Wow Eric - What a perfect explanation about how emotions can be triggered by musicians using their instruments in a perfect way at the perfect time. This song always gives me tears.
Marko's bass, Emppu's brief growling guitar and his solo. Floor's voice, vibrato, perfect pitch. Kai's cadence. Marko, using bass harmonics. And Tuomas, for giving us this musical look at an eclipse.

Eric, this song is very close to Floor herself. After her galbladder surgery, the years of corona and one postponed concert after the other and then her cancer surgery; at last she is on stage again and then, when singing this song in Antwerp Belgium, at the final moment she broke, the whole s""t of the past was just to much. Al over the Nightwish lovers worldwide, there was layer of sorrow as was to be reed in the comments. "When Floor cries, we cry" was heard. Nice reaction and wishing you a Merry Christmas en a prosperous 2024. Some one from The Netherlands.
Not only Floor cried then, when you look closely at the vid you see that even Empu had to dry his tears with his jacket. You see Tuomas throwing his hand behind his head knowing how deep that went. Poor Troy trying to not loose it too and finish the song alone. From Minute one on you hear the emotions in Floor ripping her almost apart. I was surprised she was able to sing that long and hold it together because I was not 🙂
One of the very best summaries of Nightwish experience! Nightwish journey is one with no compare, before, now or future! After endless Floorgasms, they make big burly hairy old men cry! They are perfect, always!
You should check out the fan shot video of this song from 20 november 2022 in Antwerpen. It was Floor's first performance after her breastcancer surgery and she broke down at the end, the reaction of the band and crowd is heartwarming.
@@bujin1977 Of course...but I don`t want to be reminded......stubborn?....yes.....but i have no problem being called that. I can live better calling HER the GODDESS.
Of all the reactors that I have watched, you get Nightwish the best, Eric. Thank you for that very heartfelt reaction. I had a thought while I was watching you talk about Emppu. People react to the other bands of Floor, Marko, Kai, Tuomas, but I have never seen a reaction to Emppu's other band, Brother Firetribe. I'd love to hear you react to "Indelible Heroes".
Nobody in this band is in it for their own ego. Floor really has a way to reach into emotions with her voice. Saw her live Friday night and all songs hit on a different level live. I cried at several points, but also there was energy times a thousand due to the exchange of love from audience to stage and back. I dare say it was her best solo show to date.
This song has been my fav for 20 years now. All new stuff is awesome, but once this one comes up, it hits hard. It's so sad, beautiful and haunting. It brings tears to my eyes too
My favourite version. Thanks Eric. Spot on as always... On the subject of Emppu (and referencing this sing) here is Floor: "My guitar hero - I play in a band with him: that’s Emppu. He is an amazing guitar player, but he doesn’t need to fill every gap in the song with meaningless notes. He really keeps the atmosphere [of the songs]. What he plays in Sleeping Sun is beautiful."
You spoke about the feeling of safety that pulls or "lures" you in to emotions. The thing with Nightwish and Tuomas's compositions is that there is always a safety net. Even the deepest, darkest, saddest songs have this empowering feeling, that you know its not going to leave you as pissed-off wreck at the end. They take you to a journey - usually in a way or the other in to yourself, and then they bring you safely back home. And I think Floor is the perfect guide to this journey and for this reason so liked. Tarja and Anette are great singers and performers, but there was always this darker and angrier tone with them. With Floor one always feels like the anger or sadness is a motherly advice - you know its true and it might hurt your feelings for a while but you are safe and it is for your best interest.
Thank you, Eric!!!❤ The amount of time Nightwish has gotten me to cry, I lost the count ages ago😅 They just deliver so much and so many emotions! A beautiful song, what more can I say.
I was at my first Nightwish concert this summer. I hoped they would play this song - and they did! I can’t express how it felt. I turned my head from Floor and looked at the sun which was setting behind the stadium. The sun sets late summertime in northern Finland. A truly magical experience. It was their last concert for a time. I hope to see them again.
What an amazing reaction Eric! I was teared up too, it just happens and there is no stopping it. Nightwish have a way of reaching the deepest part of the soul.
So hard to watch this... My soul has crushed to millions pieces. I will never be the same again. Still, I will keep listening and watch this when I can. Couple beers and I can. Sober, not. I am afraid. Song for Tinka, it is now song for PikkuRuu too. This pain kills me.
