Probably because with Jonny he can just fully 'geek-out' about the engineering of each car, the details that attracted him to it, reasons behind his design choices with his own creations, etc and not get blank stares in return. :) Imagine trying to explain to some non-motoring enthusiast why the original 84 hp Lotus Seven is so much better to commute to work in than the latest BMW 3 series with close to 2 tonnes of heated and cooled seats, apple carplay/android auto, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, AEB, intrusive traction control and stability control, muted exhaust, -by-wire everything, laggy emissions control throttle inputs, auto gearbox, airbags, etc, etc. If you mention weight penalties, view obstructing pillars, economy 'tech', driver failsafes, etc, they'll think you're listing positives, as all they're interested in is being able to legally text and drive with the tech to stop them crashing when distracted or not checking blindspots (created by the pillars designed to prevent them being crushed if the car is upside down). Try to tell them you can replace all that yourself to prevent reaching the stage of needing all of that safety stuff with paying attention properly, for fast road driving, applying IAM, RoSPA and/or Roadcraft (all sort of the same thing really) 'advanced' driving techniques to make the maximum safe progress (this training is what enabled the police to safely do 160 mph when conditions enable it, it's not about 'the shuffle' as is commonly misunderstood when police advanced driving is talked about), and they'll ask why add so much more to the labour of commuting.
It slowly dawned on me while watching this, and hearing Gordon mention the occasional year and his age at the time, that the man is in his mid seventies. He seems twenty years younger. Probably even more jealous of that than I am of his car collection.
The last time we moved house, the estate agents were completely confused when we said all we needed was one bedroom, but we must have garaging for a minimum of four cars. Ironically the brochure for the property we eventually bought (2 bedrooms!) didn't even mention the large nissen hut at the bottom of the garden!

You are an extremely lucky man Jonny. Well, not lucky. You’ve worked extremely hard to get where you are, and I am dead chuffed for you. Very well deserved. I thought Mr Murray meant that when he did the F1 he made rather a lot of money and could go out and buy these cars he'd driven/owned or loved. Not necessarily selling a solitary F1, as it were.
Gordon Murray is always so interesting to listen too. He has built an empire in terms of his career, but ultimately his own garage is his goal.. I have the utmost respect
It's been said that "You should never meet your hero(s), you will be disappointed." But Gordon Murray the exception, he is such a down-to-earth sort of guy.

By far one of my favourite videos to grace the earth. For those petrol heads who follow Murray’s words like biblical prose this is pure automotive nivarna.
It is Gordon's amazing laidback enthusiasm and passion for lightweight engineering from a bygone era, that really projects something special to all us fans of innovative vehicles like this. Everyone should aspire to keep that type of detailed enthusiasm, even when they are in the mid seventies, because he shows how to stay young. Absolute passionate legend right there. Thank you Jonny for a fantabulous insight into Mr Murray's car cave.
What a down to earth chap Gordon is,100% car 100% on the tools. He's not scared to drive his cars and has a passionate and different love for every car, what a star.
One of the most influential and important automotive engineers of last 2-3 generations showing respect for, and giving back to guys like Jonny and the Escort resto-team. Just brilliant to see.
In motorsport he is very influential, but I just do not think he has had a significant impact on road cars. Sure, the F1 was great, but I don't think that any of Murray's engineering has transitioned to everyday road cars. In fact, everyday road cars have followed a long-term trend to get heavier and bigger, which is exactly the opposite of what Murray espouses. I'm happy for someone to put me right on his impact on the everyday road car though.
Currently restoring a K plate Lotus Twin Cam in Pistachio green - seeing Gordon's gorgeous example is amazing, hope mine will look a fraction as great. Fantastic interview with an absolute automotive icon
I love and admire how geniuses of our automotive world casually roll off and recall facts, figures, stats and stories with such casual authority, sincerity and passion. Another fantastic episode Jonny 👍
Wow Jonny. What a feather in your cap! Hanging out with Gordon. Lots of long time Maclaren fans around here, so delighted to hear the wisdom and method of it all. Finally understand the essential lightness of the M F1. Who knew big men could fit in a Lotus 7? The Caterhams and things nowadays have been stretched a bit, will have to compare the sizes properly. Most agree the weight of recent autos is out of control. Even new Minis are tanks now. I know, safety standards, quiet, comfort, etc. In a Merc S class sure, why not. In a real sports car? Forget it. Will have to keep buying older, lighter, low cg cars. Thanks again.
Wow. You've absolutely knocked it out the park with this one. Leaving TV to start TH-cam must have been a massive gamble for you, but you're smashing it. You should be really proud. GM on the channel 😎

Absolutely joyous video. Each time I hear more from Prof Murray, the more I am convinced that he exists of a different plain to the rest of us. He is an example of true genius.
