Why I Was Wrong About Attack on Titan | The Genius of Episode One

  • Attack on Titan(Shingeki no Kyojin) is one of the most popular anime and manga in the world. And yet somehow when Hoodie first watched it, he reviewed it poorly. All these years later and Hoodie has finally rewatched and re-reviewed Attack on Titan, deciding once and for all that he was wrong. Attack on Titan is as genius as everyone says it is. Eren Jaegar is a great character. Mikasa is a real one. Armin's pretty cool too. Now get off his back.
PS. Erwin Smith is the best character in the show, followed closely behind by Reiner and Levi.

You also have to think about the fact that he planned to end the story much faster and more brutal but when the anime got popular he decided to make the story longer with more depth to make a different ending that is less brutal but at least bittersweet. Not every author can do that without messing up. Think about it foreshadowing in season 1 is still relevant to S4! That was actually my biggest thought as well - it never has any kind of power creep. A series like this would absolutely be forgiven for starting to treat the feral Titans as lesser threats, once things like Eren's powers and the character's ability to defeat them became cemented. But even at the very end, when we're having a climactic battle with the Beast Titan and his gang, the big Titans are never presented as the next danger. It's always "There's a bunch of Titans here, _and_ there's some big ones with dangerous powers to top the whole mess off".

I've never seen another show/story with such a totally unique and fascinating premise that was executed with this degree of care and excellence. On my first watchthrough of the show I absolutely loved it. However, I recently re-watched seasons 1-4 and my mind was completly blown. Usually the more I analyze a show, the more holes and issues I find that lessen my enjoyment. For what might be a first for me, Attack on Titan is the complete opposite. Watching through the show the second time, it became very apparent to me just how much thought Isayama put into EVERYTHING and JUST HOW GOOD the writing is. It's actually incredible just how chilling some of the scenes from the second and third season are now that I truly understand the charachters.

Some people say that you shouldn't judge an anime by it's first episode.
Instead I choose to point at anime like Attack on Titan which does everything right in it's first episode. We are not judging a book by it's cover after all, but it's first chapter. There are just too many anime these days that fail to impress with it's pilot episode, isekai in particular. I just wish more studios would look at the anime that do it right. In just the first episode Attack on Titan establishes basic worldbuilding, introduces the main cast of characters, introduces the antagonist, has some foreshadowing and shows off the protagonist's motivation and goals. The first episode can't get much better than that. I don't expect every anime to do all of these things, but the viewer should at least have a basic idea of what to expect. From the first episode of Attack on Titan most viewers would expect the rest of the show to be about Eren fighting the titans, which would be correct. It's too much to ask of the viewers to stay interested if you don't give them a good enough reason to.
Sorry just had to get all of that out there. Anyway, nice video.

In season 1 you have people living behind walls, in fear of the titans and with little to no understanding of them. By the end of season 3 they have killed nearly every titan on their island, understand their nature entirely and are grappling with the history and geopolitics that brought about their situation. Its a steady, unforced and comfortable ride that takes you far and away from what the story first started out as. A less confident writer would of kept people riding around on horses, slashing titan necks for ages because that was what selled.

Honestly, I used to be right there with you. I thought Attack on Titan was little more than a blood saturated nihilistic despair factory of waste and barbarism. That it survived solely off of Walking Dead style *shock factor* and beautiful animation alone. (Not to mention the stellar soundtrack, that was never in question).
However, the later parts of the Manga and Season 4 have radically altered my view of this story. The storytelling is so deliberate and tight, almost nothing feels wasted... Which is saying a LOT these days as too many shows just feel like a waste of time. (Looking at you Game of Thrones and Walking Dead).

Two groups of people that are one in the same but view each other based on their relationship with their oppressor. It’s amazing that he could package it so well. Great content btw. Subbed.

Not really. The "thing" with Kruger seems pretty unrelated to Eren's dream in chapter 1. It is either something not yet revealed or due to Ymir sending some sort of memories to him as implied by the end of chapter 122 (which also has a paired title with chapter 1). Also of note, the dream in the manga is different from the dream in the anime due to Isayama not yet being very involved in the anime's production, so that tends to confuse some people as to what Eren probably saw.

The way AOT is structured, you really can't judge individual seasons by themselves because each subsequent season expands upon a lot of the concepts introduced in the previous seasons that it retroactively improves them. AOT season 1 is fairly okay alone, but then season 4 came all the way back and provided so much context for season 1 that season 1 became absolutely incredible for how much its set up paid off.

  • @reptarien

I kinda had a similar experience, actually. I watched the first season with my mom like 5 years ago or so in middle school, and was largely disinterested. I kinda held the same issues; seemed uninteresting, blah blah.
I saw people on twitter just a few weeks ago talking about how good the show was, that it was ending, and decided to just jump back in from the beginning and give it a second chance.
Literally just watching the first season again changed my mind. Realizing that they were alluding to Annie being a Titan shifter since her first introduction, and that Eren was far from the only shifter, made me realize there was a lot going on. And since I'm older, all of the characters' nuances were much more relatable and feeling. By the first season, which I had already watched in full, my mind was changed.
I caught up to where S4 Part 2 is now just on sunday (happened to be the same day a new episode came out, lol) and my god. This show officially fucked me up. The amount of thought into the world, it's circumstances, and the story beats all before he had to have written before he even started on the story itself; it's just mind-boggling. The amount of thought every action, thing, occurence, even menial has is inspiring. It's the kind of thing I want to do myself. And just hearing literally any intro, outro, impactful song has me sobbing in minutes, thinking about the characters, the story, Mikasa's abs... Only something you would call a Masterpiece could make you do that.
Attack on Titan is a fucking masterpiece, plain and simple. All writers, artists, and influencers should aspire to this level of creativity, planning, feeling, and accomplishment that Isayama has.

I was also thinking the same way as well. I watched the first season and was like "ahh, okay... this is interesting" but it never gotten me further than that. I thought it would be a hundreds episodes of anime with no exact direction, just humans vs titans spiced with a bit of betrayals, dramas, and twists here and there without intend to ending the anime. Then I continued to the 2nd season, just because why not. And I was hooked and started to think "holy, this show is amazing".
