I think this may be Floor's greatest performance with Nightwish. Ghost Love Score is virtuosic, but she conveys such subtilty and emotion here, it's incredible. I don't see how she didn't start crying, she seems to be feeling every word!

I remember hearing floor talk about her being a strong empath. She then was asked how she deals with strongly emotional work, and she replied that she basically has to go through it a bunch of times (implying crying I believe) and get the overwhelming first emotions out of the way before she can really perform it.

@@SuperDi_ She is more that an empath, she suffers from Hyper-sensitivity. A condition where emotions of others start controlling yours like an echo chamber. It can be quite debilitating and wonderful at the same time. You can be sure that she was crying through this, I know that I do...

Same here about the band however Freddie Mercury and Queen have been the only other band apart from odd tracks, Christmas Truce and Night Witches from Sabaton and Anoana by Heilung, that had me get really emotional. Another one was Freddie and FLoor Who wants to live forever.

Even when Tuomas was in a deep depression when he wrote this song he was so precise that after the words 3 minutes and counting it is exactely 3 minutes that you see him slash his throat with his hand and commit suïcide in the song. This is a rollercoaster of emotions song, beautiful sang by Floor and Marko

Watching this performance for the first time was a pivotal moment in my life. It was the second song I had heard of Nightwish and the lyrics hit me so hard and I processed so much pain in the months following. I will always be so thankful to Tuomas to open up and share his deep feelings because it ultimately released me from the prison of my own making.. It´s such a sacred song. "Nightwish cures broken souls like nothing else can ..." This. This is what sets THIS composer, THIS band, THIS vocalist apart from everyone else. It isn't just music. It's something else entirely. Tuomas' compositions have no equal. Then Floor just takes them and wrecks your soul, and in so doing allows you to heal. It's like breaking a badly set bone to allow it to set properly and heal.

This songs backstory is deep and dark, especially for Tuomas (suicide by song). And yet, Floor took this song to a new astral level (originally sung by Anette). Also, I recommend reading "The Pit and The Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe for extra flavor.
The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired. In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous, and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die.
Even the prime minister of Finland got in on the act. It was headline news.
These are the things that brought him into depression, and these are the things that echo through the lyrics...
This song has the most emotional impact, at least for me... I was that that "Bastard" who abandoned Nightwish after Tarja left...Never Again !!!!
Although I love this song (Especially this version), it is the only song, I can't put to my playlist... because, I break down to tears every single time (Current reaction included...).
This masterpiece will remain a reminder to me for my narrow mindlessness.
    HAIL NIGHTWISH 🤘😎🤘.

I can barely listen to ANY song Floor is singing without crying...
Her voice just pierce through my entire existence.
There is something about it that just shakes me to my core.
Half the time I dont even know Im crying, I just realize after im through that a tear is running down my face.
I guess you could call it "perfect beauty".
    Its tears of joy.
This song is really mixed tho cuz as I get the exact same feeling listening to Floor the lyrics cuts deep.
Especially since Ive been listening to Nightwish since -96 and I was one of those absolutely horrifyed and crushed fans that was there when the whole Tarja/Tuomas conflict busted open.
I saw all the news stories and interviews, read all the articles in real time, it was a MASSIVE things and I remember who absolutely broken Tuomas was.
Im so glad he pushed through, for his own sake most of all but also that he didnt disband Nightwish.
Big shoutout to Tony Kakko... without him, we wouldnt have Nightwish today.

The first time I heard this song was back when my brother bought the album the day it was released. At first, he wanted to listen to it by himself in his room but he came downstairs almost immediately - looking a little pale -, sat me and my mom down, gave us the lyrics booklet and just said 'Listen to this.' He played the song and me and my mom listened to it, reading the lyrics as it went. By the time it was over we looked up from the lyrics, all misty-eyed, and my mom said 'Did that poor boy (Tuomas) compose this as a requiem for himself?'