Yes indeed, the automotive industry has gon down absolutely the wrong road pushed down there by arrogant ignorant politicians. It must frustrate him so much. Light is right.
I knew what modern cars Gordon Murray drove and that they were all unique and as close to his standard as possible. I always wondered what classic cars he had, if any. Getting to see this was a lovely treat and I love the fact that it was with you, Jonny. The moment where one tall Honda Sx00 owner told the other what it took to fit in one was very special. A huge thanks to Mr Murray for allowing students to see this amazing collection. I hope in a few years time it will lead to a return of the small, light and nimble machines of yore.
What a man, so simple and so humble is Mr Gordon Murray, one of the biggest car engineers I know and how many car masterpieces he conceved and what a car collection. Thank you John Smith for these mervellous reviews.
The man who created the fastest super car for a generation and his deeply loved collection is made up of tiny, light vehicles with minuscule HP figures. Proof that the joy of driving has little to do with massive HP numbers. It is all about power to weight and the sensation of speed. Major congrats to Jonny for his graduation to the big deal. You have earned it, hermano. Always engaging and passionate content. Loved your content on Fifth gear but now this is all yours. Hats off and looking forward to years of fresh content. I can't pay you a bigger compliment then, if it's on your channel, my trigger finger never hesitates. Much respect to Mr. Murray, of course, as well. =)
I would be an epic day just to see Gordon's collection. Actually having the man there to explain all of it was incredible. Thank you Johnny for putting this together.
What a truly lovely man Gordon Murray is, so knowledgeable, so grounded and truly appreciates his cars for what they stand for in an historical standpoint. Brilliant collection.
I've watched a number of GM interviews and it never ever gets boring. As a South African myself I am obviously very proud of the man, but apart from that, I just think he is an absolute genius yet so down to earth and humble. One of the true greats of the automotive world. Well done Johnny once again for coming up with this masterpice!
What a collection. IGM has forgotten more than I could ever remember! The Brabham F1 car takes me back to my childhood and racing my Dad at Scalextric. I had the BT42 (?), competing against a Tyrrell. My car would easily fly-off the track, whereas my Dad's wouldn't. Only as an adult did I learn why... the Tyrrell had lead weights inside the chassis - my Dad has modified it to beat the 7 year old me!
Gordon Murray is an absolute automotive genius. I've grown up reading everything I could about his life and his car designs, and his passion for lightness and feel. This video was a gift. Thank you
This is what the passion for cars is really about, not once did Gordon talk about any of them being an investment. Cars becoming investments have affected the car hobby in a negative way. Buy it because you love it!!
Honestly this is a genuinely brilliant video that shows the true passion and brilliance of Gordon. I could listen to him talk about cars for hours and never get bored. Well done Johnny for a brilliant video that helps explain to non petrolheads exactly what cars mean to us.
love his Midas at 15:42, in total there were around 300 made, with the mk 2 benefitting from some minor aerodynamic improvements as seen on the Gordon Murray car. His really is a one off, there are some WIP photos on the forum somewhere that really show just how special that car is... Getting there with my own MK2 press car restoration, and I can't help but wonder how the two compare...
The Midas is such a funny little car. I've yet to see one in the flesh, only in Kit Car magazines. His one-off is obviously unique, but you're pretty lucky to have one of 300!

Find yourself a woman who looks at you like.....STOP///wait a minute..... 'find yourself a woman who will put thousands of rivets in a car you're building!' Great video Jonny, was hanging off Gordon's every word, the way he was just bring up weights and specs of these cars shows his incredible passion perfectly. Thanks for posting, a superb watch.
Great episode - there wasn't a car there that I wouldn't love to own. As a South African I regret that you didn't touch on the GSM Dart and Flamingo - I would have loved to hear Gordon's take on them.
Top 10! Comment! Gordon Murray is a living legend in the Automotive world. I hope he never stops thinking "outside" the traditional car making circle :)
If Gordon spent the rest of his life talking about all the cars he's made, owned and wanted it wouldn't be enough. I could listen to 3hrs of this, amazing episode.
I'm happy you like the Pistachio Lotus Europa TC. I was at Lotus from 1966 to 1973 and working in Marketing I was told my company car was to be a Renault engined Europa prior to the UK launch, which Chapman had given to some Aristocrat and the Sahara beige paint had crazed so I was told to get it repainted. When I asked what colour I was told to pick it myself. I had seen Pistachio on a Miura so that's what I chose. I picked the car up from the paint shop in Norwich and parked it in the out of bounds Director's Car park at Hethel. It looked a million dollars but ACBC was not impressed and I got off. However Mr Chapman was always open to positive statements so I had 3 months to prove my claim it would become the best selling colour. I kept my job!