@@reeilona Your precious cats will always be remembered in the sounds of Nightwish. I´m so sorry for the deep pain you have now Ree. They light up the night sky above.
I agree about emppus playing he is the only guitar player who has ever made me cry, it wouldn't be nightwish without emppu, they're all great, God bless
So many reactors on TH-cam intellectualize the music, tell you nothing you didn't already know. Meaning, how (in this case) Nightwish are all super talented musicians yada yada. It looks like to you, the music is an open book from which you can read word for word what has gone into making the music. Last but not least the pain. I was diagnosed with autism, very alexithymic, meaning my own emotions are mostly hidden away from me. That doesn't mean they're not there, but they are like, sometimes I call it a highway behind a noise abatement wall. I can tell there's something going on behind, but it's all muffled and distorted beyond recognition. Your reactions really explain to me what keeps drawing me to this band, sometimes your analyses make me cry just as much as the music itself. Only, now I know a bit better, how and why and what for. Much thank you for that.
I love how you manage to put your thoughts into words, there's a real art to that. This is Tarja's song for me, but that doesn't mean I don't love this performance too! Great stuff (and one of the very few pieces I've tried to learn on piano, still trying!)
Eric, I've said for years that Floor's voice touches your soul. It pulls the tear chain. Tuomas lyrics are so timeless and bring on a similar feelings. Great reaction and explanation of your emotions.
I could only imagine but could never want to experience the pain you must of felt holding your wife for the last time that last night that you never want to end. When i look at my wife it reminds me how blessed i am but i also think of how many good people out there that have suffered. But you give us great joy with great knowledge and feelings. I appreciate everything you do for us. Our hopes and for some of us our prayers that things keep improving in your life. You may not always feel or believe this but your a good man.
Good Morning Eric, it' s around five in the morning here in Germany and you wake me up with the song, that made me love them ever since I've heard this song almost a quarter of a century ago for the first time - in a friends black Golf car with a good sound system... my children know that this is the song they would play at my funeral one day ... and after the crying comes " I want my tears back " - so they can celebrate life again. 🎉❤ Take care. And have a wonderful special time of the year! 🏕🔥 Much love from Germany 💜 💫
"Sleeping Sun" by Nightwish is a melancholic song about the passage of time and the longing to go back to different moments in life. The desire to remain in a single moment in time-a night time that could last a lifetime-to be with someone you love and feel connected to. The imagery of the song reflects the nostalgia you feel for these past moments, from wistful oceans to a two hundred twenty-two days of light. Ultimately, wishing to go down with the sun-to sleep and weep with the one you love. 🌅
Great react Eric. It's great to hear a reactor describe THEIR take on a song beyond technical analysis. At the end of the day that's why we listen, not the technical aspect. Tuomas' really can't be properly described as a "songwriter". He's a COMPOSER. That comes with a much broader understanding of why music touches people and how to accomplish that. The entire band understands that and they follow a "what the song needs" path, not "what makes me look cool". I understand that the label asked him to write a song commemorating a solar eclipse across Europe and he didn't really care about doing it. This was what he ended up writing. Unbelievable result for a song he really wasn't interested in writing
Was really looking forward to you getting round to this one - precision musicianship from a band whose chief craft in trade is emotion. I knew Emppu would get ya after your previous comments about him! His choice of tone in this one is just divine. Your unpacking of all this is great company once again, many thanks.
I don`t know what brought more tears to my eyes, Floor`s vocals or your eloquent reaction. This band by far is the best, every member is the best at what they do.
This song, the lyrics and the exquisite music, combined with its timing utterly rips away any strength you thought you had of fighting the inevitable emotions that are coming as your own personal memory comes into focus. Beautiful and brutal all at once.
Eric, your reaction to this was so heartfelt and beautiful. Nightwish are masters of their craft as are you. The melancholic longing in this song is intense.
Hi Eric as soon as I saw the song title I thought this will be an emotional one for you. Floor and Tuomas push you to the precipice but it’s Emmpu pushes me over every time
I once recommended this song to you from End of an Era with Tarja. I though you would like it, but I didn’t imagine how deeply it would touch you. Hope you enjoyed it.