This is probably the most harrowing and frightening piece of musical art - truly incredible and I can't say I like it because it is so disquieting.
Anyone who has had any kind of mental crisis may well identify with the narrative switches of mood, if not the specific details. There is so much pain, self loathing, despair, frustration, the cold logic of inviting death (the "Pacific" sequence seems so calming and peaceful until you tune into the lyrics and the fixation of death).
I detect at least two specific crisis points - first after Floor's first "whore for the cold world" line, leading into the headbanging, and then again as the music escalates to Marko's verse. I cannot make it though that bit without breaking. I've been there in that head space a number of times and it is horrible, truly horrible.
Without Floor's "Mother" verse bringing the story safely back to shore - as Tuomas' parents helped him to safety - I'd find this song too alarming and unsafe. Sure, art can be uncomfortable sometimes but leaving with a dangerous mental space that us unresolved would just be too much.
I am glad the band has recovered, and we did not lose a remarkable talent. I doubt this song will ever be performed live again - I don't know if that is a shame or not.
I truly hope that everyone here who knows or has been in this terrible dark place has someone there for them who can answer the cry of "Save Me"
I know from experience, there is truly nothing worse than being alone.

I also agree that it is wonderful that Tuomas is still here and continues creating music and performing. Note that Tuomas is nit that person who wrote that song any longer but I think writing that song helped Tuomas process the reaction to firing Tarja and the storm of comments from fans and others in the press. Notice it The End at the start of then at the end of the song it’s The Beginning… Nightwish reborn like a phoenix.

Yeah, the whispers and Floor’s singing in The Pacific and Mother&Father do it for me everytime.

    Hello Jynger.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favorites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

This song is forever emotional, especially if you've gone through your own emotional or traumatic experiences in life, the song will always be something you can relate to. The more you learn about the band and Tuomas, I think the song becomes even more powerful.
Floor turns it into a beautiful sadness.
At the end of the day, we were utterly lucky enough to end up with Floor as the lead singer a few years later but the band was obviously not to know that.

Being an empath myself, I have a daughter who is an empath and hyper-sensitive; she is actually crippled by these conditions combined! It is amazing how Floor can manage to deliver these performances so persistently. Part of her "secret" is her condition, but to manage to not get carried away by the emotions she conveys while performing (except that one time in Antwerp on 20/11(22, which is however on another level), is truly mind-blowing to me!

Thank you for reacting to this and for this old Metal Rock head biker dude and to quote you on your Nightwish reactions you did this perfect! Thank god that Tuomas “suicide “ was musically. A few little tidbits about the Poet and the Pendulum in Tuomas own words, During the performances of this song Tuomas instructed the sound engineer to turn off his earpieces so he could not hear the singing of the lyrics as it was too emotional for Tuomas, and yes those are tears running down Tuomas face. Tuomas has said if Floor ever decides to leave Nightwish that will be the end of Nightwish as it’s to emotional to replace singers. He just can’t go through it again. Some interesting info, Notice how Emppu & Marko kept checking on Tuomas during the performance to make sure Tuomas was okay. The waves moving up and down not only to the tempo of the music but also to the emotional ups and down. A Easter egg as you young people call it I guess is, it’s exactly 3 minutes from when you hear, I only have 3 minutes and counting to when the pendulum falls and Tuomas makes the gesture of his head being severed and the screen goes blank. That’s the genius of Tuomas. Well again thank you for your wonderful reaction and research and work leading up to this reaction. Think it’s a good idea to wait a few days before doing The Greatest Show on Earth. I hope you do the Tempere version as to me it better shows the emotional bond between the bands fans, members for the spectacle that is Nightwish. Buts it’s your journey whatever you decide I’m just enjoying reliving my own journey of discovery of Nightwish thru your reaction! I thank you again! God Bless Be Safe Rock On!🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

@@JyngerSlapz Deceember 11th Nashville Jinjer. Nightwish just sad that it happened that way. Seen many come and go. Just well I can not describe much like old biker. It hurts when they pass at the same time you can end up so numb and start feeling that way with a friend or whatnot when you should be paying attention. There are ways to rewind but at what cost? ✌🤘🤘🤘💚🌑🍁

I'm man and I don't cry (yes we do)....and yes.. I did...this is the most emotionel song of Nightwish and other bands alike.... Floor is doing Toumas such a great honuor to sing with this emotion. I'm bursting to tears every time I hear this song.