Jonny you are walking the footsteps of my dreams spending time with Gordon Murray these 2 episodes , driving with Gordon in his mk1 (after watching the whole Retropower build back when it was done) & now this extra chat & tour of the garage, thank you Gordon & thank you Jonny.
Gordon is an encyclopedia of car knowledge, I could listen to him all day. I can totally relate to his choice of cars, everything has gone big, heavy and with loads of power, but there's little more exciting that a small, light, revvy car where you can use all it's power, all the time.
I really relate to this collection--small vehicles with brilliant packaging, low weight, clever engineering, etc. - what a great group of vehicles. Thanks for the vid!
Amazing, he’s quite a chap, loads of ideas and tenacity to make them reality, then to top it all off they were mostly incredibly successful against much bigger and more funded teams. Thank you gents, eyes opened.
It's not just the genius of Gordon its the fact that he's humble and like one of us he could go out and buy the most expensive cars but he chooses to buy the things that he loves the design of and he's interested in and has the passion which is amazing. The fact that he was so obsessed with the weight and history of the cars is just sublime where most people would just be put up the power figures everywhere to try and impress people. Even, the motorbikes are interesting. It's basically a car gallery can actually move👏
I love the fact that pretty much every car in there bar the proper race stuff, has a trickle charger on them. Proof that they get used, and that Gordon can come in at any given moment and go "I'm driving this today"
Many thanks to you, your team and Gordon for this remarkable tour Jonny, it's really quite an honour to be invited for a private showing with such an automotive legend.
What a wonderful collection and a true gentleman that I'd love the opportunity to chat with. As a lover of the Lotus 7 you made my day with the originality of the black one and to see an MV Agusta was perfect.
Great vid Jonny. Gordon Murray has long been a hero of mine, and I love his taste in cars. His single minded engineering approach is great to behold. Best of all, he mentions an intention to open the collection for viewing by schools, universities etc.
My Mrs just sold her Smart Roadster (none runner) for £600 They’re going to fetch top money soon. BU56AMX pocket rocket. The roof can be opened and closed at 80mph. Love the fact it drives in Auto, manual or paddles, then Merc sod it mode. Leave in manual floor it and round to red line when it will change itself. Cracking Garage Gordon Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
This was like a tour of my youth. I remember the Minibug being in Triple C I believe it was. I too love tiny, light cars, they are such a hoot to drive!
Great collection. Thank you and Gordon for the tour. He has a fantastic garage , looks like it was planned very well to be able to use the cars rather than just store them.
Thanks for the tour, Johnny. Would've loved you to include the Dart and Flamingo, from South Africa too. They're quite special to me, as a South African and having been manufactured, fairly close, to where I live!
I could listen to Mr Murray for days. I remember once Mr Murray eyeing my Z32 Nissan 300zx as I exited a carpark near Guildford station. I doubt the Zed was Mr Murray's type of car, but it made my day. This was perhaps 17 or 18 years ago, when the SLR prototypes would roar passed our office on their test route. Happy days!
Well, Jonny... you've pretty much surpassed yourself with this one, dude...! What an absolutely wonderful way to spend 30 minutes of my Saturday evening. Thank you 😎 I think it's testament to Gordon Murray's character and work-ethic that, over his near-60 years of working in the industry, he's always been so utterly focused on lightweight, purposeful engineering and design - just as with his own idol, Colin Chapman. It would no doubt be absolutely fascinating to see how GMA plans (if, indeed, it even does...?) to move into the EV-space...? 🤔 As an aside, though, I was as equally interested in his 50cc 'screamers' bikes around the outer walls of his car-cave...! As a (past) biker myself, I always found the most enjoyment riding a small displacement, 2-stroke bike... the thrill of high revs... the sudden rush as the engine hit its power-band... the planning and skill required to keep the engine 'on boil'... 🏍 Great memories... Thank you, Jonny - an absolutely awesome upload 👍
I absolutely love that the great Gordon Murray is as fond as I am of small and micro cars. Simple micro cars had far greater design challenges. Great man.
Gordon is a truly fascinating guy. I listened to the Podcast you had him on and the story of him coming to England and all that followed was captivating. I really wish the more mainstream car manufacturers shared Gordon's outlook on what a car should be so that the working classes can have drivers cars to aspire to that are more than just power.
Gordon always looks bored with people asking him questions when I have watched other interviews but with Johnny he looked engaged and like he was enjoying himself. That was a joy.

Jonny every video only confirms TLBS is by far the best motoring video on YT. Round of applause again.
Nice career. I'm envious.
This was such a pleasure to watch! Great chemistry between Jonny and Gordon 👏
Gordon Murray is a very nice generous man.
