    Elvenjig is the instrumental intro they created for Elvenpath which is the first song off the first album back with the original singer Tarja, so quite an old song. In this concert they revisit a lot of those.

    Tuomas used to play the clarinet and the saxophone. I think he played the clarinet in a military band during his obligatory service in the army. He plaed the sax in the Brass band Chameleon 1995, Nightwish was founded in 1996.
    Chameleon was Plamen Dimov's band, he is a Bulgarian musician who married a Finn and moved to Kitee, a town of 10 000 people, in mid 1980's. Kitee is in Eastern Finland near the Russian border and Tuomas, Emppu, Jukka and Tarja are originally from Kitee.
    Without Plamen Nightwish would not be what it is, says Tuomas. Plamen supported encouraged the promising young musicians. Plamen played the violin on the Oceanborn album (1998).
    He is still active in Kitee music scene. Musicians and vocalists from many counties gather in Kitee every summer to play and sing Nightwish songs. Plamen is involved so is Dean Kopri, a Croatian pianist, who is featured in the new permanent Nightwish exposition.
    I saw a video where they performed in front of Tuomas, and Tuomas was so taken, went red and almost speechless. "That was really, really, really..."

    Elvenjig is most probably a live "jam" created for this tour. Elvenpath starts at 3:08. Troy is one of the most recent members of Nightwish. He was first featured on the album Dark Passion Play as a guest musician. In Nightwish he plays the Uilleann Pipes, Bouzouki, Low Whistles, Tin Whistles
    Bodhran, and Electric Guitar.
    Their most recent tour, Decades, was to commemarate the bands history. They played songs from all albums, many that have not been played for decades (or ever!). With Tory in the band, and their more recent style of symphonic metal, they re-imagined their older songs, adding to the original arrangements with folk and symphonic elements. It's also the first time current lead vocalist Floor Jansen has performed many of their older songs.
    Drummer Kai Hatho is also a member of Wintersun. If you want to see him actually break his sweat, check out their Live in studio rehearsal of their song Sons Of Winter And Stars th-cam.com/video/Tl5T-glTdXw/w-d-xo.html

      little correction / addition ... if you check their acoustic live version of "How's the Heart" from the latest album Troy also plays acoustic guitar

    • @phillee2814
      @phillee2814 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galadballcrusher8182 I think Troy plays whatever he wants to - those are just the instruments he has been asked (so far) to perform on. I have met a couple of musicians in my life like that, who can pick up an unfamiliar instrument, ask a few questions on technique, and play it tolerably after an hour or so of practice, with maybe a week before performing to friends and a month to full proficiency. It is a very rare talent, and I believe Troy has it.
      Of course, he is also Nightwwish's third current lead vocalist. So that makes two currently qualified for a "Floor Jansen is my backing vocalist" shirt :-)

      @@phillee2814 no what i mean is that i think he is schooled in guitar and probably before he picked bouzouki. I studied classical guitar for years and what he does on the acoustic video isn't a 1 week or 1 month affair. And after a little search on wikipedia look at this .... its from his first band he had formed en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Donockley#/media/File:Troy_Donockley_Guitar.jpg

    "Elvanpath" is the first track on the album Angels Fall First and that was the first album the band produced in 1997. Obviously it doesn't have the polish of later songs. Floor is singing this lower than Tarja, as I think this version is in a lower key. I do know that their guitars were standard tuning back then and now they're in D tuning, which might influence this.

    • @mnewm21
      @mnewm21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they used to mix their guitar tunings a bit back in the day as Emppu had his purple guitar tuned differently to his white/cream guitar but nowadays you never see the white guitar it is only the purple one. Although maybe this was during the transition phase from Tarja to Annette? This is in a lower key than Tarja sang it.

    Decades show was a part of the band's anniversary tour and the setlist was made up of their older stuff mixed with the new. "Elvenpath" comes from that curious little phase they went through that drew a lot of inspiration from classic high fantasy books - and it was before Tuomas got really good at writing ("keeping sauna warm for him" lyric never fails to crack me up) and composing. It's a trip down the memory lane for the fans, and an interesting look into the band's journey as a whole.
    And you're right, Floor does sound a little uncomfortable in this one - she's the third Nightwish vocalist, and a lot of the songs from this tour were written for Tarja Turunen (who has a lyric soprano, as opposed to Floor's soprano).
    Great reaction, it was really curious to hear your take on it!

