the miniature of that ship from the beginning in a previous video.
Nothing else really comes close to this movie in terms of world building, it's phenomenal!
I laughed out loud at the end, because the answer to "what is the FIFTH element?" came straight out of a cartoon: Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
That young man who is bored in the 80's was a very famous actor that all the girls wanted, Luke Perry. Take a look at his biography and be amazed.
Milla Jovovich, the Supreme Being, the Fifth Element, five years after this film began a series of films in which she can be enjoyed much more: Resident Evil.
You may think it's a cool detail, but lights coming out of the ground during an alarm can only cause a lot of people to trip, adding to the chaos.
Couldn't be more excited for a reaction from you. This movie is iconic.
It took me many viewings (I can be slow) to realize that the fisted glove from which the "Supreme Being" is reconstructed is the same as the one on the side of the sarcophagus that floats from the Egyptian tomb, along with the stones.
Most reactors are traumatized by Evil Dead 1 and never get to relish in the ridiculous 3 stooges humor of part 2 and 3. They’re loads of fun! Part 2 dark and cheesy humor & part 3 is mostly cheesy humor. Hell It’s worth the watch if only for the practical effects!
This movie deserves more fandom!
Now you need to watch Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets.
It's essentially the spiritual sequel to The Fifth Element.
Same director, same insane approach to a massive bewildering sci-fi world.
Not as good.
This movie just has so much personality. It did its own thing. Sure some of it might seem a bit silly, but you have to respect that. It also has a lot of great phrases that people still use today. My favorite is "I only speak two languages, english and bad english"
Great movie.
All the very best.
Cheers.
"Are you classified as human?"
"Negative, I am a meat popsicle."
Fun Fact: The wonder on Bruce Willis' face when the Diva (Maïwenn) sings is real. That was the first time he'd heard it and seen the actress in full make-up.
Big Bada Boom Fact: The explosion in the Fhloston main hall was the largest indoor explosion ever filmed. The resulting fire almost went beyond control. It took twenty-five minutes to put out.
Lost In Translation Fact: The "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo, was invented by co-writer and director Luc Besson and further refined by Milla Jovovich, who had little trouble learning and developing it, as she was already fluent in four languages. The language had only four hundred words. He and Milla Jovovich held conversations, and wrote letters to each other in the language as practice. By the end of filming, they were able to have full conversations in this language.
Bad Timing Fact: The hero, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), and the villain, Jean Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gray Oldman), never meet, nor do they communicate with each other in any way. They are aware of each other (Korben used to work for Zorg's company and Zorg knows that Korben won the contest) but they are unaware of the other's involvement in the main plot (getting the stones). The only time they appear in the same scene together is at the end when Korben flees towards Fhloston's hotel's hangar while Zorg is just returning from it. They pass but just miss one another putting them in the same shot together for just a few frames.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Diva Plavalaguna (Maïwenn) sings the "Il dolce suono" aria from the opera, Lucia de Lammermoor. It is one of the most difficult arias because of its length, its soaring arpeggios, and the high F above high C. When composer Éric Serra showed soprano Inva Mula (who dubs the voice of the Diva) the sheet music for the Diva Dance, she reportedly smiled and relayed to him that some of the notes written were not humanly possible to achieve, because the human voice cannot change notes that fast. Hence, she performed the notes in isolation, one by one, as opposed to consecutively singing them all together, and they digitized the notes to fit the music. There are a few moments when you can hear the differences in the vocal tones of the Diva's voice. It has since been done for real by several singers.
I did not know the explosion thing. You have ED-duh-mah-cated me, and I am grateful to you for it!
Predator fact : Besson (director) started dating and grooming Maïwenn (the diva) as she was 15 and he was 31. He broke up with her and started dating Mila Jovovich(leeloo) after shooting the fifth element. It is believed and believable that Leon (another of the movies he directed) was partly inspired by the relation with the teenager. So he's a big PoS.
You're welcome! I do this to share my love for cinema.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
did my comment disappear?
edit : anyway, luc besson(the director) is a predator and a groomer who dated a 15 years(Maïwenn/the diva) old as he was 31.
@@IlNyaPasdOrchestre except that whole thing was dropped due to lack of evidence. Despite multiple investigations they didn't have anything to prove he did that.

I just had to look him up... I didn't realize he's a fashion designer?! No wonder the costumes are so amazing!
@ yep!
I love this movie. Especially Ruby. Chris Rock is a master in this role.
I loved the canon hairdo as well.
The original singer (not the actress) behind "Diva's Dance" (music composed based on the music "Il Dolce Suono" from the opera Lucia de Lammmer moor) music is the late amazing opera singer INVA MULA🌹
33:37 Yup, it was, after all, the largest indoor explosion in a movie at the time. (don't know now, though didn't find any others after a quick search)
The Blob from the 80s is an excellent and fun effects-laden film. Great review of The Fifth Element. It gets better with age. The cast even outside of the main actors is packed with dozens of famous British (and American) faces.
