Its one of THE hardest drum grooves to play correctly! Drummers like me LITERALLY judge eachothers skill levels on "Yeah... but can you play 'Roseanna' correctly?!?!" 💯😎
jeff porcaro was one in a billion kind of drummer. the rosanna beat is easy, but giving it life like how jeff played it? hardest thing to do, and that's the mystery. because this is the one song can easily felt really off without jeff's feel, even if the drummer played all the correct notes.
@@kierstenridgway4634 The members were almost the equivalent to 60's studio group The Wrecking Crew who played on countless hits of that era. However Wrecking Crew was a studio ensemble, while Toto was a group of studio musicians who decided to form a decent band. However they did continue parallel studio career as well. One early example of Jeff Porcaro on drums would be Leo Sayer song "When I Need You". Lee Ritenour's piece "Mr. Briefcase" has Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate on it. Steve Lukather plays the main guitar riff for Michael Jackson's "Beat It", and also plays bass on that song, with most of the Toto also on it.
Toto was THE studio band for Michael Jackson on the "Thriller" album. This was the same chain link fence set used in the "Beat It" video. the horns from Chicago are on this as well👍
That model dancer is Cynthia Rhodes from Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. This song was written in honor of actress , Rosanna Arquette. Check out Africa by Toto as well.

Great reaction guys. Just a little trivia. Most of these guys were session musicians before forming Toto. They recorded with some of the biggest artist in the 70's, Steely Dan, Seals n Crofts and Sonny n Cher. The guitarist, Steve Lukather and drummer Steve Porcaro played on Michael Jacksons Thriller album. Specifically Beat It and Human Nature. All great musicians.👍😎

All members are world class musicians, but drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarist Steve "Luke" Lukather, are considered among the greatest on their instrumetn in rock history.

These boys are top notch musicians, did loads of studio work before they went out on their own. Jeff Pocaro was one of the best in the business and in history, he died very young sadly. Just a beast on that kit! What a band!
Listening to this on the bus to school in the 80’s. Takes me back to childhood. This had to be around 83 maybe thinking of my age then. Toto had some classics.
The guitarist played the guitar for Beat it. Eddie Van Haken played the famous solo but it was Steve Lukather who did the rest of the guitar work. As others have mentioned there's not many songs from the 80s that some member of Toto wasn't playing on.
The video seems like inspired by the musical "West Side Story". If you listen the Boz Scaggs song "Lowdown" or the album "Silk Degrees" , you can hear drummer Jeff Porcaro, keyboardist composer David Paich and bassist David Hungate on pre Toto phase.

I don't care how many times I hear this song, I loved it the moment I heard it. But the defining moment for me. The moment I knew my ambitions as a budding musician was facing a seriously steep learning curve was the moment I saw the sheet music for this song. The time signature was in 12/4...I was 15...and I knew then...Toto was on another level.
gotta remember that these guys were studio musicians in high demand and they just decided to put their own music out. Great lead singer and Steve Lukather on guitar he just wails at the end. The Drummer, the late, great Jeff Porcaro with that shuffle beat that became so identifiable from this song. This album had many hits. I would recommend hearing Hold the Line for a completely different beat and some epic guitar work.
Late drummer Jeff Porcaro explained numerous times how he came up with the Rosanna half-time shuffle... it has elements of 2 songs: 1. Led Zeppelin's John Bonham performance of "Fool In The Rain" & Steely Dan's Bernard Purdie performance of "Babylon Sisters". He is simple a legend in the drumming world. Peace!
Steve Lukather, the lead guitarrist and second vocalist of Toto has played guitar as a session musician for some of the biggest hits of the past. A few artists he played with Michael Jackson (Beat it, Billie Jean etc.), Lionel Ritchie (Running With the Night), Donna Summer (She Works Hard for the Money), Chicago (Hard Habit to Break), Richard Marx(Repeat Offender), George Benson (Give Me the Night), Elton John (I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That), Paul McCartney (No More Lonely Nights) and many many more. Not only did he play on these, but he also produced music and wrote for a lot of these and other artists. Chances are, if it was a hit in the 80s, Steve was playing on it.

A little more than a year ago, I put together the pieces of an incredibly intricate web surrounding this song... The dancer is Cynthia Rhodes. She played Penny in 'Dirty Dancing'. The song is about actress Rosanna Arquette who not only WAS a dancer, but appears in Pulp Fiction as drug dealer Lance's pierced girlfriend. When u connect Penny's post abortion condition to Uma Thurman's Overdose condition on Lance's floor, then link the Pulp soundtrack cut 'Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon' to Dirty Dancing character 'Baby' who basically grew up in that film witnessing those crazy events, the Pulp Fiction dance between Travolta and Thurman matches Baby and Johnny's 'Time of My Life' finale. It's all connected.
It's actually about the beautiful actress Rosanna Arquette, who had a brief relationship with a band member right before this came out.. This is ridiculously well produced, and played.
Great reaction guys...well 2 out of 3 anyway. Fun fact #1: MJ liked this video enough to borrow the theme for Beat It. #2: Patrick Swayze was one of the dancers.
The groove was originally supposed to be like a Bo Diddley Grove. The drummer J. Porcaro came in and said no, this is the groove. Listen close and you can hear the Bo Diddley in it. The rest is groove history.
Just stumbled across you guys. Nice reaction. Love Toto. If you haven't reacted to this one already, take a look at Queensryche - Take Hold of the Flame (Live in Tokyo, 1984). Amazing band! Amazing vocals!
Having modulations in a song does not make it "Four songs in one." A song is not defined by having just one riff and melody. Dynamics and modulations in key or chord structures, a bridge -- all these things are simply common songwriting and arranging techniques for generations. It's just that we don't hear those things so much anymore. You guys are so entertaining as a bunch, though -- and it's a really good reaction channel you guys run. Kudos!!

Dynamics and modulations in key or chord structures, a bridge -- all these things are simply common songwriting and arranging techniques for generations. It's just that we don't hear those things so much anymore. You guys are so entertaining as a bunch, though -- and it's a really good reaction channel you guys run. Kudos!!
The guy doing all the "Riffin" is David Paich who wrote the entire song...with a West Side Story vibe...
If you guys have a chance listen to TOTO IV (I mean the whole album) the shear number of first rate cuts on one album will blow your minds!
