Is this the best classic Car Cave Collection in Scotland? Incredible Private Garage Tour

  • Located inside the most unassuming of Scottish drab farm buildings, this colourful car haven is the secret collection and creation of Wullie Hamilton and his wife Morean from Kilmarnock. The last place you'd expect to find a line of retro rally motorsport prepped rwd Fords, a flawless GT40 recreation, a sprinkling of special edition Triumph motorbikes, BTCC Hillman Imp and a B.A.R Honda F1 car.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Designed to emulate a traditional shop facade, the Hamiltons repurposed what was an ex-lorry depot for their tarmac business. They commissioned wall and floor murals by a local graffiti artist to compliment the cars that would live within. Better still, they added a top floor in which would become a themed private (motor)sports bar and balcony. Jonny has been to a fair few car collections since starting The Late Brake Show, but Wullie and Morean's place felt extra special. Back to the cars. The last car to be purchased is arguably the most special - the Fiat 131 Super Mirafirori Abarth Group4. For every 500 mk2 Escort GRP4s you might see and hear a hot 131.

Hmmm. I have a wife like that. I tried really hard to bring her round showing her dismantled turbo, brake calipers, steering rack etc and how they work but she still didn't get it. I gave up and let her grow vegetables that the supermarket has better and pay for all the tools and built her the best watering system in the village...

What a collection. As much as I love Mk2 Escorts, as legendary as the GT40 is and even an F1, for me the cherry on top was that 131 Mirafiori. Only ever saw 2 (street versions) in my life . One was at a weekly back road street drag "get together", it sounded absolutely manic screaming up and down the strip. What a car

Wow. Willie's amazing museum immediately reminded of the amazing surprise of seeing Giles Villeneuve's and Kimi Raikkonen's F1 cars while on a tour of the Giacobazzi lambrusco cantina in Modena. We thought we were just going for a quick tour of the cantina before tasting the various wines, but... we were treated to an amazing walk-through a fine collection of Ferrari road & race cars, many Tour-De-France bikes, old farm and winery machinery, then a lucky chance to talk with Mr. Giacobazzi himself who told us about his family's history and relationship with Ferrari, not only as a sponsor. You've got to go there if anywhere near Modena.

Jonny is right - the roads around this part of Ayrshire are superb for driving on. Quiet enough, twisty enough. Mr Hamilton needs to take his collection out for more drives! They need a bit of dirt on them. When I seen the yellow Mk2 I was reminded of one of the Ayrshire farmers who raced one just like it in local rallies. They swapped the engine in to a Fiesta, which I had a very short go of, and couldn't believe how quick it was, how instant the throttle response was.

What a fantastic workshop, full of brilliant cars, the Imp interested me as George Bevan had a house and workshop (garage) next to my junior school on Leesons Hill in Orpington Kent back in approx 1970, about the time my interest in cars started so I would often stand chatting as he worked on the cars and would explain bits and pieces to me. Also the 131, my Dad had a new 4 door 1.6 in 1977, and I had a 1982 Supermirafiori 2ltr for a few yrs which was super reliable, smooth and fast. Great video. Alex.

Thank you for enabling us to see behind these otherwise closed doors, as a personal collection is rather different to anywhere else we might see a bunch of nice cars like a museum or showroom. Hi Jonny, this must be one of your best videos, I know Imp's really well having raced them against Bill and George.
I know this period well I raced again both George and Bill in 1980 modified saloon championship, George Bevan was a wonderful guy, really friendly (I think I remember he was death or partially death and his son's often was with him to use sign language) My engine was build by Clive Brown who I think used to work for George, they were reasonably friendly, but rivals.
1980 was my first year of racing and was entered in the new Modified balloon championship running and building the car myself with no real budget. The class entered was the up 850cc class because thats the engine that it came with! During the first race at Snetterton Bill was also racing in my class it was raining and I was a bit worried about racing Bill however I managed to win the class and beat Bill who was a fair way behind in second. Bill was not happy he was making excuses etc, anyway we got to the next race and Bill had upgraded to the 1,000cc class and because there were more cars in his class and despite me winning all of my class races Bill won the championship due to more points being available with the higher number of cars in his class. I always thought of Bill ad an Icon and I also raced him in Renault 5 Turbos a few years later.
I would love to get hold of my imp again, or a similar one to do some historic races if anyone can help locate one please get in touch.(I can provide photos of the Imp if requested)