The Diva song became so popular that there are videos of other singers singing it.
Egypt 1914. World War One. The aliens had to take the stones away from earth. The British Expeditionary Force coming from Egypt would advance into Gaza against the Ottomans. Check out The Lighthorseman (1987) showcasing the epic cavalry charge of the Australian Lighthorse in the Battle of Beersheba 1917.
Which also explains why the (British or Australian)professor asked: "Are you Germans?"
I don't know if many North Americans completely understood that scene back in 1997, but hardly any get it at first watch today(I do, but I'm a history nerd). I figure Luc Besson, being continental French, assumed it would all be obvious to all audiences.
Sci-Fi with special effects? Try Dark City, a cult classic.
Hiya Maplenuts! Fellow Canadian, here!
As Canadians, it would be fitting for you to react to a series that is shot in Canada, right? ;-]
And since you made a point of mentioning that you are both big fans of sci-fi and special FX, this is right up your alley.
The show is "The Expanse" - A six season masterclass in modern storytelling. It is based on a series of novels, and the authors are involved throughout all six seasons. The show had been called 'Game of Thrones in space' by many... that's how intricate the worldbuilding is. And the space effects are second to none! (Trust me, I've been watching science fiction for over 60 years, so when I tell you this is second to none, I really mean it.)
The series is not for the faint of heart, and because it is so well made, it has little left in the budget for superfluous stuff like explaining things before they happen -- no hand-holding here, so your full attention is required.
The first season is a developing mystery, as it builds a most believable world around you. And for the second and third seasons, I highly recommend you have your chairs fitted with seatbelts! ;-]
The writing, the acting, the production values... everything coming together to make you feel for the future.
I absolutely love you guys I hope to become a patron soon...😊😊😊
I saw this movie more times in the theater than any other movie. 7 Times. It's because all my friends and friends of friends had to see it. It was such a weird and fun movie for the time.

Bruce Willis stars in both "The Fifth Element" and "The Sixth Sense." What could it all mean? 😂
That 12 Monkeys might make it as far as 16 Blocks, but are guaranteed to go the Whole Nine Yards, Once Upon a Time in Venice.
Bruce’s ex-wife Demi Moore starred in ‘The Seventh Sign’ 1998.😳
I think but I'm not entirely sure that... he might be an actor.
@@earth2saka You sure about that? Might just be a coincidence...
Don't forget "Lucky Number Slevin"
Cult classic, one of my favorite movies ever. Did you notice what hat the guy in the hallway was wearing..?
" Are you German ?"
A negative nod from the big Mondoshawan aliens.
Lol, lol !
Fun fact that song the Blue singer performs is called Diva's Dance. It was designed not be sung by an actual human. And of course singers took that as a challenge. I don't think anyone has done it 100% accurate yet but a few have gotten close enough that it's basically good enough. There's a nice video on here that collected a bunch of people's attempts at it.
The flying cars came about because the director was told as a kid in the future there would be flying cars. Since we still didn't have them, he put them in the movie.
My kids asked why we don't have flying cars yet. I said, "We do! They're called helicopters. What you mean is why don't we have propulsion/fuel systems that can carry a 2 ton car through the air without adding significantly to the form factor, and that's because magic isn't real."
They got so mad at me 😂
I just come back from watching your patreon reaction^^ Amazing movie (this I already knew) and really cool reaction guys!
Clothes by Jean Paul Gaultier.Wacky and so creative.
Such a fun adventure,a true original that is so funny, inventive, action packed and endlessly quoteable.😁👌
You folks will love this!☺️
If you liked this space opera you should watch the film Valerian by the same director Luc Besson. It's even more space opera and a bit more serious.
It's interesting that Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman are only in the same scene for less than a second.
This movie is wild and incredibly fun.
The 'shoot first and ask questions later,' general: John Neville, who directed the Grand Theatre in London Ontario, Canada for a time. I had the pleasure of seeing him in _Arsenic and Old Lace_ on that stage. Also loved his 'trust no one.' in _X-Files_.
He also played the titular hero in Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen". Worth reacting to.
@@Madbandit77 yes, with a young Sarah Polley as well.
This is one of my favorite movies.
The funky part of the Diva Opera was actually written to not be humanly possible to where you have to use synthesized notes to pull it off, but a few people can actually do it. I think the spike grenade actually influenced the design on Halo III because it was 10 years before that game came out. Haven't seen this movie in a min. and just realizing the priest is Bilbo from LotR. That's the dude from There's Something About Mary 28:20 wild.
I suggest looking into the Sci-fy/Action/Thriller movie with Tom Cruise named Minority Report.