The best way i can put it is that Emmpu is totally dedicated to the song, not to himself or to show his talen, but to give the song what is needed. In high hopes or romanticide you can see what Emmpu could do in every song, But he does just what fits the song perfectly. Will always be unappreciated for those who don't see this.
Hallo Eric , i concur with every word you said. To hear your broken heart crying hurts. But, still i hope to find a love, deep like yours. Greetings from Germany and Parkinson's sucks and EMPPU RULES!!! 😀🤗 alex
I consider myself a big tough guy, with a heart of gold! I cry every single time that I listen to "Sleeping Sun".... and you are right, Tuomas Holopainen knows exactly what he is doing, because he wants us to feel what he was feeling while writing and composing this song....and every other song! I am the same way with my paintings. I want my viewers to see the beauty that I see all around me.
Another fantastic reaction! One of the songs where I love both Floor's and Tarja's performances. Different but equally beautiful and powerful. I especially love the 2005 music video with Tarja in a white dress striding across a medieval battlefield like a Valkyrie.
This song helped me to remain whole after my sisters death, listening over and over while walking her dogs and mine in her so beloved dunes. It is forever connected to Daphne.. You have the ability to put all those feelings I feel and will have forever with this song into words.. thnx
Oooh....ERIC, it wasn`t meant to get you in that way....... Didn`t expect that...... Yes its emotional....... Hope you forgive me..... Downloaded the vid...... Thank you ERIC for doing this............nuff said......
Awww, the ceramic Christmas tree! My Mom made one of those when I was little. I think she's still got it somewhere. I remember playing with the 'lights' when I was little and changing where the colours went. Also the song is stunningly, hauntingly gorgeous and I love it.
I'm pretty sure these trees came with a copy of Frampton Comes Alive and that ribbon candy that eventually melds into one giant piece of ribbon candy no one wants! Cheers, Eric
Such an intimate and beautiful song. Commemorating the European solar eclipse of 1999. Floor requested Tuomas to add this song to the setlist. Sorry to hear how you relive those difficult memories. I agree Eric. Emppu is so great at doing what is needed without stroking his musical ego. Very much like David. It is not about watch what I can do. It is all about listen to how my guitar sings.
The emotion Floor creates at times when she songs just hits me like a hammer. I cry everytime I listen to this rendition. It is just a stunningly beautiful song on its own, but Emppus gorgeous solo makes me love electric guitar more every time, and with Floor singing, it soothes and touches my soul 😊
Hi Eric, over the past few months i have watched and listened to your reactions. I never wrote anything though to express my appreciation for what you are doing here on this channel. But today, I thought what the heck, after Floor and her brothers in arms, took me to that exact same spot where you found yourself. I have listened to this song so many times and yet again....😢...I found myself tumbling down those stairs. I admire your creativity with your analogies. You're as creative with words as Tuomás is with music. Have a great Holiday season. Thanks!!! ❤❤
Hello Eric. In my opinion this Song has two layers. First, about the solar ecligse, but it is about Life. We all have our Darkness 🤘🤗Great reaction again. (Tuomas, and his Lyrics, many meanings. )
There is a Version from the human nature tour, where floor had to cry herself at the end. I saw them some days later in munich. They replaced sleeping sun by sahara…
Every bloody time! Eric, your reactions are always top notch and this was no different. Your analysis of this song was absolutely brilliant! Keep up the good work.
I feel you Eric, this is what Floor does to me too. Friday december 8th I saw Floor in Amsterdam Afas. Her first concert after giving birth to Lucy. She glowed, the wolfside of Floor was out again and WOW what a concert.
Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999, the same day with the solar eclipse which occurred in part of Europe and Asia that year. Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have: 222 days of light will be desired by the night. coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years. Floor's execution of this song was sublime, although this song was written for Tarja's vocals... And I absolutely love Emppu's guitar play here, tasteful, yet powerful. A true Finnish Army Knife of guitars !!! NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.
This song made me Nightwish fan back in 1999. This version is like warm comfy August night as where original is like crisp as a chilling August night. Interesting how different image you got from "I wish for this night-time To last for a lifetime" To my mind comes how someone loves winter and polar night so much that wants it last lifetime. But I'm from Finland and those winter nights when it's -30 sky is clear and stars shine over darkness and make snow sparkle... Those are magical nights.
