  • Another requested song in the books! Really enjoyed this one. Lots more "symphonic" influence at least how I see it!

i agree to all 3 suggestions they are all awesome songs. Btw the instrument played here by Troy is an Irish Bouzouki( which is derived from Greek Bouzouki but is last 60 years or so adopted by Irish folk musicians though they tune it diferently and because they are more used to play standing instead of siting lutiers making that variant changed the soundbox to be flat back instead of pear shape)

Thanks, great reaction! There is a 15 part video of ˋmaking of endless forms most beautifulˋ where Tuomas explains some of the process of composing the songs. My take is that the songs are always stories that he feels need to be told and eventually, through a process which I do not understand, take musical form.

NW have a pretty prominent folk streak running through their work. Initially it was Finnish, but later more Celtic. I Want My Tears Back is a great example, but there are plenty of others. As for how well metal and symphony mix together, why are you surprised? If Beethoven were around today, he'd be a metalhead, the 9th symphony just begs for some distorted guitars to go with all those strings in the 2nd movement. That said, one guy, Yngwie Malmsteen, is generally credited for creating, practically by himself, the neoclassical style of metal guitar in the mid-80s that still serves as a template for much of the symphonic metal that followed. For instance, here is a couple of signature examples - Trilogy Op 5 (th-cam.com/video/Mp_qugCaaec/w-d-xo.html) with an orchestra and Black Star (th-cam.com/video/UMq1Ll1_oKY/w-d-xo.html).

The end of the acoustic part is like peak Marko - how he casually drops the double neck and switches seamlessly from acoustic guitar to electric bass while singing lead vocals.

Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) writes all the Songs (Lyrics) - Stories - then composes music for them into a demo of how he wants them to sound. Band members then joins in to add a spin on the songs :) so every song you will hear from Nightwish is actualy a story from him that has a meaning to it :) so make sure when you watch "Poet and the Pendulum" to do a reaserch cuz it has a tragic story behind it and there you can see how Metal Mozart puts his heart and soul into the music :) As far as reactions goes would be fun to see you react to Nightwish - High hopes (Live end of an era) it's a Pink Floyd cover. Stay safe man!

Nightwish actually started out as more of a power metal band and have transitioned into symphonic metal over the years. They don't use symphonic instrumentation on every song.

This song is about the 3 main religions and how they try to influence mankind to tell them that different gods make the rules and priests are the ones making sure they listen and its also the story they tell and make people feel bad if they are doing something against the rules and create fear

Funny you should mention "symphonic" (classical) and metal. There are studies that show the brain reacts the same way to both. If you look and the structures of many of the riffs and particularly solos, you will see a pretty classical progression. Rob scallon even demonstrated how well they fit by playing some pretty heavy stuff on a cathedral organ using midi th-cam.com/video/PK6FFF2sOBM/w-d-xo.html
Marko and Floor have a crazy good blend in their voices.
Check "My Walden" from the same concert for even more folky.

@@feeperyt Well Mr. Feeper, you might be better off not delving into these lyrics publicly. . . . . . . . . . . . .I can say, however, I completely agree with the band. Weird guitar? Troy is playing an Irish Bouzouki, 8 strings, like a Greek one but flat back.
I have often posted this, you might find it an informative 2m 41s of excellent presentation from Tuomas and Troy:

I believe each band member was given a solo at some time during the concert. Tuomas' was the opening for TGSOE with synchronous fireworks. Marco, of course, sang The Islander.
Floor's might well have been Sleeping Sun, and Troy had the opening to My Walden.