The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting and lyrics never ceases to amaze me. If you run a timer from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ it is at 3 minutes when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘

Even if this was a purely fictional story and not a representation of Tuomas' mindset when he wrote it, Floor's vocals at the end would send chills down your spine. She is a once in a generation talent. And Tuomas is a master composer.

This song is obviously a very personal song for Tuomas but Floor makes it her own because she seems to really emote every nuance of the meaning with her extraordinary empathy. its interesting that this song was written 2 albums away from Floor joining the band, and it wasn't performed until she had been in the band a few years. Great reaction: we all feel it.

It was written in the interval between Tarja and Anette, and there is a version on youtube of a demo with Marco doing all of the vocals. Worth hearing Marco's version and Anette's version, but Floor definitely manages to convey the emotions in this song.

When a man put his/her soul into art, it become immortal. Tuomas has succeeded in this piece of art quite well. And about your reaction, i knew you couldnt smile like in the other reaction videos. And i listen this a lot, but i do it when i am alone, and it gives me emotions and many times little tears... So now we wait for a big finale... I know, encore is still coming and i like it. Greetings from Dubrovnik now.

1000+ times listening to this masterpiece and I still shed tears every time. Knowing the context and adding interpretation of the lyrics bites deep. On top of this knowing that the last part Floor sings is the words of Tuomas mother breaks me. I could never imagine saying those things to my son whilst he is in such despair. Love your honesty and wish you continued enjoyment and success. SPOILER ALERT The Greatest Show On Earth really is......🐺❤️

I keep listening to this song..... just randomly, and part 3: "The Pacific" always gets me no matter what mood I'm in.
And of course, there's that last part..."Mother and Father" where Tuomas' heart stops beating and the next thing you hear is his mother telling him, " Be still my son, you're home."
If that's not a recipe for an emotional breakdown, I don't know what is.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.

Hi JyngerSlapz. I've been a subscriber since your first Nightwish reaction. What a journey it has been, huh? I have to say you held it together better than I do I times and I've heard that song and seen that performance a hundred times. It has been fun to watch you discover and explore the bands music. The good news is there is still more to go. Obviously this song evokes different emotions. I can promise you that the next "big" one will not be so emotional on a personal level. It can be emotional on human level. I'm hoping you react to the Tampere version. I think it's just a little more spectacular. Floor's parents were in the crowd for the performance in Tampere. Which ever reaction to it you choose you can't go wrong, just watch the other version later. Keep up the good work and I hope your channel continues to grow.
PS - Love the new opening graphic also

Tuomas is a composer, or THE COMPOSER.
He has a masterful ability to translate his emotions into music and this song is a great example of that.
Nightwish always presents a story, with every song. But each member of the band also contributes to the telling of that story. As you can see, none of them smiled even here, but their whole being told the same story as the lyrics. That's part of why they're such a great live band. The visual element is very important in their stage performance! It really adds a lot to the storytelling.
Every song is like a short film. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes angry. But always emotional!

Nope, the best I can manage is only crying once - usually it's twice (the same places you did). Part of the genius of Tuomas is that he turns his pain into great music, but he also does the same with his joy. Anyway, thanks for that, and I look forward to Greatest Show!

I'm always thankful when I see people treating this song with the respect it deserves, when I see people not just listening to the song but trying their best grasp what it means to Tuomas, to the band, to the fans... So thank you for making that effort, having done your research, read the letters and putting yyourself in the proper emotional state to listen to it. That's the mark of a true Nightwish fan.
From now on, when you speak about the Nightwish Army, don't "you" or "they", say "we".
Don't worry, you probably won't need tissus for "The Greatest Show On Earth", they won't be tears. Or maybe tears of joy...