His friend Jim Clark another farmers son was doing a rally/race at the same time otherwisechances are they would have done this together. It’s been a pleasure watching this video and I would love to be able to see these vehicles and meetWullie in person but old age and health do not allow. Hiya Johnny, another brilliant episode, what a den!. Was watching you get your charger ready, I love her she's perfect. I had the same steering wheel position problem with my first car a Viva hb (think tiny little charger). My Dad told me how to sort it, we wound the track rod in one side and out the other being careful to count the threads until we had it central. Also measured the distance between the front inside edge of tyre tread and checked it was same when finished. Took her to be re tracked and we had got it spot on. Copper lubed all the track rod threads and buried them in waxoil afterwards. Loving your videos,
Best wishes from John (Kai's dad)

I am so glad that this popped up on You Tube. I am a subscriber but I guess I missed this one somewhere along the line. I knew this collection existed as I was sitting in Pentland Land Rover Stirling waiting for an oil service to be done on my e-Pace and got chatting about cars and one of the breakdown truck drivers was eaves dropping on our conversation and when I mentioned my Mini JCW which I had 2 staged and Gyeon 5 yr coated after replacing brakes and reconditioned the alloys that was featured on Instagram he asked to view it then started talking about car collections he knew about. This collection was mentioned and another that I knew about from a friend who was a member of the Ford RS club. I found this video quite emotional as my late Dad was sold one of the very first Mk1 Escorts in Scotland by his neighbour(Hamish) also recently lost who had rallied in his youth and had opened a car workshop and Ford showroom and his daily driver was either his E Type or Lotus Cortina. I used to be taken to the Granite City Rally in the forests of Aberdeenshire by Hamish and his 2 boys which nurtured and cemented my love of fast cars and off road driving. Thanks to both of you for my trip down memory lane today.

Willie’s desire for attention to detail is remarkable. Authenticity is key here. Love the artwork too. Must have been very satisfying to get the walls customised to match every car. Love that Lotus Cortina ! Jim Clark would be smiling down with a big thumbs up. The Routemaster is also very cool. I’m obliged to say that as a Londoner. Great edition. Thank you Willie and Jonny for giving us a wonderful look at a superb collection 👏🏻

Wow,wow, wow! This is the best car collection I have seen in a long time. A credit to the owner and all the people who have worked on all the restorations and builds. And the building's artwork has been an amazing job. If certain lager companies made motorsport enthused man caves....

Another amazing collection video. The murials are wonderful. These are the definition of hero cars for me too. As I get older, the supercar stuff kinda goes over my head. The engineering is great but they become so "out of it" as to be just caricatures of themselves. This is ther real stuff for me. Brilliant stuff Jonny. Thanks for yet another wonderfull half an hour. And many Thanks to Willie for allowing us to share his passion.

Woooooowwwwwwwww! This is just stunning! I’ve worked in some impressive places in my time (hours flying in a Lancaster for example), but this is how I’d do it if ever the opportunity comes up. Willie, his wife and the guy who did the artwork, well, I take my hat off. I don’t suppose I’d ever get to wander around and drink it all in, but that’s just a place that’d be lovely to soak up the loveliness of someone’s private collection. Stunning! Well played Willie (and support team).

All those years of car shows on TV, some (one?!) with a huge budget, years of TH-cam too, and no-one makes short documentaries on car caves until Jonny finds them and films them... This is a particular gem of a garage, nice one Oor Wullie!

Wow just down the road from me in Glasgow. Love the word “Mint” being used. What a collection but that mk1 Escort 1972 is awesome. I can appreciate the latest Ferrari but you can’t beat a classic even when they have been rebuilds. Thanks for sharing your collection but you need to get a classic mini rally in there 😉👍