What a man. That £5,000 Le Mans story is amazing
Well done Johnny. You're videos are just getting better and better. Your lack of ego, but unhidden sense of awe really set you apart.
I love this. His collection are designs that stimulate his mind. Brilliant.
Gordon 'add lightness' Murray is a legend. Great collection, true gentlemen and true petolhead. 👍🏻👍🏻
I thought it was Colin Chapman who said 'add lightness' but agree that GM is of the same ilk.
@@philiptownsend4026 he did.👍🏻
Oh, Jonny, you are traveling in rare circles, great interview, Mr. Murray is ever the gentleman. Awesome! FR
what a nice gentleman Gordon is,so down-to-earth,so sincerely car enthusiast..and he loves the little italian bikes!!very good job,Jonny
Wow! I got goosebumps just listening you two talk. You lucky bloke!
This video should be a 1 of 20 series, I never tire of listening to Gordon .
I love the fact that pretty much every car in there bar the proper race stuff, has a trickle charger on them. Proof that they get used, and that Gordon can come in at any given moment and go "I'm driving this today"
This channel is awesome! Knew from the original 5th gear gelled hair days you’d be the man!
Ha, those hair days are over. I'm older, but am a better driver...
@@TheLateBrakeShow yes, and no need for hair gel! :)
It's all about the proportions. Power to weight ratios. Could just imagine the ridiculous smile on one's face, with those cars. True driving!
Many thanks to you, your team and Gordon for this remarkable tour Jonny, it's really quite an honour to be invited for a private showing with such an automotive legend.
I wonder if Gordon has met Jay Leno? I know Leno still has his F-1
What a wonderful collection and a true gentleman that I'd love the opportunity to chat with. As a lover of the Lotus 7 you made my day with the originality of the black one and to see an MV Agusta was perfect.
A real collector, not buying because he has the money to buy cars because they are the in car of the time .real passion.
WOW what an awesome collection of motoring heritage. Very unusual selection but what a garage. Love those bikes as well.
Great vid Jonny. Gordon Murray has long been a hero of mine, and I love his taste in cars. His single minded engineering approach is great to behold. Best of all, he mentions an intention to open the collection for viewing by schools, universities etc.
My Mrs just sold her Smart Roadster (none runner) for £600
They’re going to fetch top money soon.
BU56AMX pocket rocket. The roof can be opened and closed at 80mph.
Love the fact it drives in Auto, manual or paddles, then Merc sod it mode. Leave in manual floor it and round to red line when it will change itself.
Cracking Garage Gordon
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
Ahh the Midas Gold 👌 I used to build them for a couple of years. Mini engine and went like a rocket.
That P5B Coupe had the slats in the grille chromed. Normally just natural aluminium finish. As usual some lovely cars. Thank you Mr. Lloyd.
Woops, jumped to wrong video. 😆
Yup 🇿🇦GSM cars, the colours on both look superb. My dad had a Hayden recreation Dart with the Kent Xflow lovely drivers cars.
Fabulous content Jonny!...30mins absolutely flew by.
Cheers,
Chris
Thanks for the video, Gordon is always amazing! whether here or showing his T50, there is never a wasted word!
I love that you seem slightly nervous and star-struck around Gordon. And who wouldn't be? What a character of the automotive world.
Thank you 😎
I think it's testament to Gordon Murray's character and work-ethic that, over his near-60 years of working in the industry, he's always been so utterly focused on lightweight, purposeful engineering and design - just as with his own idol, Colin Chapman.
It would no doubt be absolutely fascinating to see how GMA plans (if, indeed, it even does...?) to move into the EV-space...? 🤔
As an aside, though, I was as equally interested in his 50cc 'screamers' bikes around the outer walls of his car-cave...!
As a (past) biker myself, I always found the most enjoyment riding a small displacement, 2-stroke bike... the thrill of high revs... the sudden rush as the engine hit its power-band... the planning and skill required to keep the engine 'on boil'... 🏍
Great memories...
Thank you, Jonny - an absolutely awesome upload 👍
I absolutely love that the great Gordon Murray is as fond as I am of small and micro cars. Simple micro cars had far greater design challenges. Great man.
Wow. Great to see Sir Gordon ( and why the bloody hell is he not??) so relaxed. That’s down to you Jonny.👏👏👏
Maybe because he is not an Englishman ?
Gordon is a truly fascinating guy.
I listened to the Podcast you had him on and the story of him coming to England and all that followed was captivating.
I really wish the more mainstream car manufacturers shared Gordon's outlook on what a car should be so that the working classes can have drivers cars to aspire to that are more than just power.
I could listen to Jonny & Gordon for hours, excellent the pair of you.
Johnny, Absolutely loved it. I can see me watching this one again and again. Thank you 🙏