I absolutely love this song it's a beautiful song it seems to put me on another universe and I agree with you about empuu comparison with David Gilmore this song dosent give me goosebumps It sends shivers down my spine great reaction as usual.
Marko is multi instrumental which gives him that ability. Guitar, Bass guitar, voice and I would not doubt perhaps keyboards. Most musicians that are multi instrumental tend to be empathic and well versed on music be it writing, composing and taking a piece to another level.
It was always one of the reasons their music is compelling is that the whole is sooo much greater than the sum of it's parts! So often in live shows the solos get extended and the guitarists go off and make the song all about them. Emppu doesn't as he knows the song is perfect already it doesn't need ridiculous embellishment it just needs to be played with the correct tone and spacing so everyone falls deeper into the place the song has taken them. Even when they were young you could tell Emppu understood his ego, look at his guitar solo in the live Walking in the Air it us perfection and drives you deeper into the song, who knew an electric guitar solo could make sense in that song!
This is another song that could have been written by Björn & Benny from Abba. And that is a compliment. Because B&B are among the greats on this planet when it comes to pop music. Tuomas is a real genius. Thanks for this!
If you like Nightwish do check out the group Renaissance's BBC videos. They were Nightwish of the 70's. Annie Haslam the vocalist also had operatic training and a huge range. They were a mix of rock, classical and jazz. Their equal of Nightwish's Wacken concert was their Live at Carnegie with the New York Symphonic. Sadly there was no video.

Another fantastic reaction! One of the songs where I love both Floor's and Tarja's performances. Different but equally beautiful and powerful. I especially love the 2005 music video with Tarja in a white dress striding across a medieval battlefield like a Valkyrie.
I concur!❤
This song is performed in a way that puts your emotions in a blender then hits the liquidise button
I concur

It's always nice to listen to you Eric. And educational.👍
Thnx Eric, i conqur with everithing, you are the man, how honnest can someone be, thnxxx
The Sublime and Serendipity ,lyrics,Floor's vocals, every part & player fits the emotions,Emppu is devoid of Ego
Cheers,
Eric
Thanks!!! ❤❤
Good one.
Hello Eric. In my opinion this Song has two layers. First, about the solar ecligse, but it is about Life. We all have our Darkness 🤘🤗Great reaction again. (Tuomas, and his Lyrics, many meanings. )
Eric, I really like your style. Strong, emotional and wise reaction - again!
Excellent reaction!
Goddes Mamma Floor 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Thank you for this❤️
Just came home from Tarja's concert.
I'm all emotional today🤗❤️
This might be one of THE MOST Legendary Nightwish songs, first heard this 1999 ,It was a MASSIVE hit in Nightwishes home country Finland.
Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have:
222 days of light will be desired by the night.
coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive.
Interesting how different image you got from "I wish for this night-time
To last for a lifetime" To my mind comes how someone loves winter and polar night so much that wants it last lifetime. But I'm from Finland and those winter nights when it's -30 sky is clear and stars shine over darkness and make snow sparkle... Those are magical nights.
Cool reaction 🎶🎵🤘
Hi Eric! Thanks for a great and powerfull and interesting reaction as always!
I totally agree about EmPuu, he doesn’t get nearly enough credit! Great reaction from a new subscriber!
I absolutely love this song it's a beautiful song it seems to put me on another universe and I agree with you about empuu comparison with David Gilmore this song dosent give me goosebumps
It sends shivers down my spine great reaction as usual.
Marko is multi instrumental which gives him that ability. Guitar, Bass guitar, voice and I would not doubt perhaps keyboards. Most musicians that are multi instrumental tend to be empathic and well versed on music be it writing, composing and taking a piece to another level.
So briljant i love empu
No matter how angry or frustrated I am, this band manages to reset my calm.
This is another song that could have been written by Björn & Benny from Abba. And that is a compliment. Because B&B are among the greats on this planet when it comes to pop music. Tuomas is a real genius. Thanks for this!
Great reaction again as always
Thx
Greetings from Sweden
If you like Nightwish do check out the group Renaissance's BBC videos. They were Nightwish of the 70's. Annie Haslam the vocalist also had operatic training and a huge range. They were a mix of rock, classical and jazz. Their equal of Nightwish's Wacken concert was their Live at Carnegie with the New York Symphonic. Sadly there was no video.