    • @billattercliffe8655
      @billattercliffe8655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is meaningless to apply operatic voice classifications to metal singers. I did not hear any discomfort on display here. The song was pitched in a lower key than the original. Floor has stated that Tuomas sought to challenge the low end of her range and she is pushing her voice well into male vocal ranges. We're seeing some of that on display here.

    Troy is playing Uillean pipe, the Irish version of a bag pipe.
    And you are right Floor is incredible, and never does anything not on purpose. Her voice techniques and toolbox are more than huge. She even evolves new techniques herself ( because voices are individual) - and becomes even more clear when you listen to their new album Human Nature. But please wait until you have been around Wembley, Tampere and Buenos Aires first.
    Great an honest reaction from you 👍 🤘 🤘
    I would suggest you listen to
    The Greatest Show on Earth, Tampere 2015. It is about the evolution, 4.6 billion years from big bang and to the end.
    !! Stay on until the very end because the speaking is an important part of the song - and it is Richard Dawkins speaking (the scientist)
    And then you go for
    The Poet and the Pendulum, Wembley 2015. An emotional roller coaster, describing a depression Tuomas went through after firing their first singer Tarja - an old childhood friend, but they had to break away professionally/musically due to different goals.
    And then
    Dead Boy's Poem from Buenos Aires 2018.
    And then a double session:
    How is the Heart, Human Nature - the new studio album - follow by the only live version
    How is the Heart, Planet Rock Radio, an acoustic version with Troy and Floor from a promotion tour this spring.

    Great react and comments, liked and subbed.
    Yes, please do add more musical analysis about the structures and your opinion (guess) If something has done a bit "unusually".. either artistic or arrangement or what ever reason. And of course your honest take did was it tasteful choice to do :)
    My knowledge of musical theory is less than perfect so it would be nice to hear even a bit more deeper reactions which you have done.
    Dont get it wrong, I do like your reacts even now, but I can see the potential ...
    YT is already full of "nice, awe, great, omg" type reactions without no breakdown why they praise everything. Those reacts are like "elevator music", its there on the background without anybody really noticing...
    Reaction scene needs more also a bit "music pro"/analytic approach. Now there is a overdose of vocal coach reacts, others needed too, like yours
    All the best, cheers
    And btw, already suggested Wintersun to get another (more fierce) take of that drummer Kai Hahto.. Wintersun is his previous band, also melodic metal.
    My vote for this also..

    Is't there clatinet, tuba, banjo and contrabass in old style jazz or does that not count as jazz anymore? I grew up listening to that kind of jazz, new-orleans style and i found Miles Davis which also has a lot of bass.

    • @feeperyt
      @feeperyt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When most people think of "jazz" they're thinking of bebop which is typically drums, bass, piano and one or two horns. Clarinet, tuba, banjo and such were a thing in the "hot jazz" style you're talking about but once bebop became the predominant style that jazz was moving towards (and to a lesser extent big band swing) those instruments stopped appearing

    They really dressed up this very early song for the greatest hits set they toured on, so perhaps the reason for constraint that you noted is from wishing to keep at least some of the original. The tenseness in the singing probably comes from awkwardness of singing very silly lyrics for a very old song - only the keyboard player (songwriter) and the guitarist are left from the original lineup, so the rest of them can't even be sentimental about it. While the music/arrangements can be improved/dressed up, the lyrics are what they are. It's like going back and reciting a poem that somebody else wrote as a kid ))))

    Elvenjig was a short jam they worked up to open this song. It is not a song on any CD. This was a very early song from Tuomas and he was still learning his craft. Normally to start a verse Tuomas would have the guitar either drop out or chug with a palm mute to make room for the vocals. You should check out a prog band called "Ayreon". See link. It has 11 different vocalists and many alternative instruments. It is the work of Arjen Anthony Lucassen from The Netherlands.
